Critical Amplitude Of The Potts Model: Zeroes And Divergences, Miron Kaufman, David Andelman Apr 1984

Critical Amplitude Of The Potts Model: Zeroes And Divergences, Miron Kaufman, David Andelman

Miron Kaufman

The critical amplitude of the q-state Potts-model free energy is studied as a function of q in two dimensions and on the diamond hierarchical lattice. The amplitude diverges at an infinite number of q values, qn,introducing logarithmic terms in the free energy. We expect that in each interval (qn,qn+1) there is a q value where the amplitude vanishes, affecting the singularity of the free energy as a function of temperature. Possible consequences for gelation and vulcanization of polymers are discussed.

Homogeneous Nucleation Rate For Water, Donald E. Hagen, James L. Kassner Apr 1984

Homogeneous Nucleation Rate For Water, Donald E. Hagen, James L. Kassner

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Homogeneous nucleation rate data for water extending over an exceptionally large domain of rate (J), supersaturation ratio (S), and temperature (T) was recently published. Because it spans a large J-S-T surface, this data constitutes a good test of nucleation theory. Here classical nucleation theory is used to analyze this data. By adjusting only the sticking coefficient, we are able to obtain a good fit between theory and experiment. It was necessary to include an increase in the water molecular density associated with the finite water compressibility.

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Transition Metal Complexes Prom Mixtures Of Poly Pyrazolyl Borates, Robert Matthew Alway Apr 1984

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Transition Metal Complexes Prom Mixtures Of Poly Pyrazolyl Borates, Robert Matthew Alway

Masters Theses

This is a report of the synthesis and separation of transition metal complexes of hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)- borate and hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazolyl)borate. These complexes contain a central metal ion and two tridentate ligands, one hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate and one hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazolyl)borate. Mass spectrometry proved to be an extremely useful technique for identifying products. Many mass spectra are included and discussed extensively.

Complexes containing hydrobis(pyrazole)(3,5-dimethyl -1-pyrazolyl)borate and hydrobis(3,5-dimethyl-l-pyrazole) (pyrazolyl)borate also were synthesised and mass spectra obtained.

The Chromospheres Of Classical Cepheids. 11. High-Resolution Profiles Of The Mg Ii H And K Lines, Edward G. Schmidt, Sidney B. Parsons Apr 1984

The Chromospheres Of Classical Cepheids. 11. High-Resolution Profiles Of The Mg Ii H And K Lines, Edward G. Schmidt, Sidney B. Parsons

Edward Schmidt Publications

High-resolution spectra have been obtained with the long-wavelength camera of the International Ultraviolet Explorer for five Cepheids at a number of phases each. These data were used to study the profiles of the Mg II h and k lines near 2900 Å. An emission feature often appears at the centers of the two lines. There are also central absorption features due to circumstellar or interstellar gas. They are often multiple and may or may not divide the emission into two peaks. The velocities of the circumstellar absorption components imply that they originate in a region which is at least several …

The Chromospheres Of Classical Cepheids. 111. A Search For Transition Region Emission Lines, Edward G. Schmidt, Sidney B. Parsons Apr 1984

The Chromospheres Of Classical Cepheids. 111. A Search For Transition Region Emission Lines, Edward G. Schmidt, Sidney B. Parsons

Edward Schmidt Publications

In previous studies of Cepheid chromospheres with the IUE, we found that the chromospheric emission is strongly dependent on the period of the star and varies substantially through the cycle. For the shortest period star in our sample, δ Cep, we were able to detect little significant chromospheric emission in the short wavelength region, and we were only able to detect transition region emission in the longest period star, 1 Car. However, the upper limits on these emissions were slightly above expected flux levels for nonvariable stars. To detect them or place lower and physically more interesting limits on …

A Search For Chromospheric Emission In Tu Cassiopeiae Spectra, Arne A. Henden, Robert H. Cornett, Edward G. Schmidt Apr 1984

A Search For Chromospheric Emission In Tu Cassiopeiae Spectra, Arne A. Henden, Robert H. Cornett, Edward G. Schmidt

Edward Schmidt Publications

We have searched high-resolution spectra of the multimode cepheid TU Cas for evidence of chromospheric emission. Spectral regions covered include the Ca II near-IR triplet near 8600 Å, Hα, CanII H and K, Mg II h and k; phase coverage in both primary and secondary modes was reasonably complete. There was no evidence for changes other than those caused by temperature variation. The observed lack of emission makes unlikely current mass loss (and resulting helium enrichment) by means of stellar winds.

Group Comparability: A Multiattribute Utility Measurement Approach To The Use Of Random Assignment With Small Numbers Of Aggregated Units, C. Anderson Johnson, John W. Graham, Brian R. Flay, William B. Hansen, Linda M. Collins Apr 1984

Group Comparability: A Multiattribute Utility Measurement Approach To The Use Of Random Assignment With Small Numbers Of Aggregated Units, C. Anderson Johnson, John W. Graham, Brian R. Flay, William B. Hansen, Linda M. Collins

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

It is not always possible, especially in large-scale evaluation research, to ensure that random assignment will produce groups that are comparable on any number of potentially important factors. Typically, gaining comparability has been achieved only at the expense of random assignment. A method is presented that allows multivariate comparability while making only minimal restrictions on randomization. The procedure is demonstrated in the context of assigning 63 aggregated units (schools) to 28 experimental and control conditions. Good comparability of groups for all primary main effects and interactions was verified for 15 individual variables.

Weed And Feed, William W. Witt, Harold B. Rice Apr 1984

Weed And Feed, William W. Witt, Harold B. Rice

Soil Science News and Views

Fertilizer and herbicide combinations are often applied prior to planting, at planting, or after crop emergence, a procedure sometimes called "weed and feed". The opportunities for utilizing this system are numerous with the major advantage being saving an extra trip across the field. In order for the system to work, it must ensure that both fertilizer and herbicide are present when needed. When both the crop plant and weedy plant are at growth stages which allow for compatible applications with a single treatment, this can be highly successful. Conversely, when these two plant systems are not at compatible growth stages, …

Causes Of Soil Compaction And Ways To Minimize Them, Lloyd W. Murdock Apr 1984

Causes Of Soil Compaction And Ways To Minimize Them, Lloyd W. Murdock

Soil Science News and Views

In order for a soil to become compacted, two conditions must be present, pressure and a soil that will compact . Different soils have different compaction characteristics. Sandy loam soils compact most readily; however, most soils with a high percentage of sand compact easily. Silt loam soils are more resistant to compaction, but they too are easily compacted when wet. When silt loam soils are not wet, it requires high pressure to compact them. When the soil is wet, each particle is lubricated and less pressure is required to compact the soil. Clayey soils can be compacted; but, as they …

The Chromatic And Cochromatic Number Of A Graph, John Gordon Gimbel Apr 1984

The Chromatic And Cochromatic Number Of A Graph, John Gordon Gimbel

Dissertations

Clearly, there are many ways that one can partition the vertex sets of graphs. In the first chapter of this work I examine the problem of determining, for a given graph, the minimum order of a vertex partition having specified properties. In the remaining chapters I concentrate on partitions of two types--those in which each subset induces an empty graph and those in which each subset induces an empty or a complete graph.

The chromatic number of a graph G is the minimum number of subsets into which V(G) can be partitioned so that each subset induces an empty graph. …

Peccei-Quinn Symmetry As Flavor Symmetry And Grand Unification, Aharon Davidson, V. Parameswaran Nair, Kameshwar C. Wali Apr 1984

Peccei-Quinn Symmetry As Flavor Symmetry And Grand Unification, Aharon Davidson, V. Parameswaran Nair, Kameshwar C. Wali

Publications and Research

We consider the possibility of identifying the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry as also the flavor symmetry in multigenerational grand unification schemes. The essential ingredient, a global, axial U(1) symmetry in the PQ mechanism to avoid the strong CP-violation problem provides useful constraints on the fermion —Higgs-boson couplings in the theory, thereby leading to identical "canonical" forms for fermion mass matrices in both the charged sectors. These forms are the conjectured Fritzsch-type matrices exhibiting the "nearest-neighbor" interactions in generation space. From among the popular schemes for grand unification, SO(10) emerges as one which has several advantages over the others for constructing multigenerational …

Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer Apr 1984

Ixtoc I: Case Study Of A Major Oil Spill, Peter G. Myer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The most disastrous oil spill the western hemisphere has ever witnessed occurred during the 10 months between June 1979 and March 1980, when the experimental well IXTOC I blew out off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The disaster's effects on South Texas virtually destroyed a year's earnings for the region's tourism industry and cut into the profits of many commercial fishermen. The activities at the well that caused the blowout and subsequent spill, the effects of the oil on Texas' Gulf Coast, and the legal attempts to recover against losses suffered as a result of the spill will be …

U. S. Arctic Oil: A Perspective, William T. Decamp Apr 1984

U. S. Arctic Oil: A Perspective, William T. Decamp

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The United States Arctic, for the purposes of this study, encompasses the seabed and subsoil under the resource jurisdiction of the United States, including the Bering Sea offshore, and the Hope Basin, Chukchi (Barrow Arch) and Beaufort (Diapir Field) Seas, and land territory north of the Brooks Range onshore. Although U.S. credibility with its Arctic allies would be enhanced by its becoming a party to the Law of the Sea Convention, this remote possibility is not a prerequisite for a successful U.S. Arctic Policy. It is more important that U.S. policy goals are perceived among its Arctic allies as being …

An Spectrometer For Investigating The Spectral Momentum Density Of Thin Films, A. L. Ritter, John R. Dennison, J. Dunn Apr 1984

An Spectrometer For Investigating The Spectral Momentum Density Of Thin Films, A. L. Ritter, John R. Dennison, J. Dunn

All Physics Faculty Publications

An (e, 2e) spectrometer has been constructed for detecting scattered and recoiling electrons from a thin solid film. The cross section for observing the two electrons in coincidence is proportional to the spectral momentum density of the target. In this spectrometer the energy of the incident electron beam is 25 keV and the beam current is approximately 40 μA. The energy resolution (FWHM) is ≤4 eV. The momentum resolution (FWHM) can be varied from 0.2 to 1.0 Å1. Preliminary coincidence data from an amorphous carbon film are presented.

Structural Geology Of The Northern Snowcrest Range, Beaverhead And Madison Counties, Montana, Mark Kenneth Sheedlo Apr 1984

Structural Geology Of The Northern Snowcrest Range, Beaverhead And Madison Counties, Montana, Mark Kenneth Sheedlo

Masters Theses

The Snowcrest Range was uplifted in Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary time as a consequence of thrusting in Precambrian basement and Phanerozoic cover rocks.

The Snowcrest-Greenhorn thrust system is associated with largescale overturned, eastward verging folds. Mean orientation of the thrust system is N.40°E., 35°N.W.. The trend of the thrust system and associated transverse faults appear to be controlled by earlier structures. Mesoscopic and microscopic analyses indicate that metamorphic basement rocks accommodated congressional strain largely by brittle faulting and cataclastic shearing. Kinematic indicators suggest that local stresses were directed east-southeastward.

Northeast-trending Neogene faults along the western flank of the range …

An Improvement In The Performance Of A Learning System For Finite State Machines, Lea F. Fuller Apr 1984

An Improvement In The Performance Of A Learning System For Finite State Machines, Lea F. Fuller

Masters Theses

A learning system is examined which is capable of learning a finite state machine from a class of finite state machines based on the observed behavior of the machine. The size of the search space becomes very large as the number of states in the machine increases. The size of the search space quickly becomes the limiting factor in the size of the class of machines which may be learned. An investigation is made of methods to improve the performance of the learning system. The application of a depth first approach to the development of the search space is shown …

A Query-Processing Optimization Strategy For Generalized File Structures, Donna Marie Kaminski Apr 1984

A Query-Processing Optimization Strategy For Generalized File Structures, Donna Marie Kaminski

Masters Theses

In processing a Boolean query against a non-inverted file, a subset of the query's keys must be selected. Only the records satisfying these keys need to be retrieved from the file. A dynamic programming algorithm, the Dual-to-minDF, is developed here for arriving at the optimum set of keys, i.e., the minimum number of external record retrievals. Previously suggested greedy methods yield feasible solutions which may or may not be optimal. This algorithm has exponential time complexity. However, it is useful for applications involving relatively short queries with duplication of keys within different conjuncts, and in cases where the files have …

Partial Radiative Recombination Cross Sections For Excited States Of Hydrogen, Patricia M. Fazio Apr 1984

Partial Radiative Recombination Cross Sections For Excited States Of Hydrogen, Patricia M. Fazio

Physics Theses & Dissertations

In calculating the radiative recombination cross sections for interstellar H II regions usually only the electric dipole term in the expansion of the interaction Hamiltonian is kept. However, conditions present in these regions permit recombination into highly excited states and the "effective size" of the atom is not much less than the wavelength of the emitted photon. These physical conditions do not meet the requirements for making the dipole approximation. A higher order approximation is to keep an additional term in the expansion of the Hamiltonian, and, therefore, to include contributions of quadrupole transitions in the calculation of the partial …

An Examination Of The Variability Of Migratory Timing Statistics Estimated From Catch And Effort Observations, Arthur J. Butt Apr 1984

An Examination Of The Variability Of Migratory Timing Statistics Estimated From Catch And Effort Observations, Arthur J. Butt

OES Theses and Dissertations

The estimate of the mean arrival time based on catch or CPUE of fishes migrating into a fixed harvest area is a function of the number of days fished. Simulation studies using chinook salmon catch and effort data from the Yukon River delta, Alaska indicate that fishing effort concentrated at the tails of the migratory distribution which would tend to erroneously weigh the estimated mean arrival time in the direction of the sample, away from the true mean, is only a significant problem when the number of days open to fishing is small, covering less than 12% of the total …

A Geophysical Investigation Of A Possible Astrobleme In Southwestern Michigan, Suhas L. Ghatge Apr 1984

A Geophysical Investigation Of A Possible Astrobleme In Southwestern Michigan, Suhas L. Ghatge

Masters Theses

A circular pattern to the oil production in Calvin Township, Cass County, Michigan, absence of about 1200 feet of Ordovician sediments and uplift indicated by a deep drill hole in the center of the productive area and absence of anomalies on the regional gravity and magnetic maps led to detailed gravity and magnetic surveys over this structure to delineate it and provide information regarding its genesis.

The Bouguer gravity and magnetic anomaly maps show no anomaly associated with the structure. The 28-mile wavelength second harmonic residual gravity and magnetic maps show linear features in the area. Two dimensional gravity modeling …

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott Apr 1984

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott

Faculty Publications

Error bounds for Gaussian quadrature are given in terms of the number of quadrature points and smoothness properties of the function whose integral is being approximated. An intermediate step involves a weighted-L' polynomial approximation problem which is treated in a more general context than that specifically required to bound the Gaussian quadrature error.

An Intraseason Forecasting System For Commercial Marine Fisheries, Erik J. Barth Apr 1984

An Intraseason Forecasting System For Commercial Marine Fisheries, Erik J. Barth

OES Theses and Dissertations

The reliability of an intraseason yield estimation technique which is commonly used by Pacific salmon harvest managers is evaluated for applicability to a variety of commercial finfish and crustacean fisheries. The estimation technique is known as the average timing or the average performance model. The method is not easily related to standard statistical models, but does show some similarity to both a single parameter linear regression model and the ratio estimator of sampling theory. A comparison of these models, a two parameter linear model, and a regression estimator is made to determine if the precision of forecasts of performance can …

An Investigation Of Refractive Index Of Solutions Of Ammonia And Water At Various Concentrations And Temperatures, Effendy Arif Apr 1984

An Investigation Of Refractive Index Of Solutions Of Ammonia And Water At Various Concentrations And Temperatures, Effendy Arif

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Refractive index of ammonia-water solutions is investigated experimentally (for (lamda) = 632.8 nm) and semi-empirically (for (lamda) = 589.3 and 632.8 nm) in ammonia-weight concentration of up to 30%, over a temperature range of 20 to 60(DEGREES)C. The experiment employs a specially designed and built refractometer that measures the displacement of a laser beam due to refraction in the test solution. The refractive index is then deduced from the beam displacement. Based on the experimental data, the refractive index is correlated empirically with the concentration and temperature. A semi-empirical investigation is developed based on the Lorentz-Lorenz equation and the additive …
