Biohydrogen Production Of A Co-Culture Consisting Of Halophytic Cyanobacterium Phormidium Keutzingianum And Activated Sludge Bacteria Using Different Exogenous Carbon Substrates And Salt Concentrations, Maitha Mohammed Al Nuaimi Apr 2023

Biohydrogen Production Of A Co-Culture Consisting Of Halophytic Cyanobacterium Phormidium Keutzingianum And Activated Sludge Bacteria Using Different Exogenous Carbon Substrates And Salt Concentrations, Maitha Mohammed Al Nuaimi

Theses

Various studies have proved the ability of different types of cyanobacteria and algae to produce hydrogen (H2) by splitting water molecules into H2 and oxygen (O2) using specialized enzymes (hydrogenase and nitrogenase enzymes) through the biophotolysis process. However, the production of O2 acts as the main process inhibitor. Several researchers studied this O2 sensitivity and proposed effective solutions to regulate O2 concentration. By co-culturing algae with aerobic bacteria, the consumption of the resulting oxygen could be attained and thus reducing the sensitivity of the enzyme to the evolved O2. In …

Moral Injury To Inform Analysis Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Amanda Julia Manea Apr 2023

Moral Injury To Inform Analysis Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Amanda Julia Manea

Senior Theses

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that almost one out of ten veterans struggle with. Although the National Center for PTSD has made extensive progress in characterizing and developing new treatments for PTSD, most veterans still experience symptoms of PTSD following treatment. Novel avenues of investigation, such as developing algorithms to review electronic health record (EHR) data and better understanding moral injury, are being pursued to address the gap that still exists when it comes to treating veterans. Moral injury is the individual evaluation of exposure to a potentially morally injurious event (PMIE) and can lead to …

That’S My Deity: An Examination Of Online Lokean Cultures Through Log-Linear Modeling, Mary Bernstein Apr 2023

That’S My Deity: An Examination Of Online Lokean Cultures Through Log-Linear Modeling, Mary Bernstein

Senior Theses

A rise in online religious communities and the growth of so-called ‘Old World’ religions are reflected in the internet’s subcultures of Neopaganism, a growing religious movement that has been documented in America since the 1960s. The religions under this umbrella movement vary drastically and include belief systems such as Wicca, Druidry, and deity worship. Belief systems under this movement lack the traditional hierarchy found in structured religion and lack a singular sacred text. As such, believers usually find and support one another not through a physical sacred place of meeting, but through an online community that acts as sacred space. …

Modeling Immune System Dynamics During Hiv Infection And Treatment With Differential Equations, Nicole Rychagov Apr 2023

Modeling Immune System Dynamics During Hiv Infection And Treatment With Differential Equations, Nicole Rychagov

CODEE Journal

An inquiry-based project that discusses immune system dynamics during HIV infection using differential equations is presented. The complex interactions between healthy T-cells, latently infected T-cells, actively infected T-cells, and the HIV virus are modeled using four nonlinear differential equations. The model is adapted to simulate long term HIV dynamics, including the AIDS state, and is used to simulate the long term effects of the traditional antiretroviral therapy (ART). The model is also used to test viral rebound over time of combined application of ART and a new drug that blocks the reactivation of the viral genome in the infected cells …

Modeling The Probability Of A Successful Stolen Base Attempt In Major League Baseball, Cade Stanley Apr 2023

Modeling The Probability Of A Successful Stolen Base Attempt In Major League Baseball, Cade Stanley

Senior Theses

In Major League Baseball (MLB), the outcome of a stolen base attempt has important implications. Success moves the runner closer to scoring, while failure records an out and removes the runner from the basepaths altogether. Therefore, it is important that the decision by a coach or player to steal a base is well-informed. In this thesis, I explore a statistical approach to making this decision. I train logistic regression and random forest models, using data about the game situation and about the runner, pitcher, and catcher involved in the stolen base attempt, to estimate the probability that a stolen base …

Interactive Emirate Sign Language E-Dictionary Based On Deep Learning Recognition Models, Ahmed Abdelhadi Abdelhadi Apr 2023

Interactive Emirate Sign Language E-Dictionary Based On Deep Learning Recognition Models, Ahmed Abdelhadi Abdelhadi

Theses

According to the ministry of community development database in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) about 3065 people with disabilities are hearing disabled (Emirates News Agency - Ministry of Community Development). Hearing-impaired people find it difficult to communicate with the rest of society. They usually need Sign Language (SL) interpreters but as the number of hearing-impaired individuals grows the number of Sign Language interpreters can almost be non-existent. In addition, specialized schools lack a unified Sign Language (SL) dictionary, which can be linked to the Arabic language being of a diglossia nature, hence many dialects of the language co-exist. Moreover, there …

Sebd: A Stream Evolving Bot Detection Framework With Application Of Pac Learning Approach To Maintain Accuracy And Confidence Levels, Eiman Alothali, Kadhim Hayawi, Hany Alashwal

All Works

A simple supervised learning model can predict a class from trained data based on the previous learning process. Trust in such a model can be gained through evaluation measures that ensure fewer misclassification errors in prediction results for different classes. This can be applied to supervised learning using a well-trained dataset that covers different data points and has no imbalance issues. This task is challenging when it integrates a semi-supervised learning approach with a dynamic data stream, such as social network data. In this paper, we propose a stream-based evolving bot detection (SEBD) framework for Twitter that uses a deep …

Irregular Domination In Graphs, Caryn Mays Apr 2023

Irregular Domination In Graphs, Caryn Mays

Dissertations

Domination in graphs has been a popular area of study due in large degree to its applications to modern society as well as the mathematical beauty of the topic. While this area evidently began with the work of Claude Berge in 1958 and Oystein Ore in 1962, domination did not become an active area of research until 1977 with the appearance of a survey paper by Ernest Cockayne and Stephen Hedetniemi. Since then, a large number of variations of domination have surfaced and provided numerous applications to different areas of science and real-life problems. Among these variations are domination parameters …

Extreme Covering Systems, Primes Plus Squarefrees, And Lattice Points Close To A Helix, Jack Robert Dalton

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers three different topics.

In the first part, we prove that if the least modulus of a distinct covering system is 4, its largest modulus is at least 60; also, if the least modulus is 3, the least common multiple of the moduli is at least 120; finally, if the least modulus is 4, the least common multiple of the moduli is at least 360. The constants 60, 120, and 360 are best possible, they cannot be replaced by larger constants. We also show that there do not exist distinct covering systems with all of the moduli in …

Measuring Radiation Protection: Partners From Across The Nuclear Enterprise Evaluate The Radiation Protection Of Us Army Vehicles, Andrew W. Decker, Robert Prins

Faculty Publications

Recent mounting nuclear threats and postures from adversary nation-states, such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, represent a clear danger to the interests and security of the United States of America and its Allies. To meet these threats, the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review requires the Department of Defense (DoD) to design, develop, and manage a combat-credible U.S. military which, among other prioritizations, is survivable. A survivable force can generate combat power despite adversary attacks. As such, the US Army must prepare today to set the conditions for successful conventional warfare on the nuclear battlefields of tomorrow. Our Army cannot …

Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez Apr 2023

Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Influence diagnostics in regression analysis allow analysts to identify observations that have a strong influence on model fitted probabilities and parameter estimates. The most common influence diagnostics, such as Cook’s Distance for linear regression, are based on a deletion approach where the results of a model with and without observations of interest are compared. Here, deletion-based influence diagnostics are proposed for generalized estimating equations (GEE) for correlated, or clustered, nominal multinomial responses. The proposed influence diagnostics focus on GEEs with the baseline-category logit link function and a local odds ratio parameterization of the association structure. Formulas for both observation- and …

Tourism, Mapping, Retail And Recreational Trails: A Case Study Of Connectivity Between Trails And Adjacent Downtowns In Anniston, Alabama, Usa, Jennifer Green

Theses

This study examines the estimated increase in economic impact on a geography’s local economy by creating cross-marketing efforts between expanding an established outdoor recreation trail to a closely located city downtown commerce district. This research will analyze the resulting potential rise in sales/lodging tax revenues for that city by mapping the trail and downtown district, and cross-marketing the other to users of both or either venue. Potential increase in economic impact will be estimated utilizing IMPLAN methodology by assessing the economic impact on the local economy that a percentage range of increased spending resulting from this cross-marketing effort could generate.
