Remote Sensing Monitoring Of Vegetation Dynamic Changes After Fire In The Greater Hinggan Mountain Area: The Algorithm And Application For Eliminating Phenological Impacts, Zhibin Huang, Chunxiang Cao, Wei Chen, Min Xu, Yongfeng Dang, Ramesh P. Singh, Barjeece Bashir, Bo Xie, Xiaojuan Lin

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Fires are frequent in boreal forests affecting forest areas. The detection of forest disturbances and the monitoring of forest restoration are critical for forest management. Vegetation phenology information in remote sensing images may interfere with the monitoring of vegetation restoration, but little research has been done on this issue. Remote sensing and the geographic information system (GIS) have emerged as important tools in providing valuable information about vegetation phenology. Based on the MODIS and Landsat time-series images acquired from 2000 to 2018, this study uses the spatio-temporal data fusion method to construct reflectance images of vegetation with a relatively consistent …

Toshiba's Approach To Customer Value Design, Tatsuyuki Mikami Jan 2020

Toshiba's Approach To Customer Value Design, Tatsuyuki Mikami

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This paper describes the practice of "design thinking" in a Japanese company that tends to operate in an in-house-completed work context under a rigorously divided function-based vertical organization. In order to respond to significant shifts in the business environment accompanied by technological advances and changes in people's values, Toshiba introduced "Customer Value Design,” customized design thinking. Customer Value Design is characterized by "co-creation" of customers’ value with customers, "collaboration" in a Cross-Functional Team (CFT) of various experts transcending organizations and categories of expertise, and the "customer perspective" in co-creating experiential value, enterprise value, and social value. In order to compensate …

Spatial And Non-Spatial Drivers For Design Thinking In Knowledge Ecosystems, Onur Mengi Jan 2020

Spatial And Non-Spatial Drivers For Design Thinking In Knowledge Ecosystems, Onur Mengi

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The concept of knowledge ecosystems is an emerging arena to reconsider the design thinking processes from a perspective which comprises different levels of knowledge interaction, and how those are regulated by different dimensions. The issue of design thinking is the most relevant for creative industries emerging around creativity and knowledge and providing innovation, change and impact through interaction, however, existing research inadequately connects design thinking both to physical and non-physical dimensions of knowledge ecosystems. Despite knowledge interaction is vastly regarded as a face-to-face communication for design thinking at micro-scale, it appears and be proficient as it involves non-spatial drivers at …

Thinking And Designing With Design Thinking, Ahmet Can Ozcan, Yasuko Takayama

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Design Thinking is a popular phrase especially for the last ten years penetrating into the discourse of management and design, business and academia in many ways. The contributions in the form of articles, commentaries and reviews in this MGDR Design Thinking Special Issue show us the examples, how and where we can use Design Thinking especially as an integral part of the design process. The area of design is expanding in diverse ways lately and sometimes it is causing the confusion such as Design Thinking is either a magical design tool, or another buzzword destined to go extinct after inevitable …

The Adaptive Functions Of Morality, Michael R. Apostol Jan 2020

The Adaptive Functions Of Morality, Michael R. Apostol

Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards

Morality is the principles that distinguish right from wrong. Humans maintain a moral self-image: the views, judgements, and actions that reflect a sense of right or wrong (Jordan, Leliveld, & Tenbrunsel, 2015). In order to study the impact of moral attitudes on behavior we must understand why certain moral beliefs persist, the function of morality, and why errors in moral judgement occur. With an evolutionary framework, studying the adaptive significance of morality may provide answers to these questions. Researchers have studied morality in nonhuman animals, the development of moral principles, cultural factors that influence ethical frameworks, how morality functions, and …

2020-4 The Category Of Node-And-Choice Extensive-Form Games, Peter A. Streufert Jan 2020

2020-4 The Category Of Node-And-Choice Extensive-Form Games, Peter A. Streufert

Department of Economics Research Reports

This paper develops the category NCG. Its objects are node-and-choice games, which include essentially all extensive-form games. Its morphisms allow arbitrary transformations of a game's nodes, choices, and players, as well as monotonic transformations of the utility functions of the game's players. Among the morphisms are subgame inclusions. Several characterizations and numerous properties of the isomorphisms are derived. Also, the game-theoretic concepts of no-absentmindedness, perfect-information, and (pure-strategy) Nash-equilibrium are shown to be isomorphically invariant. Finally, full subcategories are defined for choice-sequence games and choice-set games, and relationships among these two subcategories and NCG itself are expressed and derived via isomorphic …

Mandatory, Fast, And Fair: Case Outcomes And Procedural Justice In A Family Drug Court, Melanie Fessinger, Katherine Hazen, Jamie Bahm, Jennie Cole-Mossman, Roger Heideman, Eve Brank

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

Objectives: Problem-solving courts are traditionally voluntary in nature to promote procedural justice and to advance therapeutic jurisprudence. The Family Treatment Drug Court (FTDC) in Lancaster County, Nebraska, is a mandatory dependency court for families with allegations of child abuse or neglect related to substance use. We conducted a program evaluation examining parents’ case outcomes and perceptions of procedural justice to examine whether a mandatory problem-solving court could replicate the positive outcomes of problem-solving courts. Methods: We employed a quasi-experimental design that compared FTDC parents to traditional dependency court parents (control parents). We examined court records to gather court orders, compliance …

Is There A Difference Between Democrat And Republican States In The Percentage Of Male High School Students Who Carry Weapons On School Property?, Stephen Church, Wayne L. Davis

Lincoln Memorial University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Compared to other industrialized countries, America is a relatively violent country. The impact of violent crime on America’s youth is alarming and there is no clear solution. School violence is a serious problem that threatens American youth, and politicians are concerned about the high number of violent crimes committed by teens. However, Democrats and Republicans have very different policy platforms on dealing with violent crimes. On the one hand, Republicans support Stand-Your-Ground laws and believe that individuals have a right to protect themselves. On the other hand, Democrats oppose Stand-Your-Ground laws and believe the government is the best source for …

Women’S Perspectives On Human Security: Violence, Environment, And Sustainability, Richard Matthew, Patricia A, Weitsman, Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv, Nora Davis, Tera Dornfeld

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Violent conflict, climate change, and poverty present distinct threats to women worldwide. Importantly, women are leading the way creating and sharing sustainable solutions.

Women’s security is a valuable analytical tool as well as a political agenda insofar as it addresses the specific problems affecting women’s ability to live dignified, free, and secure lives. First, this collection focuses on how conflict impacts women’s lives and well-being, including rape and gendered constructions of ethnicity, race, and religion. The book’s second section looks beyond the scope of large-scale violence to examine human security in terms of environmental policy, food, water, health, and economics. …

Cumulative Socio-Contextual Risk And Child Abuse Potential In Parents Of Young Children: Can Social Support Buffer The Impact?, Moira R. Riley, Lucy Mcgoron, Laura V. Scaramella

Children, Family & Elder Services Publications

Child abuse potential refers to characteristics and practices closely linked to child abuse. Past investigations document that the number of risk factors parents experience is a correlate of child abuse potential. The purpose of this investigation was to test a model with multiple domains of risk including cumulative socio-contextual risk, parenting locus of control, children’s externalizing behavior problems, social support, and child abuse potential. Using self-report data from eighty-seven mothers of children between the ages of 1–5 years old, bivariate correlations and linear regression analyses revealed that cumulative socio-contextual risk was positively associated with child abuse potential and that this …

You Shall Not Pass: How Facial Variability And Feedback Affect The Detection Of Low-Prevalence Fake Ids, Dawn R. Weatherford, William B. Erickson, Jasmyne Thomas, Mary E. Walker, Barret Schein

Psychology Faculty Publications

In many real-world settings, individuals rarely present another person’s ID, which increases the likelihood that a screener will fail to detect it. Three experiments examined how within-person variability (i.e., differences between two images of the same person) and feedback may have influenced criterion shifting, thought to be one of the sources of the low-prevalence effect (LPE). Participants made identity judgments of a target face and an ID under either high, medium, or low mismatch prevalence. Feedback appeared after every trial, only error trials, or no trials. Experiment 1 used two controlled images taken on the same day. Experiment 2 used …

Laterality Of Eye Use By Bottlenose (Tursiops Truncatus) And Rough-Toothed (Steno Bredanensis) Dolphins While Viewing Predictable And Unpredictable Stimuli, Malin K. Lilley, Amber J. De Vere, Deirdre B. Yeater Jan 2020

Laterality Of Eye Use By Bottlenose (Tursiops Truncatus) And Rough-Toothed (Steno Bredanensis) Dolphins While Viewing Predictable And Unpredictable Stimuli, Malin K. Lilley, Amber J. De Vere, Deirdre B. Yeater

Psychology Faculty Publications

Laterality of eye use has been increasingly studied in cetaceans. Research supports that many cetacean species keep prey on the right side while feeding and preferentially view unfamiliar objects with the right eye. In contrast, the left eye has been used more by calves while in close proximity to their mothers. Despite some discrepancies across and within species, laterality of eye use generally indicates functional specialization of brain hemispheres in cetaceans. The present study aimed to examine laterality of eye use in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) under managed care. Subjects were …

Completing The Cycle: Creating A Data Management Services Program, Scott Bacon, Eric Resnis, Ariana Baker

Library Faculty Presentations

The implementation of Coastal Carolina University’s Data Management Services program is explored in this presentation. Our library continued to see growth in data management support requests from researchers, so we felt the need to programmatically develop data management services to serve those needs. We assembled a Data Management Services Working Group to examine what types of services were being offered at other M1 institutions. A research data management life cycle was then developed to serve as a standard framework. The services we currently offer were then integrated with those we knew our faculty wanted. We also explored services apart from …

© The Author(s) 2020. The Enhanced Assess, Acknowledge, Act (EAAA) program has been shown to reduce sexual assaults experienced by university students who identify as women. Prevention researchers emphasize testing theory-based mechanisms once positive outcomes related to effectiveness are established. We assessed the process by which EAAA’s positive outcomes are achieved in a sample of 857 first year university students. EAAA’s goals are to increase risk detection in social interactions, decrease obstacles to risk detection or resistance with known men, and increase women’s use of effective self-defense. We used chained multiple mediator modeling to assess the combined effects of the …
