An Algorithm For Parallel Subsumption, Ralph M. Butler, Arlan R. Dekock May 1985

An Algorithm For Parallel Subsumption, Ralph M. Butler, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

Many current automated theorem provers use a refutation procedure based on some version of the principle of resolution. These methods normally lead to the generation of large numbers of new clauses. Subsumption is a process that eliminates the superfluous clauses from the clause space, thus speeding up the proof. The research presented in this thesis is concerned with the design and implementation of a subsumption algorithm which exploits the parallelism provided by a multiprocessor. For portability, all coding is done in the programming language C. Monitors are used as the synchronization mechanism. Correct performance in both a multiprocessor and uniprocessor …

The Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate And The Rotational Barrier In Silaethylene, Michael W. Schmidt, Mark S. Gordon, Michel Dupuis May 1985

The Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate And The Rotational Barrier In Silaethylene, Michael W. Schmidt, Mark S. Gordon, Michel Dupuis

Mark S. Gordon

The intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) is a minimum-energy pathway connecting reactants to products via the transition state. An improved algorithm for the determination of an IRC is presented. The method is illustrated for the rotation of the silicon-carbon double bond in silaethylene. This IRC shows all coordinates vary smoothly during the rotation from the planar to twisted structures, except for a slight pyramidalization at carbon. The rotational barrier is found to be about 37 kcaljmol, in good agreement with experimental estimates.

Glass Formation And High Conductivity In The Ternary System Silver Iodide + Silver Arsenate (Ag3aso4) + Silver Metaphosphate (Agpo3): Host To Glassy .Alpha.-Silver Iodide?, Steve W. Martin, Alberto Schiraldi May 1985

Glass Formation And High Conductivity In The Ternary System Silver Iodide + Silver Arsenate (Ag3aso4) + Silver Metaphosphate (Agpo3): Host To Glassy .Alpha.-Silver Iodide?, Steve W. Martin, Alberto Schiraldi

Steve W. Martin

Wide regions of glass formation have been found in the ternary system xAgI + yAg,As04 + (1 - x - y)AgPO,. Glasses containing up to 75 mol 7% AgI can be formed in sections greater than 2 cm thick without signs of devitrification. Glass transition temperatures as high as 175 OC for glasses containing - 10 mol % AgI fall to -45 OC at the highest AgI content. An equivalent ratio of Ag1:N is defined and it is found that, for all glass-forming compositions, the electrical data as expressed in the Arrhenius form, u = A exp(-E,,/RT), log (./(a cm)-’), …

A Meta-Level Extension Of Prolog, Kenneth A. Bowen, Tobias Weinberg May 1985

A Meta-Level Extension Of Prolog, Kenneth A. Bowen, Tobias Weinberg

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Prolog has many attractive features as a programming tool for artificial intelligence. These include code that is easy to understand, programs that are easy to modify, and a clear relation between its logical and procedural semantics. Moreover, it has proved possible to create clear and efficient implementations. Nonetheless, we perceive several shortcomings. Chief among these is difficulty representing dynamic databases (databases which change in time) and an apparent restriction to backward chaining, backtracking, and depth-first search. Our intent in this paper is to present an extension to Prolog, called metaProlog, which preserves the virtues of Prolog while introducing powerful constructions …

Determining The Temperature-Dependent Characteristic Temperature Of Beryllium From Electrical Resistance Measurements, Thomas W. Listerman, Xiao-Li Zhou May 1985

Determining The Temperature-Dependent Characteristic Temperature Of Beryllium From Electrical Resistance Measurements, Thomas W. Listerman, Xiao-Li Zhou

Thomas Listerman

We have developed an intermediate-level laboratory experiment to determine the temperature- dependent characteristic temperature of beryllium. The apparatus used to measure the resistance of a beryllium wire sample between liquid nitrogen and room temperatures was simple. The characteristic temperatures obtained from these data using the Block-Grüneisen model are in reasonable agreement with literature values obtained from resistivity and heat capacity experiments. The experiment introduced students to cryogenic and computer data analysis techniques and forced them to extend their knowledge of the theory of electrical resistance and of characteristic temperatures.

Sedimentation In A Blast-Zone Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington-Implications For Varve Formation, Roger Y. Anderson, Edward Nuhfer, Walter E. Dean May 1985

Sedimentation In A Blast-Zone Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington-Implications For Varve Formation, Roger Y. Anderson, Edward Nuhfer, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Sediment collected in traps in a newly formed lake in the blast-impact area at Mount St. Helens recorded a sediment yield that is about two orders of magnitude greater than for comparable basins with vegetation and similar precipitation. Most sediment was mobilized by storms and run off at the onset of the wet season. The sedimentation response to strongly seasonal precipitation, in the absence of vegetation, produced turbidites and graded annual couplets. The style of sedimentation suggests an alternate mechanism for the formation of long sequences of graded clastic varves.

Magnetic Polarity Stratigraphy And Mammalian Fauna Of The Deseadan (Late Oligocene-Early Miocene) Salla Beds Of Northern Bolivia, Bruce J. Macfadden, Kenneth E. Campbell Jr., Richard L. Cifelli, Oscar Siles, Noye M. Johnson, Charles W. Naeser, Peter K. Zeitler May 1985

Magnetic Polarity Stratigraphy And Mammalian Fauna Of The Deseadan (Late Oligocene-Early Miocene) Salla Beds Of Northern Bolivia, Bruce J. Macfadden, Kenneth E. Campbell Jr., Richard L. Cifelli, Oscar Siles, Noye M. Johnson, Charles W. Naeser, Peter K. Zeitler

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Salla Beds contain a rich assemblage of Deseadan mammals that traditionally has been considered of early Oligocene age. These deposits, located 90-100 km SE of La Paz, Bolivia, consist of more than 540 m of principally fluviatile clays and silts with numerous interbedded tuffs. Paleomagnetic samples were collected from 104 sites spaced at stratigraphic intervals of about 6 m. As a result of thermal demagnetization (at 400°Co r greater), unambiguous polarities were determined for 76 of the 104 originally sampled ites. The pattern of reversals, stage of evolution of the fossils, and preliminary isotopic dates (including a K/Ar age …

Experimental Study Of Spin-Exchange Effects In Elastic And Ionizing Collisions Of Polarized Electrons With Polarized Hydrogen Atoms, G. D. Fletcher, M. J. Alguard, Timothy J. Gay, V. W. Hughes, P.F. Wainwright, M. S. Lubell, W. Raith May 1985

Timothy J. Gay Publications

Using crossed beams of polarized electrons and polarized hydrogen atoms we have investigated the effect of spin exchange on 90° elastic scattering from 4.4 to 30.3 eV and impact ionization from 14.1 to 197.0 eV. Our results suggest that the range of validity of various theoretical approximation methods is more restricted than had been assumed previously.

Data Analysis Using Experimental Design Model Factorial Analysis Of Variance/Covariance (Dmaovc.Bas), Wesley E. Newton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

DMAOVC.BAS is a computer program written in the compiler version of microsoft basic which performs factorial analysis of variance/covariance with expected mean squares. The program accommodates factorial and other hierarchical experimental designs with balanced sets of data. The program is writ ten for use on most modest sized microprocessors, in which the compiler is available. The program is parameter file driven where the parameter file consists of the response variable structure, the experimental design model expressed in a similar structure as seen in most textbooks, information concerning the factors (i.e. fixed or random, and the number of levels), and necessary …

Non Relativistic Kapitza-Dirac Scattering, Evangelos A. Coutsias, J.K. Mciver May 1985

Non Relativistic Kapitza-Dirac Scattering, Evangelos A. Coutsias, J.K. Mciver

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

We use techniques of singular perturbation theory to investigate the scattering of nonrelativistic charged particles by a standing light wave (Kapitza-Dirac scattering). Unlike previous treatments, we give explicit results for the effects of the time-dependent part of the field. For low field intensity or low particle energy, we show that the leading-order effects can be found from an averaged equation, and we compute corrections. For the strong fields that can be produced by modern lasers and/or high particle energies, we show that the time dependence of the potential leads to focusing. Our methods can be applied to other problems with …

Approaching Distributed Database Implementations Through Functional Programming Concepts, Robert M. Keller, Gary Lindstrom May 1985

Approaching Distributed Database Implementations Through Functional Programming Concepts, Robert M. Keller, Gary Lindstrom

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The application of functional programming concepts to the data representation and querying aspects of databases has been discussed by Shipman and Buneman, et al. respectively. We argue the suitability of a function-based approach to additional aspects of database systems, including updating, transaction serialization, and physical distribution and communication. It is shown how the NmergeH extension of a purely functional model permits serializable concurrent "primary site" distribution control. We also present preliminary experimental results which indicate that a reasonable degree of concurrency is attainable from the functional approach.

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer May 1985

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Measuring the productivity of an R&D organization is extremely tricky. Productivity is usually defined as a ratio of an output, like number of cars produced on an assembly line, to an input, like the wages paid the workers. While R&D may have a measurable input, the output is often intangible and difficult to quantify. This is further complicated because the return from an R&D department may not be realized for one or two decades, which means the time lag is much higher than in factory measurements. Furthermore, many researchers believe that this kind of measurement may be counterproductive, since the mere act …

Collecting Data About Logic Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin May 1985

Collecting Data About Logic Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Design of high performance hardware and software based gate-switch level logic simulators requires knowledge about the logic simulation process itself. Unfortunately, little data is publically available concerning key aspects of this process. An example of this is the lack of published empirical measurements relating to the time distribution of events generated by such simulators. This paper presents a gate-switch level logic simulator lsim which is oriented towards the collection of data about the simulation process. The basic components of lsim are reviewed, and its relevant data gathering facilities are discussed. An example is presented which illustrates the use of lsim …

Effect Of Soil Additives On Water Infiltration On Kentucky Soils, Lloyd W. Murdock May 1985

Effect Of Soil Additives On Water Infiltration On Kentucky Soils, Lloyd W. Murdock

Soil Science News and Views

Many products are advertised and sold in Kentucky as soil additives to aid the movement of water into and through the soil. Most of these additives contain compounds that reduce the surface tension of water. That means that they change the way water is absorbed onto surfaces that have a tendency to repel water. However, their effectiveness in this regard has been questioned due to the huge volume of soil to be effected and the fact that our Kentucky soils are not hydrophobic. In order to determine the effectiveness of these types of products, an experiment was designed to test …

Sequential Thrusting Beneath The Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah, Tad William Schirmer May 1985

Sequential Thrusting Beneath The Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah, Tad William Schirmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The downstructure of viewing geologic maps, balanced and cross sections, and hanging-wall-sequence diagrams are applied to produce the first comprehensive synthesis of the structure below the willard thrust sheet.

Development of the duplex beneath the Willard thrust may be explained with a "piggyback" thrust model where younger thrust slices form below and fold an older, overlying thrust sheet. Progressive failure of the footwall ramp of the Willard thrust sheet extended the sole thrust eastward and produced a duplex consisting of thrust slices (horses) which adhered to the overriding thrust sheet where it ramped from a lower sole thrust to an …

Chemical Weathering Of Pyrite In Soils, Aaron D. Brown May 1985

Chemical Weathering Of Pyrite In Soils, Aaron D. Brown

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The products of pyrite oxidation, including solution phase Fe2+, Fe3+, S2O32-, S4O62-, SO32- and SO42- and solid phase Fe(OH)3, were measured under controlled conditions in order to investigate the behavior of pyrite in calcareous and alkaline soils.

The distribution of sulfur oxidation products is pH dependent and can be interpreted in terms of metastable equilibrium among thiosulfate, disulfane disulfonate and sulfite. Thiosulfate and sulfite predominate in the pH range greater than about pH 7 or 8. Sulfane disulfonates are more …

Pollution In The Mediterranean: A Regional Response, Antony O. Heimer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea has been an issue of significant political, economic and environmental concern for more than a decade. It has more recently become a regional issue with politically diverse coastal states and a wide variety of international agencies implementing cooperative programs of scientific research, education and training, planning, and treaty drafting. Being a regional issue, the pollution problem has facilitated discussions between nations on several levels and governments have found it politically advantageous to use the issue for a variety of purposes. This paper will provide an overview of the Mediterranean pollution problem, covering the nature of the …
