A Practical, Distributed Environment For Macintosh Software Development, Mark Sherman, Ann Marks, Rob Collins, Heather Anderson, Jerry Godes, Denis Devlin, Leonid Spector, Vivian Sewelson

Computer Science Technical Reports

We describe a development environment we created for prototyping software for the Macintosh. The programs are developed and executed on a large time-shared computer but can use the full facilities of the Macintosh. By using this system, we combine the advantages of the large system, such as large amounts of disk storage and automatic file backups, with the advantages of the Macintosh, such as advanced graphics, mouse control and sound synthesis. We also describe several projects that used the distributed development system. We conclude with a description of our future plans for this environment.

A Distributed Strategy For Resource Allocation, Ann Kratzer Jan 1986

A Distributed Strategy For Resource Allocation, Ann Kratzer

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we present a decentralized algorithm for determining how resources should be allocated to sites. This algorithm is general in the sense that it can be used for allocating different kinds of resources. This algorithm can be applied either statically, used on a quiescent system, or used dynamically as the system runs. Throughout, we consider only systems in which a resource has a fixed cost associated with it regardless of where it may be located (i.e. the system is homogeneous).

Task Queues: A General Model For The Implementation Of Communications Protocols, Ann Kratzer Jan 1986

Task Queues: A General Model For The Implementation Of Communications Protocols, Ann Kratzer

Computer Science Technical Reports

When any computer communications network is built, its communications protocol must always be implemented. The protocol is implementetd on the switching nodes of the network. The node software must respond in real time to events generated external to the switching node. Thus, the software running on a switching node constitutes a concurrent program; this complicates the design, implementation and testing of the switching node software. The task queue model presented in this paper defines a structure for this software that facilitates the design, implementation and testing of communications protocols.

An Algorithm For Resource Allocation Requiring Low Overhead Communication, Ann Marks Jan 1986

An Algorithm For Resource Allocation Requiring Low Overhead Communication, Ann Marks

Computer Science Technical Reports

A heuristic algorithm for allocating resource units to sites in a distributed system is presented. Starting with a given allocation of sites, the algorithm performs a series of optimizations involving pairs of sites in an attempt to improve the worst pair-wise imbalance present in the system; termination occurs when no further improvement is possible. After outlining the general form of the algorithm, which effectively defines an entire family of algorithms, we present theoretical results that speak to the performance of the algorithm as measured in the number of optimizations that can be done, the amount of control communication required and …

Producing Software Using Tools In A Workstation Environment, Mark Sherman, Robert L. Scot Drysdale Jan 1986

Producing Software Using Tools In A Workstation Environment, Mark Sherman, Robert L. Scot Drysdale

Computer Science Technical Reports

We discuss how we taught students to build and use translation, interpretive, editing and monitoring tools in an undergraduate software engineering course. Students used the tools on low-cost workstations (Macintoshes) to build large, group projects. The students' projects used all available features of workstation environments, including graphics, windows, fonts, mice, networks, and sound generators. We found that 1) the use of tools increased student productivity, 2) a shift in a data structure and algorithm topics is needed to cover material relevant for workstation environments, 3) new topics in system design are required for a workstation environment, 4) traditional material can …

Origin And Stratigraphy Of Holocene Sediments, Souris And Des Lacs Glacial-Lake Spillways, North-Central North Dakota, William M. Boettger Jan 1986

Origin And Stratigraphy Of Holocene Sediments, Souris And Des Lacs Glacial-Lake Spillways, North-Central North Dakota, William M. Boettger

Theses and Dissertations

In the past few years, a new interpretation of the formation of the Souris and Des Lacs glacial-lake spillways has been proposed. Now, based on geomorphological evidence, it is concluded that the Souris and Des Lacs Valleys were formed by massive glacial-lake outburst floods at the end of the late Wisconsinan deglaciation. Five phases of drainage have been recognized with the first forming the Des Lacs Valley and the other four associated with drainage in the Souris Valley from different proglacial lakes in Canada. The last of these floods down the Souris Valley was the most erosive.

This study is …

Net Shore-Drift Along The Strait Of Juan De Fuca Coast Of Clallam County, Washington, Steven C. (Steven Craig) Bubnick Jan 1986

Net Shore-Drift Along The Strait Of Juan De Fuca Coast Of Clallam County, Washington, Steven C. (Steven Craig) Bubnick

WWU Graduate School Collection

Net shore-drift along the north coast of Clallam County, Washington, was determined by using geomorphic and sedimentologic indicators. These indicators include changes in bluff morphology, delta plan form, beach width and slope, sediment size gradation, direction of stream mouth diversion, spit growth, deposition and erosion at drift obstructions, identifiable sediment, relict beach ridges, and imbricated beach sediment.

Irregularities in the coastline have caused the shore drift to become divided into drift cells, each displaying zones of supply, transportation, and accumulation. Drift direction determinations were made through field observations of the indicators, supplemented by the study of photographs, topographic maps, and …

Structure And Petrology Of The Deer Peaks Area Western North Cascades, Washington, Gregory Joseph Reller Jan 1986

Structure And Petrology Of The Deer Peaks Area Western North Cascades, Washington, Gregory Joseph Reller

WWU Graduate School Collection

Dominant bedrock units of the Deer Peaks area, northwestern Washington, include the Shuksan Metamorphic Suite, the Deer Peaks unit, the Chuckanut Formation, the Oso volcanic rocks and the Granite Lake Stock. Rocks of the Shuksan Metamorphic Suite (SMS) exhibit a stratigraphy of meta-basalt, iron/manganese schist, and carbonaceous phyllite. The shear sense of stretching lineations in the SMS indicates that during high pressure metamorphism the subduction zone dipped to the northeast relative to the present position of the rocks. Exposures of the SMS along Coal Mountain are consistent with interpretation of folding as an isoclinal anticline though discrimination between an F …

The Physics Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Worth D. Nowlin, John M. Klinck Jan 1986

The Physics Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Worth D. Nowlin, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

A region of transition of surface water characteristics from subantarctic to Antarctic and an associated eastward flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) have long been recognized to exist as a band around Antarctica. In this review we summarize the most important observational and theoretical findings of the past decade regarding the ACC, identify gaps in our knowledge, and recommend studies to address these. The nature of the meridional zonation of the ACC is only now being revealed. The ACC seems to exist as multiple narrow jets imbedded in, or associated with, density fronts (the Subantarctic and Polar fronts) which appear to …

Determination Of The Vacancy Migration Energy Of Aluminum By Nmr, Terry William Gullion Jan 1986

Determination Of The Vacancy Migration Energy Of Aluminum By Nmr, Terry William Gullion

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Monovacancy diffusion is a thermally activated process characterized by an activation energy E(,d). The diffusion of atoms requires the formation and migration of vacancies. The concentration of vacancies n/N is given by n/N (DBLTURN) exp(-E(,f)/kT). It can be shown that the activation energy E(,d) is the sum of the energy to form a vacancy E(,f) and the energy required for an atomic jump E(,m): E(,d) = E(,f) + E(,m). Furthermore, the atomic jump rate (omega)(,j) can be shown to be thermally activated and given by (omega)(,j) (DBLTURN) (nu)(,o)(n/N)exp(-E(,m)/kT) ((nu)(,o) is the attempt frequency).;NMR offers many techniques to measure the activation …

Tutorials For Software : A Comparison Of The Appleworks Software Tutorial With Pre-Entered Data And An Experimental Tutorial With User Entered Data, Toni L. Steil

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The attention directed toward computer software research has been sparse which is quite evident in particular facets such as learning methods, specifically towards tutorials. Some authors have identified various important issues which include cognitive factors, reduction of presentation of superfluous information, and the importance of interaction with software and hardware. The present . study examined two tutorials which were similar except in their level of required user behaviors. Tutorial A required only user manipulation of disk stored data. Tutorial B required the user to enter the data into the computer, design the screen format, and then to manipulate it. It …

Origination Of Stone Forests In China, Lin Hua Song Jan 1986

Origination Of Stone Forests In China, Lin Hua Song

International Journal of Speleology

The stone forests are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical climatic areas. The stone forests may be divided into hilltop stone forest, hill slope stone forest and the stone forest in the depressions or valleys. The conditions for stone forest development should be (1) thick and pure limestone, (2) gentle dipping of limestone formation, generally less than 15°, (3) a lot of vertical joint and fissure networks, (4) the soil covering on the limestone surface inhomogeneous, thick in the fissures and thin on the rock top surface, and (5) the soil should be wet and contain rich organic materials …

The Speleogenetic Role Of Air Flow Caused By Convection. 1st Contribution, Arrigo A. Cigna, Paolo Forti Jan 1986

The Speleogenetic Role Of Air Flow Caused By Convection. 1st Contribution, Arrigo A. Cigna, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

In the past some authors described the speleogenetic role of convection in phreatic conditions. Similar effects exist also in the air-filled part of vadose passages of caves as a consequence of an air circulation due to a relevant temperature gradient; the effects can be enhanced by the presence of some acids as, e.g., H2S, H2SO4, etc. In this paper the conditions matching convection and condensation which produce typical forms, very similar to those found under phreatic conditions, are discussed both for limestone and gypsum caves.

Evidence For Karstic Mechanisms Involved In The Evolution Of Moroccan Hamadas, Vittorio Castellani, Walter Dragoni Jan 1986

Evidence For Karstic Mechanisms Involved In The Evolution Of Moroccan Hamadas, Vittorio Castellani, Walter Dragoni

International Journal of Speleology

Underground tubular karst features, observed in an arid envinronment of southern Morocco, are described. On the basis of various evidences, it is suggested that such features were originated mainly by condensation water. A computation of the time necessary for their formation supports this hypothesis.

A new specimen from the Middle Eocene Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation in northeastern Utah shows a twig with several leaves of Populus wilmattae Crockrell and a fruiting raceme attache. This specimen establishes for the first time the type of fruits borne by P. wilmattae and provides additional characters with which to assess its taxonomic and evolutionary status. An associated seed shows attached placental hairs like those of extant species of Populus. The Green River fossil differs from extant Populus species in having basically palmate leaf venation and in bearing its fruiting axis on a young twig. …

Use Of Cave-Maps For Tectonic Surveys, Franz Jaskolla, Peter Volk Jan 1986

Use Of Cave-Maps For Tectonic Surveys, Franz Jaskolla, Peter Volk

International Journal of Speleology

Results of the author’s investigations show the useful application of cave-map-data for tectonic assessment. Considering speleological features, cave genesis, and structural differences, it is possible to select of the cave map’s pattern various jointing and stress systems. By 7 selected cave maps, representing areas of different tectonic history (W-Germany, Austria and Switzerland) it will be demonstrated that three types of kinematic joint-systems can be identified (fundamental, orthogonal- fold- and shear-system). Therefore, tectonic models are expected to become more valuable. It must be stated that future tectonic investigations in karst-areas should include the additional use of cave maps.
