The Taarblin Experience : A Planned Approach To Soil Conservation, Greg Astbury, Owner/Manager Of Taarblin, Tim Negus
Bulletins 4000 -
Many farms in Western Australia were cleared and developed before there was a full and clear understanding of the effects of bush clearing - that is salinization of soil and water supplies, wind and water erosion, waterlogging and soil structure decline. The productive capacity and inherent problems of the different soil types was also largely unknown.
Modern-day Conservation Farm Planning aims to provide a blue-print for the redevelopment of properties to ensure long term soil fertility, to prevent soil erosion and degradation by waterlogging and salinity. It also provides for a spread of reliable stock watering points and more efficient …

Sedimentology, Sedimentary Petrology, And Tectonic Setting Of The Lower Miocene Clallam Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Kurt Soe Anderson
WWU Graduate School Collection
The Lower Miocene Clallam Formation, located on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, is an approximately 800 m thick sequence of sandstone and conglomerate that was deposited in the predominantly marine portion of a prograding delta.
As a whole, the Clallam Formation coarsens and shallows upward, progressing from fossiliferous sandstones deposited below wave base, through storm-dominated deposits characterized by climbing ripples, graded rythmites, and hummocky cross-stratification, to coarse-grained distributary mouth deposits. Within this general progression are several small-scale coarsening- and shallowing-upward cycles that reflect the occupation and subsequent abandonment of distributary channels.

Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu
Combined Translational-Rotational Jumps In Solid (Alpha)-Co And Co(,2), Shang-Bin Liu
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Combined translational-rotational jumps in two orientationally ordered solids, (alpha)-CO and CO(,2), have been measured using C('13) NMR. In the Pa3 structure of these solids, a molecule which jumps to a neighboring (presumably vacant) site will reorient, due to the orientationally ordered structure.;The rates of translation and rotation have been measured independently by using different NMR techniques. The rotations were detected at high field (14.7 MHz) through the modulation of the chemical shift anisotropy; spin echoes and stimulated echoes were used. The translational jumps modulate the dipolar interactions and were studied at low fields (1.256 MHz) with line narrowing and Slichter-Ailion …
First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei
First Principles Structure Calculations Using The General Potential Lapw Method, Su-Huai Wei
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
We have developed a completely general first principles self-consistent full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave (LAPW) method program within the density functional formalism to calculate electronic band structure, total energy, pressure and other quantities. No symmetry assumptions are used for the crystal structure. Shape unrestricted charge densities and potentials are calculated inside muffin-tin (MT) spheres as well as in the interstitial regions. All contributions to the Hamiltonian matrix elements are completely taken into account. The core states are treated fully relativistically using the spherical part of the potential only. Scalar relativistic effects are included for the band-states, and spin-orbit coupling is included using a …

Water Well Pump Efficiency Monitor Units, Calvin G. Clyde, Duard S. Woffinden, Graeme Duncan
Water Well Pump Efficiency Monitor Units, Calvin G. Clyde, Duard S. Woffinden, Graeme Duncan
Reports
Indroduction: As the costs for pumping municipal, industrial and irrigation water rise, owners and the public area giving increased attention to energy conservation. One way to conserve energy is to operate water pumps at or near peak efficiency. The measurement of pump efficiency usually requires a special test equipment, a skilled operator and time to perform the test. Owners may find it more economical to waste power than to monitor for inefficiencies. One way to help change this situation is to develop inexpensive equipment for unskilled people to use to obtain rapid measurements of pump efficiency under typical operating conditions. …

Delineation Of Landslide, Flash Flood, And Debris Flow Hazards In Utah, David S. Bowles
Delineation Of Landslide, Flash Flood, And Debris Flow Hazards In Utah, David S. Bowles
Reports
During 1982, 1983, and 1984, abnormally wet conditions in Utah triggered flash floods, landslides, and debris flows. Pore pressures built in hillside soils below melting snows and during prolonged periods of rainfall until the mass suddenly gave way, sometimes as a landslide and other times as a non-Newtonian debris flow that moved rapidly long distances down mountain slopes until finally stiffened by moisture loss or velocity loss because of flatter gradients. Also, runoff from heavy rainfall bursts picked up weathered and other loose material that accumulated on land surfaces over long dry periods . The sediment laden waters flowed out …
Problems Of Small Privately Operated Water Companies In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Frank W. Haws
Problems Of Small Privately Operated Water Companies In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Frank W. Haws
Reports
Although one in seven domestic water supply systems in Utah are privately owned and operated, they are characteristically small with 94 percent serving populations of less than 1,000. Per capita costs of service vary greatly but become relatively high for locations that are remote, where terrain and climate are extreme, where scale economies are absent, and where materials and skills for system repair and replacement are not locally available. Statistics indicate that the incidence of water quality violations relate strongly to system size. Yet corrections are often more difficult to achieve because well trained and full time operators cannot be …

A Methodology For Estimating Instream Flow Values For Recreation, Parvaneh Amirfathi, Rangesan Narayanan, A. Bruce Bishop, Dean Larson
Reports
Water flowing in streams has value for various types of recreationists and is essential for fish and wildlife. Since water demdns for offstream uses in the arid west have been steadily increasing, increasing instream flows to enhance the recreational experience might be in conflict with established withdrawals for uses such as agriculture, industries, and households. Since market prices are not observable for instream flows, the estimation of economic value of instream flow would present well known difficulties. The household production function theory was used to build the theoretical model to measure economic value of instream flow. A representative sample of …
Optimal Configuration Of Regional Water Supply Systems (Wasopt2) , Mohamed L. Al-Eryani, Trevor C. Hughes
Optimal Configuration Of Regional Water Supply Systems (Wasopt2) , Mohamed L. Al-Eryani, Trevor C. Hughes
Reports
Any water supply system can be conceptualized as consisting of three componenets--source development facilities (including treatment), transmission facilities, and a distribution network. The scope of this report is limited to the first two--the source related facilities upstream from the distribution network. In the mathematical modeling of regional rural systems, the number of variables, and hence the size of the model, increases rapidly as the number of system componenets and their alternative designs increase. Regardless of the method of solution, manual preparation of large models is cumbersome and is vulnerable to human error both in the computations of the matrix coefficients …

High Dispersion Untraviolet Spectra Of The Peculiar Star Rx Puppis, Menas Kafatos, A. G. Michalitsianos, R. P. Fahey
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
High spectral resolution observations of the peculiar star RX Puppis obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer suggest the presence of a complex gaseous ring system which surrounds an accreting hot secondary. The anomalous line intensity ratio of the C IV A.A-1548, 1550 doublet during the observations exceeded the optically thick limit, implying the presence of a high-velocity wind. Additionally, the C IV doublet exhibits about four or five narrow emission components, which are redshifted up to velocities of at least - + 300 km s -I (with respect to the rest wavelength).

The R Aquarii System At Optical And Radio Wavelengths, J. M. Hollis, Menas Kafatos, A. G. Michalitsianos, H. A. Mcalister
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Observations of the symbiotic binary R Aquarii environment were obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 2, 6, and 20 em at the same epoch. The observed spectral index and strong linear polarization reveal that emission from the compact double radio source discovered in previous observations is nonthermal; thus, this source is not associated with R Aquarii but is an extragalactic background object. The spectral index of the compact nebula surrounding R Aquarii indicates that the emission is thermal and the nebula is ionized by an unseen, hot companion to the Mira-like variable R Aquarii. As expected, this region …

Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to compare the sandstone composition and trace element geochemistry between samples representing the Summit Creek sandstone, Naches, Chumstick, and Carbonado Formations in order to determine if these sediments were all derived from the same provenance, and to determine the composition of the source rocks in hopes to identify the present day location of the source areas.
Structure And Evolution Of The Horse Heaven Hills In South-Central Washington, Michael Curtis Hagood
Structure And Evolution Of The Horse Heaven Hills In South-Central Washington, Michael Curtis Hagood
Dissertations and Theses
The Horse Heaven Hills uplift in south-central Washington consists of distinct northwest and northeast trends which merge in the lower Yakima Valley. The northwest trend is adjacent to and parallels the Rattlesnake-Wallula alignment (RAW; a part of the Olympic-Wallowa lineament). The northwest trend and northeast trend consist of aligned or en echelon anticlines and monoclines whose axes are generally oriented in the direction of the trend. At the intersection, folds in the northeast trend plunge onto and are terminated by folds of the northwest trend.
