(R2026) Special Smarandache Ruled Surfaces According To Flc Frame In E^3, Süleyman Şenyurt, Kebire Hilal Ayvacı, Davut Canlı

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this study, we introduce some special ruled surfaces according to the Flc frame of a given polynomial curve. We name these ruled surfaces as TD2, TD1 ve D2D1 Smarandache ruled surfaces and provide their characteristics such as Gauss and mean curvatures in order to specify their developability and minimality conditions. Moreover, we examine the conditions if the parametric curves of the surfaces are asymptotic, geodesic or curvature line. Such conditions are also argued in terms of the developability and minimality conditions. Finally, we give an example and picture the corresponding graphs of ruled …

(R2033) Resonant Curve Due To Perturbations Of Geo-Synchronous Satellite Including Effect Of Earth’S Equatorial Ellipticity, Sushil Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Virendra Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we have investigated resonant curve due to frequencies − angular rate of rotation of the Earth and the rate of change of Earth’s equatorial ellipticity parameter. Perturbation equations are used to convert the non-linear equations of motion of geo-synchronous satellite to the linear form. With the help of graphs, we have shown the effect of Earth’s equatorial ellipticity parameter on oscillatory amplitude and variation in orbital radius of satellite. By defining different perturbations, we have also drawn resonant curve due to frequencies steady-state orbital angular rate of satellite and the rate of change of Earth’s equatorial ellipticity …

(R2052) Flow Patterns For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids In A Cylindrical Pipe, Erick Sanchez, Dambaru Bhatta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A fully developed laminar steady flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid in a horizontal cylindrical pipe is considered here. Flow patterns for an incompressible, viscous fluid for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids such as shear-thinning, shear-thickening and Bingham plastic fluids are analyzed in this study. Assuming that the flow is only due to the wall shear stress and the pressure drop, the velocity component in the axial direction for these cases is derived. Computational results of the velocity profiles for various cases are obtained using MATLAB and presented in graphical forms. It is observed that the velocity profile is parabolic …

Haptic is the modality that complements traditional multimedia, i.e., audiovisual, to evolve the next wave of innovation at which the Internet data stream can be exchanged to enable remote skills and control applications. This will require ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability to evolve the mobile experience into the era of Digital Twin and Tactile Internet. While the 5th generation of mobile networks is not yet widely deployed, Long-Term Evolution (LTE-A) latency remains much higher than the 1 ms requirement for the Tactile Internet and therefore the Digital Twin. This work investigates an interesting solution based on the incorporation of Software-defined …

(R2028) A Brief Note On Space Time Fractional Order Thermoelastic Response In A Layer, Navneet Lamba, Jyoti Verma, Kishor Deshmukh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this study, a one-dimensional layer of a solid is used to investigate the exact analytical solution of the heat conduction equation with space-time fractional order derivatives and to analyze its associated thermoelastic response using a quasi-static approach. The assumed thermoelastic problem was subjected to certain initial and boundary conditions at the initial and final ends of the layer. The memory effects and long-range interaction were discussed with the help of the Caputo-type fractional-order derivative and finite Riesz fractional derivative. Laplace transform and Fourier transform techniques for spatial coordinates were used to investigate the solution of the temperature distribution and …

(R2027) A New Class Of Pareto Distribution: Estimation And Its Applications, Anitta Susan Aniyan, Dais George

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The classical Pareto distribution is a positively skewed and right heavy-tailed lifetime distribution having a lot many applications in various fields of science and social science. In this work, via logarithmic trans-formed method, a new three parameter lifetime distribution, an extension of classical Pareto distribution is generated. The different structural properties of the new distribution are studied. The model parameters are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedure. When all the three parameters of the distribution are unknown, the Bayes estimators cannot be obtained in a closed form and hence, the Lindley’s approximation under squared error loss …

Battery Parameter Analysis Through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy At Different State Of Charge Levels, Yuchao Wu, Sneha Sundaresan, Balakumar Balasingam

Computer Science Publications

This paper presents a systematic approach to extract electrical equivalent circuit model (ECM) parameters of the Li-ion battery (LIB) based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Particularly, the proposed approach is suitable to practical applications where the measurement noise can be significant, resulting in a low signal-to-noise ratio. Given the EIS measurements, the proposed approach can be used to obtain the ECM parameters of a battery. Then, a time domain approach is employed to validate the accuracy of estimated ECM parameters. In order to investigate whether the ECM parameters vary as the battery’s state of charge (SOC) changes, the EIS experiment …

Strongly Invertible Knots, Equivariant Slice Genera, And An Equivariant Algebraic Concordance Group, Allison N. Miller, M. Powell Jun 2023

Strongly Invertible Knots, Equivariant Slice Genera, And An Equivariant Algebraic Concordance Group, Allison N. Miller, M. Powell

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We use the Blanchfield form to obtain a lower bound on the equivariant slice genus of a strongly invertible knot. For our main application, let K be a strongly invertible genus one slice knot with nontrivial Alexander polynomial. We show that the equivariant slice genus of an equivariant connected sum #n K is at least n/4. We also formulate an equivariant algebraic concordance group, and show that the kernel of the forgetful map to the classical algebraic concordance group is infinite rank.

Engaging Students With High-Stakes Problems, Deepak Basyal Jun 2023

Engaging Students With High-Stakes Problems, Deepak Basyal

Mathematics and Statistics

Engaging students in meaningful mathematics problem-solving is the intention of many education stakeholders around the world. Research suggests that the implementation of high-stakes problems in mathematics teaching is one way to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding. Many carefully crafted open-ended problems constitute high-stakes problems, and proper use of such problems in teaching and learning not only encourages learners’ flexible thinking but also helps detect their misconceptions. However, what is less practiced and understood is: how exactly one should aim to implement such problems in a classroom setting. Teaching pre-service middle school teachers for a few years using high-stakes (mostly open-ended problems) …

The Role Of The Armed Forces Of The Philippines (Afp) In Disaster Response And Adaptation Strategies To Climatic Disasters In Manila, Edmundo Nicolas Jr. Jun 2023

The Role Of The Armed Forces Of The Philippines (Afp) In Disaster Response And Adaptation Strategies To Climatic Disasters In Manila, Edmundo Nicolas Jr.

Geography Masters Research Papers

This study described the roles of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) in Metro Manila and how climate-induced hazards impact the role of the military. It used a qualitative approach, which involved semi- structured interviews among AFP officers and barangay leaders with expertise and experience in DRRM and an analysis of selected policy documents and military doctrine. These methods revealed that: (1) the military acts as a political first-aid, since they are the first responders – thus, the face of the local government – in climactic disasters during peacetime; (2) the military is …

Understanding Potential Reservoir Interconnectivity Between Two Contemporaneous Volcanoes During The Onset Of Cone-Building Activity, Middle Sister And South Sister, Central Oregon, Emma Calvert

Geology Graduate and Undergraduate Student Scholarship

Klah Klanee (Three Points) is located in the central Cascades near Bend, Oregon. The Three Sisters Volcanic Complex (TSVC) lies at a tectonically complex intersection of the Cascade Subduction Zone, the Basin and Range Province, and the High Lava Plains. The TSVC is a compositionally diverse volcanic field consisting of four stratovolcanoes and numerous periphery cones and vents. Middle Sister and South Sister are the youngest of the stratovolcanoes and they share a largely contemporaneous and semi-alternating episodic eruptive history. These parallel histories could indicate a complex, interconnected magmatic root system within the crust below the TSVC and the surrounding …

End-To-End Gpu Acceleration Of Low-Order-Refined Preconditioning For High-Order Finite Element Discretizations, Will Pazner, Tzanio Kolev, Jean-Sylvain Camier

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, we present algorithms and implementations for the end-to-end GPU acceleration of matrix-free low-order-refined preconditioning of high-order finite element problems. The methods described here allow for the construction of effective preconditioners for high-order problems with optimal memory usage and computational complexity. The preconditioners are based on the construction of a spectrally equivalent low-order discretization on a refined mesh, which is then amenable to, for example, algebraic multigrid preconditioning. The constants of equivalence are independent of mesh size and polynomial degree. For vector finite element problems in H(curl) and H(div) (e.g., for electromagnetic or radiation diffusion problems), …

Understanding Masked Autoencoders Via Hierarchical Latent Variable Models, Lingjing Kong, Martin Q. Ma, Guangyi Chen, Eric P. Xing, Yuejie Chi, Louis Philippe Morency, Kun Zhang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Masked autoencoder (MAE), a simple and effective self-supervised learning framework based on the reconstruction of masked image regions, has recently achieved prominent success in a variety of vision tasks. Despite the emergence of intriguing empirical observations on MAE, a theoretically principled understanding is still lacking. In this work, we formally characterize and justify existing empirical in-sights and provide theoretical guarantees of MAE. We formulate the underlying data-generating process as a hierarchical latent variable model, and show that under reasonable assumptions, MAE provably identifies a set of latent variables in the hierarchical model, explaining why MAE can extract high-level information from …

Assessing Boil Water Notices As Health-Risk Communication: Risk Perceptions, Efficacy, And Compliance During Winter Storm Uri, Ashleigh M. Day, Sydney O'Shay, Khairul Islam, Matthew W. Seeger, Shawn P. Mcelmurry

Open Data at Wayne State

Winter Storm Uri was an extreme disaster that impacted much of the United States during February of 2021. Texas and Oklahoma were generally not prepared for such an event and experienced massive power grid failures. This led to cascading risks including water system disruptions and many boil water notices (BWNs). The breakdown of some communication channels and the inability to enact protective actions due to power outages, as well as travel limitations on public roads, complicated both dissemination and implementation. Under these conditions, a non-representative, cross-sectional, survey was collected to assess individuals experience BWNs and how perceived efficacy impacts compliance. …

Population Modeling With Machine Learning Can Enhance Measures Of Mental Health - Open-Data Replication, Ty Easley, Ruiqi Chen, Kayla Hannon, Rosie Dutt, Janine Bijsterbosch

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Efforts to predict trait phenotypes based on functional MRI data from large cohorts have been hampered by low prediction accuracy and/or small effect sizes. Although these findings are highly replicable, the small effect sizes are somewhat surprising given the presumed brain basis of phenotypic traits such as neuroticism and fluid intelligence. We aim to replicate previous work and additionally test multiple data manipulations that may improve prediction accuracy by addressing data pollution challenges. Specifically, we added additional fMRI features, averaged the target phenotype across multiple measurements to obtain more accurate estimates of the underlying trait, balanced the target phenotype's distribution …

Learning Finite Mixture Of Ising Graphical Models, Chong Gu Jun 2023

Learning Finite Mixture Of Ising Graphical Models, Chong Gu

Dissertations

The Ising model is valuable in examining complex interactions within a system, but its estimation is challenging. In this work, we proposed penalized likelihood procedures to infer conditional dependence structure when observed data come from heterogeneous resources in high-dimensional setting. The proposed method can be efficiently implemented by taking advantage of coordinate-ascent, minorization–maximization principles and EM algorithm. A BIC-type criterion will be utilized for the selection of the tuning parameter in the penalized likelihood approaches. The effectiveness of the proposed method is supported by simulation studies and a real-world example.

The Mobility Of Long-Lived Radioisotopes And Their Burial In The Marine Environment, Neil Redmond Jun 2023

The Mobility Of Long-Lived Radioisotopes And Their Burial In The Marine Environment, Neil Redmond

Dissertations

Marine sediments record chemical signals that reflect past environmental conditions. It is important to establish how these signals are created and whether they may be altered over time so that they can be useful for reconstructing ocean history. Measurements of uranium isotopes are used as a novel proxy for sedimentary diagenetic processes (Chapter 2). Because 234U can be ejected from mineral lattice during the decay of 238U, it creates a pool of U in porewater that is potentially mobilized and then deposited elsewhere in the core. We found that alpha-recoiled 234U is sensitive to differences in sediment …

Utilizing Mixed Graphical Network Models To Explore Parent Psychological Symptoms And Their Centrality To Parent Mental Health In Households With High Child Screen Usage, Piper F. Stacey, Nicholas C. Jacobson, Damien Lekkas

Computer Science Senior Theses

Especially among adolescents, screens are being used more than ever. In conjunction with this trend, mental illness is increasingly prevalent among both adults and children, and parental psychological problems are shown to be associated with children's TV watching, video watching, and gaming (Pulkki-Råback et al., 2022). This study aims to approach parent mental illness symptom by symptom to explore which specific symptoms are most central to parent psychological problems in households where children show high screen time behaviors. We draw from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD Study®), a nationwide sample of 11,875 children aged 10-13 collected by …

Can The Mdcdw Condensate Withstand The Heat Of A Cold Neutron Star?, William Gyory Jun 2023

Can The Mdcdw Condensate Withstand The Heat Of A Cold Neutron Star?, William Gyory

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The correct description of strongly interacting matter at low temperatures and moderately high densities—in particular the conditions realized inside neutron stars—is still unknown. We review some recent results on the magnetic dual chiral density wave (MDCDW) phase, a candidate phase of quark matter for this region of the QCD phase diagram. We highlight the effects of magnetic fields and temperature on the condensate, which can be explored using a high-order Ginzburg-Landau (GL) expansion. We also explain how the condensate's nontrivial topology, which arises due to the asymmetry in the lowest Landau level modes, affects its physical properties. Finally, we comment …

Covalent Adaptable Networks For Wood Coatings, Jachin Boaz Clarke Jun 2023

Covalent Adaptable Networks For Wood Coatings, Jachin Boaz Clarke

Materials Engineering

Wood swells and shrinks causing problems with seasonal humidity. Applying thick coatings of reactive finishes based on cross-linked polyurethane, epoxy, or polyesters can slow moisture-vapor exchange. However, the use of thick coatings leads to cracking and crazing sooner than thin finishes. This research proposes the addition of 3.3 mol % triazabicyclodecene, a conventionally used covalent adaptable network catalyst, in a commercially available polyester-based wood coating. The self-healing of the wood coating is tested using DMA stress relaxation and compression molding. The result from DMA renders inconclusive and compression molding indicates the novel wood coating oxidizes at elevated temperatures. The wood …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Two types of services are explored in this paper: regular server and main server, both of which provide both regular and optional services. Customers arrive using the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP), and service time is allocated based on phase type. The regular server uses the main server as a resource. Customers’ service at the primary server is disrupted as a result. When the queue size is empty, the main server can take several vacations. This system has been represented as a QBD Process that investigates steady state with the use of matrix analytic techniques, employing finite-dimensional block matrices. Our model’s …

Detecting Coherent Transport Structures In Ocean Surface Flows, Leah Hoogstra Jun 2023

Detecting Coherent Transport Structures In Ocean Surface Flows, Leah Hoogstra

Master's Theses

Ocean surface transport plays a critical role in marine ecosystems, influencing the complex spatiotemporal patterns of both marine species and pollutants. The theory of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) aims to identify fundamental patterns within time-dependent, nonlinear fluid flows. LCSs are material surfaces that act as dividing lines which fluid does not cross for a relevant period of time. LCS theory is still under active development, and there are multiple proposed ways to mathematically determine an LCS. Each proposed mathematical definition aims to capture the same physical properties, and some capture those properties more successfully and consistently than others. Here we …
