Using A Data Warehouse As Part Of A General Business Process Data Analysis System, Amit Maor Jan 2016

Using A Data Warehouse As Part Of A General Business Process Data Analysis System, Amit Maor

CMC Senior Theses

Data analytics queries often involve aggregating over massive amounts of data, in order to detect trends in the data, make predictions about future data, and make business decisions as a result. As such, it is important that a database management system (DBMS) handling data analytics queries perform well when those queries involve massive amounts of data. A data warehouse is a DBMS which is designed specifically to handle data analytics queries.

This thesis describes the data warehouse Amazon Redshift, and how it was used to design a data analysis system for Laserfiche. Laserfiche is a software company that provides each …

Bikei Cohomology And Counting Invariants, Jake L. Rosenfield Jan 2016

Bikei Cohomology And Counting Invariants, Jake L. Rosenfield

CMC Senior Theses

This paper gives a brief introduction into the fundaments of knot theory: introducing knot diagrams, knot invariants, and two techniques to determine whether or not two knots are ambient isotopic. After discussing the basics of knot theory an algebraic coloring of knots knows as a bikei is introduced. The algebraic structure as well as the various axioms that define a bikei are defined. Furthermore, an extension between the Alexander polynomial of a knot and the Alexander Bikei is made. The remainder of the paper is devoted to reintroducing a modified homology and cohomology theory for involutory biquandles known as bikei, …

Best Approximations, Lethargy Theorems And Smoothness, Caleb Case Jan 2016

Best Approximations, Lethargy Theorems And Smoothness, Caleb Case

CMC Senior Theses

In this paper we consider sequences of best approximation. We first examine the rho best approximation function and its applications, through an example in approximation theory and two new examples in calculating n-widths. We then further discuss approximation theory by examining a modern proof of Weierstrass's Theorem using Dirac sequences, and providing a new proof of Chebyshev's Equioscillation Theorem, inspired by the de La Vallee Poussin Theorem. Finally, we examine the limits of approximation theorem by looking at Bernstein Lethargy theorem, and a modern generalization to infinite-dimensional subspaces. We all note that smooth functions are bounded by Jackson's Inequalities, but …

Metrics Dashboard Services: A Framework For Analyzing Free/Open Source Team Repositories, Fnu Shilpika Jan 2016

Metrics Dashboard Services: A Framework For Analyzing Free/Open Source Team Repositories, Fnu Shilpika

Master's Theses

Software engineering as practiced today (especially in the industry) is no longer about the stereotypical monolithic life cycle processes (e.g. waterfall, spiral, etc.) found in most software engineering textbooks. These heavyweight methods historically have impeded progress for small/medium sized development teams owing to their inherent complexity and rather limited data collection strategies that predominated the 1980s until relatively recently in the mid-2000s. The discipline and practice of software engineering includes software quality, which has an established theoretical foundation for doing software metrics. Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable …

Activity Recognition For Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Subjects Using Hidden Markov Models, Pichleap Sok Jan 2016

Activity Recognition For Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Subjects Using Hidden Markov Models, Pichleap Sok

Master's Theses

Successful activity recognition in patients with motor disabilities can improve patient care by providing researchers and clinicians with valuable information on patient movements and quality of life in real-world settings. Understanding the everyday activities of patients is important for rehabilitation. For researchers, having convenient, objective, and continuous data can drastically improve outcome measures to better compare therapies, and ultimately make recommendations. For clinicians, individual assessment of compliance and outcomes outside the clinic can be more objective, permitting much more tailored recommendations to patients. Most importantly, for individual patients, activity recognition can make this improved health care possible by simply having …

Prediction Of Metal Remobilization From Sediments Under Various Physical/ Chemical Conditions “Design Of Experiments Cd, Co And Pb”, Eid A. Alkhatib, Trey Chabot, Danielle Grunzke

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

The metal partition coefficient Kd (L/kg) is the ratio of sorbed metal concentration on the solid phase m (mg/kg) to the dissolved metal concentration at equilibrium. The behavior of metals in surface water is complex and their partition coefficients can be impacted by many factors. Organic matter (OM) content in sediments, pH and salinity, are factors that may influence speciation and partitioning of metals. In this study, the partitioning coefficient of three metals (Cd, Co and Pb) under different levels of salinity, pH, and OM content were examined. A series of factorial experiments were evaluated in which three levels of …

Enhancement Of Margrave Deconvolution And Q Estimation In Highly Attenuating Media Using The Modified S-Transform, Adnan Djeffal Jan 2016

Enhancement Of Margrave Deconvolution And Q Estimation In Highly Attenuating Media Using The Modified S-Transform, Adnan Djeffal

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We evaluate the performance of the Margrave deconvolution and spectral ratio methods using the Gabor, S-, and modified S transforms in highly attenuating media, where the quality factor changes with depth dramatically. Our results substantiate that the modified S-transform deconvolution is more robust in terms of generating fewer artifacts and providing better estimates of reflectivities than the Gabor transform. The results also show that using the modified S-transform in the spectral ratio method produces better Q estimates than the S-transform and the Fourier transform that is conventionally used in the spectral ratio method. This improvement in the estimates of reflectivities …

Reservoir Characterization Through Pre-Stack Seismic Analysis And Inversion In The Thrace Basin, Northwest Turkey, Emre Doguturk

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study analyzes hydrocarbon reservoirs by using Amplitude-Versus-Offset (AVO) analysis and different inversion methods to investigate hydrocarbon reservoir in the Thrace Basin which is located in northwest Turkey.

A 3D seismic survey containing prestack data was provided by Turkish Petroleum Corporation as true amplitude NMO corrected 3D gathers.

The quality of this land data was poor for AVO applications, and steps were taken to make it useful. Radon filtering proved to be extremely useful for this purpose. Although application of this filter affected the AVO characteristics differently depending on the parameters selected for the filter, relative AVO characteristics remained useful …

Communication Patterns And Strategies In Software Development Communities Of Practice, Shreya Kumar Jan 2016

Communication Patterns And Strategies In Software Development Communities Of Practice, Shreya Kumar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Some of the greatest challenges in the relatively new field of software development lie in the decidedly old technology of communication between humans. Software projects require sophisticated and varied communication skills because software developers work in a world of incomplete, imperfect information where teams evolve rapidly in response to evolving requirements and changing collaborators. While prescriptive models for software process such as Agile suggest ways of doing, in reality these codified practices must adapt to the complexities of a real workplace. Patterns, rather than rules of behavior within software process are more suitable to the varied and mutable nature of …

Comparison Of Different Seismic Filtering Techniques On Prestack Inversion For Penobscot Area-Nova Scotia, Omer Emre Uygun

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The goal of this study is to compare three different type of seismic filtering according to their inversion results and their quality of data improvements. To do this bandpass filter, Inverse Q, and Radon transform are applied to the original NMO corrected pre-stack data from Nova-Scotia offshore Canada.

The seismic data used was provided as pre-stack data of generally good quality. The test for quality of data improvement comes from the results of inversion based on different types of filtering performed on the pre-stack gathers.

Bandpass filter, Inverse Q, and Radon transform are applied to the migrated prestack data, over …

Reservoir Estimation In The Penobscot 3d Seismic Volume Using Constrained Sparse Spike Inversion, Offshore Nova Scotia, Canada, Mengchu Xiao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Penobscot study area is located offshore Nova Scotia, Canada. There are two wells, which penetrate the highest potentially commercial bodies in the Abenaki Formation. In order to investigate the potential for locating additional hydrocarbon reservoirs, well log data was used and the Penobscot 3D seismic dataset was analyzed using Constrained Sparse Spike Inversion. From the well log data, low GR and SP values are an indication of a permeable sand layer, which provides the target zone in this study. Impedance – porosity crossplots gave the relationship between impedance and porosity, where a low impedance sand layer is correlated with …

Calculating Liquefaction Potential Of Northern Mississippi Using Shear Wave Data, Peshani Herath Jan 2016

Calculating Liquefaction Potential Of Northern Mississippi Using Shear Wave Data, Peshani Herath

Honors Theses

The potential for liquefaction can be determined using the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI). The LPI takes into account the thickness of the liquefiable layers and the factors of safety with respect to depth. This study creates a hybrid method for determining the LPI for different locations in Northern Mississippi. It calculates an average CSR for the region using existing borehole information. The CRR is then calculated using shear wave velocity profile data from a MASW survey. The LPI obtained from this process is compared to LPI values calculated using CPT data and borehole shear wave data. Surface shear wave velocity …

Rhenium-Pyridyl-Nhcs For Photocatalytic Co2 Reduction, Emily Anne Sharpe Jan 2016

Rhenium-Pyridyl-Nhcs For Photocatalytic Co2 Reduction, Emily Anne Sharpe

Honors Theses

The ability to transform CO2 into a useable fuel source would have a remarkably positive impact on the environment by taking the vast amounts of previous unusable CO2 from the atmosphere and reducing it to CO, which can then be turned into fuel. This project involves the synthesis and testing of air and water stable Re (I) pyridyl N- heterocyclic carbene (NHC) compounds for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into CO using a simulated solar spectrum. Previous research in this area focused on the use of Re(bpy)CO3X, which quickly became the benchmark of homogeneous CO2 reduction photocatalysts. The Re (I) pyridyl …

Unprecedented Ractivity Of 1-Aza-2-Azoniaallene Salts: New Methodologies And Mechanistic Studies For The Formation Of Diazenium Salts And Tetrahydropyridazines, Nezar Al-Bataineh

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes the research conducted towards the overall goal of developing new synthetic organic methods to facilitate the synthesis of structurally complex nitrogen-containing polycyclic compounds. More specifically, I will describe the diverse reactivity of 1-aza-2-azoniaallene systems to make polycyclic diazenium salts and tetrahydropyridazine rings. I will also describe mechanistic studies undertaken to better understand this reactivity.

The Brewer research group has discovered that hydrazones undergo an oxidation reaction with chlorodimethylsulfonium chloride to afford -chloroazo compounds, which react intramolecularly with pendent alkene units to give bicyclic ring fused and bridged diazenium salts. My work includes a mechanistic study to understand …

The Relationship Between Magmatism And Deformation During The Acadian Orogeny: A Case Study From Eastern-Central Vermont, Samuel William Lagor Jan 2016

The Relationship Between Magmatism And Deformation During The Acadian Orogeny: A Case Study From Eastern-Central Vermont, Samuel William Lagor

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The Silurian-Devonian metasedimentary rocks of the Connecticut Valley-Gaspé trough (CVGT) were subjected to multiple deformational and metamorphic events during the Acadian orogeny in the Middle-Late Devonian. Plutons intruding the Devonian Waits River and Gile Mountain Formations have been considered post-tectonic, but microstructural studies of the intrusions and their metamorphic aureoles indicate some of these plutons intruded syntectonically. This study investigates the relationship between Acadian deformation and intrusion of the Knox Mountain pluton (KMP) of central Vermont. Structural and geochronological data were collected along a c. 15 km transect from the western limit of the CVGT, where the unconformable Richardson Memorial …

Earthworms In Vermont Forest Soils: A Study Of Nutrient, Carbon, Nitrogen And Native Plant Responses, Ryan Melnichuk Jan 2016

Earthworms In Vermont Forest Soils: A Study Of Nutrient, Carbon, Nitrogen And Native Plant Responses, Ryan Melnichuk

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Anthropogenic activities surrounding horticulture, agriculture and recreation have increased dispersal of invasive earthworms. The introduction of earthworms initiates many physical and chemical alterations in forest soils previously unoccupied by earthworms. Three trials were performed to assess the effects of earthworms on soil-water dynamics, C and N and defensive/storage compound production by a native plant.

The first trial was a greenhouse experiment, performed to assess the impact of two ecologically contrasting invasive earthworm species on percolate and evaporative soil water loss. Mesocosms were constructed to simulate a typical forest Entisol commonly penetrated by the species of interest, Lumbricus terrestris and Amynthas …

Polarization Charge Density In Strained Graphene, Noah Wilson Jan 2016

Polarization Charge Density In Strained Graphene, Noah Wilson

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Graphene, the world's first truly two-dimensional material, is unique for having an electronic structure described by an effective Lorentz invariant theory. One important consequence is that the ratio or Coulomb energy to kinetic energy is a constant, depending only on conditions within the lattice rather than on the average charge density as in a typical Galilean invariant material. Given this unusual property, a natural question would be how do phenomena, such as screening of a Coulomb impurity, happen in graphene? Moreover, how does the addition of uniaxial strain enhance or diminish this behavior? Here I discuss our work to calculate …

Comparing Meteoric 10be, In Situ 10be, And Native 9be Across A Diverse Set Of Watersheds, Emily Sophie Greene Jan 2016

Comparing Meteoric 10be, In Situ 10be, And Native 9be Across A Diverse Set Of Watersheds, Emily Sophie Greene

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The cosmogenic nuclide 10Be is a tool for quantifying earth surface processes that occur on millennial timescales. 10Be is produced in the atmosphere (meteoric 10Be) or in mineral grains (in situ 10Be). Well-understood nuclear physics, physical mixing processes, and the denudation of regolith control concentrations of in situ 10Be; in contrast, a combination of geomorphic, pedogenic, geochemical, and biological processes influence meteoric 10Be concentrations. Some have hypothesized that meteoric 10Be can be used as a tracer of sediment movement if meteoric 10Be is normalized against the concentration of native 9Be in grain coatings. This study aims to better understand Be …

Establishing Chemical Mechanisms And Estimating Phase State Of Secondary Organic Aerosol From Atmospherically Relevant Organic Precursors, Shashank Jain

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Organic aerosol (OA) is a ubiquitous component of atmospheric particulate that influences both human health and global climate. A large fraction of OA is secondary in nature (SOA), being produced by oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by biogenic and anthropogenic sources. Despite the integral role of SOA in atmospheric processes, there remains a limited scientific understanding of the chemical and physical changes induced in SOA as it ages in the atmosphere. This thesis describes work done to increase the knowledge of processes and properties of atmospherically relevant SOA.

In the work presented in this thesis, I have worked …

Homology Modeling And Molecular Docking Of Antagonists To Class B G-Protein Coupled Receptor Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Type 1 (Pac1r), Suzanne Louise Stanton

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Recent studies have identified the Class B g-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide type 1 (PAC1R) as a key component in physiological stress management. Over-activity of neurological stress response systems due to prolonged or extreme exposure to traumatic events has led researchers to investigate PAC1R inhibition as a possible treatment for anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In 2008, Beebe and coworkers identified two such small molecule hydrazide antagonists and a general pharmacaphore for PAC1R inhibition. However, a relative dearth of information about Class B GPCRs in general, and PAC1R in specific, has significantly hindered …

Nanocrystalline WO3 can absorb visible light to catalyze heterogeneous photooxidation reactions. Also, the acidity of the WO3 surface makes this oxide a good thermal catalyst in the dehydration of alcohols to various industrially relevant chemicals. This dissertation explores the photocatalytic and thermal catalytic reactivity of nanocrystalline porous WO3 microparticles. Furthermore, investigations into the changes in WO3 reactivity are carried out after modifying the porous WO3 particles with gold …

Second Coordination Sphere Of Heme In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Mhud, And The Mechanism Of Heme Degradation, Amanda Graves Jan 2016

Second Coordination Sphere Of Heme In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Mhud, And The Mechanism Of Heme Degradation, Amanda Graves

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

MhuD is a heme degrading enzyme from Mycobacterium tuberculosis that catalyzes both monooxygenation and dioxygenation leading to novel chromophores, mycobilins. The X-ray crystal structure of heme-bound, cyanide-inhibited MhuD displays a ruffled heme substrate where pyrrole rings are rotated around the Fe-N bonds, distorting the heme. The electronic structure of the heme in heme-bound, cyanide-inhibited MhuD (MhuD-heme-CN) is characterized here to provide insight into the mechanism of heme degradation by MhuD. Analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) data for MhuD-heme-CN leads to the conclusion that the ground, (dxz,yz)4(dxy)1 electron configuration (2B2g state) and excited (dxy)2(dxz,yz)3 electron …

Given the increasing deployments of Cloud datacentres and the excessive usage of server resources, their associated energy and environmental implications are also increasing at an alarming rate. Cloud service providers are under immense pressure to significantly reduce both such implications for promoting green computing. Maintaining the desired level of Quality of Service (QoS) without violating the Service Level Agreement (SLA), whilst attempting to reduce the usage of the datacentre resources is an obvious challenge for the Cloud service providers. Scaling the level of active server resources in accordance with the predicted incoming workloads is one possible way of reducing the …

Behaviorism Is Not Enough: Better Recommendations Through Listening To Users, Michael D. Ekstrand, Martijn C. Willemsen Jan 2016

Behaviorism Is Not Enough: Better Recommendations Through Listening To Users, Michael D. Ekstrand, Martijn C. Willemsen

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Behaviorism is the currently-dominant paradigm for building and evaluating recommender systems. Both the operation and the evaluation of recommender system applications are most often driven by analyzing the behavior of users. In this paper, we argue that listening to what users say — about the items and recommendations they like, the control they wish to exert on the output, and the ways in which they perceive the system — and not just observing what they do will enable important developments in the future of recommender systems. We provide both philosophical and pragmatic motivations for this idea, describe the various points …

Exposing opportunities for parallelization while explicitly managing data locality is the primary challenge to porting and optimizing existing computational science simulation codes to improve performance and accuracy. OpenMP provides many mechanisms for expressing parallelism, but it primarily remains the programmer’s responsibility to group computations to improve data locality. The loopchain abstraction, where data access patterns are included with the specification of parallel loops, provides compilers with sufficient information to automate the parallelism versus data locality tradeoff. In this paper, we present a loop chain pragma and an extension to the omp for to enable the specification of loop chains and …
