Germanium is an outstanding anode material in terms of electrochemical performance, especially rate capability, but its developments are hindered by its high price because it is rare in the crust of earth, and its huge volume variation during the lithium insertion and extraction. Introducing other cheaper elements into the germanium-based material is an efficient way to dilute the high price, but normally sacrifice its electrochemical performance. By the combination of nanostructure design and cheap element (calcium) introduction, urchin-like Ca2Ge7O16 hierarchical hollow microspheres have been successfully developed in order to reduce the price and maintain the …

Research on development of efficient passivation materials for high performance and stable quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) is highly important. While ZnS is one of the most widely used passivation material in QDSCs, an alternative material based on ZnSe which was deposited on CdS/CdSe/TiO2 photoanode to form a semi-core/shell structure has been found to be more efficient in terms of reducing electron recombination in QDSCs in this work. It has been found that the solar cell efficiency was improved from 1.86% for ZnSe0 (without coating) to 3.99% using 2 layers of ZnSe coating (ZnSe2) deposited by successive ionic …

Experimental evidence of wave properties of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films is reported. Using magneto-optical imaging the propagation of dendrites across boundaries between a bare NbN film and areas coated by a Cu layer was visualized, and it was found that the propagation is refracted in full quantitative agreement with Snell's law. For the studied film of 170 nm thickness and a 0.9μm thick metal layer, the refractive index was close to n=1.4. The origin of the refraction is believed to be caused by the dendrites propagating as an electromagnetic shock wave, similar to damped modes …

The use of PbS colloidal quantum dots in photovoltaic devices is very promising because of their simple and low cost production processes and their unique properties, such as bandgap tunability and potential multiple exciton generation. Here we report the synthesis of PbS nanocrystals used for application in solar cells. The sulphur-rich nature of their surface appears to be caused by the exposure to ambient conditions. The use of methanol as medium during the ligand exchange process has a crucial role in the removal of native oleate ligands. Without proper ligand exchange, the unpassivated surface is subject to ambient hydroxylation leading …

There is an urgent need for conductive neural interfacing materials that exhibit mechanically compliant properties, while also retaining high strength and durability under physiological conditions. Currently, implantable electrode systems designed to stimulate and record neural activity are composed of rigid materials such as crystalline silicon and noble metals. While these materials are strong and chemically stable, their intrinsic stiffness and density induce glial scarring and eventual loss of electrode function in vivo. Conductive composites, such as polymers and hydrogels, have excellent electrochemical and mechanical properties, but are electrodeposited onto rigid and dense metallic substrates. In the work described here, strong …

Silicon batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high theoretical capacity, although a rapid capacity fade is normally observed, attributed mainly to volume expansion during lithiation. Here, we report for the first time successful synthesis of Si/void/SiO2/void/C nanostructures. The synthesis strategy only involves selective etching of SiO2 in Si/SiO2/C structures with hydrofluoric acid solution. Compared with reported results, such novel structures include a hard SiO2-coated layer, a conductive carbon-coated layer, and two internal void spaces. In the structures, the carbon can enhance conductivity, the SiO2 layer has mechanically …

A new electrolyte salt, sodium-difluoro(oxalato)borate (NaDFOB), was synthesized and studied, which enables excellent reversible capacity and high rate capability when used in Na/Na0.44MnO2 half cells. NaDFOB has excellent compatibility with various common solvents used in Na-ion batteries, in strong contrast to the solvent dependent performances of NaClO4 and NaPF6. In addition, NaDFOB possesses good stability and generates no toxic or dangerous products when exposed to air and water. All these properties demonstrate that NaDFOB could be used to prepare high performance electrolytes for emerging Na-ion batteries.

Developing nano/micro-structures which can effectively upgrade the intriguing properties of electrode materials for energy storage devices is always a key research topic. Ultrathin nanosheets were proved to be one of the potential nanostructures due to their high specific surface area, good active contact areas and porous channels. Herein, we report a unique hierarchical micro-spherical morphology of well-stacked and completely miscible molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets and graphene sheets, were successfully synthesized via a simple and industrial scale spray-drying technique to take the advantages of both MoS2 and graphene in terms of their high practical capacity values and high …

The recently observed large Rashba-type spin splitting in the BiTeX(X=I,Br,Cl) bulk states enables observation of the transition in Fermi surface topology from spindle torus to torus with varying the carrier density and offers an ideal platform for achieving practical spintronic applications and realizing nontrivial phenomena such as topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions. Here we use Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations to investigate the electronic structure of the bulk conduction band of BiTeCl single crystals with different carrier densities. We observe the topological transition of the Fermi surface (FS) from a spindle torus to a torus. The Landau-level fan diagram reveals the expected …

High volumetric capacitance is vital for the development of wearable and portable energy storage devices. We herein introduce a novel simple route for the fabrication of a highly porous, binder-free and free-standing polyaniline/reduced graphene oxide composite hydrogel (PANi/graphene hydrogel) as an electrode with a packing density of 1.02 g cm-3. PANi played critical roles in gelation, which include reduction, crosslinking, creation of pseudocapacitance and as a spacer preventing graphene sheets from stacking. The composite hydrogel film delivered a volumetric capacitance of 225.42 F cm-3 with a two-electrode supercapacitor configuration, which was enhanced to 592.96 F cm-3 …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
Highly twisted oriented polymer fibres and carbon nanotube yarns show large scale torsional actuation from volume expansion that can be induced, for example, thermally or by electrochemical charging. When formed into spring-like coils, the torsional actuation within the fibre or yarn generates powerful tensile actuation per muscle weight. For further development of these coil actuators and for the practical application of torsional actuators, it is important to standardise methods for characterising both the torsional stroke (rotation) and torque generated. By analogy with tensile actuators, we here introduce a method to measure both the free stroke and blocked torque in a …

Nerve system diseases like Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, etc. seriously affect thousands of patients' lives every year, making them suffer from pains and inconvenience. Recently, bio-interfaces between neural cells/tissues and polymer based biomaterials attracted worldwide attention due to the ability of polymer based biomaterials to serve as nerve conduits, drug carriers and neurites guidance platform in neuroregeneration. The role that bio-interface played and the way it interacted with neural tissues and cells have been thoroughly investigated by the researchers. In this paper we mainly focus on reviewing the bio-interface between nerve tissues/cells and advanced functional biocompatible polymers, such …

We have synthesized novel composite particles made of single-domain nanomagnets chemically bound to nanocrystals of diamond. Optically detected magnetic resonance spectra of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond allowed us to estimate the magnetic field of the nanomagnets and to observe the saturation of their magnetization when an external field of a few tens of mT has been applied. The saturation effect is in agreement with the size of the domains measured using transmission electron microscopy and a simple model of magnetization.

Diatoms are a major component of microbial biofouling layers that develop on man-made surfaces placed in aquatic environments, resulting in significant economic and environmental impacts. This paper describes surface functionalisation of the inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and their efficacy as fouling resistant materials. Their ability to resist interactions with the model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) was tested using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The capacity of the ICP-PEG materials to prevent settlement and colonisation of the fouling diatom Amphora coffeaeformis (Cleve) was also assayed. Variations were demonstrated …

[extract] Science is catching up to science fiction. Last year a paralysed man walked again after cell treatment bridged a gap in his spinal cord. Dozens of people have had bionic eyes implanted, and it may also be possible to augment them to see into the infra-red or ultra-violet. Amputees can control bionic limb implant with thoughts alone.

The " multilayer silicene" films were grown on Ag(111), with increasing thickness above 30 monolayers (ML). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observations suggest that the " multilayer silicene" is indeed a bulk-like Si(111) film with a (√ 3 x √ 3)R30° honeycomb superstructure on surface. The possibility for formation of Si(111)(√ 3 x √ 3)R30°-Ag reconstruction on the surface can be distinctively ruled out by peeling off the surface layer with the STM tip. On this surface, delocalized surface state as well as linear energy-momentum dispersion was observed from quasiparticle interference patterns. Our results indicate that a bulklike silicon film with …

CuO powders composed of different rod-like clusters or dandelion-like nanospheres are prepared by a low-temperature thermal decomposition process of Cu(OH)2 precursors, which are obtained via a catalytic template method. A tentative mechanism is proposed to explain the formation and transformation of different Cu(OH)2 nanostructures. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectra analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements, and galvanostatic cell cycling are employed to characterize the structures and electrochemical performance of these CuO samples. The results show that these CuO samples obtained after 500 °C calcination have a stable cycling performance with a reversible …

In this work we report a novel scalable strategy to prepare a lithium-air battery electrode from 3D N-doped pierced graphene microparticles (N-PGM) with highly active performance. This approach has combined the merits of spray drying technology and the hard template method. The pierced structured graphene microparticles were characterized physically and electrochemically. An x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and Raman spectra have revealed that the novel structure possesses a higher N-doping level than conventional graphene without the pierced structure. A much higher BET surface area was also achieved for the N-PGM than the conventional N-doped graphene microparticles (N-GM). Cyclic voltammetry indicated that the …

2015 Abeysinghe et al. Introduction: Despite attempts to prevent brain injury during the hyperacute phase of stroke, most sufferers end up with significant neuronal loss and functional deficits. The use of cell-based therapies to recover the injured brain offers new hope. In the current study, we employed human neural stem cells (hNSCs) isolated from subventricular zone (SVZ), and directed their differentiation into GABAergic neurons followed by transplantation to ischemic brain. Methods: Pre-differentiated GABAergic neurons, undifferentiated SVZ-hNSCs or media alone were stereotaxically transplanted into the rat brain (n=7/group) 7 days after endothelin-1 induced stroke. Neurological outcome was assessed by neurological deficit …

Electron lifetimes in dye-sensitized solar cells employing a porphyrin dye, an organic dye, a 1:1 mixture of the two dyes and a di-chromophoric dye design consisting of the two dyes using a non-conjugated linker were measured, suggesting that the dispersion force of the organic dyes has a significant detrimental effect on the electron lifetime and that the di-chromophoric design can be utilized to control the effect of the dispersion force.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is an organic conducting polymer that has been the focus of significant research over the last decade, in both energy and biological applications. Most commonly, PEDOT is doped by the artificial polymer polystyrene sulfonate due to the excellent electrical characteristics yielded by this pairing. The biopolymer dextran sulphate (DS) has been recently reported as a promising alternative to PEDOT: PSS for biological application, having electrical properties rivaling PEDOT: PSS, complimented by the potential bioactivity of the polysaccharide. In this work we compared chemical and electrochemical polymerisations of PEDOT: DS in terms of their impact on the electrical, morphological …

The cubic garnet-type solid electrolyte Li7La3Zr2O12 with aliovalent doping exhibits a high ionic conductivity, reaching up to ∼10−3 S/cm at room temperature. Fully understanding the Li+ transport mechanism including Li+ mobility at different sites is a key topic in this field, and Li7−2x−3yAlyLa3Zr2−xWxO12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) are selected as target electrolytes. X-ray and neutron diffraction as well as ac impedance results show that a low amount of aliovalent substitution of Zr with W does not obviously affect the crystal structure and the activation energy of Li+ ion jumping, but it does noticeably vary the distribution of Li+ ions, …

Recent developments in graphene oxide fibre (GO) processing include exciting demonstrations of hand woven textile structures. However, it is uncertain whether the fibres produced can meet the processing requirements of conventional textile manufacturing. This work reports for the first time the production of highly flexible and tough GO fibres that can be knitted using textile machinery. The GO fibres are made by using a dry-jet wet-spinning method, which allows drawing of the spinning solution (the GO dispersion) in several stages of the fibre spinning process. The coagulation composition and spinning conditions are evaluated in detail, which led to the production …

In this work, we present observations of ultrafast carrier dynamics and spin polarization in a multiferroic manganite BiFe0.5Mn0.5O3 film excited by linearly and circularly polarized femtosecond pulses, respectively. The d-band charge transfer transition is reasonably assigned to Γ3 → Γ5. The transient reflectivity decay on a time scale as fast as only 0.3 ps is consistent with the picture of ultrafast electron-phonon coupling. The ultrafast switching of polarization ellipticity (< 150 fs) originates from a transient coherent spin polarization by optical orientation. The ultrafast spin polarization switching is assigned to the Raman coherence process.

In nerve and muscle regeneration applications, the incorporation of conducting elements into biocompatible materials has gained interest over the last few years, as it has been shown that electrical stimulation of some regenerating cells has a positive effect on their development. A variety of different materials, ranging from graphene to conducting polymers, have been incorporated into hydrogels and increased conductivities have been reported. However, the majority of conductivity measurements are performed in a dry state, even though material blends are designed for applications in a wet state, in vivo environment. The focus of this work is to use polypyrrole nanoparticles …

We present a detailed investigation on the doping dependence of the upper critical fieldHc2(T) of FeSexTe1−xthin films (0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.90) by measuring the electrical resistivity as a function of magnetic field. The Hc2(T) curves exhibit a downturn behavior with decreasing temperature in all the samples, owing to the Pauli-limited effect (spin paramagnetic effect). The Pauli-limited effect on the upper critical field can be monotonically modulated by variation of the Se/Te composition. Our results show that Te-doping induced disorder and excess Fe atoms give rise to enhancement of the Pauli-limited effect.

Sintering temperature plays a vital role in the evolution of phase structure and microstructure in polycrystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulks fabricated by the two-step sintering method, and thus significantly influences their superconducting properties. Elevated sintering temperature (600-700°C) at second step facilitates the substitution of Te into the superconducting phase, which leads to the increased lattice distortion and thus contributes to the enhancement of superconductivity (the value of Tc reaches 15.6K). At the same time, the accelerated growth of the superconducting grains and the improved homogeneity motivated by elevated sintering temperature serve as the main reason for the sharp superconducting transition.
