Pheasant Nesting And Vegetation Development In Dense Nesting Cover Established Under The South Dakota Pheasant Restoration Program, Emmett J. Keyser Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) nest use of dense nesting cover (DNC) established under the Pheasant Restoration Program was evaluated in Beadle, Codington, Tripp, and Walworth Counties in South Dakota from 1978 to 1981. Nest densities and success in DNC plots were compared to those found in roadsides and privately owned alfalfa (Medicago sativa) fields, pastures, and small grain fields. Vegetation density and cover development were monitored on DNC plots. Nest densities were generally greatest in DNC plots followed by roadsides and alfalfa fields. Pastures and small grain fields contained the lowest nest densities. No relationship was detected between nest success and …

Influence Of Geomorphological Origin Upon Macroinvertebrate Community Structure In Black Hills Streams, Matthew Lechner Jan 1986

Influence Of Geomorphological Origin Upon Macroinvertebrate Community Structure In Black Hills Streams, Matthew Lechner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test a stream classification system proposed for the Black Hills National Forest. Stream physiochemical characteristics and macroinvertebrate community structure were compared among three geomorphically distinct landtype associations in the Black Hills. Stepwise disciminant analysis identified five physiochemical variables, which explained 90% of the variability among landtype associations. The classificatory discriminant procedure correctly reclassified 47 of 52 stations based on the five discriminating invertebrate taxa. Each landtype association was sufficiently different in stream physiochemical characteristics to permit classification. Macroinvertebrates exhibited distributional patterns related to changes in geomorphic structure and stream order, among landtype associations. …

Some Useful Synthetic Applications Of Gold's Reagent, John T. Gupton Jan 1986

Some Useful Synthetic Applications Of Gold's Reagent, John T. Gupton

Chemistry Faculty Publications

While looking for some appropriate research projects, I had been impressed by and interested in the work of Danishefsky1 and others2 regarding the use of "Eschenmoser's salt" (1). During the course of a literature search on an industrial project, we came across an article by Gold,3 which described the preparation of a rather interesting vinylogous iminium salt (2). The name assigned to this compound was [3-(dimethylamino)-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene]dimethylammonium chloride. This terminology seemed a little cumbersome for routine discussions so we adopted the name "Gold's Reagent" for compound 2. Although the reagent had been prepared3 in 1960, very little …

Potential Geologic Hazards Near The Thistle Landslide, Utah County, Utah, United States Geological Survey Jan 1986

Potential Geologic Hazards Near The Thistle Landslide, Utah County, Utah, United States Geological Survey

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In mid-April, 1983, an old landslide near Thistle, Utah, began to move, and within days had blocked Spanish Fork Canyon. As the slide's movement continued, construction crews gradually converted the toe of the slide into an earth-filled dam--Thistle dam--that impounded northwest-flowing Spanish Fork River. The resultant reservoir, known as Thistle Lake, was subsequently drained because of uncertainty about the stability of the dam. Recently, officials of Utah County have explored various alternatives for a water-retention structure in the area, including utilization of Thistle dam. The Thistle Slide Committee, established by the State of Utah to evaluate the suitability of using …

Grazing And Management Of Saltland Shrubs, C V. Malcolm, J. E. Pol Jan 1986

Grazing And Management Of Saltland Shrubs, C V. Malcolm, J. E. Pol

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

areas of bare saltland on farms need not be unproductive etesores. Many Western Australian farmers are now successfully growing salt-tolerant or halophytic shrubs such as bluebush (Maireana brevifolia), saltbushes (Atriplex spp.) and samphires (Halosarcia spp.) on these areas.

Department of agriculture trials and farmers' experience indicate that if saltland is planted with recommended shrubs, it can provide two months' valuable grazing for sheep during autumn and early winter, a time when paddock feed is scarce. Research by the Department has also identified a range of salt-tolerant shrubs suited to the various types of saltland.

Grazing trials to …

Serradella Prospects At Esperance, Michael D A Bolland Jan 1986

Serradella Prospects At Esperance, Michael D A Bolland

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Yellow serradells is a promising introduced annual legume suitable for some of Western Australia's well drained sandy acid soils where other pasture legumes failto persist.

In the Esperance area serradella grows siccessfully on some sandy soils more than 0.5 metres deep. I develops deep roots rapidly - up to three times deeper than subterranean clover - and this is probably the main reason for its persistance.

At present only two late maturing, registered serradella cultivars are available to farmers in southern Australia. This article describes research at Esperance to delect earlier flowering cultivars for persistence in areas with less than …

Biological Control Of Parkinsonia, W M. Woods Jan 1986

Biological Control Of Parkinsonia, W M. Woods

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the most troublesome weeds in northern Australia'a lastoral country is Parkinsonia aculeata, commonly called Parkinsonia, Jerusalem Thorn, Palo Verde or Retama. In 983 Western Australia, ueensland and the Northern Territory started a joint biological control programme against this perst by sending the author overseas to search for its natural predators in southern USA, Mexico and Central America. A few insects show promise and one, a bruchid beetle Mimosetes ulkei, is being tested under Quarantine in Queensland.

Rock Phosphates : Fertilisers For Sandy Soils?, J S. Yeates, D. M. Deeley, G. T.B. Cockerton, M. F. Clarke

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Rock phosphates, from which water solubls phosphorus fertilisers such as superphosphate are manufactured, sometimes appear attractive to farmers because of their relatively low cost. But redearch has shown t6hat on most western australian soils they are not economical fertilisers. However, some deep sandy soils of the State's high rainfall area are exeptions. On these soils, rock phosphates compare favourably with superphosphate for plant growth. But how can these deep sands be identified.

This article describes research to define the soil characteristics necessary for rock phosphates and fertilisers containing rock phosphate, such as Coastal superphosphate, to be effective substitutes for superphosphate.

Agricultural Progress On The Ord, D A. Mcghie Jan 1986

Agricultural Progress On The Ord, D A. Mcghie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

This is the first of occasional articles describing the experimental and commercial activity on the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) in Western Australia's Kimberley region.

Against a background of extensive recources of land and water, a sometimes cimatic advantage and a complementary disadvantage of a remote location, agriculture on the Ord has swung from various monocultures to a broadly based and diversified production. In 1986, the value of agricultural production on the Ord will approach values equivalent to those of the cotton era for the first time since the demise of that industry 12 years ago.

An Approximate Variational Method For Improved Thermodynamics Of Molecular Fluids, M. S. Shaw, J. D. Johnson, John D. Ramshaw Jan 1986

An Approximate Variational Method For Improved Thermodynamics Of Molecular Fluids, M. S. Shaw, J. D. Johnson, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For a certain class of thermodynamic perturbation theories, a generalization of the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality holds through second order of perturbation theory and for a subset of terms the inequality is true to infinite order. Using this approximate variational principle, a perturbation theory is chosen for which the Helmholtz free energy of the reference system is minimized under the constraint that the first order term is identically zero. We apply these ideas to the determination of effective spherical potentials that accurately reproduce the thermodynamics of nonspherical molecular potentials. For a diatomic-Lennard-Jones (DLJ) potential with l ∕σ = 0.793, the resulting spherical …

Use Of Isomerizable N-Alkylmerocyanine Dyes To Robe Molecular Interactions Within Micellar Solubilization Sites, Kim Jason Dennis Jan 1986

Use Of Isomerizable N-Alkylmerocyanine Dyes To Robe Molecular Interactions Within Micellar Solubilization Sites, Kim Jason Dennis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Effects of aqueous surfactant solutions upon cis/trans isomerization reactions of various N-alkyl-merocyanine dyes (II) were studied. Dramatic rate enhancements were found for all dyes in CTAB and SDS solutions above the CMC. CTAB solutions showed the greatest effect with some dye isomerizations catalyzed in excess of 1000-fold. Increases in either CTAB concentration or dye isomerization rates. N-methyl through N-pentyl dye isomerization rates were measured as a function of CTAB concentration and the data treated according to the pseudophase model for micellar catalysis. KS values ranged from 198 to 2000 M-1 for N-methyl to N-pentyl dyes, respectively. Micellar rate …

Stratigraphy And Heavy Mineral Analysis In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, C. R. Berquist Jr Jan 1986

Stratigraphy And Heavy Mineral Analysis In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, C. R. Berquist Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Spatially continuous patterns of heavy mineral distributions in three dimensions characterized the sandy Holocene sediments of the lower Chesapeake Bay. A pilot study using Q-mode factor analysis on data from an earlier study determined mineral assemblages and mineral composition gradients; the gradients suggested that surficial sediments entered the Bay from offshore and from older deposits to the west. Principal components analysis of the same data indicated that the abundances of only 5 out of 21 minerals were adequate to explain most of the mineral variance. The mineralogy of 87 samples from cores defining two geologic cross-sections was added to the …

Native Hay Production Along A Depth-To-Water-Table Gradient In Eastern Sandhills Wet Meadows, Wheeler County, Nebraska, Jean M. Novacek

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Sandhills region of Nebraska, the largest dune field in the Western Hemisphere, occupies 15 north-central counties and extends over 51,800 km (20,000 mi) (Keech and Bentall, 1971; Ahlbrandt and Fryberger, 1980). Far from a desert, the Sandhills region is entirely vegetated by mixed-grass prairie with numerous wet areas and lakes in interdunal valleys. This rich, grass-covered dune sea stretches 427 km (265 mi) across from east to west and 209 km (130 miles) from north to south. The altitudes range from 670 m (2200 ft) above sea level in the eastern part to 1310 m (4300 ft) in the …

In Situ Growth And Chemical Composition Of The Giant Kelp, Macrocystis Pyrifera: Response To Temporal Changes In Ambient Nutrient Availability, Richard C. Zimmerman, James N. Kremer

OES Faculty Publications

Temporal variations in growth of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera were examined in relation to ambient nutrient availability and chemical composition of mature blades, the primary site of nutrient and carbohydrate storage in M. pyrifera. The effect of nutrient availability on growth was well approximated by a Monod rectangular hyperbola, with growth saturating at ambient nitrate concentra- tions between 1 and 2 FM. M. pyrlfera was unable to generate nutrient reserves that would last beyond 30 d. Nitrogen reserves were stored as free amino acids, and generally constituted about 10 % of total tissue nitrogen. Total nitrogen content was …

Sediment Processing And Selective Feeding By Pectinaria Koreni (Polychaeta: Pectinariidae), Fred C. Dobbs, Teresa A. Scholly Jan 1986

Sediment Processing And Selective Feeding By Pectinaria Koreni (Polychaeta: Pectinariidae), Fred C. Dobbs, Teresa A. Scholly

OES Faculty Publications

Pectinaria (Lagis) koreni (Malmgren) is an abundant, deposit-feeding, infaunal inhabitant of shallow-water marine environments in northern Europe. Laboratory experiments were performed to quantify the polychaete's sediment processing in 2 distinct sediments, 1 fine-grained and high in combustibles, the other coarse-grained and low in combustibles. Gut passage time and time to pseudodefecation were predictable only in coarse-grained sediment. In both sediments, reworking rate increased with worm size and over time, although temporal patterns differed in the 2 sediments. The ratio of pseudodefecated sediment to defecated sediment did not differ significantly over time in either sediment, but the ratio was greater in …

On The Linear Relation Between Mb And Ms For Discrimination Between Explosions And Earthquakes, Ali A. Nowroozi Jan 1986

On The Linear Relation Between Mb And Ms For Discrimination Between Explosions And Earthquakes, Ali A. Nowroozi

OES Faculty Publications

Summary. The statistical capability of the mb :Ms, discriminant for the discrimination of earthquake and explosion populations is examined by application of discriminant functions to a group of 83 explosions and 72 earthquakes in Eurasia. Equations are derived for the probability that an event is an earthquake or an explosion. The positive sign of DIS in the decision index equation,

DIS, = 34.3383 - 11.9569 mbi, + 7.1 161 Msi,

indicates that the event i is an earthquake. Its negative sign indicates that event i is an explosion. The probability of …

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer Jan 1986

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Recent theoretical developments in the theory of inhomogeneous media have enabled Physicists to explore various properties of random composites. We demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to the treatment of electrochemical systems, specifically porous structures. A Random Network Model is introduced to represent the porous electrode immersed in electrolyte, and using numerical simulation the a.c. impedance behavior of the system is explored. We explore how various compositional and structural parameters contribute to the electrical properties of the system. The topology of our model is analyzed, and the effect of fractal structures on impedance behavior is considered. To examine the …
