Creating Havoc: Havoc Development Program, David Cohn, Stephen Madancy Jan 1985

Creating Havoc: Havoc Development Program, David Cohn, Stephen Madancy

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

One area where use of the computer is essential is in the modern scientific laboratory. High speed computation, data storage and data analysis enable scientists to perform experiments that would otherwise be impractical. A problem inherent to the effective use of special purpose laboratory computers, however, is the fact that this equipment has generally been developed for highly specific uses, and has either tried to cope with existing high-level languages or has abandoned the attempt and required the user to program in a low-level assembly or machine language. Our idea was to design, develop and implement a programming language that …

Designing A Relational Data Base For A Problem Solving Environment, Kathryn S. Dawson Jan 1985

Designing A Relational Data Base For A Problem Solving Environment, Kathryn S. Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

When choosing a system design in which to solve a recurring problem which depends on interrelated data a relational data base environment should be considered. The original problem can be solved through this design and by allowing users to view the data in the relational constructs the data can be easily used in numerous other applications. Theoretical support insures the design is sound avoiding inaccurate results. Independence between the logical and physical views of the data enables the data base administrator to adjust the physical data structures in order to optimize system performance without affecting existing user applications.

Computer-Aided Normalizing And Unpacking: Some Interesting Machine-Processable Transformations Of Legal Rules, Layman E. Allen, Charles S. Saxon

Book Chapters

One way of dealing with an important aspect of the natural language barrier that researchers m artificial intelligence have been wrestling with for more than two decades is to normalize the expression of the logical structure of legal rules.

The computer program, NORMALIZER, will enable a legal analyst to automatically generate Normalized Versions of legal rules and Outlines of them from Parenthesized Logical Expressions of their structure and Marked Versions of the Original Text of the rules. In brief:

Parenthesized Logical Expression & Marked Version = = > Outline & Normalized Version.

The Parenthesized Logical Expression of a normalized rule is …

Trans Diequatorially Fused 3',3'-Diphenyl-2'-Morpholinone Derivatives Of 2-Amino-2-Deoxy-D-Glucose, Julian Guardado Puentes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The chemistry of amino sugar compounds has been studied in the last years in connection with the study of natural products, and many of them have been isolated. 57,17,18 Amino sugars play an important role in biochemistry, forming blocks of homo- and heteropolymers and complex molecules such as microbial polysaccharides, enzymes, gangliosides, glycoproteins, and antibiotics.

This research project had the purpose of preparing a derivative of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose, with a free hydroxyl group at the anomeric carbon, with the 4,6-positions blocked with the benzylidene cyclic acetal, and the 2,3-positions being blocked by a 3,3-diphenyl-2-morpholinone ring trans diequatorially fused to the amino …

Influence Of Basis Set On The Calculated Properties Of (H3n–Hcl), Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner Jan 1985

Influence Of Basis Set On The Calculated Properties Of (H3n–Hcl), Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The structure of (H3N–HCl) is investigated by ab initio calculations using a number of different basis sets ranging from minimal to split valence. The effects of including a diffuse sp shell and d orbitals on Cl are considered as well. The geometries of the complex and the isolated subunits are fully optimized. Minimal basis sets (STO‐3G, STO‐6G, and MINI‐1) lead to an overestimate of the interaction between the subunits. Addition of d functions produces only a marginal improvement. The 3‐21G, 3‐21+G, MIDI‐1, and LP‐31G split‐valence sets erroneously predict an ion pair …

Comparison Of Proton Transfers In (S2h5)+ And (O2h5)+, L. Bigham, Steve Scheiner Jan 1985

Comparison Of Proton Transfers In (S2h5)+ And (O2h5)+, L. Bigham, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The energetics and electronic rearrangements associated with proton transfer between S atoms in (H2S–H–SH2)+ are calculated using ab initio molecular orbital methods and compared with similar data in the first‐row analog (H2O–H–OH2)+. The full potential energy surface of (S2H5)+, calculated as a function of the H‐bond length as well as the position of the proton, contains two equivalent minima separated by a small energy barrier, whereas the surface of (O2H5)+ contains a single minimum corresponding to a symmetric …

Contribution Of Dispersion To The Properties Of H2s‐‐Hf And H2s‐‐Hcl, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner Jan 1985

Contribution Of Dispersion To The Properties Of H2s‐‐Hf And H2s‐‐Hcl, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Ab initio calculations are carried out using a doubly polarized basis set. Dispersion, evaluated by second‐order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), is found to have a profound influence on the stabilities and structures of the H‐bonded complexes. The contribution of dispersion to the H‐bond energies of H2S‐‐HF and H2S‐‐HCl is 44% and 69%, respectively, placing this attractive term second in magnitude only to electrostatics. Reductions of the intermolecular distance of 0.17 and 0.34 Å result from inclusion of correlation effects. Nevertheless, the influence of dispersion upon the angular characteristics of the …

Computerized Scanning Auger Microprobe, T. J. Sommerer, Edward Boyd Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An Auger spectrometer has been automated using a microcomputer. Fundamental considerations in the design and choice of the computerized system are presented and should be of general interest. The spectrometer was a Physical Electronics Ind. model 545 scanning Auger microprobe. The microcomputer chosen was a Southwest Technical Products 6809 computer system. Hardware details are discussed with emphasis on the four computer-spectrometer interface boards. These boards are (1) Auger energy control board, which sets the Auger detection energy with its 16 bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC); (2) read Auger signal board, which reads the Auger signal intensity with its 12 bit analog-to-digital …

Interaction Of Electric And Magnetic Charges: Addendum, I. Adawi Jan 1985

Interaction Of Electric And Magnetic Charges: Addendum, I. Adawi

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of a head-on collision between a spherically symmetric electric and magnetic charge is reconsidered. The assumption of the equality of the electric and magnetic forces made earlier is abandoned as it does not follow from the model. It is shown that the rotational angular momentum a charge acquires is determined by the amount of the angular momentum which the charge removes from the field by virtue of its extension. The interaction energy of each charge with the dipole it induces in the other charge is equal to the rotational energy of the charge itself. This results in simple …

Electron Capture By Slow Alq+ Ions Colliding With Hydrogen, R. A. Phaneuf, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Total electron-capture cross sections have been measured for collisions of Alq+ (q=210) with H and H2 in the 20120-eV/amu energy range. The general trend of the cross sections for both H and H2 is an approximately linear increase with ionic charge state. The Al2++H and Al3++H systems were investigated theoretically using the molecular-orbital method with a pseudopotential to represent the Al3+ ion core. Coupled-channel calculations realize good agreement with experiment. An anomalously small cross section for Al2++H is attributed to the fact that of the 1 and 3 entrance channels, only the 1 …

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Quantitative characterization of the intensity pulsations from an inhomogeneously broadened laser confirm that observed irregular pulsing has its origins in deterministic chaos corresponding to motion on a strange attractor of low fractal dimensionality. The pointwise information dimension and the Grassberger-Procaccia K2 (estimators from below of the fractal dimensionality of the attractor and the Kolmogorov entropy, respectively) have been determined for digitized time series from parameter regions identified qualitatively by power spectra as representing periodic, period-doubled, quasi-periodic, and chaotic behavior. Some amount of chaos seems present for almost all operating conditions.

Underground Water Supplies In The Wheatbelt, T T. Bestow Jan 1985

Underground Water Supplies In The Wheatbelt, T T. Bestow

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Underground water originates from rainfall. The size of the underground recource in any region is broadly related to the amount of rainfall. However, rainfall intensity and seasonal distribution are just as importent as the quality. A relatively small annual fall which consists of a series of heasvy showers or storms close together, may be a more effective source of recharge to underground water than a larger fall that is more evenly distributed over a longer period.

A large annual rainfall, however, is no guarantee that underground water supplies will be readily available. This is because soils and the underlying rocks …

Drainage And The Law, G A. Robertson Jan 1985

Drainage And The Law, G A. Robertson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Drainage is being increasingly used in Western Australia as an attempted cure for land salinisation and waterlogging. This is nor surprising as drainage is a technical approach that has, in some cases, improved saline land and reduced the effects of waterlogging. However, drainage is not always successful or cost-effective. A detailed site assessment is required before any large or costly drainage system is attempted. Articles in this issue of the Journal of Agriculture discuss that aspect in detail.

Richmond Crater James River Water Quality Management Program, Final Report 1984-85 And Summary, Toxic Organics In Sediments : A Final Report To Richmond Regional Planning District, C. L. Smtih, P. O. Defur, R. J. Huggett

Reports

The following report contains detailed results of analyses of sediment grabs and cores from the James and Appomattox rivers and some nearby locations for a spectrum of organic toxics. Some data has been previously reported in interim progress reports, but will be included for completeness. A study of variability of replicate samples taken at a single station (JR4). not included in the proposal, presents possible limitations of interpretation of temporal and station to station results. Finally, a comprehensive summary of toxic organics in the sediments of the James River and certain tributarjes over a two-year period will be presented.

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For Certain Homology 3-Spheres To Have Smooth Zp-Actions, Erica Flapan

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a broad class of homology 3-spheres, obtained as the gluing of two knot complements, to have Zp-actions.

We explore when a homology sphere, obtained as the gluing of two knot complements has any smooth periodic diffeomorphisms.

Infinitely Periodic Knots, Erica Flapan Jan 1985

Infinitely Periodic Knots, Erica Flapan

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

One aspect of the study of 3-manifolds is to determine what infinite group actions a given manifold has. Some important questions that one can ask about these actions on a given manifold are: What periods could they have? and, what sets of points may be fixed by the action?
