The Tolerance Of Cereals To Herbicides., D. G. Bowran Jan 1985

The Tolerance Of Cereals To Herbicides., D. G. Bowran

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Herbicides affect not only the weeds present in a crop, but also the crop itself. In the absence of weeds, both positive and negative responses to herbicides have been reported in the literature. The negative responses are the most important, especially if yield is decreased below the economic threshold for herbicide use. Factors which are important in determining the level of crop response to a herbicide include the crop species and variety, the timing of the herbicide, the rate of herbicide and the environmental conditions under which the crop is growing.

Symmetry Behavior Of The Static Taub Universe: Effect Of Curvature Anisotropy, T. C. Shen, B. L. Hu, D. J. O'Connor Jan 1985

Symmetry Behavior Of The Static Taub Universe: Effect Of Curvature Anisotropy, T. C. Shen, B. L. Hu, D. J. O'Connor

T. -C. Shen

Using the static Taub universe as an example, we study the effect of curvature anisotropy on symmetry breaking of self-interacting scalar field. The one-loop effective potential of a λφ4 field with arbitrary coupling (ξ) is computed by ζ-function regularization. It is expressed as a perturbative series in a small anisotropy parameter α measuring the deformation from the spherical Einstein universe with radius of curvature α. This result is used for analyzing the symmetry behavior of such a system as a function of the geometric (α,α) and field (ξ,λ) parameters. The result is also used to address the question of …

Photothermal Lens Aberration Effects In Two Laser Thermal Lens Spectrometry, Stephen E. Bialkowski Jan 1985

Photothermal Lens Aberration Effects In Two Laser Thermal Lens Spectrometry, Stephen E. Bialkowski

Stephen E. Bialkowski

A comparison of theories describing two laser photothermal lens signals is given. The aberrant nature of this lens is accounted for in a theory which treats the propagation of a monitor laser in terms of a phase shift in this laser beam wave front. The difference between theories are discussed in terms of the predicted signal strengths and temporal behavior. The aberrant theory results in smaller theoretical signal strengths and different functional relationships between signal and analyte level.

Theory Of Spectral Asymmetries And Nonlinear Currentsin The Equatorial Electrojet, E. Kudeki, D. T. Farley, Bela G. Fejer Jan 1985

Theory Of Spectral Asymmetries And Nonlinear Currentsin The Equatorial Electrojet, E. Kudeki, D. T. Farley, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

The spectral up-down asymmetry of type 1 echoes returned from the equatorial electrojet irregularities is shown to be a consequence of the nonlinear development of the horizontally propagating large scale primary waves which dominate the k spectrum of the electrojet turbulence. The waves reduce the vertical electric polarization field of the electrojet and suffer second harmonic distortion as they grow. These effects together could cause an asymmetry exceeding 20% between the upward and downward components of the relative (to the ions) electron velocity associated with the primary waves. This asymmetry, which changes its direction from day to night as does …

Effectiveness Of Shelterbelts In Improving Microclimatic Conditions For Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Todd Matthew Schneider Jan 1985

Effectiveness Of Shelterbelts In Improving Microclimatic Conditions For Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Todd Matthew Schneider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To evaluate wintering habitat for ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), this study compared microclimate regimes , as determined by wind and temperature, between shelterbelts containing 1 or 2 rows of coniferous tree species with shelterbelts comprised entirely of deciduous tree species and between wetland and shelterbelt habitats. Maximum temperatures within both shelterbelt types, particularly deciduous shelterbelts, were cooler than outside ambient air temperature during summer. Throughout November, December, and January, minimum temperatures in coniferous shelterbelts types were significantly (P≤0.04) warmer than deciduous shelterbelt types. Effectiveness of shelterbelts in reducing wind velocity decreased from an average of 71% during summer to 28% …

Lungworm Infections, Reproduction And Summer Habitat Use Of Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Gary C. Brundige Jan 1985

Lungworm Infections, Reproduction And Summer Habitat Use Of Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Gary C. Brundige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were once indigenous to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. When European settlers moved into this region during the late 1800' s, market hunting, loss of habitat, and introduction of animal diseases and parasites caused the subspecies of the region, the Audubon's bighorn sheep (O. c. auduboni), to become extinct by 1916 (Buechner 1960). To reestablish bighorn sheep in the Black Hills, 8 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (O. c. canadensis) were introduced into the former range of the Audubon's sheep in 1922. Finding the habitat to be very suitable, this small population increased to …

Wildlife Response To Stand Structure Of Green Ash Woodlands, Robert A. Hodorff Jan 1985

Wildlife Response To Stand Structure Of Green Ash Woodlands, Robert A. Hodorff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vegetation, birds and mammals were sampled over two years in two types of green ash woodlands in extreme northwestern South Dakota. Woodlands referred to as closed canopy stands consisted of dense stands of various species of trees and shrubs in different size and age classes. Woodlands referred to as open canopy stands had sparse stands of older trees, with intermediate seedling, sapling and tall shrub layers nearly absent. Closed stands had significantly greater (P = .002) coverage of shrubs in the understory than open stands while open stands had significantly greater (P = .004) total coverage of grasses than closed …

Turbulent Disruptions From The Strauss Equations, Jill Potkalitsky Dahlburg Jan 1985

Turbulent Disruptions From The Strauss Equations, Jill Potkalitsky Dahlburg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The subject of this thesis is an analysis of results from pseudospectral simulation of the Strauss equations of reduced three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics. We have solved these equations in a rigid cylinder of square cross section, a cylinder with perfectly conducting side walls, and periodic ends. We assume that the uniform-density magnetofluid which fills the cylinder is resistive, but inviscid. Situations which we are considering are in several essential ways similar to a tokamak-like plasma; an external magnetic field is imposed, and the plasma carries a net current which produces a poloidal magnetic field of sufficient strength to induce current disruptions. These …

Community Structure Of Demersal Fishes On The Inshore U.S. Atlantic Continental Shelf: Cape Ann, Ma. To Cape Fear, N.C. (United States, Cluster Analysis, Massachusetts, North Carolina), William C. Phoel

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Numerical classification analyses (clustering) of spring, summer and fall National Marine Fisheries Service bottom trawl catches on the inshore continental shelf between Cape Ann, Ma. and Cape Fear, N.C., showed consistent species associations and faunal zones over a three year period. Analysis of a data set created by combining all nine survey cruises also produced consistent species associations, however sites clustered by seasons as well as by geographic area. The three faunal provinces of the U.S. east coast (Gulf of Maine, Middle Atlantic Bight and South Atlantic Bight) were represented in the study area, as were the seasonal faunal barriers …

The Holocene Carbonate Eolianites Of North Point And The Modern Marine Environments Between North Point And Cut Cay, Brian White, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The goals of this part of the field trip are to study the types of strata, sedimentary structures, trace fossils, and dune morphologies of the Holocene eolianites excellently exposed along the coasts of Rice Bay and North Point. We will show how eolian deposition of carbonate grains occurs and how dunes are initiated and evolve. Toward the end of this excursion, a short snorkel dive will be conducted in the shallow, sheltered waters between North Point and Cut Cay to study grass beds, sandy substrates, and hardgrounds and to compare their associated sediments, plants, and animals. The area to be …

Community Ecology, Robert K. Rose, Elmer C. Birney Jan 1985

Community Ecology, Robert K. Rose, Elmer C. Birney

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

COMMUNITIES with Microtus tend to be structurally simple, usually grasslands or tundra, and to have no more than two species of Microtus and rarely more than six species of small mammals. Microtus often dominates both numerically and in total small mammal biomass, especially at higher latitudes. The small mammal community is most influenced by Microtus through its fluctuations in density, and thus also in biomass, by its relatively high level of diurnal activity, and by its year-round activity. Other species of small mammals may be adversely affected because Microtus usually is larger and behaviorally dominant and also because the mere …
