General Formula For The Inelastic Scattering Of Relativistic Spin-½ Particles By Heavy Atoms, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, S. A. Long Jun 1984

General Formula For The Inelastic Scattering Of Relativistic Spin-½ Particles By Heavy Atoms, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, S. A. Long

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A general differential-cross-section formula for the inelastic scattering of relativistic spin-½ particles by heavy atoms is derived in the Born approximation and the structure and polarization of the incident particle is incorporated. The results reduce to those of Fano (1963) and of Turner et al. (1973) in well-known limiting cases.

Expressive Power In First Order Topology, Paul Bankston Jun 1984

Expressive Power In First Order Topology, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A first order representation (f.o.r.) in topology is an assignment of finitary relational structures of the same type to topological spaces in such a way that homeomorphic spaces get sent to isomorphic structures. We first define the notions "one f.o.r. is at least as expressive as another relative to a class of spaces" and "one class of spaces is definable in another relative to an f.o.r.", and prove some general statements. Following this we compare some well-known classes of spaces and first order representations. A principal result is that if X and Y are two Tichonov spaces whose posets of …

Low-Temperature Magnetic Properties Of Submetallic Phosphorous-Doped Silicon, C. T. Murayama, W. G. Clark, Jeff Sanny

Physics Faculty Works

Measurements of the electron-spin-resonance properties of Si:P with dopant concentration of n=2.05×1018 cm−3 (somewhat below the metal-insulating transition) at low temperatures (0.035 to 4.2 K) and low frequencies (11.5-58.2 MHz) are reported. They show a substantial deviation from Curie-law behavior for the susceptibility, in agreement with previous static experiments. An internal field is observed to develop as the temperature is lowered. At 35 mK, the internal field has a magnitude of 2.1 Oe and is directed opposite to the externally applied field. The buildup of the internal field is accompanied by an increase in the resonance linewidth. Both …

Electrochemical Studies Of Antimony(Iii) And Antimony(V) In Molten Mixtures Of Aluminum Chloride And Butylpyridinium Chloride, Dhia A. Habboush, Robert A. Osteryoung Jun 1984

Electrochemical Studies Of Antimony(Iii) And Antimony(V) In Molten Mixtures Of Aluminum Chloride And Butylpyridinium Chloride, Dhia A. Habboush, Robert A. Osteryoung

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

Electrochemical studies of Sb, Sb(III), and Sb(V) have been camed out in molten mixtures of AlC13 and N-1-butylpyridinium chloride (BuPyCl) at 40 OC, as a function of melt composition. Analysis of measurements in the acidic melts indicates SbC12+ as the dominant species. The reduction of this species on glassy carbon exhibits irreversible behavior. In the basic melts, SbC14- and SbC1,- are believed to be the dominant species. The reduction of Sb(II1) to Sb on glassy carbon also showed irreversible behavior while its oxidation to Sb(W revealed a quasi-reversible behavior. No Sb(II1) oxidation was observed in the acidic melts.

Palynology And Age Of The Alvord Creek Formation, Steens Mountain, Southeastern Oregon, Stephen F. Barnett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The age of the Alvord Creek Formation of Steens Formation, southeastern Oregon, has been a center of controversy since Axelrod's 1944 paleobotanical assignment of a Lower Pliocene age to the tuffaceous leaf-bearing shales. This date varies from earlier determinations by Chaney and MacGinitie that the flora was Mascall (Upper Miocene) equivalent. However, it is more sharply contradicted by the report of a Middle Miocene (Barstovian) fauna in the apparently overlying Steens Basalt and by a 21.3 m.y. radiometric date obtained on a basalt flow 61 meters above the leaf-bearing beds.

Palynomorphs recovered from three exposures of the leaf-bearing beds show …

The Effect Of Dietary Alpha - Linolenic Acid On Apparent Risk Factors Of Cardiovascular Disease, Kelvin D. Lindbeck

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Eight healthy male lacto-ovo-vegetarian subjects averaging 28.0 ± 3.6 years of age (22 to 53 years) were fed a diet rich in α-linolenic acid (18:3 ω 3) for four weeks. Arterial blood pressure and body weight were recorded each week. Plasma 6-keto-prostaglandin F (6-keto- PGF ), thromboxane B2 (TXB2), total cholesterol, triglyceride, and total phospholipid fatty acid composition were analyzed at 0, 2 and 4 weeks.

Systolic blood pressure increased significantly between weeks 0 and 1 (106.5 ± 2.7 mmHg to 114.0 ± 3.7 mmHg; p < 0.003), but decreased to 107.3 t 2.6 mrHg (p < 0.02) at week 2. There was an insignificant increase in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures after four weeks. There was no significant change in either total cholesterol or triglyceride levels during the four weeks.

Plasma 6-keto-PGF levels increased significantly from 60.13 ± …

Isotropy Group Description Of A Phase Transition In Nano3, W. Scott Stornetta, Dorian M. Hatch Jun 1984

Isotropy Group Description Of A Phase Transition In Nano3, W. Scott Stornetta, Dorian M. Hatch

Faculty Publications

Predictions of the possible post-transition symmetries of an R 3c zone center continuous phase transition are made using recent extensions of the Landau theory. The Landau theory is summarized and direct group theoretical methods are applied to the R 3c phase. General techniques for solving systems of nonlinear polynomial equations are reviewed and these techniques are applied to the minimization of the free energy F for the aforementioned possible symmetries. The results of the direct methods and the minimization procedures are shown to be compatible. It is shown that the transition to R 3c in NaNO3 is consistent with the …

Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen Jun 1984

Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The diagnosis and treatment of third molars has often been cited as a special problem to the orthodontist. If the prognosis of third molars could be determined, orthodontic treatment could progress on a more positive basis.

This study was designed to provide a method of deciding whether developing third molars will erupt or become impacted.

Records from 130 orthodontically treated cases of Dr. Fredsall8 were studied. Several factors were evaluated and measured using the patients' cephalometric radiographs.

The actual fate of the third molars were recorded in the hope it could be used to predict what to expect from …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Substituent Effects On Stabilization Energies Of Strained And Unsaturated Molecules, Tyler Arthur Stevenson May 1984

Quantitative Evaluation Of Substituent Effects On Stabilization Energies Of Strained And Unsaturated Molecules, Tyler Arthur Stevenson

Theses

Thermodynamic stabilization energies are presented for a series of monosubstituted vinyl, cyclopropyl, ethynyl, and phenyl compounds. The energies are calculated using ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the 4-31G level, and also with published experimental heat of formation data. Correlation analyses are then attempted with the dual substituent parameter approach with the stabilization energies. The analyses are also attempted with a triple-parameter approach using Topsom's theoretically calculated X, F, and Ro constants. Among the findings are the facts that π-donating substituents correlate well, while π-accepting substituents do not. Indications of the relative sensitivities of hydrocarbon frameworks to substituent electrostatic and …

Derivatives Of Trifluorovinylsulfur Pentafluoride And F-(Tert-Butyl) Hypochlorite, Jo Ann Marie Canich May 1984

Derivatives Of Trifluorovinylsulfur Pentafluoride And F-(Tert-Butyl) Hypochlorite, Jo Ann Marie Canich

Dissertations and Theses

Trifluorovinylsulfur pentafluoride dimerizes to (SF5CFCF2)2 in the presence of cesium fluoride. Two derivatives of trifluorovinylsulfur pentafluoride, SF5CF(CF3)C(O)F and SF5CF(CF3)C(O)NH2, were used to prepare the new compounds, SF5CF(CF3)CO2H and SF5CF(CF3)CN, respectively. The first was prepared by reacting the SF5-acid fluoride with water, while the second involved the abstraction of water from the SF5-amide using P4O10. The attempted preparation of a bis-pentafluorosulfur ketone and a pentafluorosulfur containing acid anhydride …

Geology, Alteration And Mineralization Of A Silicic Volcanic Center, Glass Buttes, Oregon, Michael James Johnson May 1984

Geology, Alteration And Mineralization Of A Silicic Volcanic Center, Glass Buttes, Oregon, Michael James Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Glass Buttes, a Pliocene silicic volcanic complex within the High Lava Plains province of Oregon, was erupted approximately 5.0 to 5.8 million years ago. Geologic mapping revealed that the eastern portion of the complex is underlain by rhyolitic glass domes, flows and rare pyroclastic flows. Basalt flows are interlayered with and onlap the silicic glass. Younger basalt flows, erupted from local vents, overlie silicic glass and onlapping basalts.

The eastern end of Glass Buttes is hydrothermally altered at the surface; a weak geothermal anomaly coincides with the altered areas. Alteration, localized by northwest trending normal faults, occurs primarily as opalite …

Effect Of Nickel Impurities On Charge-Density-Wave Formation In Tas3, M.H. Rashid, David J. Sellmyer, Roger D. Kirby May 1984

Effect Of Nickel Impurities On Charge-Density-Wave Formation In Tas3, M.H. Rashid, David J. Sellmyer, Roger D. Kirby

Roger Kirby Publications

Introduction of nickel impurities into TaS3 has the effect of smearing the charge-density-wave transitions in TaS3 of both orthorhombic and monoclinic phases. The orthorhombic doped crystals show non-Ohmic conductivity beyond threshold fields that are much larger than the threshold field of the pure phase, possibly due to additional pinning of the charge-density wave by nickel impurities. The charge-density-wave state is completely destroyed as 10 at % or more Ta atoms are replaced by Ni atoms and metallic behavior between 4.2 and 30 K is observed in these cases.
