Concepts And Implications Of Interactive Recovery, Robert F. Gordon Ph.D., George B. Leeman Jr, Clayton H. Lewis

Faculty Works: MCS (1984-2023)

RC 10562 (#47293)

When working interactively on the computer, it is valuable to be able to undo a series of commands in order to return to a previous state. We identify contradictions and limitations in the basic concepts of undo. We introduce three types of undo functions with which we examine the characteristics of undo, explain these limitations, and determine the minimum requirements for a recovery facility. Then we discuss the implications of undo for user interfaces and suggest au.xiliary functions to display and simplify the resulting history structure and to view and recover prior states.

Narrow 0+ State In 20Ne And 06+ And 07+ Rotational Bands, H. T. Richards, G. Caskey, J. H. Billen, S. R. Riedhauser, Daniel J. Steck

Physics Faculty Publications

A reanalysis of old data removes the (0+,2+) ambiguity for a very narrow state at Ex(20Ne)=11.55 MeV and gives a unique 0+ assignment. Such a 0+ state corresponds well to a predicted state at 11.494 MeV of unusually small reduced widths for decay to both the ground and first excited state of 16O. This new 0+ state is a better 06+ band head for the 8p-4h states at 15.159 MeV (6+) and 18.538 MeV (8+) than the currently accepted 0+ state …

Multiplicities are compared for4He evaporation in reactions of40Ar and56Fe projectiles (8.5 MeV/u) with withnatAg and238U targets. Coincidence requirements involving fusion-fission and projectile-like fragments have been used to select separate entrance-channel spin zones. Evaporation-like4He emission from the composite nuclei is shown to be large for mean spins ≦100ℏ, and to decrease dramatically with increasing spin. Coincidence measurements between two4He particles have also been studied for40Ar+natAg. This requirement is shown to select reactions that lead to evaporation residues and therefore to a zone of relatively low spin. The shapes of the4He spectra provide an interesting probe of the mechanism and also of …

An Image Processing Software Package For The Laser Scanning Phase Modulation Microscope, William J. Murray

Computer Science Technical Reports

This thesis documents the most recent effort to develop a user-friendly image processing software package for the Laser Scanning Phase Modulation Microscope (LSPMM). The LSPMM is composed of three integrated subsystems, the Laser Scanning (LS) system, the Phase Modulation (PM) system, and Digital Image Acquisition (DIA) system. Under the control of the image processing software, the DIA system can receive and store the digital image data, display the image on a monochrome monitor, and process the image to provide the microscopist with quantitative information regarding the image. The implementation of this image processing software package required the specification of a …

A Simple Model For Impurity Photoabsorption In Silicon, Gust Bambakidis Jun 1984

A Simple Model For Impurity Photoabsorption In Silicon, Gust Bambakidis

Physics Faculty Publications

A simple model for absorption of infrared radiation by impurity atoms in silicon crystals has been developed and applied to electronic excitations ofthe Group V donors Bi, Sb, As, and P, and the Group III acceptors B, AI, Ga, and In. The model is based on the quantum-defect method for approximating bound donor or acceptor wave functions outside the core region of the impurity. For each donor species, the relative oscillator strengths have been calculated for the transitions from the ground state to the first four excited levels. For each acceptor species, the relative oscillator strengths were calculated for transitions …

The Development Of An Optical Ph Sensor Based On Fluorescence, Kimberley Ann Forbes Jun 1984

The Development Of An Optical Ph Sensor Based On Fluorescence, Kimberley Ann Forbes

Honors Theses

We are interested in developing optical pH sensors based on the fluorescence of an immobilized fluorophor confined on the end of a bifurcated fiber optic. Such optical pH sensors have several potential advantages: they should be inherently less sensitive to electrical noise than conventional pH electro1es, they require no reference electrode, and they make possible remote measurements. The fluorophors evaluated are bound electrostatically to an ion exchange membrane which is then attached to the common end of a bifurcated fiber optic, The fluorophor is excited through one arm and the fluorescence emission is passed through the other arm of the …

The Preparation Of Cyclic Organic Carbonyl Compounds From Ƞ5-Cyclopentadienyltetracarbonylvanadium And Substituted Acetylenes, Ronald C. Newbold Jun 1984

The Preparation Of Cyclic Organic Carbonyl Compounds From Ƞ5-Cyclopentadienyltetracarbonylvanadium And Substituted Acetylenes, Ronald C. Newbold

Honors Theses

Studies on the reactivity of many transition metal carbonyl complexes with various acetylenes have generated significant interest in the field of organometallic chemistry, but little effort has been put forth to make use of these compounds as genuine organic reagents. Most metal carbonyl compounds generate both organic and organometallic products, where oxidative cleavage becomes necessary to obtain the organic moiety. (35-c5H5)v(CO)4 is an oxygen-sensitive carbonyl complex which has been shown to thermally react with bis-(pentafluorophenyl)acetylene to produce cyclic carbonyl compounds in high yield, particularly the quinone derivative, with few organometallic products. The thermal reactivity of (35-c5H5)v(CO)4 is characterized with various …

Determination Of Aldehydes In Ambient Air By High Performance Liquid Chromatography With Fluorescence Detection, Carol B. Berman Jun 1984

Determination Of Aldehydes In Ambient Air By High Performance Liquid Chromatography With Fluorescence Detection, Carol B. Berman

Honors Theses

Two methods for the determination of aldehydes in ambient air were investigated. The methods involved derivatization of the aldehydes by 2-diphenylacetyl-1,3-indandione-1-hydrazone (DAIH) and 1-dimethylaminoaphthalene-5-sulfonylhydrazine (dansylhydrazine) in acetonitrile solution. The deriviatives were then separated by high performance liquid chromatography and detected and quantified by flourescence detection. The DAIH method was found to be unsuitable and was therefore abandoned. The dansyl hydrazine method was found to be a potentially uncomplicated, rapid, and senstitive procedure for the detection of aldehydes.

Conformational Energy Calculations On Valinomycin, Rachel J. Cohen Jun 1984

Conformational Energy Calculations On Valinomycin, Rachel J. Cohen

Honors Theses

The antibiotic action of the ionophore valinomycin is a result of its ability to preferentially bind potassium ions and transport them across cellular membranes. Complexation is solely due to the molecular structure of this cyclic depsipeptide. In solution, the molecule exists in different conformers depending upon solvent polarity. Exact knowledge as to the structure of valinomycin in the aqueous and lipid cellular layers is thus difficult to determine. Many spectral studies of valinomycin have been undertaken utilizing a variety of instrumental methods and conformations existing in different solvents have been proposed. We have performed energy minimization procedures on these structures. …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The nebula ejected in the 1934 outburst of the classical nova DQ Her is remarkable for its unprecedentedly low temperature of Te 500 K as measured by Williams et al. (1978). In this paper, IUE observations are combined with Steward optical spectra. It is confirmed that the gas is quite cold. It is further shown that the gas is ionized by the radiation field of the central object. X-ray, ultraviolet, optical and infrared observations of the underlying binary are combined with the extreme-ultraviolet continuum deduced from the level of ionization of the nebula to obtain a composite energy …

Synthesis And Spectral Studies Of Amides Of 9-Anthroic Acid, Juliana Rodgers Jun 1984

Synthesis And Spectral Studies Of Amides Of 9-Anthroic Acid, Juliana Rodgers

Honors Theses

The fluorescence energy, shape of the fluorescence spectrum, and the fluorescence efficiency of 9-anthramide (9-CONH2) and N,N-diethyl-9-anthramide (9-CONEt2) have been investigated as a function of solvent. For the 9-CONH2, the Sl energy decreases and the fluorescence spectra become structureless at the polar and nonpolar extremes of the solvent scale. This unusual solvent-dependent fluorescence behavior for 9-CONH2 is explained by a significant geometry change subsequent to excitation, whereby the exocyclic group rotates about the anthracene rings. In contrast, 9-CONEt2 shows solvent-independent behavior. The Sl energy generally remains constant and the fluorescence spectra show well-defined vibrational structure in a wide variety of …

Detection And Quantification Of Atmospheric Carbonyl Compounds, Peter Gerard Schulam Jun 1984

Detection And Quantification Of Atmospheric Carbonyl Compounds, Peter Gerard Schulam

Honors Theses

Ambient air aldehyde analysis was performed in Schenectady, NY. The Technique, as prescribed by Kuntz et. Al. (7), entailed the trapping of the volatile aldehydes as their 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone derivatives in an acetonitrile solution. The derivatives were then separated on a reversed phase HPLC column and detexted by UV absorption at 254 and 360 nm., simultaneously. The air in Schenectady was found to contain formaedehyde and acetaldehyde at concentrations which ranged from .70 to 30.5 ppb and below that of detection to 1.6 ppb, respectively. Formaldehyde's daily average in Schenectady was 7.6 ppb. The formaldehyde and acetaldehyde levels at Whiteface Mtn. …

Comments On The Geologic History Of The Ogallala Formation In The Southern Panhandle Of Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jun 1984

Comments On The Geologic History Of The Ogallala Formation In The Southern Panhandle Of Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The southern Panhandle of Nebraska and the adjoining parts of southeastern Wyoming and northeastern Colorado are unusual places to examine the geologic history of the Ogallala Formation because they are much closer to the source areas of much of the sediment which makes up the unit than are other sites along the Ogallala outcrop belt. This study in Nebraska combined with results of earlier work there, in southeastern Wyoming, and ; northeastern Colorado, outlines the complex cut and fill history of the Ogallala close to Rocky Mountain source areas.

Parts of the Ogallala consist of fills of sand and gravel, …

The Prospects Of The Kra Canal, Pannarai Chuapibul

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The controversies over the prospects of the Kra Canal persuade me to write my major paper about it. Ever since the Thai government rejected the proposals for construction of the canal, the press has criticized that the actual reason why the government rejected the canal proposals was because of its fear of the irredentist movement with complete disregard of the enormous benefits of raising our balance of payments and standard of living. Nevertheless, there must be other important reasons. My opinions, which do not reflect those of the Thai government are based on problems of sources of capital, advantages and …

Mix Design Investigation - Roller Compacted Concrete Construction, Upper Stillwater Dam, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation Jun 1984

Mix Design Investigation - Roller Compacted Concrete Construction, Upper Stillwater Dam, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Dams

Upper Stillwater Dam will be the first concrete dam constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation utilizing the RCC (roller compacted concrete) construction technique. RCC is concrete with zero slump consistency, which is deposited in horizontal lifts and consolidated in place by a smooth drum vibrating roller. This method of construction was first proposed in the early 1970's [1, 2, 3]* and was demonstrated successfully in emergency spillway repairs at Tarbela Dam, Pakistan [3], in the construction of Shimajigawa Dam, Japan, and Willow Creek Dam, Oregon.

Barbados Ridge; Inner Trench Slope Sedimentation, William J. Cleary, H. Allen Curran, Paul A. Thayer Jun 1984

Barbados Ridge; Inner Trench Slope Sedimentation, William J. Cleary, H. Allen Curran, Paul A. Thayer

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Quaternary sediments of this inner trench slope are chiefly foraminiferal-pteropod-nanno oozes that have been reworked and/or emplaced by gravity currents. These oozes are mixed with volcanogenic sediments and minor amounts of material derived from the insular shelf. Reworking occurs on topographic highs where fines are winnowed out and mass wasting and gravity currents are initiated; these processes ultimately result in the leveling of irregular floors of deeper, intervening slope basins. Petrographic analyses of graded intervals from the basin floors and slopes reveal the sands to be mixtures of planktic foraminifers (35%), pteropods (10%), and fresh, angular volcanic detritus (10-90%). On …

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi Jun 1984

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A formula for the stopping power of neutrinos interacting via the standard weak-interaction model, but incorporating the possibility of neutrino oscillations among the three flavors, is derived. The results are applied to study the solar-neutrino anomaly and it is found that the anomaly cannot be accounted for by many orders of magnitude from consideration of the energy losses of the neutrinos interacting with the solar matter, even if the oscillation hypothesis is found to be valid.
