Literacy As Geographies Of Transnationalism And Mobility: Diasporic Experiences, Identities, And Knowledge Production, Cinthya M. Saavedra Feb 2020

Literacy As Geographies Of Transnationalism And Mobility: Diasporic Experiences, Identities, And Knowledge Production, Cinthya M. Saavedra

Mexican American Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an increasingly mobile world, be it virtual or material, we have an incredible opportunity to conceptualize this mobility as a generator of knowledge production, giving us new ways to understand embodied literacies (Johnson & Vasudevan, 2012; Schmidt & Beucher, 2018) and ultimately reimagine our world. At some point in our lives, most of us have had to move or relocate, facing new ideas, people, and places/lands. These movimientos and migrations inevitably turn our worldview upside down, blurring our realities, a phenomenon Gloria Anzaldúa (2002, 2015) calls arrebatos (earth-shattering ruptures). Arrebatos are moments in our lives when we are catapulted …

Regulating Positive Emotions: Implications For Promoting Well-Being In Individuals With Depression, Rebecca L. Silton Feb 2020

Regulating Positive Emotions: Implications For Promoting Well-Being In Individuals With Depression, Rebecca L. Silton

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Experiencing positive emotions is paramount to derive vitality from daily lived experiences. Positive emotions are associated with a range of beneficial outcomes, including longevity, reduced incidents of stroke, improved sleep quality, larger social networks, increased prosocial behavior, lower cortisol levels, and increased endogenous opioids and oxytocin. Despite these benefits, only limited research has focused on understanding positive emotion regulation within the context of depression. Rather, mechanisms related to the regulation of negative emotion have been the focus of research and evidence-based treatments. This interdisciplinary review article aims to advance knowledge regarding the role of positive emotion regulation in individuals with …

Rewarding Effects Of M4 But Not M3 Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor Antgonism In The Rostromedial Tegmental Nucleus, Nicole Buie, Dharm Sodha, Sarah B. Scheinman, Stephan Steidel Feb 2020

Rewarding Effects Of M4 But Not M3 Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor Antgonism In The Rostromedial Tegmental Nucleus, Nicole Buie, Dharm Sodha, Sarah B. Scheinman, Stephan Steidel

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) receives inputs from the laterodorsal tegmental and pedunculopontine tegmental nuclei, the two principle brainstem cholinergic nuclei. We tested the effects of RMTg M3 and M4 muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonism in a conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm in mice. RMTg infusions of the M3 muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonist 1,1-Dimethyl-4-diphenylacetoxypiperidinium iodide (4-DAMP) do not result in the acquisition of CPP but increase locomotor activation. By contrast, RMTg infusions of the M4 muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonist Tropicamide result in the acquisition of CPP but do not increase locomotor activation. The rewarding effects of RMTg Tropicamide infusions are dopamine-dependent …

Trust In Government Institutions And Tax Morale, Antonios M. Koumpias, Gabriel Leonardo, Jorge Martinez-Vazquez Feb 2020

Trust In Government Institutions And Tax Morale, Antonios M. Koumpias, Gabriel Leonardo, Jorge Martinez-Vazquez

ICEPP Working Papers

What actions do governments around the world take that may affect individuals’ trust in the government that positively influence tax morale (or a positive attitude toward tax compliance)? This paper researches which are the most salient government institutions that breed individual trust and the extent to which this trust ends up increasing citizens’ tax morale. We use cross-country survey information from the World Values Survey and the Freedom House spanning 92 countries and six survey waves during the period 1981-2014. Conditional on the level of political rights and civil liberties, we confirm prior evidence that trust in government organizations positively …

Off-Label Use Of Recreational Cannabis: Acid Reflux In Colorado, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Sarah S. Stith, Jacob M. Vigil Feb 2020

Off-Label Use Of Recreational Cannabis: Acid Reflux In Colorado, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Sarah S. Stith, Jacob M. Vigil

Economics

Medical cannabis access has been shown to affect clinical health outcomes and health care spending. Unlike medical access, which requires a doctor's recommendation for treatment and only applies to the limited conditions approved under the state's medical cannabis program, recreational access makes cannabis available over-the-counter (OTC). This may create additional benefits through off-label cannabis use to treat unlisted conditions, such as acid reflux, which affects two out of three Americans. Using the roll out of recreational dispensaries in Colorado in 2014, we estimate the change in retailers' market share of antacid medications using a difference-in-differences design. Antacid market share decreases …

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader Feb 2020

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

Reactive Attachment Disorder as a whole is a disorder that shows itself in young children. It then has the possibility of affecting the rest of the child’s life and the people that surround the child. There are two types of Reactive Attachment Disorder. The first type is the emotionally withdrawn/inhibited type. This can manifest itself in a few different ways, but the main way is through the child lashing out in fear or anger. This is due to the lack of healthy attachments in their lives. The second subtype is the disinhibited type. This also can manifest itself in multiple …

The Economic Contribution Of Snowmobiling In Maine, Ian Hathaway, Jessica Leahy, Mindy S. Crandall Feb 2020

The Economic Contribution Of Snowmobiling In Maine, Ian Hathaway, Jessica Leahy, Mindy S. Crandall

Forest Resources Student Scholarship

Snowmobiling has been a popular winter pastime in Maine for decades. During the 2018-2019 snowmobiling season, nearly 60,000 snowmobiles were registered in Maine by resident snowmobilers, and over 25,000 snowmobiles were registered by non-residents. Since the 1998 report An Economic Evaluation of Snowmobiling in Maine, overall registrations have increased, and registrations among non-residents have more than doubled.

There has been no comprehensive evaluation of snowmobiling in Maine since the 1998 report completed by the University of Maine in collaboration with the Maine Snowmobile Association and State of Maine Snowmobile Program. In order to update the information on snowmobiling related expenditures, …

Noncooperative Dynamics In Election Interference, David Rushing Dewhurst, Christopher M. Danforth, Peter Sheridan Dodds Feb 2020

Noncooperative Dynamics In Election Interference, David Rushing Dewhurst, Christopher M. Danforth, Peter Sheridan Dodds

College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Foreign power interference in domestic elections is an existential threat to societies. Manifested through myriad methods from war to words, such interference is a timely example of strategic interaction between economic and political agents. We model this interaction between rational game players as a continuous-time differential game, constructing an analytical model of this competition with a variety of payoff structures. All-or-nothing attitudes by only one player regarding the outcome of the game lead to an arms race in which both countries spend increasing amounts on interference and counterinterference operations. We then confront our model with data pertaining to the Russian …

Upcycling Phosphorus Recovered From Anaerobically Digested Dairy Manure To Support Production Of Vegetables And Flowers, Katherine K. Porterfield, Robert Joblin, Deborah A. Neher, Michael Curtis, Steve Dvorak, Donna M. Rizzo, Joshua W. Faulkner, Eric D. Roy Feb 2020

Upcycling Phosphorus Recovered From Anaerobically Digested Dairy Manure To Support Production Of Vegetables And Flowers, Katherine K. Porterfield, Robert Joblin, Deborah A. Neher, Michael Curtis, Steve Dvorak, Donna M. Rizzo, Joshua W. Faulkner, Eric D. Roy

Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) separates phosphorus (P)-rich fine solids from anaerobically digested dairy manure, creating opportunities to export surplus P to the marketplace as a bagged plant food product. Seedlings of tomato and marigold were amended at various volume per volume (v/v) ratios with plant foods consisting of fine solids upcycled (i.e., transformed into a higher quality product) by drying and blending with other organic residuals. A plate competition assay was conducted to assess the fine solids' potential to suppress the plant pathogen Rhizoctonia solani. Plant foods were comprised of 2.0-2.1% N, 0.8-0.9% P and 0.6-0.8% K. Extractions indicated that …

Are Infographics Worth It? An Assessment Of Information Retention In Relation To Information Embedded In Infographics Poster, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica Abbazio Feb 2020

Are Infographics Worth It? An Assessment Of Information Retention In Relation To Information Embedded In Infographics Poster, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica Abbazio

Library Faculty publications

To a librarian, infographics seem like the perfect tool to disseminate information. Infographics are particularly effective at cutting through the clutter to communicate with audiences, draw the attention of students, and make concepts more digestible in a quick and straightforward way. But do students think so? More importantly, is it worth the time to create infographics if students don't retain key concepts? Building upon earlier survey-based research done at DePauw University, a study will be conducted with music students at DePauw University (Greencastle, IN) and the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. A survey distributed to music students in the …

Georges Lieber Essay Contest on Resistance

I created a protest called the "Where Are the Children Project" to bring attention to the immigrant children held in detention centers. Throughout the project I was able to see how much others cared about helping these children gain better living conditions, and I was able to learn about leadership and resistance. My values helped drive me into action, and the importance of what I was working towards helped me become more confident. After months of protests, the Homestead Detention Center where reports of maltreatment had been especially high was closed, but my work to improve the rights of immigrants …
