On Superoscillations And Supershifts In Several Variables, Yakir Aharonov, Fabrizio Colombo, Andrew N. Jordan, Irene Sabadini, Tomer Shushi, Daniele C. Struppa, Jeff Tollaksen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The aim of this paper is to study a class of superoscillatory functions in several variables, removing some restrictions on the functions that we introduced in a previous paper. Since the tools that we used with our approach are not common knowledge we will give detailed proof for the case of two variables. The results proved for superoscillatory functions in several variables can be further extended to supershifts in several variables.

Since we are living in a digital age, the need to protect ourselves and those who are vulnerable to cyber-attacks is paramount to prevent cyber attacks that steal information such as banking accounts and important sensitive information.

Our research team extensively investigated the five aspects of cybersecurity such as identity, protection, detection, and response. By conducting various interviews with cybersecurity professionals, we gathered information about these five aspects for example security intelligence or security operations and response, (thread hunting, response orchestration) identity access management, (identity management, and data protection), and risks (risk perspective). Our main goal is to look into …

Spin-Neutral Tunneling Anomalous Hall Effect, Ding-Fu Shao, Shu-Hui Zhang, Rui-Chun Xiao, Zi-An Wang, W. J. Lu, Y. P. Sun, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a fundamental spin-dependent transport property that is widely used in spintronics. It is generally expected that currents carrying net spin polarization are required to drive the AHE. Here we demonstrate that, in contrast to this common expectation, a spin-neutral tunneling AHE (TAHE), i.e. a TAHE driven by spin-neutral currents, can be realized in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) tunnel junction where an AFM electrode with a non-spin-degenerate Fermi surface and a normal metal electrode are separated by a non-magnetic barrier with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The symmetry mismatch between the AFM electrode and the SOC barrier results …

In this ever connected society, CCTVs have had a pivotal role in enforcing safety and security of the citizens by recording unlawful activities for the authorities to take actions. In a smart city context, using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) to detection violence and weaponized violence from CCTV videos will provide an additional layer of security by ensuring real-time detection around the clock. In this work, we introduced a new specialised dataset by gathering real CCTV footage of both weaponized and non-weaponized violence as well as non-violence videos from YouTube. We also proposed a novel approach in merging consecutive video …

Thioester Synthesis By A Designed Nickel Enzyme Models Prebiotic Energy Conversion, A. C. Manesis, A. Yerbulekova, Jason M. Shearer, H. S. Shafaat

Chemistry Faculty Research

The formation of carbon-carbon bonds from prebiotic precursors such as carbon dioxide represents the foundation of all primordial life processes. In extant organisms, this reaction is carried out by the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH)/acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS) enzyme, which performs the cornerstone reaction in the ancient Wood-Ljungdahl metabolic pathway to synthesize the key biological metabolite, acetylCoA. Despite its significance, a fundamental understanding of this transformation is lacking, hampering efforts to harness analogous chemistry. To address these knowledge gaps, we have designed an artificial metalloenzyme within the azurin protein scaffold as a structural, functional, and mechanistic model of ACS. We …

Shear Turbulence In The High-Wind Southern Ocean Using Direct Measurements, Laur Ferris, Carole Anne Clayson, Donglai Gong, Et Al Jul 2022

Shear Turbulence In The High-Wind Southern Ocean Using Direct Measurements, Laur Ferris, Carole Anne Clayson, Donglai Gong, Et Al

VIMS Articles

The ocean surface boundary layer is a gateway of energy transfer into the ocean. Wind-driven shear and meteorologically forced convection inject turbulent kinetic energy into the surface boundary layer, mixing the upper ocean and transforming its density structure. In the absence of direct observations or the capability to resolve sub-grid scale 3D turbulence in operational ocean models, the oceanography community relies on surface boundary layer similarity scalings (BLS) of shear and convective turbulence to represent this mixing. Despite their importance, near-surface mixing processes (and ubiquitous BLS representations of these processes) have been under-sampled in high energy forcing regimes such as …

Weak measurements of a superconducting qubit produce noisy voltage signals that are weakly correlated with the qubit state. To recover individual quantum trajectories from these noisy signals, traditional methods require slow qubit dynamics and substantial prior information in the form of calibration experiments. Monitoring rapid qubit dynamics, e.g., during quantum gates, requires more complicated methods with increased demand for prior information. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an alternative method for accurately tracking rapidly driven superconducting qubit trajectories that uses a long short-term memory (LSTM) artificial neural network with minimal prior information. Despite few training assumptions, the LSTM produces trajectories that include …

In the classic comedy Groundhog Day, protagonist Phil, played by Bill Murray, asks “What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?” In this movie, Phil is stuck reliving the same day over and over, where the events repeat in a continual loop, and nothing he does can stop them. Phil’s predicament sounds a lot like our cruel cycle with data breaches.

Every year, organizations suffer more data spills and attacks, with personal information being exposed and abused at alarming rates. While Phil …

Articles

Unique ethical, privacy and safety implications arise for people who are reliant on home-based smart technology due to health conditions or disabilities. In this paper we highlight a need for a reflective, inclusive ethical framework that encompasses the life cycle of smart home technology. We present key ethical considerations for smart home technology for older adults and people with disabilities and argue for ethical frameworks which combine these key considerations with existing models of design and development.

Phase Transitions And Resilience Of The Magnetic Dual Chiral Density Wave Phase At Finite Temperature And Density, William Gyory, Vivian De La Incera Jul 2022

Phase Transitions And Resilience Of The Magnetic Dual Chiral Density Wave Phase At Finite Temperature And Density, William Gyory, Vivian De La Incera

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the phase transitions at finite temperature and density of the magnetic dual chiral density wave (MDCDW) phase. This spatially inhomogeneous phase emerges in cold, dense QCD in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Starting from the generalized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) expansion of the free energy, we derive several analytical formulas that enable fast numerical computation of the expansion coefficients to arbitrary order, allowing high levels of precision in the determination of the physical dynamical parameters, as well as in the transition curves in the temperature vs chemical potential plane at different magnetic fields. At magnetic fields and temperatures …

Developing Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning To Support Primary Care Research And Practice, Jacqueline K. Kueper Jul 2022

Developing Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning To Support Primary Care Research And Practice, Jacqueline K. Kueper

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis was motivated by the potential to use "everyday data", especially that collected in electronic health records (EHRs) as part of healthcare delivery, to improve primary care for clients facing complex clinical and/or social situations. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can identify patterns or make predictions with these data, producing information to learn about and inform care delivery. Our first objective was to understand and critique the body of literature on AI and primary care. This was achieved through a scoping review wherein we found the field was at an early stage of maturity, primarily focused on clinical decision support …

The Role Of Nonideal Magnetohydrodynamic Effects, Gravitational Instability, And Episodic Accretion In Star-Formation, Indrani Das Jul 2022

The Role Of Nonideal Magnetohydrodynamic Effects, Gravitational Instability, And Episodic Accretion In Star-Formation, Indrani Das

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

My dissertation focuses on the effect of magnetic fields on disk and core evolution during star-formation. We investigate the fragmentation scales of gravitational instability of a rotationally-supported self-gravitating protostellar disk using linear perturbation analysis in the presence of two nonideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects: Ohmic dissipation and ambipolar diffusion. Our results show that molecular clouds exhibit a preferred lengthscale for collapse that depends on mass-to-flux ratio, magnetic diffusivities, and the Toomre-Q parameter. In addition, the influence of the magnetic field on the preferred mass for collapse leads to a modified threshold for the fragmentation mass, as opposed to a Jeans mass, …

Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa Jul 2022

Computational Models To Detect Radiation In Urban Environments: An Application Of Signal Processing Techniques And Neural Networks To Radiation Data Analysis, Jose Nicolas Gachancipa

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

Radioactive sources, such as uranium-235, are nuclides that emit ionizing radiation, and which can be used to build nuclear weapons. In public areas, the presence of a radioactive nuclide can present a risk to the population, and therefore, it is imperative that threats are identified by radiological search and response teams in a timely and effective manner. In urban environments, such as densely populated cities, radioactive sources may be more difficult to detect, since background radiation produced by surrounding objects and structures (e.g., buildings, cars) can hinder the effective detection of unnatural radioactive material. This article presents a computational model …

Complex Unicellular Microfossils From The 1.9 Ga Gunflint Chert, Canada, Ana L. González Flores Jul 2022

Complex Unicellular Microfossils From The 1.9 Ga Gunflint Chert, Canada, Ana L. González Flores

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The presence of eukaryotic life during the early Paleoproterozoic has been a matter of debate because well-preserved fossils older than 1.8 Ga rarely exhibit eukaryotic cellular microstructures. In this study, microfossils from the 1.9 Ga Gunflint Chert were studied using the extended-focal-depth imaging technique, combined with scanning electron microscopy, resulting in recognition of three types of large (10–35 μm diameter) complex unicellular bodies (CUBs) and one type of “multicellular body” (< 50 μm diameter). The CUBs show the following eukaryotic cyst-like structures: (1) radially arranged internal strands similar to those in some acritarchs and dinoflagellates; (2) regularly spaced long tubular processes, stubby pustules, and/or robust podia on the cell surface; (3) reticulate cell-wall sculpturing such as pits, ridges, and scale-like ornaments; and (4) internal bodies that may represent membrane-bounded organelles. These morphological features provide strong evidence for the presence of protists in the late Paleoproterozoic.

Among the three types of CUBs from the Gunflint microbiota, a new species, Germinosphaera gunflinta sp. nov., was recognized. This species has the diagnostic characteristics of Germinosphaera, such …

Drone-Truck Cooperated Delivery Under Time Varying Dynamics, Arindam Khanda, Federico Corò, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rapid technological developments in autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (or drones) could soon lead to their large-scale implementation in the last-mile delivery of products. However, drones have a number of problems such as limited energy budget, limited carrying capacity, etc. On the other hand, trucks have a larger carrying capacity, but they cannot reach all the places easily. Intriguingly, last-mile delivery cooperation between drones and trucks can synergistically improve delivery efficiency. In this paper, we present a drone-truck co-operated delivery framework under time-varying dynamics. Our framework minimizes the total delivery time while considering low energy consumption as the secondary objective. The …

Application Of Borehole Transient Electromagnetic Method In Detection Of Floor Failure Depth In Fully Mechanized Top Coal Caving Face, Wang Cheng, An Youxin, Zhu Hongjun, Guo Jianlei

Coal Geology & Exploration

The carboniferous-Permian No. 6 coal seam in the eastern Jungar Coalfield of Ordos Basin is an extra-thick coal seam, and the coal floor is particularly threatened by the Ordovician limestone aquifer. The mining effect will lead to the formation of the bottom mining damage zone, and new water-conducting channels may be formed, which in turn will cause sudden water disasters. Aiming at the testing problem of floor mining failure zone, the method of transient electromagnetic method in hole with moving source and receiving is proposed to obtain resistivity characteristic data of strata from floor drilling before and after mining. Firstly, …

Techniques Of Double-Pipe And Double-Acting Directional Drilling With Air In Broken And Soft Coal Seams In Underground Coal Mines, Wang Li Jul 2022

Techniques Of Double-Pipe And Double-Acting Directional Drilling With Air In Broken And Soft Coal Seams In Underground Coal Mines, Wang Li

Coal Geology & Exploration

In the broken and soft coal seam drilling, the outburst and collapse of the hole occur easily, resulting in shallow drilling depth and low rate of hole forming, which seriously restrict the efficient gas control in the broken and soft coal seam. With the rise of gas control models, such as replacing roadway with holes and progressive drainage of the broken and soft coal seam, higher requests have been put forward to the gas drainage hole. The further improvement of the drilling depth, drilling accuracy and hole forming rate of the broken and soft coal seam can meet the needs …

Radio Number Of Hamming Graphs Of Diameter 3, Jason Devito, Amanda Niedzialomski, Jennifer Warren Jul 2022

Radio Number Of Hamming Graphs Of Diameter 3, Jason Devito, Amanda Niedzialomski, Jennifer Warren

Theory and Applications of Graphs

For G a simple, connected graph, a vertex labeling f:V(G) → Z+ is called a radio labeling of G if it satisfies |f(u)-f(v)|≥ diam(G)+1-d(u,v) for all distinct vertices u,v ∈ V(G). The radio number of G is the minimal span over all radio labelings of G. If a bijective radio labeling onto {1,2,…|V(G)|} exists, G is called a radio graceful graph. We determine the radio number of all diameter 3 Hamming graphs and show that an infinite subset of them is radio graceful.

Present Study Situation Review Of Borehole Transient Electromagnetic Method, Sun Huaifeng, Zhang Yingying, Zhao Youchao, Liu Yuchao, Zhao Hualiang

Coal Geology & Exploration

In the borehole transient electromagnetic method (TEM), the receiving probe is placed in the borehole, which is different from either aerial or ground TEM. In such methods, as the probe will be closer to the detection target and far away from surface, not only stronger response signals can be observed, but also the interference of various electromagnetic signals outside the borehole can be attenuated effectively. It can meet the demand of meticulous detection with large burial, especially the detection demand of deep blind ore and water hazard. The present situation of using various methods in the study in forward modeling, …
