Improved Catchments For Farm Dams, I A F Laing
Improved Catchments For Farm Dams, I A F Laing
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The amounts and frequency of runoff from unimproved farmland catchments in Western Australia's cereal and sheep districts are notoriously variable and unreliable. As a result many farmers have constructed improved catchments to ensure better reliability of farm dams for livestock and homestead water supplies.
Improved catchments which are used extensively on these farms are all of the compacted or bare-earth type. These include roaded catchments, flat batter dams and, to a lesser extent, scraped catchments. This article mainly discusses roaded catchments, the most common of the improved catchment types on farms.

Water Supplies : Dams And Roaded Catchments, W J. Burdass, T. R. Negus, A. L. Prout, I. A. F. Laing
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's Upper and Lower Great Southern statistical areas include most of the broad-scale agricultural land south of a line from Perth to Hyden. Much of the area is well-developed and carries 13.4 million sheep, 203 00 cattle and 95 000 pigs, almost half the State's livestock.
There are few natural rivers and lakes to water livestock in summer and much of the bore water is salty. On-farm waterr conservation, therefore, consits mainly of excavated earth tanks (dams) which are filled by surface runoff or shallow seepage. In the drier areas and in the sandplain roaded catchments have neen built …
Drought Proofing The Farm : Case Studies, J L. Frith
Drought Proofing The Farm : Case Studies, J L. Frith
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For many years, Western Australia's north-eastern wheatbelthas suffered chronic shortages of water for stock and domestic use. The area's averageannual rainfall is generally low - less than 300 millimetres - and droughts in the 1970s caused futher problems. manydams in the area leak or have inadequate catchmentsand groundwater is scarce ormofmpoor quality.
In March 982, the Western Australian Government provided $100 000 for the Department of agriculture to demonstrate the potential of establishing permanent, drought-proof water supplies on farms in the north-eastern wheatbelt. The methods were to use exixting techniques to build dams and catchments. In a year of low …
Northern Wheatbelt Water Supply Study, I A F Laing, R. M. Pridham
Northern Wheatbelt Water Supply Study, I A F Laing, R. M. Pridham
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Department of Agriculture surveys have shown that many farms in Western australia's northern wheatbelt have inadequate water supplies. More than 80 per cent of all farms in that area depend soley on groundwater for watering livestock, a much higher percentage than for most other farming areas. Because groundwater salinities have increased in recent years, concern is held for the long-term future of this recource.
In contrast to more southern agricultural areas, farm dams in the northern wheatbelt are relatively uncommon. Only 30 per cent of the existing dams in the northern wheatbelt constitute effective water supplies. More than half of …
Increasing Groundwater Salinity In The Northern Wheatbelt, R J. Mcgowan
Increasing Groundwater Salinity In The Northern Wheatbelt, R J. Mcgowan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Every farmer in western Australia's northern wheatbelt will know of a groundwater supply, be it bore, well or soak. that has become increasingly saline. The groundwater may have become more saline over a period of 15 years or more, or have been noticed only recently. Inevitably, the bore will lie within an area cleared for agriculture. This increase in groundwater salinity may be associated with soil salinisation. Although researchers have some understanding of the processes causing salinisation of groundwater in the wheatbelt and the extent of the problem, little is known about the rates of salinisation and groundwater rise. A …
Dam Site Selection In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, J L. Frith
Dam Site Selection In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, J L. Frith
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's wheatbelt farm dams are dug three to eight metres deep and are generally sited in soils which either are inherently impermeable or can be made so during construction.
In the eastern and north-eastern wheatbelt, however, only a small proportion of the soils meets these criteria. Dam site selection in these areas therefore depends on a good knowledge ofwhich soils aresuitable and on our being able to locate them efficiently by using surface indications such as surface soil, natural vegetation or topographic features.
Sandplain Hardpan : A Different Dam Construction Material, A F. Mccrea
Sandplain Hardpan : A Different Dam Construction Material, A F. Mccrea
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Before 1980, the Department of Agriculture did not believe that suitable farm dam materials could be found in light land soils. However Beacon earthmoving contractor, V> J> Pavlinovich, has demonstrated that where suitable cemented subsoils or 'hardpan' existed, a succcessful dam site could be found.
This material should not be confused with compaction or traffic hardpans ehich are dense layers of soil found near the surface. Traffic hardpans result from compaction of soil materials with the passage of vehicles and farm machinery. Rather, the hardpan referred to here is a natural subsoil layer that has been cemented by silica and …
Chemical Sealing Of Earth Dams, R G. Pepper
Chemical Sealing Of Earth Dams, R G. Pepper
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Leakage is not a major cause of failure of farm dams in the Western Australian wheatbelt, but it is a problem in some districts where it can limit stock carrying capacity. Leaking dams are especially common in the West midlands, the north-eastern wheatbelt and the 'jarrah-belt' which extends from Bindoon, southward to Manjimup and Mt Barker (see map and Table 1).
Some dams which leaked when first built have sealed themselves over the years. Others have been successfully sealed using sodium tripolyphosphate.
Assessment Of Waterlogged Sites, D J. Mcfarlane
Assessment Of Waterlogged Sites, D J. Mcfarlane
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil is said to be waterlogged if any part of the plant root zone is saturated with water. In severe cases soil is saturated to the surface and waterlogging is obvious. Waterlogging is distinguished from flooding in which surface runoff brings down water from higher up in a catchment. However, flooding may result in waterlogged sites.
Throughflow Troughs For The Measurement Of Shallow Seepage On Hillslopes, C J. Henschke, J A. Bessell-Browne
Throughflow Troughs For The Measurement Of Shallow Seepage On Hillslopes, C J. Henschke, J A. Bessell-Browne
Resource management technical reports
Throughflow troughs were installed to assess their effectiveness in quantifying shallow sub-surface flows on hillslopes. The majority of flow was found to occur from decayed root channels in clay sub-soils below the lowest gutter. The conclusion at this site is that shallow throughflow troughs installed on a small scale are not capable of quantifying all of the seepage occurring on hillslopes.

Preliminary Investigation For Underground Storage Of Pipeline Gas In The Bruer And Flora Pools, Mist Gas Field, Columbia County, Oregon, Paul Joseph Townley
Dissertations and Theses
Northwest Natural Gas Canpany has proposed to convert the Bruer and Flora pools of the Mist Gas Field in west-central Columbia County, Northwestern Oregon, to pipeline gas storage reservoirs. Conversion to underground storage of pipeline gas in these depleted gas reservoirs would be the first in the Pacific Northwest. The Bruer and Flora Pools are fault trapped within the Cowlitz Formation. The shales overlying the Cowlitz Formation create a local seal for these gas reservoirs. X-ray diffraction and density log measurements suggest that the clay in these shales is primarily composed of smectite, which provides an excellent caprock seal.

Middle And Late Wisconsinan (Pleistocene) Insect Assemblages From Illinois, Kristine D. Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Two highly organic sediment sequences from central and western Illinois (the Athens North Quarry and Biggsville sites, respectively) of Middle and Late Wisconsinan age were studied to gain knowledge about the environment and climate of this area during the time immediately prior to the maximum extent of the last glaciation. Paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic inferences are based principally upon knowledge of the habitat preferences and geographic distributions of extant species of beetles that are represented as fossils. These data are supplemented by information from sedimentological and taphonomic studies and from previously published palynological and plant-macrofossil studies.
The Athens North Quarry site …

Environmental Perception And Its Impacts On The Tourist Industry: A Case Study Of The Niagara Region, Donna Marie Senese
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The natural resources of the Niagara Region of Ontario have played an important role in the success of the tourist industry in the region. The Niagara Region has been developed on an industrial and agricultural base since the nineteenth century. Due to conflicting demands of the manufacturing, agricultural and tourism industries for aesthetic, recreational and waste disposal purposes, the physical environment has deteriorated. The research problem of this thesis is to determine the extent of the effect of this deteriorated environment upon the tourist industry in the Niagara Region.
Physical inventories of resources are not adequate in terms of evaluating …

Group Theoretical Analysis Of In-Shell Interaction In Atoms, Yanfang Ho
Group Theoretical Analysis Of In-Shell Interaction In Atoms, Yanfang Ho
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
A group theoretic approach to Layzer's 1/2 expansion method is explored. In part this builds on earlier work of Wulfman(2), of Moshinsky et al(l4), and of Sinanoglu, Herrick(lS), and Kellman (16) on second row atoms.
I investigate atoms with electrons in the 3s-3p-3d shell and find:
1. Wulfman's constant of motion accurately predicts configuration mixing for systems with two to eight electrons in the 3s-3p subshell.
2. The same constant of motion accurately predicts configuration mixing for systems with two electrons in the 3s-3p-3d shell.
3. It accurately predicts configuration mixing in systems of high angular momentum L and of …

The Role Of The Computer In Society Some Aspects Of Person-Machine Interaction, Robert Clarence Hallman
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In Community Psychology, we assume that people at the grassroots can learn to help themselves if they are offered the means of understanding a problem and helped to discover the strategies needed to resolve it. Micro-computer technology is currently at a cultural crossroads: a technology in search of new applications. To date, research and concerns around the role of the computer in society have taken the macro view, being predominantly sociologically, politically, and economically oriented. The purpose of the present study was to bring these issues to the individual level and to examine some variables at the person-computer interface. In …

Nouvelles Données Morphologiques Et Caryologie Du Triclade Hypogé Pyrénéen Dendrocoelum Lescherae, Nicole Gourbault
International Journal of Speleology
The study of a new strain of the hypogeous Tricladida Dendrocoelum lescherae has demonstrated the very low anatomical variability of this species. The chromosome complement was found to be 2n = 32; measurements of somatic mitoses have shown that these elements are metacentric; the gametocytes possess 16 bivalents. Number and morphology of the chromosomes are similar within the subgenus Dendrocoelides.

Effects Of El Nino On Local Hydrography And Growth Of The Giant Kelp, Macrocystis Pyrifera, At Santa Catalina Island, California, Richard C. Zimmerman, Deborah L. Robertson
OES Faculty Publications
Deepened isotherms associated with El Niño resulted in severe nutrient limitation and very low kelp productivity during the last half of 1983. Frond growth rates were so low that terminal blades formed before reaching the surface, eliminating the canopy. Frond initiation rates were also extremely low, resulting in significant reductions in mean plant size. Plants growing above 10m were more severely affected than plants at 20m. Nutrient pulses associated with internal waves are thus critical for survival of Macrocystis pyrifera in nutritionally marginal habitats in Southern California.
Microbial Manganese Reduction By Enrichment Cultures From Coastal Marine Sediments, David J. Burdige, Kenneth H. Nealson
Microbial Manganese Reduction By Enrichment Cultures From Coastal Marine Sediments, David J. Burdige, Kenneth H. Nealson
OES Faculty Publications
Manganese reduction was catalyzed by enrichment cultures of anaerobic bacteria obtained from coastal marine sediments. In the absence of oxygen, these enrichment cultures reduced manganates when grown on either lactate, succinate, or acetate in both sulfate-free and sulfate-containing artificial seawaters. Sodium azide as well as oxygen completely inhibited microbial manganese reduction by these enrichment cultures, whereas molybdate had no effect on them. The addition of nitrate to the medium slightly decreased the rate of Mn2+ production by these enrichment cultures. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the manganese-reducing organisms in these enrichment cultures use manganates as terminal …
Sedimentologic And Stratigraphic Significance Of Boulder Layers In The Outer Coastal Plain Of Southeastern Virginia, Robert C. Mcdaniel
Sedimentologic And Stratigraphic Significance Of Boulder Layers In The Outer Coastal Plain Of Southeastern Virginia, Robert C. Mcdaniel
OES Theses and Dissertations
In southeastern Virginia one to two discontinuous boulder layers occur at the base of the Pleistocene Norfolk Formation. The sediments, heavy minerals and microfossils within the boulder layers in addition to boulder lithologies, dimensions and orientations were studied to determine the origin of these layers. These data indicate the boulder layers were separated into two similar yet distinct layers.
The ancestral James River with sea-level 100 meters lower than today probably had the capacity to entrain 70-80 percent of the clasts in the boulder layers, but probably not the capacity to entrain the larger cobbles and boulders in the boulder …

Fault Movements And Tectonics Of Eastern Iran: Boundaries Of The Lut Plate, Ali A. Nowroozi, A. Mohajer-Ashjai
OES Faculty Publications
Summary. From 1977 March 21 to 1981 July 28, about 15 earthquakes with Ms ≥6.0 and many earthquakes with Ms≥4.5 have occurred in Iran. The upsurge of seismic activity started following the Khorqu earthquake of 1977 March 21, M,=7.0, south-east of the Fars folded series of Zagros. This shock had a thrust focal mechanism solution indicating the general northward movement of the Arabian plate with respect to the Iranian landmass. It was followed by six major damaging earthquakes in eastern Iran. The earthquakes are associated with extensive faulting which surrounds the Lut plate. (1) The Zarand earthquake …

The Use Of Ilmenite Element Composition For The Determination Of Provenance, Yu W. Tsang
OES Theses and Dissertations
Fifty three samples were taken from three major rivers and their tributaries in Virginia: the James, Roanoke. and Potomac-Shenandoah Rivers. Samples were obtained from the Valley and Ridge. Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces. The possible source rock types for these samples were determined by comparison of tributary ilmenite composition with drainage basin rock types. Ilmenite element concentration varied with different rock types. Ti was usually high for the ilmenite derived from non-mafic igneous rocks. Mg and Cr were high for the ilmenite from mafic igneous rocks. Zn was low for metamorphic ilmenite. The ilmenite from sedimentary rocks tended to have …

Raman scattering is used to study the annealing behavior produced by 10 nsec, 565 nm dye laser pulses in high dose ion-implanted GaAs. Samples were prepared with Sn and Cd implantations of 2, 5, and 10 x 1015 cm2. The Raman spectra indicate that the threshold for epitaxial growth lies between 0.2 - 0.3 J cm2. Best carrier activation (∼ 2%), however, is achieved at ∼1.6 J cm2 for the Sn-implanted sample (n-type). For Cd implantation the electrical activation appears to be very high ({greater-than or approximate} 50%) for low pulse energies({less-than or approximate} 0.3 J cm2) but decreases for …

Evidence is presented for a two-step process in ion-atom collisions in which two independent interactions occur in a single encounter. Measurements for 15200-MeVS13++He collisions indicate that uncorrelated projectile K-shell excitation and capture of a target electron occur in a single collision with one target atom. The results are in reasonable qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions of this two-step process. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A theory has been formulated to characterize charge-transfer collisions in the presence of an external laser field. The molecular-state-expansion method is used to describe the scattering process within the impact-parameter formalism. Electron translation factors are included in the molecular-state expansion so that the scattering wave function satisfies the correct boundary conditions. The theory is applied to the process K++NaK+Na+. In addition, we have made a detailed analysis of laser-assisted charge transfer for low-energy collisions. In this case, a Landau-Zener formula can be derived which shows that the cross section increases with decreasing incident energy. In general the laser coupling is …

The Continental Crust: Its Composition And Evolution, Stuart Ross Taylor, Scott M. Mclennan
Department of Geosciences Faculty Publications
Graduates in geology, geochemistry and geophysics will find this book a valuable reference text. The book begins by describing the known composition of the present upper crust, then deals with possible compositions for the total crust and the inferred composition of the lower crust. The question of the uniformity of crustal composition throughout geological time is discussed, the rate of growth of the crust and the effects of extraction of the crust on mantle compositions are considered. Finally, the question of early pre-geological crusts on Earth is debated and comparisons are given with crusts on the Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus …
