Photoaffinity Labeling Of The Antimycin Binding Site In Rhodopseudomonas Sphaeroides, Emily Wilson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to identify the site of interaction of antimycin with the ubiquinone-cytochrome b-c1 oxidoreductase in the photosynthetic bacteria, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. To accomplish this goal, three areas of research were undertaken: the synthesis of a radiolabeled, photoaffinity analog of antimycin, identification of the inhibitory characteristics of this analog, and the photoaffinity labeling of the antimycin binding site. All three areas were accomplished.
The major finding of this study was the identification of an 11,000 dalton polypeptide as the predominantly labeled protein. Although this polypeptide was not exclusively labeled, it was consistently labeled and showed competition …

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Seismographs near Mount St. Helens Volcano recorded an earthquake swarm lasting nearly 2 months prior to the catastrophic May 18, 1980, eruption. The earthquakes are divided into four classes based on station CPW (Δ = 116 km) seismogram characteristics: (1) events with Sv:P amplitude ratio >3 and dominant frequency >3 Hz; (2) events with Sv:P ratio between 1 and 3 and dominant frequency >2 Hz; (3) events similar to characteristic 2 but with a strong (probably surface wave) phase just after the S phase; and (4) events with frequencies between 1 and 2 Hz lacking a clear S phase. The …
The Genus: A Macroevolutionary Problem, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman
The Genus: A Macroevolutionary Problem, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
This paper centers on the macroevolutionary problem surrounding the concept of the vertebrate genus. We have been fascinated by the apparent tendency of members of a genus to have the same shape in contrast to the great differences in shape among genera at the family level. If this is true, genera would be considered shape conservative groups. Our initial view of this contrast in shape variation within and among genera leads us to question whether the same evolutionary processes that produce genera can simply be extended to produce families. To approach this question two things need to be done. First, …

Structure And Petrology Of Tertiary Volcanic Rocks In Parts Of Toms Cabin Spring And Lucin Nw Quadrangles (Box Elder Co.), Utah, Bruce Edward Scarbrough
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A series of late Tertiary rhyolitic and dacitic flows, domes, and minor pyroclastic rocks form an elongate volanic mass along the northwestern Utah-northeastern Nevada border. The structure of the flow banding and the linear arrangement of vents indicate that the mass represents a multi-sourced extrusive complex which erupted through many fissure-type conduits. A 39 km2 area at the southern end of the mass was studied in detail in order to gain a better understanding of the eruptive nature and history of these Tertiary volcanic rocks. Age dating reveals that volcanism in the study area was episodic, and covered a …

Desulfurization Of Coal Using Carboxylic Acids & Peracids, Dwight Watson
Desulfurization Of Coal Using Carboxylic Acids & Peracids, Dwight Watson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Bituminous coals were desulfurized by leaching in a 325 ml, agitated, autoclave with hot, dilute solutions of carboxylic acids, buffered carboxylic acids, carboxylic salts, and carboxylic salt:alkali combinations. The partial pressure of oxygen was not increased as it was found not to increase the amount of organic sulfur removal. The effect of increasing carboxylic size and decree of desulfurization was studied. Among the carboxylic acids studied, formic acid removed the greatest amount of organic sulfur;and iso-valeric acid removed the greatest percentage of pyritic sulfur. It was found that there is a direct correlation between the amount of organic sulfur removal …
The Low-Temperature Pyrolysis Of A Nitrated North Dakota Lignite, Dennis Spears
The Low-Temperature Pyrolysis Of A Nitrated North Dakota Lignite, Dennis Spears
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Low-temperature pyrolysis is the thermal degradation of coal in an inert atmosphere at temperatures below 700°C. Coal pyrolysis is well-studied, being a complex mix of many reactions. Pyrolysis is affected by changes in many different process variables, such as temperature, pressure and heating rate. Low-temperature pyrolysis is an old and well-studied process.
Chemical pretreatments have been used to beneficiate conversion processes, inducln pyrolysis. Nitration has not been one of them. Pyrolyzing a nitrated coal would, hopefully, rapidly devolatilize the coal and break up the matrix into more commercially usable products. The nitration procedure developed by The Standard Oil Company minimizes …

Spontaneous Heating Of Coal & Electrochemical Measurements Of Corrosion Rates, Bihan Naderi
Spontaneous Heating Of Coal & Electrochemical Measurements Of Corrosion Rates, Bihan Naderi
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A new and relatively fast method for measuring the susceptibility of coal to spontaneous heating was studied in this work.
This method is based on the ability of coal to adsorb iron(III) from aqueous solutions. The more iron taken up by the coal, the more susceptible the coal is to spontaneous heating. The relationship holds for most of the coals being analyzed during this research project and for other succeeding ones.
The experimental procedures used and results obtained are discussed. A brief literature survey of other applied methods which have been studied, including a description of many factors affecting the …

Non-Matrix Corrected Organic Sulfur Determination In Coal By Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Carol Clark
Non-Matrix Corrected Organic Sulfur Determination In Coal By Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Carol Clark
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A method for non-matrix corrected organic sulfur analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy has been developed using petroleum coke standards. This technique capitalizes on the fact that when a substance is excited by an electron beam it will emit photons of electromagnetic radiation in the X-ray range. The emitted X-rays are characteristic of the excited elements in the substance. Typically, electron beam microanalysis is a rapid, nondestructive analytical technique to quantitatively measure organic sulfur in coal. The results show good correlation to ASTM values for numerous well characterized bituminous coals with a wide range in total and pyritic sulfur content. …
Corrosion Of Carbon Steel In Synthetic Coal Liquid Wash Waters, Keith Evans
Corrosion Of Carbon Steel In Synthetic Coal Liquid Wash Waters, Keith Evans
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Potentiodynamic corrosion measuring technique is an electrochemical analytical method which measures corrosion rates of a metal exposed to a corrosive environment.
The corrosion characteristics of carbon steel A1044 in aqueous solutions of aniline hydrochloride, simulating a coal liquid wash water, were determined by this method. The effects of solution velocity and oxygen concentration on the system were also determined.
A bimodal corrosion rate effect was observed in deaerated solutions of 1000 and 5000 ppm chloride as aniline hydrochloride. This effect was interpreted to be the result of the formation of a film on the surface of the specimen.

Further Comments On The Nature And Developmental History Of Quaternary Pumpkin Creek, Banner, And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The occurrence of Quaternary anorthosite-rich sand and gravel deposits in south-central Morrill County, Nebraska, supports the idea that Pumpkin Creek formerly flowed farther east than it does today. This eastern extension of the creek was abandoned when another headward cutting tributary of the North Platte River cut through the divide between Pumpkin Creek and the North Platte just east of Jail and Courthouse rocks and captured Pumpkin Creek.
Unusual clast types found in Quaternary deposits along Pumpkin Creek in Banner County may be used to determine some characteristics of the streams that carried them. For example, armored mud balls and …

We show that a recently proposed multigenerational, grand unified model with three parameters (top-quark mass and two phases of Higgs vacuum expectation values) yields results in good agreement with the most recent phenomenological limits placed on the weak mixing angles of the quarks. These limits take into account the experimental value for B-meson life-time.

The Effects Of Mowing On The Rodent Community Of A Native Tall Grass Prairie In Eastern Nebraska, Cliff A. Lemen, Mary K. Clausen
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Although fires are an integral part of prairie ecology (Bragg and Hulbert 1976, Daubenmire 1968, Rice and Parenti 1978, Zimmerman and Kucera 1977), there is evidence that mowing can serve at least some of the functions of fire (Hover and Bragg 1981) in prairies. Mowing, in fact, has two major advantages over burning. First there is no need for large crews to control the fire, and second the hay produced can be used as a cash crop. Because mowing is an attractive alternative to burning for prairie preserves it is important to determine the effects of mowing on the prairie. …
