Coal Geology & Exploration

Deep mineral exploration is a challenge. The borehole Transient Electromagnetic Method (TEM) goes deep underground through the sensor along the borehole, and gets closer to the deep target, so as to improve the ore discovery rate and prospecting effect. TEM is widely used in deep prospecting and exploration in foreign countries, and has achieved many important results. However, in China, due to the slow development of instruments, theoretical research and interpretation technology, it is less used in practical deep prospecting. This paper introduces a typical case about the 2 000 m deep prospecting in Baiyun Gold Deposit in Qingchengzi, Liaoning …

Self-Distilled Vision Transformer For Domain Generalization, Maryam Sultana, Muzammal Naseer, Muhammad Haris Khan, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

In recent past, several domain generalization (DG) methods have been proposed, showing encouraging performance, however, almost all of them build on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). There is little to no progress on studying the DG performance of vision transformers (ViTs), which are challenging the supremacy of CNNs on standard benchmarks, often built on i.i.d assumption. This renders the real-world deployment of ViTs doubtful. In this paper, we attempt to explore ViTs towards addressing the DG problem. Similar to CNNs, ViTs also struggle in out-of-distribution scenarios and the main culprit is overfitting to source domains. Inspired by the modular architecture of …

Fast Quantitative Interpretation Of Surface-Borehole Tem Using Transient Impulse Peak Time, Zhi Qingquan, Wu Junjie, Wang Xingchun, Yang Yi, Zhang Jie, Deng Xiaohong

Coal Geology & Exploration

Due to the complex response law of the surface-borehole Transient Electromagnetic Method (TEM), qualitative analysis and semi-quantitative interpretation are the most widely used interpretation methods. However, the methods cannot obtain the resistivity parameter of the earth directly. To solve this problem, a fast quantitative interpretation method based on transient impulse peak time is proposed. Firstly, the expression of uniform half-space surface-borehole transient electromagnetic response is given, and the impulse time characteristics of surface-borehole transient electromagnetic response are analyzed. The results show that the deeper the receiving point is buried and the higher the earth conductivity is, the later the transient …

Research On Three-Component Responses Characteristics Of Axial Anisotropy Tunnel-Hole Transient Electromagnetic, Guo Jianlei, Gao Xiaowei, Hou Yanwei

Coal Geology & Exploration

Large interpretation errors may exist in exploration areas with obvious conductivity anisotropy when applying tunnel-hole transient electromagnetic method. In this paper, the control equation is built by introducing the conductivity anisotropy tensor, which allows the current density of the rectangular loop source to be added into the Maxwell equation Ampere loop theorem based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm in order to realize the loading of any current source. The control equation is discretized by the difference instead of the differential to realize the forward calculation of the tunnel-hole transient electromagnetic 3D model. Forward modeling is carried out …

Atomic Gradiometry Based On The Interference Of Microwave Optical Sidebands, Kaleb L. Campbell Jul 2022

Atomic Gradiometry Based On The Interference Of Microwave Optical Sidebands, Kaleb L. Campbell

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

We describe a novel pulsed magnetic gradiometer based on the optical interference of sidebands generated using two spatially separated alkali vapor cells. The sidebands are produced with high efficiency using parametric frequency conversion of a probe beam interacting with Rubiduim 87 atoms in a coherent superposition of magnetically sensitive hyperfine ground states. First, experimental evidence of the sideband process is described for both steady-state and pulsed operation. Then, a theoretical framework is developed that accurately models sideband generation based on density matrix formalism. The gradiometer is then constructed using two spatially separated vapor cells, and a beat-note is generated. The …

Reinforcement Actor-Critic Learning As A Rehearsal In Microrts, Shiron Manandhar Jul 2022

Reinforcement Actor-Critic Learning As A Rehearsal In Microrts, Shiron Manandhar

Master's Theses

Real-time strategy (RTS) games have provided a fertile ground for AI research with notable recent successes based on deep reinforcement learning (RL). However, RL remains a data-hungry approach featuring a high sample complexity. In this thesis, we focus on a sample complexity reduction technique called reinforcement learning as a rehearsal (RLaR), and on the RTS game of MicroRTS to formulate and evaluate it. RLaR has been formulated in the context of action-value function based RL before. Here we formulate it for a different RL framework, called actor-critic RL. We show that on the one hand the actor-critic framework allows RLaR …

Restrained Reinforcement Number In Graphs, Kazhal Haghparast, Jafar Amjadi, Mustapha Chellali, Seyed Mahmoud Sheikholeslami

Theory and Applications of Graphs

A set S of vertices is a restrained dominating set of a graph G=(V,E) if every vertex in V\ S has a neighbor in S and a neighbor in V\S. The minimum cardinality of a restrained dominating set is the restrained domination number γr(G). In this paper we initiate the study of the restrained reinforcement number rr(G) of a graph G defined as the cardinality of a smallest set of edges F ⊆ E( ‾G) for which γr(G + F) < γr(G), where ‾G denotes the complement graph of G. …

On The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of Non-Hamiltonian Graphs, Wai Chee Shiu, Richard M. Low

Theory and Applications of Graphs

Let A be a nontrivial abelian group. A connected simple graph G = (V, E) is A-antimagic if there exists an edge labeling f: E(G) → A \ {0} such that the induced vertex labeling f+: V(G) → A, defined by f+(v) = Σ {f(u,v): (u, v) ∈ E(G)}, is a one-to-one map. In this paper, we analyze the group-antimagic property for Cartesian products, hexagonal nets and theta graphs.

Metabolomics investigates global metabolic alterations associated with chemical, biological, physiological, or pathological processes. These metabolic changes are measured with various analytical platforms including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). While LC-MS methods are becoming increasingly popular in the field of metabolomics (accounting for more than 70% of published metabolomics studies to date), there are considerable benefits and advantages to NMR-based methods for metabolomic studies. In fact, according to PubMed, more than 926 papers on NMR-based metabolomics were published in 2021—the most ever published in a given year. This suggests that NMR-based metabolomics …

Analysis Of Urbanization And Climate Change Effects On Community Resilience In The Rio Grande Valley, South Texas, George Atisa, Alexis Racelis

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Disruptive development events have tested and will continue to test community resilience as people work to balance healthy living, economic growth, and environmental quality. Aspects of urbanization, if not designed and guided by healthy living strategies, convert natural areas into built environments, thus reducing the diversity of plant and animal species that are the foundation of resilience in communities. In this study, we attempted to answer the following question: What are the most effective ways to ensure that ongoing urbanization and climate change do not negatively affect ecological services and community resilience in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV)? The region …

Examining Κ, The High Frequency Spectral Decay Parameter, In Eastern Canada, Samantha M. Palmer Jul 2022

Examining Κ, The High Frequency Spectral Decay Parameter, In Eastern Canada, Samantha M. Palmer

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines the ground motion modeling parameter kappa (κ) in the stable continental region of eastern Canada. Kappa characterizes the decay of spectral amplitudes at high frequencies due to near-surface material de-amplification and is important in seismic hazard assessments. Kappa has significant economic and seismic safety implications for critical infrastructure such as nuclear power plants and dams.

To examine kappa in eastern Canada, a database of ground motions to analyze near-source ground motion characteristics is developed. The database consists of ground motion records from 3357 earthquakes of moment magnitude (M) ≥1.5 recorded within 150 km of 25 …

New Developments On The Estimability And The Estimation Of Phase-Type Actuarial Models, Cong Nie Jul 2022

New Developments On The Estimability And The Estimation Of Phase-Type Actuarial Models, Cong Nie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis studies the estimability and the estimation methods for two models based on Markov processes: the phase-type aging model (PTAM), which models the human aging process, and the discrete multivariate phase-type model (DMPTM), which can be used to model multivariate insurance claim processes.

The principal contributions of this thesis can be categorized into two areas. First, an objective measure of estimability is proposed to quantify estimability in the context of statistical models. Existing methods for assessing estimability require the subjective specification of thresholds, which potentially limits their usefulness. Unlike these methods, the proposed measure of estimability is objective. In …

Further Flattening Of A Degraded, Turbid Reef System Following A Severe Coral Bleaching Event, Andrew G. Bauman, Fraser A. Januchowski-Hartley, Aaron Teo, Peter A. Todd

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Increasing incidence of severe coral bleaching events caused by climate change is contributing to extensive coral losses, shifts in species composition and widespread declines in the physical structure of coral reef ecosystems. With these ongoing changes to coral communities and the concomitant flattening of reef structural complexity, understanding the links between coral composition and structural complexity in maintaining ecosystem functions and processes is of critical importance. Here, we document the impacts of the 2016 global-scale coral bleaching event on seven coral reefs in Singapore; a heavily degraded, turbid reef system. Using a combination of field-based surveys, we examined changes in …
