Determination Of The Equilibrium Constant For The Acetaldehyde-Bisulfite Addition Compound, Mark B. Richard

Synthesis of the addition compounds of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and propionaldehyde with sodium bisulfite was achieved using the method of Stewart and Donnally. Recognition of a water comtamination led to a method for determining purity using the integrations from NMR spectrometry. An equilibrium constant for the acetaldehyde-bisulfite addition compound was determined using the method of Dasgupta. A value of 6.3 x 10-5 was determined at a ph of 4.7. This value correlates well in magnitude when compared to the value of 1.56 x 10-5 for the formaldehyde-bisulfite addition compound at pH 5.0 determined by Dasgupta and also with Stewart and …

The purpose of this study was the preparation by a novel approach of benzo-(2.2)-paracyclophane. Also synthesized were the syn-and anti-isomers of 2,15-dithia (3.3)- napthalenophane. The results of these syntheses are supported by spectral studies. In preparation for future study of the ruthenium complexes of these cyclophanes, hexamethylbenzeruthenium dichloride was also synthesized.

A new technique for aqueous determination of aldehydes and ketones was field tested along with a new technique for ambient air analysis. The work was done during the summer of 1984 on Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, NY. Both techniques utilized carbonyl derivitization as their 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazones and subsequent analysis by reversed phase HPLC. Analysis of the blank levels for the ambient air method shows the levels found to be non-detectable. The aqueous method worked well. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone were the only species found in cloud water. They were generally present in concentrations between .5 uM and 4 uM. Little …

We are interested in understanding the mechanistic details of photo-initiated chemiluminescent reactions. Currently, we are examining reactions which lead to luminescent from electronically excited nitric oxide. Stedman has reported observing NO gamma-band emission in the thermal reaction of hydrazoic acid, HN3 with O(3P). The rate constant for the production of NO* is low and, consequently, the emission intensity is weak. We are endeavoring to generate excited NO from HN3 and O(1D), the later produced in the flash photolysis of ozone. It is hoped that a greater population of NO* will be produced yielding a greater chemiluminescent intensity. By observing the …

We define a natural probability distribution over the set of k-colorable graphs on n vertices and study the probable performance of several algorithms on graphs selected from this distribution. The main results are listed below. • We describe an algorithm to determine if a given n vertex graph is k-colorable, which runs in time O(n + m log k), where m is the number of edges. We show that this algorithm can successfully identify almost all random k-colorable graphs for constant or slowly growing values of k. • We show that an algorithm proposed by Brelas, and justified on experimental …

We have made a systematic theoretical survey of the competition between ferroelastic and ferroelectric instabilities in the family of halide-based perovskites of formula ABX3, where A is an alkali-metal ion, B is a Be, Mg, or Ca ion, and X is a halide ion. Initially we surveyed the whole series of such compounds, making a theoretical lattice-dynamical study using first-principles interionic potentials composed of a long-range pure Coulomb interaction between the spherically symmetric free ions, and a short-range component calculated by the Gordon-Kim approach from the overlapping free-ion charge densities. The Orbitron maser, developed over recent years in the University of Tennessee Plasma Laboratory, is an alternative microwave source, capable of producing microwave radiation up to the submillimeter range. It operates on the basis of interaction between an electrostatically confined electron cloud and electromagnetic field in the Orbitron resonator. Good confinement of the cloud is very important for an efficient operation of the Orbitron, and is directly related to the shape of electron orbits in the device. The Lower Cambrian Chilhowee Group of northeastern Tennessee consists of the Unicoi, Hampton and Erwin Formations and is divided into four facies. Facies G occurs only within the lower 200 m of measured section (the Unicoi Formation) and consists of fine-grained to pebbly quartz wacke with rare thin beds of laminated siltstone. Subfacies Gh consist of low-angle to horizontally laminated, fine-grained sandstone with laminae and lenses of granules and pebbles. Subfacies Gh represents upper flow-regime, overbank deposition within a braided stream system that was proximal to a coastline. Subfacies Gmr consists of medium-scale, planar-tabular cross-stratified conglomerate in which megaripple bedforms …

In his book, Christian Apologetics, Norman Geisler proposes a universal test for the truth of world views. We examine this concept and find that it raises serious difficulties. This paper first presents some basic definitions for "world view" and "truth-value of a world view," then studies the concept of a universal test for the truth of world views in light of these definitions. Geisler has proposed what amounts to a universal decision procedure to determine the truth-value of world views. We show that, in the general case, no such universal decision procedure exists. The reactions of atomic hydrogen with chloroform were studied in a tubular flow reactor both in a 4 cm i.d. and 2.6 i.d. discharge flow reactor at pressure of 2.22 to 2.82 mmHg and room temperature using GC and GC/MS for analysis of the reaction. The hydrogen atom concentration at the reaction flame was measured by Chemiluminescence titration with nitrogen dioxide. The hydrogen concentrations are in the 2.48 x 10⁺¹⁴ to 4.83 x 10⁺¹⁴ atoms/cc range at six different hydrogen flow rates. Evidence was found for the formation of atomic carbon intermediate in the reaction, but methane was …

Accurately representing the physical world by computer is a topic which has direct benefits to fields like chemistry and architecture, and is a source of much research in computer science. This paper examines the steps necessary to develop and implement a graphical system that will allow for the modeling of physical world objects. In particular, this is a description of BRUCE: a graphical system that will describe a world of three dimensional polyhedra, implementing algorithms for hidden line and hidden surface removal. This paper also deals with the problems incurred along the way and suggestions for further improvement of BRUCE.

The relativistic plasma wave excited when the frequency difference between two copropagating CO₂ laser beams equals the plasma frequency is detected for the first time. The plasma-wave frequency, wave number, spatial extent, and saturation time are directly measured by use of 7-mrad, collective, ruby Thomson scattering and the forward-scattered ir spectrum. The wave amplitude ñ/n₀ is inferred to be (1-3)% which gives a longitudinal electric field of 0.3 to 1 GV/m at a laser intensity of 1.7×10¹³ W/cm², in reasonable agreement with theory.

Wood properties of giant sequoia (Sequoia gigantea [Lindl.] Decne.) were compared with those for other coniferous tree species. Wood properties such as specific gravity, various mechanical properties, extractive content, and decay resistance of young-growth giant sequoia are comparable to or more favorable than those of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.). It is recommended that giant sequoia be considered for planting stock in managed production forests to increase future supplies of wood having the characteristics so highly valued in coast redwood and other decay-resistant species

The user of interactive systems must learn a different interface for each system he uses. Furthermore the designer of such systems has limited guidelines to create good user interfaces. We describe an application interface development environment, AIDE, in which one can create and select multiple interfaces easily for a given application, and conversely one can create multiple applications with a given interface.
