The Generalized Reciprocal Super Catalan Matrix, Emrah Kiliç, Talha Arikan Jan 2016

The Generalized Reciprocal Super Catalan Matrix, Emrah Kiliç, Talha Arikan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The reciprocal super Catalan matrix studied by Prodinger is further generalized, introducing two additional parameters. Explicit formulae are derived for the $LU$-decomposition and their inverses, as well as the Cholesky decomposition. The approach is to use $q$-analysis and to leave the justification of the necessary identities to the $q$-version of Zeilberger's celebrated algorithm.

The notions of soft uniform structure, soft uniform continious function, and operations on soft uniform space are introduced and their basic properties are investigated.

Regularity And Projective Dimension Of Some Class Of Well-Covered Graphs, Esfandiyar Lashani, Ali Soleyman Jahan Jan 2016

Regularity And Projective Dimension Of Some Class Of Well-Covered Graphs, Esfandiyar Lashani, Ali Soleyman Jahan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we study the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of an edge ideal associated with a graph in a special class of well-covered graphs. We show that if $G$ belongs to the class $\mathcal {SQ}$, then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/I(G)$ will be equal to induced matching number of $G$. For this class of graphs we also compute the projective dimension of the ring $R/I(G)$. As a corollary we describe these invariants in well-covered forests, well-covered chordal graphs, Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graphs, and simplicial graphs.

Some Normality Criteria, Gopal Datt, Sanjay Kumar Jan 2016

Some Normality Criteria, Gopal Datt, Sanjay Kumar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article, we prove some normality criteria for a family of meromorphic functions, which involves sharing of a nonzero value by certain differential monomials generated by the members of the family. These results generalize some of the results of Schwick.

Numerical Approach For Solving Space Fractional Orderdiffusion Equations Using Shifted Chebyshev Polynomials Of The Fourth Kind, Nasser Hassan Swielam, Abd Elhameed Mohamed Nagy, Adel Abd Elaziz El Sayed Jan 2016

Numerical Approach For Solving Space Fractional Orderdiffusion Equations Using Shifted Chebyshev Polynomials Of The Fourth Kind, Nasser Hassan Swielam, Abd Elhameed Mohamed Nagy, Adel Abd Elaziz El Sayed

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, a new approach for solving space fractional order diffusion equations is proposed. The fractional derivative in this problem is in the Caputo sense. This approach is based on shifted Chebyshev polynomials of the fourth kind with the collocation method. The finite difference method is used to reduce the equations obtained by our approach for a system of algebraic equations that can be efficiently solved. Numerical results obtained with our approach are presented and compared with the results obtained by other numerical methods. The numerical results show the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Rings Associated To Coverings Of Finite $P$-Groups, Gary Walls, Linhong Wang Jan 2016

Rings Associated To Coverings Of Finite $P$-Groups, Gary Walls, Linhong Wang

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In general the endomorphisms of a nonabelian group do not form a ring under the operations of addition and composition of functions. Several papers have dealt with the ring of functions defined on a group, which are endomorphisms when restricted to the elements of a cover of the group by abelian subgroups. We give an algorithm that allows us to determine the elements of the ring of functions of a finite $p$-group that arises in this manner when the elements of the cover are required to be either cyclic or elementary abelian of rank $2$. This enables us to determine …

Every Norm Is A Restriction Of An Order-Unit Norm, Mert Çağlar, Zafer Ercan Jan 2016

Every Norm Is A Restriction Of An Order-Unit Norm, Mert Çağlar, Zafer Ercan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We point out the equivalence of the fact that every norm on a vector space is a restriction of an order-unit norm to that of Paulsen's construction concerning generalization of operator systems.

Classification Of Natural Phytoplankton Populations With Fluorescence Excitation-Based Imaging Multivariate Optical Computing, Shawna Kathleen Tazik Jan 2016

Classification Of Natural Phytoplankton Populations With Fluorescence Excitation-Based Imaging Multivariate Optical Computing, Shawna Kathleen Tazik

Theses and Dissertations

Phytoplankton account for the majority of the primary productivity in the ocean and contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle through photosynthesis. A quantitative characterization of phytoplankton cell size and taxonomic composition is essential for understanding marine biogeochemical cycles, quantifying carbon export, and for predicting the ocean’s response to future climate change. Our labs have developed a new instrument for this purpose that combines fluorescence excitation spectroscopy with an all-optical approach to multivariate statistics called multivariate optical computing (MOC). The instrument, known as the Shipboard Streak Imaging Multivariate Optical Computing (SSIMOC) photometer, is a simple filter photometer that images the …

Revealing Malicious Contents Hidden In The Internet, Muhammad Nazmus Sakib Jan 2016

Revealing Malicious Contents Hidden In The Internet, Muhammad Nazmus Sakib

Theses and Dissertations

In this age of ubiquitous communication in which we can stay constantly connected with the rest of the world, for most of the part, we have to be grateful for one particular invention - the Internet. But as the popularity of Internet connectivity grows, it has become a very dangerous place where objects of malicious content and intent can be hidden in plain sight. In this dissertation, we investigate different ways to detect and capture these malicious contents hidden in the Internet. First, we propose an automated system that mimics high-risk browsing activities such as clicking on suspicious online ads, …

Using Synthetic Lectins To Investigate Metastatic Potential In Colon Cancer, Erin E. Gatrone Jan 2016

Using Synthetic Lectins To Investigate Metastatic Potential In Colon Cancer, Erin E. Gatrone

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is a disease that affects millions of people each year and it is well established that early diagnosis is a key factor towards improving survival rate, with that in mind there is a great need for better diagnostics. From the earliest onset of cancer, changes can be detected in the type and amount of carbohydrates expressed by the cancer cells, i.e., aberrant glycosylation. This process results in differing glycosylation patterns that can be used to detect cancer. Aberrant glycosylation can also greatly affect the potential of cancer cells to metastasize and can be used to stage the disease as …

Understanding Challenges And Tradeoffs In Istar Tool Development, Tong Li, Alicia M. Grubb, Jennifer Horkoff Jan 2016

Understanding Challenges And Tradeoffs In Istar Tool Development, Tong Li, Alicia M. Grubb, Jennifer Horkoff

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Many iStar-based modeling and analysis tools have been developed for specific iStar-related purposes (e.g., tools enumerated in iStar wiki). Despite the proliferation of tools, new tools keep being built, taking resources and time and possibly "reinventing the wheel" in terms of tool functionality. To gain an in-depth understanding of this situation, we are interested in the challenges and tradeoffs in creating iStar tools. In this paper, we examine three diverse tools as case studies, illustrating the challenges and tradeoffs from the developer's perspective. Based on such studies, we establish a goal model to capture the collected knowledge, which can help …

Growingleaf: Supporting Requirements Evolution Over Time, Alicia M. Grubb, Gary Song, Marsha Chechik Jan 2016

Growingleaf: Supporting Requirements Evolution Over Time, Alicia M. Grubb, Gary Song, Marsha Chechik

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Goal modeling and analysis techniques help stakeholders consider possible tradeoff alternatives in their requirements and answer "what if" questions about those alternatives. Software projects today exist in an ephemeral state, and current goal modeling approaches do not answer questions about model evolution and changes in actors' intentionality. We have developed a technique [8] that allows stakeholders to explicate the dynamic nature of their intentional elements, and ask questions about how this dynamicity affects project outcomes. In this paper, we present GrowingLeaf , a new web-based goal modeling and analysis tool that implements this technique for iStar models. We discuss its …

An Assessment Of The Validity Of The Kinetic Model For Liquid-Vapor Phase Change By Examining Cryogenic Propellants, Kishan Bellur Jan 2016

An Assessment Of The Validity Of The Kinetic Model For Liquid-Vapor Phase Change By Examining Cryogenic Propellants, Kishan Bellur

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Evaporation is ubiquitous in nature and occurs even in a microgravity space envi- ronment. Long term space missions require storage of cryogenic propellents and an accurate prediction of phase change rates. Kinetic theory has been used to model and predict evaporation rates for over a century but the reported values of accommodation coefficients are highly inconsistent and no accurate data is available for cryogens. The proposed study involves a combined experimental and computational approach to ex- tract the accommodation coefficients. Neutron imaging is used as the visualization technique due to the difference in attenuation between the cryogen and the metallic …

On The Limits And Practice Of Automatically Designing Self-Stabilization, Alex Klinkhamer Jan 2016

On The Limits And Practice Of Automatically Designing Self-Stabilization, Alex Klinkhamer

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A protocol is said to be self-stabilizing when the distributed system executing it is guaranteed to recover from any fault that does not cause permanent damage. Designing such protocols is hard since they must recover from all possible states, therefore we investigate how feasible it is to synthesize them automatically. We show that synthesizing stabilization on a fixed topology is NP-complete in the number of system states. When a solution is found, we further show that verifying its correctness on a general topology (with any number of processes) is undecidable, even for very simple unidirectional rings. Despite these negative results, …

Diffuse Co2 Degassing And The Origin Of Volcanic Gas Variability From Rincón De La Vieja, Miravalles And Tenorio Volcanoes, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, Aurelia Liegler

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Volcanic gas emissions are an important key component for monitoring volcanic activity and magmatic input of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as well as the assessment of geothermal potential in volcanic regions. Diffuse soil degassing of CO2 at Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles volcanoes, assessed with the commonly accepted accumulation chamber method, showed the concentration of gas emissions in evident hydrothermal surface features in secondary gas emission zones of the volcanoes. Analyses of fumarolic gases were conducted to investigate similarities and differences between the volcanoes and the possibility of continued magma injection into their source(s). An output of …

Investigation Of The Resistance To Demagnetization In Bulk Rare-Earth Magnets Comprised Of Crystallographically-Aligned, Single-Domain Crystallites With Modified Intergranular Phase, Jie Li Jan 2016

Investigation Of The Resistance To Demagnetization In Bulk Rare-Earth Magnets Comprised Of Crystallographically-Aligned, Single-Domain Crystallites With Modified Intergranular Phase, Jie Li

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The research presented in this dissertation investigates whether an increased coercivity of Neodymium-Iron-Boron (Nd2Fe14B) based bulk magnets at elevated temperature (160°C), which is now only obtainable by substituting ~7wt% dysprosium (Dy) for a portion of neodymium (Nd), can be achieved through specific microstructural modifications with decreased Dy concentrations. The approach is to reduce the size of individual crystallographically-aligned grains in the magnet so that each grain can only support a single magnetic domain and to simultaneously dilute the Nd-Fe inter-granular phase present in conventional magnets with a non-Fe-containing, Nd-rich phase (Nd-Cu alloy) in an attempt to partially magnetically isolate the …

Using Natural Language Processing And Qualitative Analysis To Intervene In Gang Violence: A Collaboration Between Social Work Researchers And Data Scientists, Desmond Upton Patton, Kathleen Mckeown, Owen Rambow, Jamie C. Macbeth

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The U.S. has the highest rate of firearm-related deaths when compared to other industrialized countries. Violence particularly affects lowincome, urban neighborhoods in cities like Chicago, which saw a 40% increase in firearm violence from 2014 to 2015 to more than 3,000 shooting victims. While recent studies have found that urban, gang-involved individuals curate a unique and complex communication style within and between social media platforms, organizations focused on reducing gang violence are struggling to keep up with the growing complexity of social media platforms and the sheer volume of data they present. In this paper, describe the Digital Urban Violence …

Mind The Gap: The Importance Of Pluralistic Discourse In Computing For Mental Health, R. Jordan Crouser, Morganne Ray Crouser

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A large amount of HCI research leverages studies from psychology to try to understand how humans work. Unfortunately, there is often a disconnect between the tightly- controlled laboratory studies being referenced and the application of this knowledge in practice. At the same time, many mental health practitioners are beginning to turn toward computational tools to help stretch limited resources and support equitable access to mental healthcare. These efforts could be dramatically enhanced by leveraging what the HCI community has learned about promoting active engagement and designing unobtrusive interfaces. By facilitating collaboration between HCI researchers and practitioners in the field of …

Automatically Processing Tweets From Gang-Involved Youth: Towards Detecting Loss And Aggression, Terra Blevins, Robert Kwiatkowski, Jamie C. Macbeth, Kathleen Mckeown, Desmond Patton, Owen Rambow

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Violence is a serious problems for cities like Chicago and has been exacerbated by the use of social media by gang-involved youths for taunting rival gangs. We present a corpus of tweets from a young and powerful female gang member and her communicators, which we have annotated with discourse intention, using a deep read to understand how and what triggered conversations to escalate into aggression. We use this corpus to develop a part-of-speech tagger and phrase table for the variant of English that is used, as well as a classifier for identifying tweets that express grieving and aggression.

Preliminary Seismic Coda Wave Attenuation Study Of Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala, Maximilian Guettinger Jan 2016

Preliminary Seismic Coda Wave Attenuation Study Of Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala, Maximilian Guettinger

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Pacaya volcano is a basaltic complex in the Central American Volcanic Arc in Guatemala. Pacaya has been in an open vent condition since 1961. During January 2015 we deployed 19 short period seismometer stations on Pacaya at distances less than 1.5 kilometers from the summit. The resulting data consisted of tremor and thousands of discrete events associated with ongoing outgassing. Where possible, individual events were identified and located. They were found to be high in the edifice near the vent. We used the decaying codas of these events to model the attenuation structure of the Pacaya edifice, following the energy …

Objective Bayesian Analysis Of A Generalized Lognormal Distribution, Shengnan Li Jan 2016

Objective Bayesian Analysis Of A Generalized Lognormal Distribution, Shengnan Li

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The generalized lognormal distribution plays an important role in various aspects of life testing experiments. We examine Bayesian analysis of this distribution using objective priors (in the general sense of priors constructed using some formal rules) for the model parameters in this paper. Specifically, the derivation of explicit expressions for multiple types of the Jeffreys priors, the reference priors with different group ordering of the parameters, and the first-order matching priors. We investigate the important issue of proper posterior distributions. It is shown that only two of them lead to proper posterior distributions. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to compare …

Effects Of Wildfire And Post-Fire Salvage Logging On Rill Networks And Sediment Delivery In California Forests, Will Olsen Jan 2016

Effects Of Wildfire And Post-Fire Salvage Logging On Rill Networks And Sediment Delivery In California Forests, Will Olsen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Wildfires can increase soil erosion by orders of magnitude over rates in unburned forests and negatively impact aquatic resources. Rill erosion is a dominant erosion and sediment transport mechanism in burned forests, and hydrologically connected rills can form networks on burned hillslopes. At the swale scale (< 10,000 m2), little is known about how rill networks develop under different burn severities over time, their relationship with sediment yields, and the effect of post-fire salvage logging on rill networks and sediment yields.

The first study assessed rill networks and sediment yields in three burn severities in the inland Coast Range of …

A Small-Scale Water Budget Approach And Water Quality Assessment: A Case Study For Calderas Lake, Guatemala, Edrick Ramos

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Increases in water demand and urban development in Calderas community over the past decade have led to questions about the hydrology, water quality, quantity and sustainable management of Calderas Lake micro-basin. However, studies on baseline hydrology are limited for rural communities located inside volcanic origin watersheds of Guatemala. The scope of this study was to characterize the hydrology and establish a method to: 1) quantify a water budget, and 2) qualify the water quality of a lacustrine system that supply water for about 17,000 inhabitants on the state limits or rural Guatemala City. Mean annual rainfall and temperature at the …

First-Principles Studies Of Group Iv And Group V Related Two Dimensional Materials, Gaoxue Wang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Two dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied due to their novel properties and technologically important applications. Especially, the discovery of graphene has stimulated an avalanche of investigations to exploit its novel properties for applications at nanoscale. In the post-silicon era, graphene has been widely regarded as the most promising building blocks for the electronic devices. However, its metallic nature together with sensitivity to the environment leads to somewhat limited scope of applications. A finite band gap in a material is known to be essential for the fabrication of devices such as transistors. Such a limitation associated with graphene has …
