Wavelength Detection From Filtered Photodiodes, Nils Otterstrom, Dallin Durfee
Wavelength Detection From Filtered Photodiodes, Nils Otterstrom, Dallin Durfee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction Physics laboratories all over the world depend on accurate wavelength meters to tune their lasers to desired optical frequencies. Our ion interferometry lab, for example, relies heavily on the precision of these instruments to laser cool beams of strontium ions and then split and recombine their wave functions. Unfortunately, some these devices can be extremely expensive and very cumbersome to use. A frequency comb wavelength detector, although remarkably accurate, can cost around $100,000 dollars. In our lab we employ a Michelson-Morley interferometer based wavelength meter, which costs around $8,000 dollars. Despite its relatively high accuracy, the device is extremely …

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the predominant histological type of lung cancer, accounting for up to 85% of cases. Disease stage is commonly used to determine adjuvant treatment eligibility of NSCLC patients, however, it is an imprecise predictor of the prognosis of an individual patient. Currently, many researchers resort to microarray technology for identifying relevant genetic prognostic markers, with particular attention on trimming or extending a Cox regression model. Adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are two major histology subtypes of NSCLC. It has been demonstrated that fundamental differences exist in their underlying mechanisms, which motivated us …

Population substructure is a well-known confounder in population-based case-control genetic studies, but its impact in family-based studies is unclear. We performed population substructure analysis using extended families of admixed population to evaluate power and Type I error in an association study framework. Our analysis shows that power was improved by 1.5% after principal components adjustment. Type I error was also reduced by 2.2% after adjusting for family substratification. The presence of population substructure was underscored by discriminant analysis, in which over 92% of individuals were correctly assigned to their actual family using only 100 principal components. This study demonstrates the …

Extent And Mechanism Of Translational Readthrough In Humans, Michael Porter, Dr. John Prince
Extent And Mechanism Of Translational Readthrough In Humans, Michael Porter, Dr. John Prince
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction Proteins are an integral part of the cell. They are responsible for metabolism, DNA replication, transportation, and responding to changes in environment. Because of their importance to the cell, proteins are often drug targets due to the important roles they play in carrying out cellular function. Proteins are made by ribosomes which are responsible for translating proteins from mRNA. The end of translation is signaled by a stop codon in the RNA. However, in some organisms such as viruses and yeast, the stop codon may be bypassed in an event known as translational readthrough.

Determining Thin Film Roughness With Euv Reflection, Cody Petrie, Steven Turley
Determining Thin Film Roughness With Euv Reflection, Cody Petrie, Steven Turley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction: Reflection of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light is made difficult by a number of factors. First, most materials have a large, imaginary part of the index of refraction for EUV light, causing absorption. As a result, our experiment is done under vacuum. Second, since the wavelength of EUV light (1-100 nm) is smaller than visible light, it is scattered more strongly than visible light. To overcome this obstacle we need to make our reflecting surfaces smoother. To be able to do this we need a good probe for surface roughness on the scale of EUV wavelengths. Currently the best method …
Porous Cantilevers As Chemical Sensors, Steven Noyce, Robert Davis
Porous Cantilevers As Chemical Sensors, Steven Noyce, Robert Davis
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Resonant cantilevers, or small vibrating beams, are used to detect small concentrations of chemicals. As molecules or atoms of the substance to be sensed adhere to the vibrating beam, the resonant frequency changes as a result of the change in mass. These sensors are built on the microscale to allow for mass parallelization. An array of cantilevers could each be coated with a different adhesion layer, making each beam sensitive to a unique substance. These sensors have previously been made of solid materials, but because the sensitivity is proportional to the surface area of the resonator, a porous cantilever could …

Dc Electrical Conductivity Retention And Electrical Compensation Of Polyaniline By Tio2 At Higher Loading Percentages In Polyaniline@Tio2 Nanocomposites, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. O. Ansari, S. A. Ansari, M. H. Cho
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
Electrically conductive HCl-doped polyaniline Pani)@titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposites were prepared by the in-situ oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of different amounts of TiO2 nanoparticles. The synthesized Pani@TiO2 nanocomposites were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The stability of the Pani@TiO2 nanocomposites in terms of their electrical conductivity retention was examined under isothermal and cyclic aging conditions, and compared with that of pure Pani. The Pani@TiO2 nanocomposites showed higher thermal stability than pure Pani. The effect of competitive doping/de-doping by TiO2 was examined at different Pani to TiO2 weight ratios. TiO2 at a …

Challenges Associated With Space Weather Analysis And Prediction, John Lanicci
John M Lanicci
The term “space weather” is typically used to describe environmental conditions in the region extending from the sun’s surface, through the interplanetary medium, to the earth’s magnetic field and upper atmosphere, with a focus on those conditions that can affect the earth, its technological systems, and population. Space weather conditions are monitored continuously by a number of agencies around the world. These agencies use both satellite- and ground-based measurements to build analyses and employ predictive models that form the basis for impacts-based products dealing with myriad users in satellite operations, the utility industry, aviation, and satellite-based communications, to name a …

Extreme Rainfall Frequencies Over The Kennedy Space Center Complex, Adam Schnapp, John Lanicci
John M Lanicci
A study of extreme rainfall frequencies over the NASA Kennedy Space Center complex was accomplished using a high-density rainfall dataset from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission’s observational network archive. Data from the network were gridded and analyzed to produce rainfall accumulation estimates for various return periods over the complex ranging from 1 to 100 years. Results of the analysis show that the rainfall accumulations for the 100-year return period are typically around 315 mm and 433 mm for 24-hour and 72-hour durations, respectively. These 100-year event estimates are consistent with those calculated from a longer-period archive at Titusville. Because the …

Exoplanetary systems closest to the Sun, with the brightest host stars, provide the most favorable opportunities for characterization studies of the host star and their planet(s). The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey uses both new radial velocity (RV) measurements and photometry in order to greatly improve planetary orbit uncertainties and the fundamental properties of the star, in this case HD 130322. The only companion, HD 130322b, orbits in a relatively circular orbit, e = 0.029 every ∼10.7 days. We have compiled RV measurements from multiple sources, including 12 unpublished from the Keck I telescope, over the course of ∼14 …
Hyperbolic Resonances Of Metasurface Cavities, David Keene, Maxim Durach
Hyperbolic Resonances Of Metasurface Cavities, David Keene, Maxim Durach
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We propose a new class of optical resonator structures featuring one or two metasurface reflectors or metacavities and predict that such resonators support novel hyperbolic resonances. As an example of such resonances we introduce hyperbolic Tamm plasmons (HTPs) and hyperbolic Fabry-Perot resonances (HFPs). The hyperbolic optical modes feature low-loss incident power re-distribution over TM and TE polarization output channels, clover-leaf anisotropic dispersion, and other unique properties which are tunable and are useful for multiple applications.

Violating The Modified Helstrom Bound With Nonprojective Measurements, Justin Dressel, Todd A. Brun, Alexander N. Korotkov
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We consider the discrimination of two pure quantum states with three allowed outcomes: a correct guess, an incorrect guess, and a nonguess. To find an optimum measurement procedure, we define a tunable cost that penalizes the incorrect guess and nonguess outcomes. Minimizing this cost over all projective measurements produces a rigorous cost bound that includes the usual Helstrom discrimination bound as a special case.We then show that nonprojective measurements can outperform this modified Helstrom bound for certain choices of cost function. The Ivanovic-Dieks-Peres unambiguous state discrimination protocol is recovered as a special case of this improvement.Notably, while the cost advantage …
Determination Of Lie Superalgebras Of Supersymmetries Of Super Differential Equations, Xuan Liu
Determination Of Lie Superalgebras Of Supersymmetries Of Super Differential Equations, Xuan Liu
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Superspaces are an extension of classical spaces that include certain (non-commutative) supervariables. Super differential equations are differential equations defined on superspaces, which arise in certain popular mathematical physics models. Supersymmetries of such models are superspace transformations which leave their sets of solutions invariant. They are important generalization of classical Lie symmetry groups of differential equations.
In this thesis, we consider finite-dimensional Lie supersymmetry groups of super differential equations. Such supergroups are locally uniquely determined by their associated Lie superalgebras, and in particular by the structure constants of those algebras. The main work of this thesis is providing an algorithmic method …

The generalized formula are applicable on any uniform polyhedron having 2n congruent right kite faces, 4n edges & 2n+2 vertices lying on a spherical surface with a certain radius. These formula have been derived by the author Mr H.C. Rajpoot to analyse infinite no. of the uniform polyhedrons having congruent right kite faces simply by setting n=3,4,5,6,7,………………upto infinity, to calculate all the important parameters such as ratio of unequal edges, outer radius, inner radius, mean radius, surface area, volume, solid angles subtended by the polyhedron at its vertices, dihedral angles between the adjacent right kite faces etc. These formula are …

BACKGROUND: To date limited information regarding outcome-modifying factors in patients with acute intracranial large artery occlusion (ILAO) in the anterior circulation is available. Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a common finding among patients with ischemic stroke and has been associated with poor post-stroke outcomes but its association with ILAO remains poorly characterized. This study sought to clarify the contribution of baseline LA and other common risk factors to 90-day outcome (modified Rankin Scale, mRS) after stroke due to acute anterior circulation ILAO. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1,153 consecutive patients with imaging-confirmed ischemic stroke during a 4-year period (2007-2010) at a single academic …

Measuring The Hyperfine Splittings Of Lowest Energy Atomic Transitions In Rubidium, Benjamin D. Graber
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The goal of this experiment was to measure the hyperfine energy splittings of the ground to first excited state transitions in rubidium using saturated absorption spectroscopy. Using this technique, we measured these transition energy spectra by taking the difference of two photodiode outputs due to multiple beams of a single laser scanned over a range of frequencies and shone through a cell of Rb vapor. When the laser frequency was resonant with an atomic transition, photons of those frequencies were absorbed, leaving a dip in intensity of the beam measured at the photodiode. One of the two laser beams had …

Zno/Ag/Mn2o3 Nanocomposite For Visible Lightinduced Industrial Textile Effluent Degradation, Uric Acid And Ascorbic Acid Sensing And Antimicrobial Activity, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
A facile and inexpensive route has been developed to synthesize a ternary ZnO/Ag/Mn2O3 nanocomposite having nanorod structures based on the thermal decomposition method. The as-synthesized ternary ZnO/Ag/Mn2O3 nanocomposite was characterized and used for visible light-induced photocatalytic, sensing and antimicrobial studies. The ternary ZnO/Ag/Mn2O3 nanocomposite exhibited excellent and enhanced visible light-induced photocatalytic degradation of industrial textile effluent (real sample analysis) compared to pure ZnO. Sensing studies showed that the ternary ZnO/Ag/Mn2O3 nanocomposite exhibited outstanding and improved detection of uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). It also showed effective and efficient bactericidal activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. These results …

The Ptolemaic System: A Detailed Synopsis, John Cramer Dr.
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Ptolemaic System, constructed by Claudius Ptolemeus (the Latin form of his name), was the most influential of all Earth centered cosmological systems. His ingenious and creative work is primarily recorded in his book The Mathematical Systematic Treatise which the Arabs characterized as “the greatest” and, in so doing, gave the book its most used name, Almagest.

Dissatisfied with the problems of the geocentric system inherited from Claudius Ptolemy, Nicholas Copernicus began the change from geocentrism to heliocentrism. His eponymous system was expounded first in the Commentariolus (written about 1508 and circulated privately in manuscript form) and then more fully and finally in his book, De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Orbs) published as he lay dying in 1543.
The Kerzman–Stein Operator For Piecewise Continuously Differentiable Regions, Michael Bolt, Andrew Raich
The Kerzman–Stein Operator For Piecewise Continuously Differentiable Regions, Michael Bolt, Andrew Raich
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The Kerzman–Stein operator is the skew-hermitian part of the Cauchy operator defined with respect to an unweighted hermitian inner product on a rectifiable curve. If the curve is continuously differentiable, the Kerzman–Stein operator is compact on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions; when there is a corner, the operator is noncompact. Here, we give a complete description of the spectrum for a finite symmetric wedge and we show how this reveals the essential spectrum for curves that are piecewise continuously differentiable. We also give an explicit construction for a smooth curve whose Kerzman–Stein operator has large norm.

We report the first in vitro enzymatic synthesis of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic nanoparticles toward magnetic ELISA reporting. With our procedure, alkaline phosphatase catalyzes the dephosphorylation of L-ascorbic-2-phosphate, which then serves as a reducing agent for salts of iron, gadolinium, and holmium, forming magnetic precipitates of Fe45±14Gd5±2O50±15 and Fe42±4Ho6±4O52±5. The nanoparticles were found to be paramagnetic at 300 K and antiferromagnetic under 25 K. Although weakly magnetic at 300 K, the room-temperature magnetization of the nanoparticles found here is considerably greater than that of analogous chemically-synthesized LnxFeyOz (Ln = Gd, Ho) samples reported previously. At 5 K, the nanoparticles showed a …
