United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Black Carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) was imported to the USA to control aquaculture pond snails. This species has escaped captivity and occurs in parts of the Mississippi River, several tributaries, and floodplain lakes, which is concerning due to potential competition with native fishes and predation on native mussels, many of which are imperiled. However, Black Carp captures have primarily been incidental by commercial fishers, and evidence of reproduction in the wild is limited. The objectives of this study were to assess relative abundance of aquaculture- origin and wild Black Carp using ploidy and otolith stable isotope analysis, identify spatial …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The interaction of intense light with matter gives rise to competing nonlinear responses that can dynamically change material properties. Prominent examples are saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA), which dynamically increase and decrease the transmission of a sample depending on pulse intensity, respectively. The availability of intense soft X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FELs) has led to observations of SA and TPA in separate experiments, leaving open questions about the possible interplay between and relative strength of the two phenomena. Here, we systematically study both phenomena in one experiment by exposing graphite films to soft X-ray FEL pulses of …

Very High Middle Miocene Surface Productivity On The U.S. Mid-Atlantic Shelf Amid Glacioeustatic Sea Level Variability, Marci M. Robinson, Harry J. Dowsett, Timothy D. Herbert

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) provides important insights into how the climate system operates under elevated temperatures and atmospheric CO2 levels. Few western North Atlantic paleotemperature or paleoecological records exist from the MCO, despite their importance for understanding both regional and global climate dynamics. Here we present quantitative MCO paleoecological data from the western North Atlantic, specifically from the Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) marine sediment core from southern Maryland, USA. We examine alkenones and planktic foraminifera and document the first sea surface temperature (SST) and productivity estimates for the MCO and the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT) from …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Discovery of hidden geothermal resources is challenging. It requires the mining of large datasets with diverse data attributes representing subsurface hydrogeological and geothermal conditions. The commonly used play fairway analysis approach typically incorporates subject-matter expertise to analyze regional data to estimate geothermal characteristics and favorability. We demonstrate an alternative approach based on machine learning (ML) to process a geothermal dataset from southwest New Mexico (SWNM). The study region includes low- and medium-temperature hydrothermal systems. Several of these systems are not well characterized because of insufficient existing data and limited past explorative work. This study discovers hidden patterns and relations in …

Maximum Spatial Perturbation Consistency For Unpaired Image-To-Image Translation, Yanwu Xu, Shaoan Xie, Wenhao Wu, Kun Zhang, Mingming Gong, Kayhan Batmanghelich

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Unpaired image-to-image translation (I2I) is an ill-posed problem, as an infinite number of translation functions can map the source domain distribution to the target distribution. Therefore, much effort has been put into designing suitable constraints, e.g., cycle consistency (CycleGAN), geometry consistency (GCGAN), and contrastive learning-based constraints (CUTGAN), that help better pose the problem. However, these well-known constraints have limitations: (1) they are either too restrictive or too weak for specific I2I tasks; (2) these methods result in content distortion when there is a significant spatial variation between the source and target domains. This paper proposes a universal regularization technique called …

Orthogonal Point Location And Rectangle Stabbing Queries In 3-D, Timothy M. Chan, Yakov Nekrich, Saladi Rahul, Konstantinos Tsakalidis

Michigan Tech Publications

In this work, we present a collection of new results on two fundamental problems in geometric data structures: orthogonal point location and rectangle stabbing.• Orthogonal point location. We give the first linear-space data structure that sup- ports 3-d point location queries on n disjoint axis-aligned boxes with optimal O (log") query time in the (arithmetic) pointer machine model. This improves the previous 0 (\ogi/2 n^ bound of Rahul \SODA 201o|. We similarly obtain the first linear-space data structure in the I/O model with optimal query cost, and also the first linear-space data structure in the word HAM model with sub-logarithmic …

Ubnormal: New Benchmark For Supervised Open-Set Video Anomaly Detection, Andra Acsintoae, Andrei Florescu, Mariana-Iuliana Georgescu, Tudor Mare, Paul Sumedrea, Radu Tudor Ionescu, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Mubarak Shah

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Detecting abnormal events in video is commonly framed as a one-class classification task, where training videos contain only normal events, while test videos encompass both normal and abnormal events. In this scenario, anomaly detection is an open-set problem. However, some studies assimilate anomaly detection to action recognition. This is a closed-set scenario that fails to test the capability of systems at detecting new anomaly types. To this end, we propose UBnormal, a new supervised open-set benchmark composed of multiple virtual scenes for video anomaly detection. Unlike existing data sets, we introduce abnormal events annotated at the pixel level at training …

Pstr: End-To-End One-Step Person Search With Transformers, Jiale Cao, Pang Yanwei, Rao Anwer, Hisham Cholakkal, Jin Xie, Mubarak Shah, Fahad Shahbaz Khan

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

We propose a novel one-step transformer-based person search framework, PSTR, that jointly performs person detection and re-identification (re-id) in a single architecture. PSTR comprises a person search-specialized (PSS) module that contains a detection encoder-decoder for person detection along with a discriminative re-id decoder for person re-id. The discriminative re-id decoder utilizes a multi-level supervision scheme with a shared decoder for discriminative re-id feature learning and also comprises a part attention block to encode relationship between different parts of a person. We further introduce a simple multi-scale scheme to support re-id across person instances at different scales. PSTR jointly achieves the …

Characterization Of Superconducting Hardware For Implementing Quantum Stabilizers, Kenneth Richard Dodge Sep 2022

Characterization Of Superconducting Hardware For Implementing Quantum Stabilizers, Kenneth Richard Dodge

Dissertations - ALL

Superconducting qubits are one of the leading approaches being investigated for building a scalable quantum computer. In the presence of external noise and perturbations plus local microscopic fluctuations and dissipation in the qubit environment, arbitrary quantum states will decohere, leading to bit-flip and phase-flip errors of the qubit. In order to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer that can preserve and process quantum information in the presence of noise and dissipation, one must implement some form of quantum error correction. Stabilizer operations are at the heart of quantum error correction and are typically implemented in software-controlled entangling gates and measurements of …

Spontaneous Polarization In An Ultrathin Improper-Ferroelectric/Dielectric Bilayer In A Capacitor Structure At Cryogenic Temperatures, Yu Yun, Pratyush Buragohain, Arashdeep Singh Thind, Yuewei Yin, Xin Li, Xuanyuan Jiang, Rohan Mishra, Alexei Gruverman, X. S. Xu

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

To determine the effect of depolarization and the critical thickness in improper-ferroelectric hexagonal-ferrite thin films, we investigate the polarization switching of a ferroelectric/dielectric bilayer in capacitor structures at 20 K. Experimentally, we show that the spontaneous polarization persists throughout the studied thickness range (3 to 80 unit cell), even with a thick (10-nm) dielectric layer, suggesting no practical thickness limit for applications. By fitting the effect of depolarization using the phenomenological theory, we show that the spontaneous polarization remains finite when the thickness of the ferroelectric layer approaches zero, providing a hint for the absence of critical thickness. We also …

Short Warm-Side Wet-Bulb Temperature Distribution Tails Lead To Accelerated Increases In Extreme Threshold Exceedances Under Global Warming, Yianna Sotirios Bekris Sep 2022

Short Warm-Side Wet-Bulb Temperature Distribution Tails Lead To Accelerated Increases In Extreme Threshold Exceedances Under Global Warming, Yianna Sotirios Bekris

Dissertations and Theses

Humid-heat extremes threaten human health and are increasing in frequency with global warming, so elucidating factors affecting their rate of change is critical. This thesis examines the role of historical (1985-2014) wet-bulb temperature distribution tail shape on the probability of wet-bulb temperature extreme threshold exceedances under 2°Celsius global warming. Analysis of global climate models and reanalysis reveals that non-Gaussian wet-bulb temperature distribution tails are common worldwide across extensive, spatially coherent regions. More rapid increases in the number of days exceeding the historical 95th percentile are projected in locations with shorter-than-Gaussian warm-side tails. Of the two primary components of wet-bulb temperature, …

Coal Geology & Exploration

The Shan2 3 Sub-member transitional facies shale of the Permian Shanxi Formation in the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin is a crucial target for future unconventional oil and gas exploration. Based on field outcrop observation, core description and thin-section identification, combined with X-ray diffraction, trace elements test and other analyses, four types of shale lithofacies were identified, including siliceous, siliceous-argillaceous, calcareous-siliceous (or siliceous-calcareous) and argillaceous lithofacies. The petrological characteristics and geochemical indicators show that the depositional environment of the Shan2 3 Sub-member inherited the epicontinental sea pattern with relatively gentle topography of the late Taiyuan Epoch. The …

Coal Geology & Exploration

In the 2D seismic area, the reservoir with a low well control degree, frontal sedimentary of the meandering river's delta and other complex lithology reservoirs, the drilling ratio of reservoirs is low when horizontal wells are implemented. The application of the geosteering technology combining the iterative updating of 3D geologic models and geologic-engineering integration has been gradually extensive. Multiple tight sandstone reservoirs, such as the Beichagou sandstone in the Shan2 3 Submember of the Shanxi Formation, develop in the Neopaleozoic coal measure at the southeastern margin of the Ordos Basin. Among them, the DJ-P37 bore field of the Daning–Jixian …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Baode Block in the eastern margin of Ordos Basin is the first coalbed methane field of middle-low rank coal with 500 million cubic meters of production capacity constructed and reached in China, and it is also a benchmark in the coalbed methane industry there. During the development of Baode Block, good results are obtained by the commingled development of two sets of main coal layers, which are better than that of single-layer development. However, poor development result is obtained locally in the commingled development of some wells under the same development conditions, which is poorer than that of single-layer development. …

Formation Pressure Calculation Of Tight Sandstone Gas Reservoir Based On Material Balance Inversion Method, Wu Nan, Shi Shi, Zheng Shiqi, Zhao Haoyang, Wang Hongya, Tong Jiangnan

Coal Geology & Exploration

Pressure is the soul of a gas reservoir. Formation pressure is the basis of evaluating gas well productivity and analyzing gas reservoir potential. However, due to data integrity and method applicability limitations, formation pressure in most gas wells cannot be accurately obtained. On the basis of a small amount of pressure monitoring data, the material balance inversion method is proposed by using mathematical inversion thought to evaluate the formation pressure of tight sandstone gas reservoirs. Firstly, the dynamic reserves of gas wells are calculated by fitting the Blasingame chart with the production data of gas wells under pseudo-steady flow. Secondly, …

Practice And Understanding Of Coalbed Methane Co-Production In Zhijin Area, Guizhou, Li Jiaxin, Chen Zhenlong, Guo Tao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Guizhou Province is a typical area where thin-to-medium thick coalbeds are developed, where the resource endowment characteristics, including multiple coalbeds, small thickness, low permeability, high in-situ stress and multi-layer superposition of pressure system, lead to the difficulties in localization of the mainstream technologies at home and abroad for the development of coalbed methane (CBM) and the utilization of CBM resources. The particularity of these geological characteristics of the multiple and thin CBM determines the obvious selectivity of technologies for its development, and thus the co-production of multiple coalbeds becomes the essential method for effective development and utilization of CBM resources …
