The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier
The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Alum jar tests were performed on raw portable waters of varying TOC. Parameters monitored include alum dose, pH and mixing conditions. Finished waters were analyzed for residual aluminum, residual TOC and hardness in order to investigate the effects of TOC on aluminum residual as would be encountered by alum coagulation and lime softening process in practice.
Three-dimensional graphs of residual aluminum, residual TOC and pH were constructed to illustrate the relationship among these measured parameters for the different sources. Statistical analyses were conducted to verify aluminum-organic complexation at reduced alum dosages for varying TOCs; initial TOC, reaction pH and dose …
Resonant Charge Transfer In Symmetric Alkali-Ion Alkali-Atom Collisions, F. K. Men, M. Kimura, Ronald E. Olson
Resonant Charge Transfer In Symmetric Alkali-Ion Alkali-Atom Collisions, F. K. Men, M. Kimura, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Resonant charge transfer in alkali-ion alkali-atom collisions is investigated by using the molecular-orbital expansion method incorporating the use of electron translation factors. Molecular wave functions and eigen energies are obtained by the pseudopotential method. Molecular properties, Re, De, and e, obtained in the present calculation are in good accord with other recent theoretical results, as well as spectroscopic measurements. Three-state close-coupling calculations reproduce the positions of the maxima and minima in the oscillatory structure seen experimentally in the resonant-charge-transfer cross sections for the Li2 + and Cs2 + systems. The magnitude of the total cross sections and their velocity dependence …

General Features Of The Aerosol Observed In The Guinean Savannah At The Level Of The Itcz Influence Of The Drought, F. Désalmand, R. Serpolay, Josef Podzimek
General Features Of The Aerosol Observed In The Guinean Savannah At The Level Of The Itcz Influence Of The Drought, F. Désalmand, R. Serpolay, Josef Podzimek
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The stagnation and mixing of various air masses at the level of the ITCZ in the dry season, together with the absence of rain, favor, in the Guinean savannah, the formation of a well-aged and homogeneous aerosol made up of very active mixed nuclei. When the drought increases, the aerosol always remains an aged one, i.e. absence of particles with radius r < 0.02 μm, no nucleation mode. However, different properties show a younger and less homogeneous aerosol, i.e. very high counts in all the categories of particles (the concentration of nuclei activated at the supersaturation S {reversed tilde equals} 0.32% reaches 9960 cm-3), poor correlations between the concentrations of various groups of particles and no fog. When the fires are frequent and spread all over the savannah, a permanent addition of new particles to the local background aerosol (due to a complicated circulation) prevents the ageing of the aerosol that is observed during the usual drought with a moderate extension of bushfires. © 1986.

The purpose of this report is to provide NASA with a rationale and recommendations for planning, implementing, and operating an Earth Observing System data and information system that can evolve to meet the Earth Observing System's needs in the 1990s. The Earth Observing System (EOS), defined by the EOS Science and Mission Requirements Working Group, consists of a suite of instruments in low Earth orbit acquiring measurements of the Earth's atmosphere, surface, and interior; an information system to support scientific research; and a vigorous program of scientific research, stressing study of global-scale processes that shape and influence the Earth as …
Anomalous Concentrations Of Co-58 And Cs-137 In Dardanelle Reservoir, David M. Chittenden Ii
Anomalous Concentrations Of Co-58 And Cs-137 In Dardanelle Reservoir, David M. Chittenden Ii
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The unforseen occurrence of significant concentrations of Co-58 and Cs-1 37 in a quiescent backwater of Dardanelle Reservoir provided an opportunity to observe the equilibrium distribution of Cs-1 37 between solution and suspended solids. This equilibrium has not been observed in other areas of the reservoir because small amounts of this nuclide are regularly injected into the lake by the AP&L Nuclear I facility. The systematics of the Co-58 concentration lead to the conclusion that significant amounts of these two nuclides had been injected into the sampling area from a source unknown.
Low-Energy Collisions Of Alkali-Metal Anions, David M. Scott
Low-Energy Collisions Of Alkali-Metal Anions, David M. Scott
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Measurements of the total cross section for electron detachment, (sigma)(,e)(E), are presented for low-energy (E(,1ab) < 300 eV) collisions of Na('-), K('-), and Cs('-) with atomic and molecular targets. For many of the atomic (rare-gas) targets, the energy dependence of (sigma)(,e)(E) is striking: virtually no detachment is observed until relatively high collision energies (50 eV in the center-of-mass frame) are reached, in contradistinction to what has been observed for similar collisions involving H('-). The thresholds for alkali anion detachment are approximately equal to the thresholds for excitation observed in collisions of neutral alkali atoms with these same targets. The similarity between the dynamics of the neutral system and that of the negative ion system, together with the observation (at greater energies) of detachment accompanied by excitation of the alkali parent, suggests that electron detachment may be mediated by a two-electron process in some cases. A simple curve-crossing mechanism adequately reproduces the observed (sigma)(,e)(E) for several of these rare-gas targets.;Measurements of both (sigma)(,e)(E) and the cross section for charge transfer (sigma)(,i)(E) have also been completed for H(,2), D(,2), N(,2), O(,2), CO, CO(,2), SO(,2), N(,2)O, CH(,4), and SF(,6) targets. Electron detachment is the dominant process for all of these targets except O(,2), SO(,2), and SF(,6), with thresholds on the order of a few eV. Structure in (sigma)(,e)(E) for the CO(,2) target has been attributed to charge transfer to a metastable state of CO(,2)('-)(('2)A(,1)). Similarly, in the case of N(,2)O, both (sigma)(,e)(E) and (sigma)(,i)(E) exhibit behavior which suggests that a temporary negative ion state is formed during the collision. In the case of the O(,2), SO(,2), and SF(,6) targets, charge transfer is observed to have particularly large cross sections (>100 (ANGSTROM)('2)) at low collision energies.

A non-aqueous lamellar liquid crystal of sodium dodecyl sulfate, decanol and glycerol was prepared and compared with its aqueous counterpart. The results show that the stability of the liquid crystal with glycerol is critically dependent on the surfactant/alcohol ratio, whereas the liquid cry. The interlayer spacing was smaller for the glycerol system than for the water system at finite amount of solvent, but the value extrapolated to zero so. © 1986.

Foam stability was related to phase behavior in a foamed three-phase region consisting of an aqueous solution (L1), an alcohol solution (L2) and lamellar liquid-crystalline (LC) phases in the C8H17SO3Na/C8H17OH/H2O system. The state of the system before foaming was LC/L2 + LC/L1 or L1 + L2/LC type emulsions up to a high octanol/water ratio of 77/23. In L2 + LC/L1 emulsion, the LC droplets exist separately from the alcohol droplets in an aqueous continuous medium. The viscosity of the system was enhanced with an increase in the content of dispersed phases, i.e. alcohol and/or liquid crystal phases contributing to the …

Deuterium NMR quadrupole splitting's of deuterated benzene and water were studied as a function of their composition in the aqueous lamellar phase of Penta ethylene glycol n-dodecyl ether. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of hydration changes of the poly(oxyethylene) chains related to changes in the benzene solvation and location within the head-group region. © 1986, American Chemical Society. The mechanism of the hydro trope action of a dicarboxylic acid Mono soap was investigated by determination of the change in order parameter of the amphiphile in a lamellar liquid crystal. The results showed addition of the hydro trope considerably to reduce the order while addition of a surfactant had no effect. © 1986.

Microemulsions With High Water Solubilizing Capacity At High Hydrocarbon Levels And Very Low Surfactant Concentrations, Raymond L. Venable, Kay Lynn Elders, Jiafu Fang

Phase diagrams have been determined showing the extent of the inverse micellar or microemulsion region for systems consisting of water-surfactant-cosurfactant or water-surfactant-hydrocarbon cosurfactant mixture with three surfactants and four cosurfactants. The surfactants are sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium laurate, and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide while the cosurfactants are pentanol, hexanol, pentylamine, and hexylamine. Hexylamine is found to be a very effective cosurfactant giving rise to very good water solubilizing capacity at extremely low surfactant concentrations and very low cosurfactant levels at rather high initial hydrocarbon levels. © 1986.

Stability Of Hydrophobic Foams, Stig Friberg, Irena Blute, Hironobu Kunieda, Per Stenius
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The stability of foams was determined in two-phase regions containing an isotropic hydrocarbon solution and a lamellar liquid crystal. The lamellar liquid crystal showed surface activity with regard to the hydrocarbon solution. This was interpreted as due to the higher frequency of methyl groups at the surface of the liquid-crystalline state compared to the liquid state. The weaker intermolecular forces from the methyl groups were assumed to result in a lower surface tension of the liquid crystal in comparison to the liquid. This hypothesis was tested by the use of a low surface tension hydrocarbon, isooctane. No foam stability was …
Influence Of Geometric Factors Of The Substrate On Hydrophilic Surface Modification Of Polyurethane Sponges By Plasma Treatment, D. L. Cho, H. Yasuda
Influence Of Geometric Factors Of The Substrate On Hydrophilic Surface Modification Of Polyurethane Sponges By Plasma Treatment, D. L. Cho, H. Yasuda
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The surface modification by plasma treatment occurs by consecutive processes of excitation of gas(es) and deexcitation of excited species. The deexcitation occurs primarily at the surface yielding chemical modification of the surface (nonpolymer-forming plasmas) or deposition of material (polymer-forming plasma) on the substrate surface. Because of this sequence, geometric factors of the substrate in relation to the surrounding plasma phase have crucial influence on the effectiveness of plasma treatments. Simple mathematical models were developed to illustrate the effect of geometric factors involved in plasma treatments, and experimental results obtained with porous polyurethane sponges in various sizes were examined by the …

Ab initio calculations at the SCF and correlated levels are carried out to characterize the potential energy surface of the NH3 dimer. The two basis sets used are 4‐31G∗ and a larger one containing two sets of d‐functions on N centers, 6‐31G∗∗ (1p, 2d). The only minimum occurring on the surface is a cyclic C2h structure in which the two H‐bonding protons are displaced 42° from the N‐‐N axis. The surface contains a very shallow valley along the direction leading from this geometry to a single linear H bond although …

We have investigated the CW laser properties of Nd-doped yttrium-aluminum-perovskite (YAP) in a Kr are-lamp, pumped cavity, Seven laser transitions within the 4F3/2-4I11/2 multiplet have been observed. A simple Lyot filter is used to select the particular transitions. The tuning characteristics of the transitions at 1.0745 and 1.0845 μm were also obtained with the addition of a thin, uncoated etalon within the cavity. Tuning widths of 32 and 23 Å, respectively, were obtained. Copyright © 1986 IEEE

We have investigated the CW laser properties of the lanthamide hexa-aluminate La0.9Nd0.1MgAl11O19 at room temperature. When a I cm long crystal is pumped by an Ar+ laser (514 nm) or a Kr+ laser (752 nm), CW emission is obtained with slope efficiencies of 10 and 26 percent, respectively. A four-plate Lyot filter in the cavity forces the LNA crystal to oscillate in either of the two major bands centered at 10 820 A (tuning range 80 A) and 10 545 A (tuning range 35 Å). Deuteron Zeeman Relaxation Of Cd4 In The Isotropic Liquid, The Liquid Crystalline, And The Solid State Of Several Substances, Peter A. Beckmann, Myer Bloom, E. Elliott Burnell
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
Measurement of deuteron Zeeman relaxation rates of CD4 dissolved in benzene, hexane, and the liquid crystals MBBA, EBBA, and Merck ZLI‐1132 and in pure CD4 gas as a function of temperature at 30.7 and 61.4 MHz shows that the CD4 is uniformly dispersed in the liquid solvents but resides in gas pockets when the solvents are in the solid state. Effects of centrifugal distortion were observed in the gas phase. The relaxation rate was found to be nearly independent of solvent, temperature, and pressure for the methane–liquid mixtures. This result is explained in terms of the extended …
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Relaxation In Molecular Solids Containing Isopropyl Groups. Part 2—The Large Two-Phase Temperature Region In 1,4-Di-Isopropylbenzene, Peter A. Beckmann
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
We report a proton n.m.r. study of the large, long-lived two-phase temperature region in 1,4-di-isopropylbenzene (DIB). The proton spectra are characterized by a narrow line superimposed on a 42 kHz broad line. The narrow line shows the chemical shift structure of DIB. When the sample is in the solid state the narrow lines are sharp (<30 Hz) near the melting point of 256 K and they broaden to ca.1.5 kHz at ca. 170 K where they disappear. A variety of selective and non-selective Zeeman relaxation experiments as well as a Goldman–Shen exchange experiment were performed. It is concluded that the two sets of spins do not communicate on any timescale shorter …30>

A Prime Strongly Positive Amphicheiral Knot Which Is Not Slice, Erica Flapan
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
We begin by giving several definitions. A knot K in S3 is said to be amphicheiral if there is an orientation-reversing diffeomorphism h of S3 which leaves K setwise invariant. Suppose, in addition, that K is given an orientation. ThenK is said to be positive amphicheiral if h preserves the orientation of K. If, in addition, the diffeomorphism h is an involution then K is strongly positive amphicheiral. Finally, we say a knot is slice if it bounds a smooth disc in B4. In this note we shall give a smooth example of …
