However, they have a variety of industrial uses, such as health, agro-food, building, textiles, transport, leisure activities, cosmetics, etc. In addition, TIAs can be used as chemical agents in terrorist events or conventional warfare. Fish require a variety of resources including prey, thermal refugia, and different physical habitat characteristics to grow and reproduce. All necessary resources are rarely provided by a single habitat, resulting in tradeoffs between occupying different habitats; therefore, the ability to move among heterogenous habitats is critical. These tradeoffs may occur in lakes with connected wetlands where the main lake habitats tend to be more thermally stable, but wetlands often provide more diverse and abundant prey. Understanding soil N transformations in agricultural systems of the Northern Great Plains is crucial for guiding effective soil and nutrient management of this vital cropland. While the use of biochar in agriculture has attracted great attention recently, little has been reported on the seasonal dynamics of soil nitrogen (N) transformation and its response to biochar application. A field experiment was conducted over 2 seasons, spring (6/3/19-6/24/19) and summer (7/26/19-8/16/19), using four treatments or control soil, urea (224 kg N/ha), biochar (46,250 kg/ha), and urea+biochar (224 kg N/ha and 46,250 kg/ha, respectively). Synthetic container molecules that emulate biological structures and feature well-defined nanocavities have attracted tremendous interest among supramolecular chemists due to their promising potentials in ion recognition, catalysis, and chemical sensing. Our laboratory has developed a new class of container molecules, namely, metal-organic supercontainers (MOSCs), which feature both endo and exo cavities suitable for binding guest molecules. Waves propagate diffusively through disordered media, such as biological tissue, clouds, and paint, due to random scattering. Recent advances in optical wavefront shaping techniques have enabled controlling coherent light propagation in multiple-scattering samples. We overcome wave diffusion to deliver optical energy into a target region of arbitrary size and shape anywhere inside a strong-scattering system. This is particularly important for applications such as photoacoustic microscopy and optogenetics, where light needs to be deposited deep into biological tissue. Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics Provides An Ideal Platform To Engineer And Control Light-Matter Interactions With Polariton Quasiparticles. In This Work, We Investigate Collective Phenomena In A System Of Many Particles In A Harmonic Trap Coupled To A Homogeneous Cavity Vacuum Field. The System Couples Collectively To The Cavity Field, Through Its Center Of Mass, And Collective Polariton States Emerge. This study examines how a rural-serving school district aimed to provide elementary-level computer science (CS) by offering instruction during students’ computer lab time. As part of a research-practice partnership, cross-context mathematics and CS lessons were co-designed to expansively frame and highlight connections across – as opposed to integration within – the two subjects. Findings indicated that most students who engaged with the lessons across the lab and classroom contexts reported finding the lessons interesting, seeing connections to their mathematics classes, and understanding the programming. In contrast, a three-level logistic regression model showed that students who only learned about mathematics connections …

Preliminary identities in the theory of basic hypergeometric series, or `q-series', are proven. These include q-analogues of the exponential function, which lead to a fairly simple proof of Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity due to Andrews. The Dedekind eta function is introduced and a few identities of it derived. Euler's pentagonal number theorem is shown as a special case of Ramanujan's theta function and Watson's quintuple product identity is proved in a manner given by Carlitz and Subbarao. Breast density screenings are an accepted means to determine a patient's predisposed risk of breast cancer development. Although the direct correlation is not fully understood, breast cancer risk increases with higher levels of mammographic breast density. Radiologists visually assess a patient's breast density using mammogram images and assign a density score based on four breast density categories outlined by the Breast Imaging and Reporting Data Systems (BI-RADS). There have been efforts to develop automated tools that assist radiologists with increasing workloads and to help reduce the intra- and inter-rater variability between radiologists. Research on Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) has increased due to the availability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and the electronic components that control and connect them. Many applications, such as 3D mapping, construction inspection, or emergency response operations could benefit from an application and adaptation of swarm intelligence-based deployments of multiple UAVs. Such groups of cooperating UAVs, through the use of local rules, could be seen as network nodes establishing an ad-hoc network for communication purposes.

Mott insulators provide a window into some of the most intensely investigated phenomena in physics. Recent discoveries—including the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity in doped Mott insulators not from the cuprate family of superconductors—have inspired investigation into systems with strong electron-electron interactions. One of these systems is La1-xSrxVO3, in which one end-member, LaVO3, is a Mott insulator and the other, SrVO3, is a strongly correlated metal.

The traffic and roadway safety agencies spend significant efforts each year collecting roadway data, including lane configurations and other road surface marking data, such as areas with school zone markings, sidewalks, left turns, right turns, bicycle lanes, etc., for safety analysis and planning purposes. The current manual data collection methods pose significant operational and quality control challenges as they are costly and prone to errors. Development Of High Kinetic Inductance Superconducting Nanowire Devices On High Permittivity Strontium Titanate Substrates, Jamie Timmons

This thesis involves the fabrication and characterization of devices made from two different superconducting materials: yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO), a high-TC complex oxide, and niobium nitride (NbN), a low-TC transition metal nitride. Both types of devices are fabricated on strontium titanate substrates, which provides a good lattice match to YBCO and also an extremely large permittivity at low temperature. We demonstrate that wet etching of YBCO thin films via bromine can be a viable microfrabriation technique for the material. Using approximately 35 nm thick epitaxially grown YBCO on an STO substrate, we were able to fabricate YBCO “microwires” with …

The COVID-19 pandemic presents significant challenges due to its high transmissibility and mortality risk. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as RT-PCR, have limitations that hinder timely and accurate screening. In response, AI-powered computer-aided imaging analysis techniques have emerged as a promising alternative for COVID-19 diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that combines the strengths of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) to enhance the performance of COVID-19 diagnosis models. CNN excels at capturing spatial features in medical images, while ViT leverages self-attention mechanisms inspired by human radiologists. Transition-metal catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) cross coupling is a powerful synthetic method for constructing carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds in designing organic compounds, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and precursors for materials. However, the nature of catalysis and identity of the transition metal catalysts used in these reactions remain under debate or unknown. This dissertation reports the studies of three metals: Pd, Cu, and Ni. Pd-nanocluster catalysts and their formation in ligand-free SM reactions with Pd(II) nitrate as a precatalyst was investigated. Optical frequency combs have numerous applications across the sciences. One of the most powerful applications is in molecular spectroscopy, which takes advantage of both the coherence of lasers and combs’ inherent broad bandwidth. One well-established design is the erbium fiber comb, which is popular due to its low cost and relative ease of construction. I have modified the traditional all-fiber design by introducing an adjustable free-space section which allows for adjustments to the path length, and thus the comb’s repetition rate. The current industrial syngas process for transforming methane to methanol is an indirect process that requires the initial oxidation of methane to carbon monoxide with a subsequent reduction to form methanol under high pressure and temperature conditions. An alternative green chemical process is desirable, especially one that directly oxidizes gaseous methane to liquid methanol under mild conditions with an environmentally benign oxidant, such as dioxygen. The current study investigates the synthesis of a novel palladium complex with activated methane and the selective oxidation of this complex resulting in the liberation of methanol under more ambient conditions, a model system for …
