Engaged Service Learning Shapes Students’ Individual Identities, Fostering Community Stewardship, Grace Nelson, Ali Al-Ghaithi, Haley Jessen
Center for Engagement and Community Development
Service learning creates a space for transformative learning to occur, employing a framework that unites practice and theory with reflection. Service learning that gives students a sense of responsibility for outcomes and is perceived as significant enhances student efficacy. This integrative work meaningfully connects students to a deeper understanding of academia, the community, and personal identity. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has a Service Learning Academy (SLA) that facilitates service learning projects. We analyzed qualitative responses of open-ended questions collected from a post-survey given to UNO students enrolled in a service learning course in the spring or fall …

Special Olympic Community-Engaged Research Project, Andrew Wefald
Center for Engagement and Community Development
For the past several years we have partnered with the Manhattan, KS Special Olympic community as an avenue to develop students’ leadership skills and spark an interest in community engagement. This semester we plan to begin a Community-Engaged research project with our partner with the goal of doing research ‘with’.Our first step is to convene all the potential stakeholders for a facilitated discussion about potential research ideas, questions, goals, outcomes, etc. as a deliberative process.

The Sutherland Foundation Innovation Lab will be a new space in Hale Library at Kansas State University with emerging technologies including virtual and augmented reality systems, 3D printers, and recording studios. Participants will engage in creative thinking exercises to generate programming ideas or civic media projects for communities and individuals using the space. To prepare for the variety of audiences and activities in this new space, the Sunderland Foundation Innovation Lab coordinating committee has facilitated interactive presentations with audiences at venues related to research, teaching and learning, diversity and inclusion. We look forward to building on those ideas by brainstorming …

Delete Your Account: A Methodological Investigation Of Leadership Trait Analysis And Its Ability To Utilize Twitter As Spontaneous Material, Jimmy Hinton
Senior Independent Study Theses
Given the important roles political leaders occupy within the international arena, it is vital that we understand the way they behave. In order to better understand a political leader, it is imperative that we analyze their personality traits. This study investigates the methodological applicability of Leadership Trait Analysis by asking the following research question: Is an analysis of social media an effective way to measure the Leadership Trait Analysis personality traits of international leaders? In order to answer this question, the study utilizes Leadership Trait Analysis to analyze the personality traits portrayed within the traditional spontaneous media (interviews/press conferences) for …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Abstract: This Course ensured that faculty learned about—and implemented—the approaches that improve engagement and persistence and promote deeper learning. This 25-module online course concentrated on teaching practices effective in face-to-face instruction. Comprehensive in scope and organized around five units of study, faculty members learned together in cohorts and implement approaches to:
- design an effective course and class
- establish a productive learning environment
- use active learning techniques
- promote higher order thinking, and assess in ways that inform instruction and promote deeper levels of learning
Each interdisciplinary cohort is facilitated by a celebrated CSUSB faculty member. Our local facilitators are 2019 Outstanding …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Pursuant to the university’s mission to enhance pedagogy for the upcoming Q2S transition, I decided to enroll in the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) program to pursue a Certificate in Effective Teaching Practices. This program was offered through the Teaching Resource Center and entailed 25 online modules of 50-75 hours of online coursework. The program requires participants to implement lessons from the modules in the classroom, reflect upon the successes and challenges of implementation, and outline plans for future refinement.
Participation in the course focused on five content areas: Designing an Effective Course and Class, Establishing a Productive …

Influence Of Peer Mentors On The College Transition Experience Through Program Partnerships, Sara Durazo-Demoss, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
The purpose of this paper is to describe how the student mentoring program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) increased peer-to-peer services by collaborating with campus constituents to develop first-year experience program partnerships. This paper showcases CSUSB’s student mentoring program partnerships with Coyote First STEP, a summer transition program, and the Library Ambassador program initiative, and how these partnerships have evolved to engage virtually with students during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a pilot year, student participants completed survey data showing that program partnerships for student leaders enhances the professional and leadership identity development of the mentors. By partnering with …

Teaching Skills Study Awards (TSSA) Reports
A modified model of legibility vis-a-vis salon session was adapted for use my class, immediately, after attending the conference. Also, I took two students from my Winter Quarter class (Anth 301, Anthropological Theory) to the conference held that Spring Quarter 2019. They presented their research papers completed in Anth 301. In two of my Spring Quarter courses, I applied the modified model, by pairing student partners who were asked in sequential order to kick off the discussion, which then opened up to engage all students into the participatory process. The idea of running discussions like mini salon sessions (salon sessions …

© 2019 Elsevier Inc. Resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI) is widely used to assess how strongly different brain areas are connected. However, this connection obtained by RS-fMRI, which is called functional connectivity (FC), simply refers to the correlation of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals across time it has yet to be quantified how accurately FC reflects cellular connectivity (CC). In this study, we elucidated this relationship using RS-fMRI and quantitative tracer data in marmosets. In addition, we also elucidated the effects of distance between two brain regions on the relationship between FC and CC across seed region. To calculate FC, we …

© 2020 The Author(s) Self-referential processing (i.e., self-schemas that guide processing of self-descriptive information) emerges early in youth, with deeper encoding of negative self-descriptors and/or shallower encoding of positive self-descriptors causally linked to depression. However, the relationship between depressogenic self-schemas and brain structure is unclear. We investigated associations between self-schemas and regional grey matter volume (GMV) in 84 never-depressed preadolescents oversampled for depression risk based on maternal depression history. Self-schemas were assessed using a Self-Referent Encoding Task (SRET) and regional GMV was indexed via voxel-based morphometry analysis of structural magnetic resonance imaging data. Youths’ positive self-schemas were associated with greater …

© 2020 Margaret T. M. Prenger et al. Parkinson's disease (PD) is typically well recognized by its characteristic motor symptoms (e.g., bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor). The cognitive symptoms of PD are increasingly being acknowledged by clinicians and researchers alike. However, PD also involves a host of emotional and communicative changes which can cause major disruptions to social functioning. These incude problems producing emotional facial expressions (i.e., facial masking) and emotional speech (i.e., dysarthria), as well as difficulties recognizing the verbal and nonverbal emotional cues of others. These social symptoms of PD can result in severe negative social consequences, including stigma, …

We study physician agency and optimal payment policy in the context of an expensive medication used in dialysis care. Using Medicare claims data we estimate a structural model of treatment decisions, in which physicians differ in their altruism and marginal costs, and this heterogeneity is unobservable to the government. In a novel application of nonlinear pricing methods, we theoretically characterize the optimal unrestricted contract in this screening environment with multidimensional heterogeneity. We combine these results with the estimated model to construct the optimal contract and simulate counterfactual outcomes. The optimal contract is a flexible fee-for-service contract, which pays for reported …
