The Impact Of Stegastes Planifrons On The Resurgence Of Acropora Cervicornis, Zebulon Martin
The Impact Of Stegastes Planifrons On The Resurgence Of Acropora Cervicornis, Zebulon Martin
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
This study examines resurgent patches of Acropora cervicornis in the “Coral Gardens” back-reef area of Ambergris Caye, Belize. The goal of this study was to understand the carbonate budget and ecosystem dynamics of this successful reef, with an emphasis on the role of Stegastes planifrons (the herbivorous threespot damselfish), on the health of the coral. Benthic survey data from photo-quadrats along six transects were supplemented with counts of S. planifrons, their chimney scars, and sea urchin (Echinometra viridis) to assess their impact on the reef. The data indicate a positive correlation between the density of Stegastes …

Mega-Autophagosome Induction By Human Cox-3 And Human Nucleobindin, Gideon N. Logan, Daniel Simmons
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Cyclooxygenase (COX) isoenzymes catalyze the first step of prostanoid synthesis, which plays a role in various conditions including pain, inflammation, arthritis, and cancer. Recently our laboratory has shown that mammalian cell lines transfected with the COX-1 splice variant, COX-3, express translationally recoded proteins, including four unglycosylated lower molecular weight forms, 57kDa (57 rcCOX-3), 50kDa (50 rcCOX-3), 47kDa (47 rcCOX-3) and 44kDa (44 rcCOX-3.)
Mitochondrial Membrane Lipids Regulator In B-Cll Leukemia Research, Brooke Keeton, Dr. John Prince
Mitochondrial Membrane Lipids Regulator In B-Cll Leukemia Research, Brooke Keeton, Dr. John Prince
Journal of Undergraduate Research
B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is the most common type of leukemia in adults.1 Over 75% of patients diagnosed with B-CLL are over the age of 50 years old, and have a median survival between 18 months and 3 years.2 B-CLL originates from a mutation in the DNA of white blood cells, the potent infection fighters of the body. This genetic mutation produces abnormal white blood cells, rendering them nonfunctional and resulting in a weak immune system. While this mutation originally occurs in the bone marrow, it slowly invades other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, liver, and …
Advanced Oxidation Processes Of Problematic Toxin And Water Contaminants: Cylindrospermopsin, Iopamidol, 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol And Propylene Glycol Phenyl Ether, Cen Zhao
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The occurrences of cyanotoxin and organic contaminants threaten drinking water sources and are a serious human health and environmental concern. The control of these problematic contaminants and the remediation of the associated contaminants are critical for ensuring safe drinking water to significant populations. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received considerable attention as a potential water treatment for various pollutants. In this dissertation, advanced oxidative degradation of four problematic water toxic contaminants (CYN, iopamidol, 4-methylcyclohexane methanol and propylene glycol phenyl ether) were studied to develop the fundamental understanding required to assess AOPs as a potential water treatment process.

Bottom-Up Development Of Nanoelectronics Using Dna Origami Templates, John Jensen, Dr. Adam T. Woolley
Bottom-Up Development Of Nanoelectronics Using Dna Origami Templates, John Jensen, Dr. Adam T. Woolley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction DNA origami is the method of folding a large single stranded DNA (ssDNA) with multiple smaller ssDNA “staple” strands into a predesigned shape, making it an attractive option in the bottom-up construction of nanoelectronic components, such as nanowires. These structures can be used as templates for placement of conductive species1, such as gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). In order to attach Au NPs to the structure, polyadenine (polyA) tails are added to ends of certain staple strands, allowing attachment of Au NP “seeds” that are functionalized with a thiolated polythymine (polyT) sequence. After attachment, the Au NP seeds are connected …
Molecular-Level Interactions Responsible For Retention In Liquid Chromatography, Jessica Jenkins, James Patterson
Molecular-Level Interactions Responsible For Retention In Liquid Chromatography, Jessica Jenkins, James Patterson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction In many fields of work, such as medicine or pharmaceutical research, it is necessary to separate chemically similar compounds. Liquid chromatography, which involves a mixture of compounds (analyte) dissolved in a mobile phase flowing through a packed column (stationary phase), is the most widely used chemical separation technique. Changes in operational parameters such as the mobile or stationary phase composition, temperature, pressure, pH, etc. affect retention time Operational parameters are currently chosen by trial-and-error because we understand very little about the molecular interactions between the analyte and the mobile phase/stationary phase interface. Specifically, it is unclear how enthalpy and …
Learning Chemistry Through Experimentation, Brent Kamba `, Dr. Jennifer Nielson
Learning Chemistry Through Experimentation, Brent Kamba `, Dr. Jennifer Nielson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
There is a great need for students to learn scientific skills in Uganda. Very few students pass the national chemistry exams (about 40%) and even fewer go on to study science fields in higher education. The teaching methods in Uganda are a little bit old fashion where students often just learn facts and practise rote memorization. Rarely do they develop the critical and analytical skills to help them succeed in science jobs. Teachers also express that the curriculum is very theoretical, and not experimental.
Differences In Cognitive Processing Between Deaf And Hearing Individuals When Presented With Linguistic Stimuli, Aubrey Hatch, Michael Jones
Differences In Cognitive Processing Between Deaf And Hearing Individuals When Presented With Linguistic Stimuli, Aubrey Hatch, Michael Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project was designed to increase our understanding of the neurological processes of deaf individuals to shape future adaptive technologies to facilitate better education for the deaf community. More specifically, my goal was to focus on the cognitive differences between deaf and hearing individuals when presented with different types of linguistic stimuli such as: a spoken word, a written word, a signed video of a word, or a picture that represents a specific word. By increasing our understanding of these cognitive differences, I hoped to help increase the capabilities of future adaptive technological devices that would be beneficial for those …
Zeros Of Poincare Series Of Level 2, Andrew Haddock, Paul Jenkins
Zeros Of Poincare Series Of Level 2, Andrew Haddock, Paul Jenkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Introduction Poincaré series are a certain type of modular form. Modular forms are complex-valued functions that satisfy certain symmetry properties. There are many different types of modular forms, and one way to classify modular forms is by their level, such as 1, 2, 3, etc. They are of much interest as a research subject because they are connected in surprising ways to many different fields in number theory—e.g., elliptic curves, quadratic forms, and partition functions, to name just a few. As we gain more insight into the various properties of modular forms, we gain more insight into how these various …

Determining Surface Roughness Using Extreme Ultraviolet Light, Joshua Marx, Steve Turley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light is light with wavelengths between one and 60 nanometers. The shorter wavelengths of light in this range are on the same order of magnitude as atomic dimensions. Currently, XUV optics have many uses and even more potential applications in a variety of fields, such as photolithography, plasma diagnostics, and astrophysics.
A Tectonic Origin For Mountains On Saturn’S Moon Titan, Jani Radebaugh
A Tectonic Origin For Mountains On Saturn’S Moon Titan, Jani Radebaugh
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In this proposal, we proposed to: (1) undertake a global study of peak heights and slopes of mountains on Titan to determine the relative importance of tectonism and erosion, and thereby gain a better understanding of the timing of mountain formation and subsequent evolution by erosion. We also proposed to: (2) complete general global and detailed regional structure maps to investigate the orientation of forces required to build the selected mountains. We will investigate the role of liquids in the lithosphere in fault propagation and mountain formation, similar to Critical Wedge Theory, explored extensively on Earth. Finally, we planned to: …

Digital Outcrop Model And Paleoecology Of The Eight-Foot Rapid Algal Field (Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay Sequence), Paradox Basin, Utah, Colton Goodrich, Scott Ritter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although phylloid algal mounds have been studied for 50 year, much remains to be determined concerning the ecology and sedimentology of these Late Paleozoic carbonate buildups. Herein we perform a digital outcrop study of the well-known Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay mound interval in the Paradox Basin because 1) the concept of phylloid algae was established in this interval and 2) outcropping mounds along the San Juan River are cited as outcrop analogs of reservoir carbonates in the Paradox Basin oil province of Utah and adjacent states. The principal field area is the Eight Foot algal field located at river mile …

Quest Toward The Design And Synthesis Of Functional Metal-Organic Materials (Moms): A Supermolecular Building Layer Approach (Sbl), Hasnaa Mouttaki
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metal-Organic Materials (MOMs) represent an important division of coordination chemistry. They are self-assembled through the linking of metals with organic ligands. They gained their spotlight among scientists for their aptitude for design and facile synthesis via their multi-component coordination, and their readiness to functionalization. MOMs have been targeted for specific industrial and environmental applications such as gas storage, catalysis and CO2 sequestration.
Throughout the past decade, studies have been conducted to develop systematic approaches toward the design and synthesis of functional MOMs. Their synthesis from targeted building units has facilitated their rational design and functionalization. The Molecular Building Block …
Methods And Results Toward Measuring Magnetic Fields In Star-Forming Regions, Scott C. Jones
Methods And Results Toward Measuring Magnetic Fields In Star-Forming Regions, Scott C. Jones
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Star formation is a fundamental process in the evolution of the cosmos. Yet given the abundance of stellar constituents, it remains prescient as to why the number of stars is not correspondingly large. If we cannot satisfactorily explain how stars are formed, then many further avenues of research are hindered. This thesis makes claims about one of the foremost theories as to the relative lack of stars, interstellar magnetic fields. These fields have been observationally verified on multiple scales. I will use the most direct method to probe magnetic fields in known star-forming regions, polarization, at millimetre/submillimetre wavelengths. In particular …

Relationship Of Surrounding Geology To Well Recovery Properties For Selected Cedarville University Water Supply Wells, Kaitlyn Sturm
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
This study was conducted to ascertain the relationship between geology and recovery rates of three selected Cedarville University water supply wells. In order to determine the recovery rates, the three selected wells were individually pumped down and then water level measurements were taken as the water levels rose in the well bore. The collected field data was analyzed and compared to the drillers’ well logs from when the wells were originally drilled. The geologic conditions that were examined for the area immediately surrounding the wells included: bedrock lithology, glacial drift characteristics (type and thickness), ground-surface topography, and bedrock topography. The …
Determining Provenance Of Glacial Material In Southwestern Ohio, Jorian Krob
Determining Provenance Of Glacial Material In Southwestern Ohio, Jorian Krob
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
During the last glacial maximum, ice moved south from Canada to cover much of the northern United States. This included the northern and western portions of Ohio. As the ice migrated it picked up Canadian bedrock which it transported and then left in Ohio when the ice retreated. The goal of this project was to determine the provenance (the source of origin) of the glacial material that is located in Greene, Clark, Montgomery, Logan, and Champaign Counties in Ohio. To determine where in southern Canada the material in these counties came from, this project included literature review into the glacial …

Derivation Of Correction Coefficients For Stream Velocities, Upper Little Miami River Basin, Oh, Matthew S. Cheney
Derivation Of Correction Coefficients For Stream Velocities, Upper Little Miami River Basin, Oh, Matthew S. Cheney
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
The simplest method of determining stream velocity involves measuring how long it takes a floating object or material to move a certain distance downstream. This study tested a dog toy (mini tennis ball), a 2 inch diameter piece of pumice, a playing card, a full 16.9 oz. water bottle, and milk. The floats were released where the maximum velocity of the stream was found through the use of profiling with a simple flowmeter. The real-time data from a USGS-gaged stream only shows discharge and gage height (stage); it does not show velocity. However, the historic USGS-technician stream-flow-verification data for a …
Buildup And Infill Rates Of Sediment Behind Cedarcliff Falls Dam, Tyler K. Dix
Buildup And Infill Rates Of Sediment Behind Cedarcliff Falls Dam, Tyler K. Dix
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Cedarcliff Falls Dam is a small man-made masonry dam that was constructed around 1869. The dam impounds a pool of water that is a half-mile long on Massie’s Creek near Cedarville, Ohio. This project’s goal was to ascertain the infill rate and character of the sediment that had built up since 1869. The field work involved the measurement of water depth through the length of the pool in order to create a bottom-contour map. In addition, the sediment type was examined throughout the pool. This work was accomplished by use of a boat, stadia rod, handheld GPS unit, and a …
Glacial Till Prospecting In Southwest Ohio: Implications For Improved Sampling, Dylan J. Mckevitt
Glacial Till Prospecting In Southwest Ohio: Implications For Improved Sampling, Dylan J. Mckevitt
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Glacial till (drift) prospecting has served a major role in corporate mineral exploration, especially for gold and diamond during the past 30 years. It involves analyzing heavy indicator minerals from bulk sampling of various glacial deposits in order to track up ice flow direction to the potential orebody (such as a kimberlite pipe or Cu-Ni deposit), a technique commonly used in Canada but not in the U.S. Heavy minerals including diamond, gold, and native copper have been found in Ohio glacial till; the provenance of these heavy minerals is the Precambrian bedrock north of Ohio. This study utilized standard procedures …
Progressive Assessment Of Lake Depths In Cedar Lake, Samuel L. Rice
Progressive Assessment Of Lake Depths In Cedar Lake, Samuel L. Rice
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
In the fall of 2012, the CU Environmental Geology class did an assignment which produced a bathymetry (bottom-contour) map of Cedar Lake. Although the depth measurements using stadia rods and the position measurements using handheld GPS units were somewhat crude, the end result was a map that seemed to be a very reasonable depiction on the lake bottom configuration. In the fall 2014, measurements were again made as a part of an ongoing assessment to determine if sediment infill was occurring in the lake. The data gathering techniques duplicated those used in 2012, including equipment used. The primary difference between …
A Photo-Detachment Study Of Binding Energies Of La-, Lin Pan
A Photo-Detachment Study Of Binding Energies Of La-, Lin Pan
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Among the three candidates for negative ion laser cooling, La- is the most promising due to the strong transitions between its bound states. A direct energy calculation at the valence level [1] had been applied to La-. However, a comparison with the most recent experimental study [2] has shown there exists a range of disagreement of 17 ~ 90 meV in the energy values relative to the ground state. This research is a computational effort to determine the energies using a different method. By reproducing the photo-detachment cross section of La- and then lining it up with the experimental plot, …
