CERCOM Reports

CERCOM conducts monitoring of 111 beach locations spanning from Brooklyn to Montauk during the optimal breeding season of Limulus polyphemus. These surveys span approximately 15 weeks, commencing in May and concluding in August. Each beach location is meticulously marked with GPS coordinates to ensure consistent annual revisitation. Participation in these surveys necessitates attendance at an HSC Survey training orientation, led by Mr. Key Maurelli, CERCOM's research assistant.

"Epitaxial electrodeposition is a simple, low-cost technology to produce highly ordered materials on single-crystal surfaces. This research focuses on the epitaxial electrodeposition of wide bandgap p-type semiconductors and epitaxial Cu thin films via a self-assembled monolayer for energy conversion and flexible electronics. Paper I introduces the epitaxial electrodeposition of hole conducting CuSCN nanorods onto Au (111) surface, and lift-off to produce flexible and transparent foils. Highly ordered CuSCN could serve as an inorganic transport layer in various opto-electronic devices such as perovskite solar cells, LEDs, and transistors. "Comets are among the most well-preserved objects that formed in the protosolar nebula ∼4.5 Gyr ago. Hence, they are important for understanding various aspects of the formation, evolution, and habitability of the solar system. Multiple primary volatiles (molecules directly sublimating into the coma from the nucleus) emit via rovibrational transitions in the near-IR, providing opportunities to calculate their abundances. To date, only ∼50 comets have been characterized for their primary volatiles, with the short-period Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) being significantly underrepresented. "RuBisCO-inspired CO2 capture and release (CCR) systems featuring amines have been developed for the purpose of reversable CO2 capture from air. The enzyme active site consists of the tetrapeptide sequence Lys-Asp-Asp-Glu. The Lys sidechain amine undergoes carbamylation and an Mg2+ cation stabilizes the resulting carbamate. The Na-acyl-lysinyl-aspratyl-aspartyl-glutamide (Lys-Asp-Asp-Glu, KDDE) peptide featured maximum capture at pH ≈ 10; a pH region too high for Mg2+ ions to remain in solution. "The unique alignment of the Decaturville, Crooked Creek, and Weaubleau geological structures in central Missouri, three of nine known such structures along the 38th parallel in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, has puzzled geoscientists for decades. Research using palynology (palynomorphs and particulate organic matter) and radiometric dating of impact spherules were used to constrain age and a relationship between these enigmatic structures and infer their paleoenvironmental conditions. Novel melting damages, unique to impact, were documented in the palynomorphs in all the three structures. In Bangladesh, internal climate displacement will continue pushing millions to the urbanizing centres where migrants make homes in informal settlements. These settlements, too, are sites for climate hazards such as heat stress and flooding, affecting climate-displaced and economic migrants alike. The demands of growing migrant populations and long-term informal settlement dwellers converge around rights to secure land and housing, acknowledged in policies at both national and urban scales. In this paper, we propose the introduction of a neutrosophic chi-square-test for consistency, incorporating neutrosophic statistics. Our aim is to modify the existing chi-square -test for consistency in order to analyze imprecise data. We present a novel test statistic for the neutrosophic chi-square -test for consistency, which accounts for the uncertainties inherent in the data. In this paper, we consider how the ability to learn Code Execution Tasks affects a model’s accuracy on software vulnerability detection (SVD) benchmark datasets. We initially find that models can achieve near state-of-the-art accuracy on SVD benchmarks regardless of their ability to learn Code Execution Tasks. However, these models fail to generalize well across SVD benchmarks. The results indicate a bias in the datasets that allows models to predict non- SVD signals. Under the theory that different collection methods will reduce biases, we investigate combining the SVD datasets. When trained on combined datasets, SVD accuracy is reduced but correlation with …

We study a partial ordering on pairings called the uncrossing poset, which first appeared in the literature in connection with a certain stratified space of planar electrical networks. We begin by examining some of the relationships between the uncrossing poset and Catalan combinatorics, and then proceed to study the structure of lower intervals. We characterize the lower intervals in the uncrossing poset that are isomorphic to the face lattice of a cube. Moving up in complexity certain lower intervals are isomorphic to the poset of simple vertex labeled minors of an associated graph.

We assess the suitability of potassium ferri-/ferrocyanide as an electroactive species for long-term utilization in aqueous organic redox flow batteries. A series of electrochemical and chemical characterization experiments was performed to distinguish between structural decomposition and apparent capacity fade of ferri-/ferrocyanide solutions used in the capacity-limiting side of a flow battery. Our results indicate that, in contrast with previous reports, no structural decomposition of ferri-/ferrocyanide occurs at tested pH values as high as 14 in the dark or in diffuse indoor light. Toxic inhalation agents (TIAs) (i.e., chlorine (Cl2), cyanide (HCN), etc.) are highly poisonous. However, they have a variety of industrial uses, such as health, agro-food, building, textiles, transport, leisure activities, cosmetics, etc. In addition, TIAs can be used as chemical agents in terrorist events or conventional warfare. The ability to detect TIAs in biological and environmental samples is important for preparing use, determining individual exposure, limiting hazardous exposure, etc. Therefore, developing simple and sensitive analytical methods for TIAs, TIA metabolites, and antidotes for those toxic agents is very important. Fish require a variety of resources including prey, thermal refugia, and different physical habitat characteristics to grow and reproduce. All necessary resources are rarely provided by a single habitat, resulting in tradeoffs between occupying different habitats; therefore, the ability to move among heterogenous habitats is critical. These tradeoffs may occur in lakes with connected wetlands where the main lake habitats tend to be more thermally stable, but wetlands often provide more diverse and abundant prey.
