River landings are common public grounds, visited by many people every day. The aftermath of visiting these places may be unsettling since much trash is left behind and scattered throughout. The litter collects and with each rain or high wind, it has a better chance of ending up in our streams, rivers, creeks, and eventually our oceans. The main purpose of this study was to measure both air and water quality throughout the Ogeechee River basin in South Georgia to determine how each was impacted by trash. Wind power is an expanding source of renewable energy. However, there are ecological challenges related to wind energy generation, including collisions of wildlife with turbines. Lack of rigor, and variation in study design, together limit efforts to understand the broad-scale effects of wind power infrastructure on wildlife populations. It is not clear, however, whether these types of limitations apply to groups of birds such as raptors that are particularly vulnerable to negative effects of wind energy. Increasing human-wildlife conflicts worldwide are driving the need for multiple solutions to reducing “problem” wildlife and their impacts. Fertility control is advocated as a non-lethal tool to manage free-living wildlife and in particular to control iconic species. Injectable immunocontraceptives, such as GonaCon, stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against the gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn affects the release of reproductive hormones in mammals. The branching fractions of the decays B+ → ηl+νl and B+ → ηl+νl are measured, where l is either an electron or a muon, using a data sample of 711 fb−1 containing 772 × 106 BB̅ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. To reduce the dependence of the result on the form factor model, the measurement is performed over the entire q2 range. The resulting branching fractions are B(B+ → η ℓ + ν ℓ)=(2.83 …

Wildfire increases the magnitude of runoff in catchments, which can lead to the degradation of ecosystems, risk to infrastructure, and loss of life. The Labor Day Fires of 2020 provided an opportunity to compare multiple large and severe wildfires with the objective of determining potential changes to hydrologic processes in Oregon Cascades watersheds. Geographic information systems (GIS) were implemented to determine the total percentage burned and percentage of high burn severity class of six watersheds on the west-slope of the Oregon Cascade Range. Abstract: Capitol Reef National Park (CRNP) is located within Southern Utah. Flash floods are one of the main hazards CRNP experiences and because of the remote location of the park, numerous parameters, and sudden nature of flash floods it is extremely difficult to collect data, predict their occurrence, and create hazard maps. Pleasant Creek (PC) is a perennial stream that runs through CRNP and, due to the highly resistant sandstone of the Waterpocket Fold, experiences flash floods. Monitoring volcanic events as they occur is a task that, to this day, requires significant human capital. The current process requires geologists to monitor seismographs around the clock, making it extremely labour-intensive and inefficient. The ability to automatically classify volcanic events as they happen in real-time would allow for quicker responses to these events by the surrounding communities. Timely knowledge of the type of event that is occurring can allow these surrounding communities to prepare or evacuate sooner depending on the magnitude of the event. Nanostructures and nanoparticles have garnered increasing interest over the past decade due to their unique properties and applications. These properties include localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and allow for surface modification. We can tune these properties depending on the nanoparticle’s size, shape, and geometry.
This work aims to fabricate plasmonic platforms through patterning gold nanoparticles (raspberries) by microcontact printing, a simple and cost-effective soft lithography technique. This is done through large-scale patterning using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamps to pattern an adhesion template and spatially guide the adsorption of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

This research focused on obtaining a brief overview of information preserved within evaporite samples formed during the Early Cambrian. With the help of halite screening methods, fluid and gas analysis, through a micro thermometer and mass spectrometer, respectively, as well as trace element analysis conducted by Act Labs, results reflecting Earth's climate over 500 million years ago were obtained. These indicated the approximate weather conditions, and atmospheric composition, during this time period, within an intracontinental dessert location. Microplastics are plastics <5 mm (Liu, 2019; Arthur et al., 2009). They are created in two ways: Intentionally or from the fragmentation of larger pieces of plastic (National Ocean Service, 2021). They can negatively impact human, wildlife and ecosystem health in many ways depending on the exposure, type, size, and shape of the microplastic (Campanale, 2020). Retention ponds are often created in neighborhoods to collect water in order to prevent flooding. They also often serve as habitat for wildlife. Sediment samples were collected in two ponds in London Ontario both dredged in 2016. Samples were processed in the lab and further analyzed under the microscope to isolate the microplastics. Results have not been determined yet, but the abundance and type of microplastic varies in both ponds. Plastic pollution in retention ponds should be considered more, as it poses a threat to human and ecosystem health.

Retention in STEM can be impacted by different psychosocial factors like sense of belonging, STEM identity, sense of community, and sense of support. The research conducted was used to design a study that will measures these psychosocial factors at the beginning and end of a first-year, general chemistry course. The research also aimed to determine the best active learning method to implement in the general chemistry course, that has over 2000 students enrolled in it, that could improve student feelings towards these psychosocial factors.

Abstract: Much of the existing research focuses on the questions teachers ask students, but there is very little information about the questions students ask. The main purpose of this research was to explore ways to engage students in asking their own questions in the learning of mathematics, and to create a scale to help educators categorize the types of questions students ask. We created and used inquiry-based, funds of knowledge-rich lessons with productive struggle opportunities to promote curiosity (Calleja, 2016) and elicit student questions to develop and test our question categorization scale.

Abstract: We perform general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to study the dynamics of and radiation from accretion onto stellar mass black holes. Recent theoretical work suggested magnetic torques exerted at the innermost stable circular orbit can drive significant bulk vertical energy transport in regions close to the black hole, and hence dissipate a larger fraction of accretion power near the photosphere compared to standard models. This additional heating in turn may lead to the non-thermal high-energy (into several hundred keVs) radiation observed in some systems.
