Following our previous discovery of the spectra of the HBX (X = F, Cl, and Br) free radicals [S.-G. He, F. X. Sunahori, and D. J. Clouthier, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 127, 10814 (2005)], the Ã2A″Π-X̃2A' band systems of the HBCl and DBCl free radicals have been studied in detail. The radicals have been prepared in a pulsed electric discharge jet using a precursor mixture of BCl3 and H2 or D2 in high pressure argon. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and single vibronic level emission spectra have been recorded to map out the ground …

We study the indentation of a thin elastic film floating at the surface of a liquid. We focus on the onset of radial wrinkles at a threshold indentation depth and the evolution of the wrinkle pattern as indentation progresses far beyond this threshold. Comparison between experiments on thin polymer films and theoretical calculations shows that the system very quickly reaches the far from threshold regime, in which wrinkles lead to the relaxation of azimuthal compression. Furthermore, when the indentation depth is sufficiently large that the wrinkles cover most of the film, we recognize a novel mechanical response in which the …

Functional Layer-By-Layer Design Of Xerogel-Based 1st Generation Amperometric Glucose Biosensors, Nicholas G. Poulos, Jackson R. Hall, Michael C. Leopold
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Xerogel-based first-generation amperometric glucose biosensors, constructed through specific layer-by-layer assembly of films featuring glucose oxidase doped xerogel, a diffusion-limiting xerogel layer, and capped with both electropolymerized polyphenol and blended polyurethane semipermeable membranes, are presented. The specific combination of xerogels formed from specific silane precursors, including propyl-trimethoxysilane, isobutyl-trimethoxysilane, octyl-trimethoxysilane, and hydroxymethyl-triethoxysilane, exhibit impressive dynamic and linear ranges of detection (e.g., ≥24–28 mM glucose) and low response times, as well as significant discrimination against common interferent species such as acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, sodium nitrite, oxalic acid, and uric acid as determined by selectivity coefficients. Additionally, systematic electrochemical and contact angle studies of …

Processes within the critical zone—spanning groundwater to the top of the vegetation canopy—have important societal relevance and operate over broad spatial and temporal scales that often are not included in existing frameworks for ecosystem services evaluation. Here we expand the scope of ecosystem services by specifying how critical zone processes extend context both spatially and temporally, determine constraints that limit provision of services, and offer a potentially powerful currency for evaluation. Context: A critical zone perspective extends the context of ecosystem services by expressly addressing how the physical structure of the terrestrial Earth surface (e.g., parent material, topography, and orography) …

We study whether the solutions for the symmetric part of the connection in homogeneous biconformal space also satisfy the more general field equation of curved biconformal spaces. We show that the six field equations for the torsion and co-torsion are satisfied by vanishing torsion together with the Lorentzian form of the metric when γ+ = 0.

Exploring Radioisotopic Geochronology And Astrochronology, Stephen R. Meyers, Bradley S. Singer, Mark D. Schmitz
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Numerical dating of the geologic record provides an essential framework for interpreting the rich history of our planet. Common applications include the determination of dates for extinction events and climate reorganizations, the assessment of rates of paleoenvironmental and paleobiologic change, and the correlation of rocks across vast expanses. Such investigations have yielded crucial insight into the mechanisms that shape Earth's surface environments over geologic time. But as geologists increasingly pursue high (spatial) resolution stratigraphic analyses in "deep time," the short temporal scales (<100,000 years) of the processes investigated push the limits of high-precision geochronology.

Best Linear Unbiased Prediction: An Illustration Based On, But Not Limited To, Shelf Life Estimation, Maryna Ptukhina, Walter Stroup
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Shelf life estimation procedures, following ICH guidelines, use multiple batch regression with fixed batch effects. This guidance specifically mandates estimates based on at least 3 batches. Technically, the fixed-batch model limits inference to the batches actually observed, whereas ICH requires resulting estimates to apply to all future batches stored under similar conditions. This creates a conflict between the model used and the inference space the model is intended to address. Quinlan, et al. (2013) and Schwenke (2010) studied the small sample behavior of this procedure. Both studies revealed large sampling variation associated with the ICH procedure, producing a substantial proportion …

Contamination by Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a continuing concern for meat production facility management throughout the United States. Several methods have been used to detect STEC during meat processing, however the excessive experimental cost of determining the optimal method is rarely feasible. The objective of this preliminary simulation study is to determine which sampling method (Cozzini core sampler, core drill shaving, and N-60 surface excision) will better detect STEC at varying levels of contamination present in the meat. 1000 simulated experiments were studied using a binary model for rare occurrences to find the optimal method. We found that …

Differential Methylation Methods In Multi-Context Organisms, Douglas Baumann, Yuqing Su, Iranga Mendis, Gayla R. Olbricht
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that has the ability to alter gene expression without any change in the DNA sequence. DNA methylation occurs when a methyl chemical group attaches to cytosine bases on the DNA sequence. In mammals, DNA methylation primarily occurs at CG sites, when a cytosine is followed by a guanine in the DNA sequence. In plants, DNA methylation can also occur in other cytosine sequences, such as when a cytosine is not followed directly by a guanine. Many of the statistical methods that have been developed to estimate methylation levels and test differential methylation in whole-genome …
On Fixed Effects Estimation In Spline-Based Semiparametric Regression For Spatial Data, Guilherme Ludwig, Jun Zhu, Chun-Shu Chen
On Fixed Effects Estimation In Spline-Based Semiparametric Regression For Spatial Data, Guilherme Ludwig, Jun Zhu, Chun-Shu Chen
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Spline surfaces are often used to capture spatial variability sources in linear mixed-effects models, without imposing a parametric covariance structure on the random effects. However, including a spline component in a semiparametric model may change the estimated regression coefficients, a problem analogous to spatial confounding in spatially correlated random effects. Our research aims to investigate such effects in spline-based semiparametric regression for spatial data. We discuss estimators' behavior under the traditional spatial linear regression, how the estimates change in spatial confounding-like situations, and how selecting a proper tuning parameter for the spline can help reduce bias.
Small Sample Properties Of The Two Independent Sample Test For Means From Beta Distributions, Edward E. Gbur, Kevin Thompson
Small Sample Properties Of The Two Independent Sample Test For Means From Beta Distributions, Edward E. Gbur, Kevin Thompson
Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture
Researchers often collect proportion data that cannot be interpreted as arising from a set of Bernoulli trials. Analyses based on the beta distribution may be appropriate for such data. The SAS® GLIMMIX procedure provides a tool for these analyses using a likelihood based approach within the larger context of generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). The small sample behavior of likelihood based tests to compare the means from two independently sampled beta distributions were studied via simulation when the null hypothesis of equal means holds. Two simulation scenarios were defined by equal and unequal sample sizes and equal scale parameters. A …

Idaho is ranked 5th in the United States in overall wheat production and makes over $500 million in profit annually from wheat. Many pests have detrimental effects on wheat; some of the most predominant ones are aphids. Four species of aphids having economic effects on wheat crops in Idaho are: Diuraphis noxia, Metopolophium dirhodum, Rhopalosiphum padi, Sitobion avenae. Predictive regression models could be useful for better understanding of the occurrence of these aphid species. Count data for the four species were collected over 17 years via suction traps at 12 locations in wheat fields throughout …

Air temperature (Ta) is a key input in a wide range of agroclimatic applications. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Ts (Land Surface Temperature (LST)) products are widely used to estimate daily Ta. However, only daytime LST (Ts-day) or nighttime LST (Ts-night) data have been used to estimate Tmax/Tmin (daily maximum or minimum air temperature), respectively. The relationship between Tmax and Ts-night, and the one between Tmin and Ts-day has not been studied. In this study, both the ability of Ts-night data to estimate Tmax and the ability of Ts-day data to estimate Tmin were tested and studied in the Corn …
