Modeling Of Overland Flow By The Diffusion Wave Approach, Rao S. Govindaraju, S. E. Jones, M. L. Kavvas Aug 1985

Modeling Of Overland Flow By The Diffusion Wave Approach, Rao S. Govindaraju, S. E. Jones, M. L. Kavvas

KWRRI Research Reports

One of the major issues of present times, i.e. water quality degradation and a need for precise answers to transport of pollutants by overland flow, is addressed with special reference to the evaporator pits located adjacent to streams in the oil-producing regions of Eastern Kentucky. The practical shortcomings of the state-of-the-art kinematic wave are discussed and a new mathematical modeling-approach for overland flows using the more comprehensive diffusion wave is attempted as the first step in solving this problem. A Fourier series representation of the solution to the diffusion wave is adopted and found to perform well. The physically justified …

Interaction Of The Zonalwinds With The Equatorial Midnight Pressure Bulge In The Earth's Thermosphere: Empiricalevidence Of Momentum Balance, F. A. Herrero, H. G. Mayr, N. W. Spencer, A. E. Hedin, Bela G. Fejer Aug 1985

Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

A minimum is observed at midnight in the time variation of averaged zonal winds measured in-situ near the equator at an average altitude of about 350 km, and we inquire whether observations of the equatorial midnight pressure bulge are consistent with this feature. The observed zonal wind maintains an eastward direction all night. It increases steadily in the early evening reaching a maximum of about 160 m/s at 2100 hrs local time (LT), dropping to a minimum of about 70 m/s around 2400 LT, then up to about 120 m/s around 0300 LT, decreasing thereafter and turning westward in the …

A Parallel Branch And Bound Algorithm For Integer Linear Programming Models, Rochelle L. Boehning, Billy E. Gillett

Computer Science Technical Reports

A parallel branch and bound algorithm is developed for use with MIMD computers to study the efficiency of parallel processors on general integer linear programming problems. The Haldi and IBM test problems and a System Design model are used in the implementation of the algorithm. Initially the algorithm solves the Haldi and IBM test problems on a single processor computer which simulates a multiple processor computer. The algorithm is then implemented on the Denelcor HEP multiprocessor using two of the IBM problems to compare the results of the simulation to the results using an MIMD computer. Finally the algorithm is …

Predicting Success In High School Computer Programming, John C. Gevedon Jul 1985

Predicting Success In High School Computer Programming, John C. Gevedon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are great differences in performance among students taking high school programming courses, and instructors debate over what elements contribute to these differences. Some students develop logical thinking abilities and problem solving techniques, while others fail to develop skills beyond memorization of specific terms and procedures. It is not known whether these differences are causally related to the specific educational environment or student backgrounds. Without more information, the factors that actually contribute to the success of high school students in computer programming courses cannot be accurately determined. It was the purpose of this study then to isolate certain student characteristics …

Micronutrients In Kentucky, William O. Thom Jul 1985

Micronutrients In Kentucky, William O. Thom

Soil Science News and Views

Micronutrients required for normal plant development and fruiting include boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. Unlike the macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S), the quantities of micronutrients needed by agronomic crops is very small. Kentucky soils may contain large amounts of micronutrients in their mineral composition but only small amounts may be available for plant uptake. The soil availability and crop uptake of micronutrients are influenced by soil pH, soil temperatures, crop root growth, soil moisture, crop species and soil organic matter content.

Studies Of Silicon-Phosphorus Bonding, Kenneth J. Dykema, Thanh N. Truong, Mark S. Gordon Jul 1985

Studies Of Silicon-Phosphorus Bonding, Kenneth J. Dykema, Thanh N. Truong, Mark S. Gordon

Mark S. Gordon

Ab initio calculations are presented for several species containing a silicon-phosphorus bond. The types of bonding studied include "normal" single, double, and triple bonds, as well as an ylide-like structure. The latter is found to be much less strongly bound than the carbon analogue, with a smaller stretching force constant than that in silylphosphine. The insertions of silylene into the phosphine bond and of phosphinosilylene into H2 are discussed, with the former being illustrated using localized molecular orbitals along the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC). Silylene to silene isomerizations in both the closed-shell singlet and the lowest triplet states of SiPH3 …

A Theoretical Study Of Fluorine Atom And Fluoride Ion Attack On Methane And Silane, Larry P. Davis, Larry W. Burggraf, Mark S. Gordon, Kim K. Baldridge Jul 1985

A Theoretical Study Of Fluorine Atom And Fluoride Ion Attack On Methane And Silane, Larry P. Davis, Larry W. Burggraf, Mark S. Gordon, Kim K. Baldridge

Mark S. Gordon

We have performed MNDO and ab initio calculations for reactions of fluorine atom attack on methane and silane and, in addition, fluoride ion attack on the same molecules in the case of MNDO. We modeled both substitution and abstraction reactions in each case. Results were compared with experimental data, where available. Comparisons show that MNDO usually does as well as the ab initio methods in reproducing experimental values for D.E's of these reactions, but MNDO predicts activation barriers too high in most cases. Nevertheless, MNDO does qualitatively agree with the ab initio result that, while carbon undergoes abstraction much more …

On The Regularity Of The Critical Point Infinity Of Definitizable Operators, Branko Ćurgus Jul 1985

On The Regularity Of The Critical Point Infinity Of Definitizable Operators, Branko Ćurgus

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this note necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of the critical point infinity of a definitizable operator A are given. Using these criteria it is proved that the regularity of the critical point infinity is preserved under some additive perturbations as well as for some operators which are related to A. Applications to indefinite Sturm-Liouville problems are indicated.

A Generalized Molien Function For Field Theoretical Hamiltonians, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch Jul 1985

A Generalized Molien Function For Field Theoretical Hamiltonians, Jeffrey W. Felix, Dorian M. Hatch

Faculty Publications

A generating function, or Molien function, the coefficients of which give the number of independent polynomial invariants in G, has been useful in the Landau and renormalization group theories of phase transitions. Here a generalized Molien function for a field theoretical Hamiltonian (with short-range interactions) of the most general form invariant in a group G is derived. This form is useful for more general renormalization group calculations. Its Taylor series is calculated to low order for the FGamma-2 representation of the space group R[3 bar]c and also for the l=1 (faithful) representation of SO(3).

Angle-Resolved Photoemission From Bromine Chemisorbed On Ni(100), Peter A. Dowben, Y. Sakisaka, T.N. Rhodin

Peter Dowben Publications

Molecular bromine dissociatively adsorbs to form a chemisorbed overlayer on Ni(100). The bromine induced 4px,y and 4pz orbitals have been identified at Γ̅ with binding energies of 6.6 ± 0.2 eV and 5.3 ± 0.2 eV below the Fermi energy, respectively. The relative ionization cross-section variations of the two bromine levels 4px and 4pz are observed to differ with changing photon energy.

The Frontal Hydraulic Head: A Micro-Α Scale (~1 Km) Triggering Mechanism For Mesoconvective Weather Systems, M. A. Shapiro, Tamara Hampel, Doris Rotzoll, F. Mosher

Publications

Measurements from the NOAA Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) 300 m tower, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Sabreliner aircraft, and the NOAA GOES-5 satellite, give evidence for the cross-front scale collapse of nonprecipitating surface cold-frontal zones to horizontal distances of ∼1 km or less. The leading edges of these frosts possess the characteristic structure of density current flows: an elevated hydraulic head followed by a turbulent wake. Vertical motions at the frontal heads exceed 5 m s−1 at 300 m (AGL). The ascent at the frontal head may act as a (∼1 km-scale) triggering mechanism for the release of …

Identification Of Soil-Water Chemical Parameters For The Prediction And Treatment Of Suspended Solids In Surface Water Reservoirs Of Coal Mine Lands, V. P. Evangelou, J. H. Grove, R. I. Barnhisel Jul 1985

Identification Of Soil-Water Chemical Parameters For The Prediction And Treatment Of Suspended Solids In Surface Water Reservoirs Of Coal Mine Lands, V. P. Evangelou, J. H. Grove, R. I. Barnhisel

KWRRI Research Reports

High concentrations of suspended solids in coal mine sedimentation ponds are a factor in lowering water quality. Colloidal particle settling simulations were carried out in the laboratory to test the influence pH and dissolved solids have on concentration and settling rates of suspended solids. The results of the study reveal that the pH range of colloidal coflocculation for the samples tested is between 3.5 and 4.5. Furthermore, liming simulation of acidic sediments, as expected increased colloid dispersion. This increase was dependent on the magnitude of the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). The greater SAR systems maintained a greater concentration of colloidal …

Incident Beam Polarization For Laser Doppler Velocimetry Employing A Sapphire Cylindrical Window, James A. Lock, Harold J. Schock Jul 1985

Incident Beam Polarization For Laser Doppler Velocimetry Employing A Sapphire Cylindrical Window, James A. Lock, Harold J. Schock

Physics Faculty Publications

For laser Doppler velocimetry studies employing sapphire windows as optical access ports, the birefringency of sapphire produces an extra beam intersection volume which serves to effectively smear the acquired velocity flow field data. It is shown that for a cylindrical window geometry, the extra beam intersection volume may be eliminated with minimal decrease in the fringe visibility of the remaining intersection volume by suitably orienting the polarizations of the initial laser beams. For horizontally incident beams, these polarizations were measured at three intersection locations within the cylinder. It was found that the measured polarization angles agreed with the theoretical predictions.

Algebraic Grid Generation Using Tensor Product B-Splines, Bonita Valerie Saunders Jul 1985

Algebraic Grid Generation Using Tensor Product B-Splines, Bonita Valerie Saunders

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In general, finite difference methods are more successful if the accompanying grid has lines which are smooth and nearly orthogonal. This thesis discusses the development of an algorithm which produces such a grid when given the boundary description.

Topological considerations in structuring the grid generation mapping are discussed. In particular, this thesis examines the concept of the degree of a mapping and how it can be used to determine what requirements are necessary if a mapping is to produce a suitable grid.

The grid generation algorithm uses a mapping composed of bicubic B-splines. Boundary coefficients are chosen so that the …
