Laser Levelling Land For Flood Irrigation, M D. Green, J. P. Middlemas Jan 1985

Laser Levelling Land For Flood Irrigation, M D. Green, J. P. Middlemas

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Since the introduction of laser levelling to Western Australia's South-West irrigation area five years ago, many farmers have benefited from this new and precise method of land-forming.

The use of lasser controlled earthmoving equipment to redevelop irrigated paddocks has led to improved irrigation efficiency and drainage. Less water is used for each irrigation, water is applied more evenly and less labour is needed. many older, grass-dominated paddocks have been reseeded to improve pasture species.

Eradicating Fruit Fly From Carnarvon, Kingsley Thomas Fisher Jan 1985

Eradicating Fruit Fly From Carnarvon, Kingsley Thomas Fisher

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Late last year the Mediteranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Weidemann) was eradicated from Canarvon, Western Australia by using an intergrated programme of sterile insect releases and bait spraying.

The eradication marked the end of a four-year study on the use and effectiveness of the Sterile Insect Technique, a biological control technique which uses an insect pest against itself. such a study can be used as a basis for treating other threatening insect pests, such as the serious cattle pest screw-worm fly, should they be found in Asustralia.

Being a biological control method, the Sterile Insect Technique is an exellent …

Water Quality For Irrigation, P R. George Jan 1985

Water Quality For Irrigation, P R. George

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Although irrigation and salinity problems are frequently inseperable, there is a range of management methods that can be used to handle marginal quality water. Freuently these methods are simple, but require careful planning.

The wide range in tolerance of crops to salinity can be exploiter to ensure that appropriate crops are selected for the water available.

Because crops vary in their sensitivity to salt uptake in the leaves or the roots, watering methods can be changed to avoid problems. For profitable production enough water should be applied to ensure adequate water is available for plant growth as well as to …

Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson Jan 1985

Salinity Control In Northern China, G A. Robertson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

China has vast areas of saline land, perhaps as much as six million hectares. Some of this saline land is a result of marine influence in coastal areas and some is the resultof soil formation in areas with saline geological deposits and inadequate rainfall to leach out the salts at that time.

However, most saline soils in China are as a result of secondary salinisation processess induced by a hydrological imbalance resulting from over-clearing of the land or irrigation. This imbalance has produced rising watertables bringing the salt closer to the soil surface.

In this article, G..A. Robertson, Commissioner …

Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland Jan 1985

Residual Values Of Australian Rock Phosphates, Michael D A Bolland

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For years superphosphate has been the cheapest, convenient and most effective way of supplying phosphorus to newly cleared soils in Western Australia's South-West that are acutely deficient in phosphorus. However its effectiveness as a phosphorus source falls markedly after application. Regular applications are needed to maintaine profitable pastures and crops on these soils.

After a big jump in supperphosphate prices in the mid 970s, researchers tested the use of Australian rock phosphates as potentially cheaper alternative phosphorus fertilisers to superphosphate. On the none-leaching sands, as this article shows, none of the rock phosphates was as effective for plant growth as …

Manual: Measurement Of Evapotranspiration By The Bowen Ratio Energy Balance Method, Joon Kim, Shashi Verma

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Bowen ratio energy balance method has been widely used by many researchers to estimate the fluxes of water vapor and sensible heat between crops and atmosphere. The energy balance for the crop canopy can be expressed as Rn + G + H + LE + PS + M = 0 (1) where Rn is net radiation, G is soil surface heat flux, H is sensible heat flux and LE is latent heat flux.

North American Vegetation Patterns Observed With The Noaa-7 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, Samuel N. Goward, Compton J. Tucker, Dennis G. Dye Jan 1985

North American Vegetation Patterns Observed With The Noaa-7 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, Samuel N. Goward, Compton J. Tucker, Dennis G. Dye

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Spectral vegetation index measurements derived from remotely sensed observations show great promise as a means to improve knowledge of land vegetation patterns. The daily, global observations acquired by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, a sensor on the current series of U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorological satellites, may be particularly well suited for global studies of vegetation. Preliminary results from analysis of North American observations, extending from April to November 1982, show that the vegetation index patterns observed correspond to the known seasonality of North American natural and cultivated vegetation. Integration of the observations over the growing season …

Solvent Influence On Atomic Spectra: The Effect Of Finite Size, Randall W. Hall, Peter G. Wolynes Jan 1985

Solvent Influence On Atomic Spectra: The Effect Of Finite Size, Randall W. Hall, Peter G. Wolynes

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Time dependent Hartree theory is used to determine the solvent effect on atomic spectra for a given solvent configuration. Configuration averaging is performed as in the mean spherical approximation, resulting in an upper bound to the polarizability. Comparisons are made with previous, more approximate theories, including path integral treatments. It is found that deviations from previous theories can be significant in certain regimes.

The Effect Of Dispersed Oil On The Calcification Rate Of The Reef-Building Coral Diploria Strigosa, Richard E. Dodge, A. H. Knap, Sheila C. Wyers, H. R. Frith, T. D. Sleeter, S. R. Smith Jan 1985

The Effect Of Dispersed Oil On The Calcification Rate Of The Reef-Building Coral Diploria Strigosa, Richard E. Dodge, A. H. Knap, Sheila C. Wyers, H. R. Frith, T. D. Sleeter, S. R. Smith

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Hermatypic corals represent environmentally and economically important components of the reef ecosystem. Oil spills and clean-up operations in reef areas are potential sources of pollution impact. This paper presents an evaluation of the calcification rate of specimens of the reef-building coral Diploria strigosa in response to 24 hour treatments of chemically dispersed oil at concentrations of 20 ppm. The concentrations and durations were chosen to represent a scenario of a short-term oil spill treated with dispersant passing over a coral reef.

Calcification rates were determined by the buoyant weight technique at several day intervals for up to 29 days following …

Radial Distribution Of Dose And Cross-Sections For The Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses, Zhang Chunxiang, D. E. Dunn, Robert Katz Jan 1985

Radial Distribution Of Dose And Cross-Sections For The Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses, Zhang Chunxiang, D. E. Dunn, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A new semi-empirical algorithm for the radial distribution of dose is compared with available data. The algorithm is used to calculate the inactivation cross section for dry enzymes and viruses using an extended target model of a 1-hit detector. Agreement with data is at about the 15% level, approximating the precision of the data itself.

Reflected Diffusion Processes With Jumps, José-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin Jan 1985

Reflected Diffusion Processes With Jumps, José-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

A stochastic differential equation of Wiener-Poisson type is considered in a d-dimensional bounded region. By using a penalization argument on the domain, we are able to prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the strong sense. The main assumptions are Lipschitzian coefficients, either convex or smooth domains and a regular outward reflecting direction. As a direct consequence, it is verified that the reflected diffusion process with jumps depends on the initial date in a Lipschitz fashion.

We established a condition on boundary curves (ending at points) lying either in the unit disc or the upper half plane which implies that any consecutively separated sequence, in the hyperbolic distance, lying on one of these curves is an interpolating sequence for bounded holomorphic functions.

The Quaternary Bone Caves And Associated Sites At Wallingford, Jamaica, Donald A. Mcfarlane, R. E. Gledhill Jan 1985

The Quaternary Bone Caves And Associated Sites At Wallingford, Jamaica, Donald A. Mcfarlane, R. E. Gledhill

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

A group of caves associated with the sink of the One Eye River in St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, have been the subject of numerous important palaeontological investigations beginning 1919. Unfortunately, considerable confusion has arisen in the literature through inadequate documentation of different sites. The caves of the immediate area are described and located, and their palaeontological significance is summarised in the light of recent taxonomic review and relevant geochronological evidence.
