Spatial Variability Of Subsurface Soil Conditions Causing Roadway Settlements, Ömer Bilgin, Kevin Arens, Mark Salveter, Alexander Dettloff Oct 2015

Spatial Variability Of Subsurface Soil Conditions Causing Roadway Settlements, Ömer Bilgin, Kevin Arens, Mark Salveter, Alexander Dettloff

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

Settlement of problematic soils constituting the roadway subgrade may result in pavement distress and structural failure, requiring periodic pavement patching and resurfacing. Many of these problems occur as a result of the settlement of soft cohesive and organic soils. Due to the extent of roadway projects and the limited frequency of boring locations, spatial variability of subsurface soil conditions, and sometimes due to an inadequate extent of exploration, these problematic soils may not be identified suitably during subsurface explorations. An extensive subsurface exploration program was implemented for detailed characterization of subsurface conditions for a relatively short section of an existing …

During his illustrious lifetime, Rabindranath Tagore travelled extensively around the world, spreading inspiration and gaining veneration in most destinations as the emissary of the East and of a deeply futuristic Universalist philosophy. An assessment of the intellectuals and cultural icons of the world whom Tagore encountered, interacted with, and influenced, is both astonishing and indeed still waiting to be adequately evaluated. His exchanges with Einstein, Wells, Rolland, Gide, Freud, Durant, Yeats, Rothenstein, Andrews, Noguchi, Gandhi, Radhakrishnan, Nehru, Bose and numerous others are well-documented. Tagore's literary works and public life centered on rejoicing in and celebrating everything unique and artistic in …

Change The Game, John S. Farnsworth Oct 2015

Change The Game, John S. Farnsworth

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Not only was it a wild idea, it was someone else’s wild idea.

Having spent the three previous summers working feverishly on a book, I’d decided that I was due for a more restful interlude between spring and fall quarters. My summer was to be heavy on contemplation as I scratched together a prospectus for a new book. There was to be ample time for grant writing. In my spare time I would work on a sabbatical proposal. There was the pile of books I was eager to get to, heavy on obscure nature writers.

Then came an email from …

Can The Wave Function In Configuration Space Be Replaced By Single-Particle Wave Functions In Physical Space?, Travis Norsen, Damiano Marian, Xavier Oriols Oct 2015

Can The Wave Function In Configuration Space Be Replaced By Single-Particle Wave Functions In Physical Space?, Travis Norsen, Damiano Marian, Xavier Oriols

Physics: Faculty Publications

The ontology of Bohmian mechanics includes both the universal wave function (living in 3N-dimensional configuration space) and particles (living in ordinary 3-dimensional physical space). Proposals for understanding the physical significance of the wave function in this theory have included the idea of regarding it as a physically-real field in its 3N-dimensional space, as well as the idea of regarding it as a law of nature. Here we introduce and explore a third possibility in which the configuration space wave function is simply eliminated – replaced by a set of single-particle pilot-wave fields living in ordinary physical space. Such a re-formulation …

Long-Term Manure Amendments Reduced Soil Aggregate Stability Via Redistribution Of The Glomalin-Related Soil Protein In Macroaggregates, Hongtu Xie, Jianwei Li, Bin Zhang, Lianfeng Wang, Jingkuan Wang, Hongbo He, Xudong Zhang Oct 2015

Long-Term Manure Amendments Reduced Soil Aggregate Stability Via Redistribution Of The Glomalin-Related Soil Protein In Macroaggregates, Hongtu Xie, Jianwei Li, Bin Zhang, Lianfeng Wang, Jingkuan Wang, Hongbo He, Xudong Zhang

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) contributes to the formation and maintenance of soil aggregates, it is however remains unclear whether long-term intensive manure amendments alter soil aggregates stability and whether GRSP regulates these changes. Based on a three-decade long fertilization experiment in northeast China, this study examined the impact of long-term manure input on soil organic carbon (SOC), total and easily extractable GRSP (GRSPt and GRSPe) and their respective allocations in four soil aggregates (>2000 μm; 2000–250 μm; 250–53 μm; and <53 μm). The treatments include no fertilization (CK), low and high manure amendment (M1, M2), chemical nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) and combined manure and chemical fertilizers (NPKM1, NPKM2). Though SOC, GRSPe and GRSPt in soil and SOC in each aggregate generally increased with increasing manure input, GRSPt and GRSPe in each aggregate showed varying changes with manure input. Both GRSP in macroaggregates (2000–250 μm) were significantly higher under low manure input, a pattern consistent with changes in soil aggregate stability. Constituting 38~49% of soil mass, macroaggregates likely contributed to the nonlinear changes of aggregate stability under manure amendments. The regulatory process of GRSP allocations in soil aggregates has important implications for manure management under intensive agriculture.

Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy Imaging Of Microtubule Arrays In Intact Arabidopsis Thaliana Seedling Roots, Bin Dong, Xiaochen Yang, Shaobin Zhu, Diane C. Bassham, Ning Fang

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy has generated tremendous success in revealing detailed subcellular structures in animal cells. However, its application to plant cell biology remains extremely limited due to numerous technical challenges, including the generally high fluorescence background of plant cells and the presence of the cell wall. In the current study, stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) imaging of intact Arabidopsis thaliana seedling roots with a spatial resolution of 20–40 nm was demonstrated. Using the super-resolution images, the spatial organization of cortical microtubules in different parts of a whole Arabidopsis root tip was analyzed quantitatively, and the results show the dramatic differences …

Biostatistics Presentations

Growing scientific evidence suggests that intricate interactions of genetic risk factors with environmental exposures play a major role in the development of chronic pain conditions. In studies of relative contribution of an individual’s genetic composition to the perception of pain, the general characteristics of pain sensitivity are typically measured by a wide range of different, yet possibly etiologically related pain phenotypes. Testing each of these pain-perception traits individually is subject to problems of multiple testing and low statistical power. Furthermore, pain-related traits may share common etiology and comprise binary, categorical, and quantitative measurements. In the current study, we propose a …

Directional Recurrence For Infinite Measure Preserving Zᵈ Actions, Aimee S.A. Johnson, A. A. Şahin Oct 2015

Directional Recurrence For Infinite Measure Preserving Zᵈ Actions, Aimee S.A. Johnson, A. A. Şahin

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We define directional recurrence for infinite measure preserving Zd actions both intrinsically and via the unit suspension flow and prove that the two definitions are equivalent. We study the structure of the set of recurrent directions and show it is always a Gδ set. We construct an example of a recurrent action with no recurrent directions, answering a question posed in a 2007 paper of Daniel J. Rudolph. We also show by example that it is possible for a recurrent action to not be recurrent in an irrational direction even if all its sub-actions are recurrent.
