Velocity Measurements Of Humans By Computers, J. B. Rafert, R. C. Nicklin Jan 1984

Velocity Measurements Of Humans By Computers, J. B. Rafert, R. C. Nicklin

Faculty Publications

Distance and time, two fundamental quantities, are discussed early in most introductory physics courses. By dividing a change in distance by time to get velocity, and by dividing a change in velocity by time to get acceleration, two more important quantities result. With these the real world of automobiles and jet planes and applications of Newton's second law is available for interpretation from an analytical point of view. In order to get students thinking reliably about these important ideas it seems important to have direct measurements of distance and time over short enough intervals to talk sensibly about "instantaneous" velocities.

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Fluoride Perovskites, An Undergraduate Experiment In Solid State Chemistry, Richard H. Langley, Colleen K. Schmitz, Maureen B. Langley

Faculty Publications

In light of the increasing importance of solid state chemistry, an experiment dealing with at least some aspects of this rapidly expanding area should he included in advanced chemistry laboratories. Herein is described one of the experiments that we have developed to meet this need. This experiment was designed for a senior level integrated chemistry lab taken by all our chemistry majors. Normally six to eight hours are needed to complete this experiment. This experiment deals with the synthesis and characterization of a perovskite. Perovskites were chosen because compounds with this structure are important in solid state technology, and since …

Historical Crop / Climate Relationships In South Dakota, D.G. Kenefick, J.C. Harlan, K.K. Weischedel, P.D. Evenson

Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science Publications

Crop performance and climatic records were collated for high production counties in South Dakota to evaluate the effects of temperature and precipitation on yields. The crops involved were corn, soybeans, sorghum, oats, spring wheat, and winter wheat. Records were compared for the period from 1965 to 1982. The computer data file for each county includes seven climatic parameters, dates of plant development, adjusted yield-and yield rank by year. The crop/climate record for the 17-year period was evaluated in sixteen counties per crop each year. Thus, 272 county x year observations were made for each crop, except for soybeans which involved …

Optimal Stochastic Scheduling Of Power Generation Systems With Scheduling Delays And Large Cost Differentials, G. L. Blankenship, J.-L. Menaldi Jan 1984

Optimal Stochastic Scheduling Of Power Generation Systems With Scheduling Delays And Large Cost Differentials, G. L. Blankenship, J.-L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The optimal scheduling or unit commitment of power generation systems to meet a random demand involves the solution of a class of dynamic programming inequalities for the optimal cost and control law. We study the behavior of this optimality system in terms of two parameters: (i) a scheduling delay, e.g., the startup time of a generation unit; and (ii) the relative magnitudes of the costs (operating or starting) of different units. In the first case we show that under reasonable assumptions the optimality system has a solution for all values of the delay, and, as the delay approaches zero, that …

Dissociative Attachment To Rovibrationally Excited H2, J. M. Wadehra Jan 1984

Dissociative Attachment To Rovibrationally Excited H2, J. M. Wadehra

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Using a local-width resonant model, the cross sections for dissociative attachment of low-energy electrons to a rovibrationally excited H_2 molecule in its ground electronic state are obtained. There are 294 such rovibrational levels. Only the contribution of the ^2Σ_u^+ resonant state of H^−_2 to the attachment process is investigated. Assuming a Maxwellian distribution for electron energies, the dissociative attachment cross sections are converted into attachment rates for various rovibrational levels of H_2. A significant enhancement of attachment rates occurs for endoergic reactions only, and the maximum possible rate for attachment to the ground electronic state of H_2 is about 10^(−8) …

Prediction Of Pneumonia In Outpatients With Acute Cough - A Statistical Approach, Paula Diehr Jan 1984

Prediction Of Pneumonia In Outpatients With Acute Cough - A Statistical Approach, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Cough is the fifth most common reason for physician visits, but data on acute cough have rarely been collected in a standardized manner and have not been analyzed in a multivariate fashion. We report data on 1819 patients presenting with cough, all of whom received a standardized history and physical, and a chest X-ray. Only 48 (2.6%) were found to have an acute radiographic infiltrate (pneumonia). The prevalence of common signs and symptoms is shown for the patients with and without pneumonia. Thirty-two of these findings were significant predictors of pneumonia (p less than 0.05, one-tailed). These 32 did not …

Use Of Ambulatory Care Services In Three Provider Plans: Interactions Between Patient Characteristics And Plans, Paula Diehr Jan 1984

Use Of Ambulatory Care Services In Three Provider Plans: Interactions Between Patient Characteristics And Plans, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

A previous study of low-income enrollees in a closed-panel health maintenance organization (HMO) and a Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BC/BS) plan showed that the effect on the use of health services of the age, sex, health status, previous health care use, race, and family size of the enrollees was different in the two plans. We have replicated this study using the same two provider plans but studying a different group of white collar, middle class enrollees. A third plan, an experimental independent practice association (IPA), was also available for analysis. Utilization was defined as use (yes/no) and the quantity of use …

The Biases And Mean Squared Errors Of Estimators Of Multinormal Squared Multiple Correlation, Joseph F. Lucke, Susan E. Embretson Jan 1984

The Biases And Mean Squared Errors Of Estimators Of Multinormal Squared Multiple Correlation, Joseph F. Lucke, Susan E. Embretson

Joseph Lucke

The sample squared multiple correlation coefficient, $R^{2}$ is known to have certain unsatisfactory properties as an estimator of the population squared multiple correlation. Hence, numerous adjusted estimators based on functions of $1-R^{2}$ have been proposed. We examine the biases and mean squared errors of five adjusted estimators as well as $R^{2}$. General results are given for estimators linear in $1-R^{2}$, and four such estimators are examined in detail. In addition, a quadratic estimator and the minimum variance unbiased estimator are examined. Comparisons among these estimators are made in terms of absolute bias and mean squared error.

Preliminary Age Classification Of Landslides For Inventory Mapping, James P. Mccalpin Jan 1984

Preliminary Age Classification Of Landslides For Inventory Mapping, James P. Mccalpin

James P. McCalpin

A preliminary age classification for landslides is proposed for inventory mapping, based on morphologic criteria visible on aerial photographs. Because landslide scars and deposits are generally disequilibrium landforms, they progress through observable morphologic stages as they age. Four age classes are distinguished: 1) active; 2) inactive-young; 3) inactive-mature; 4) inactive-old. Each age class reflects the age of latest movement only. The morphologic "freshness" of each part of the landslide must be evaluated, including: the head scarp, lateral scarps, marginal drainage, internal scarps and blocks, internal drainage pattern, vegetation type and density, and toe morphology. Morphologic parameters defined from air photos …

Spectral Properties Of Selfadjoint Ordinary Differential Operators With An Indefinite Weight Function, Branko Ćurgus, H. Langer Jan 1984

Spectral Properties Of Selfadjoint Ordinary Differential Operators With An Indefinite Weight Function, Branko Ćurgus, H. Langer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Spectral properties of the equation l (f ) - λrf = 0 with an indefinite weight function r are studied in LI2rl . The main tool is the theory of definitizable operators in Krein spaces. Under special assumptions on the weight function, for the operator associated with the problem, the regularity of the critical point infinity is proved. Some relations to full- and half-range expansions are indicated.

A Note On Irreducibility And Weak Covering Properties, Joe Mashburn Jan 1984

A Note On Irreducibility And Weak Covering Properties, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A space X is irreducible if every open cover of X has a minimal open refinement. Interest in irreducibility began when Arens and Dugendji used this property to show that metacompact countably compact spaces are compact. It was natural, then, to find out what other types of spaces would be irreducible and therefore compact in the presence of countable compactness or Lindelof in the presence of N1-compactness. …

It is shown in this paper that T1 δθ -refinable spaces and T1 weakly δθ-refinable spaces are irreducible. Since examples of Lindelof spaces that are neither T1 nor …

Urban Lead In Minnesota: Soil Transect Results Of Four Cities, Howard W. Mielke, Sara Burroughs, Randall Wade, Timothy Yarrow, Paul W. Mielke Jan 1984

Urban Lead In Minnesota: Soil Transect Results Of Four Cities, Howard W. Mielke, Sara Burroughs, Randall Wade, Timothy Yarrow, Paul W. Mielke

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The focus of this field study was the development of a soil collection and analysis method for the rapid assessment of urban lead (Pb) buildup in four Minnesota cities, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, and Rochester. The results show that soil Pb buildup is mainly a function of urban size, although specific geographic factors, such as a bluff that constrains city development along a narrow corridor, also play a role in Pb distribution and concentration. Maximum urban Pb concentrations were approximately 25, 70, and 100 times rural soil Pb levels, in Rochester, Duluth, and the centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul …

The Response Of Invertebrates In Temporary Vernal Wetlands To Altosid Sr-10 As Used In Mosquito Abatement Programs, Ronald W. Lawrenz Jan 1984

The Response Of Invertebrates In Temporary Vernal Wetlands To Altosid Sr-10 As Used In Mosquito Abatement Programs, Ronald W. Lawrenz

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Three temporary vernal wetlands on the Bayport Wildlife Management Area in eastern Washington County, Minnesota, were divided by sandbag barrier into treatment and control areas. Designated areas were treated with Altosid® SR-10 briquets at standard mosquito control rates. Invertebrate populations were monitored weekly using net sweeps, column samples, and ocular estimates.

The development of Eubranchtpus bundyi, Lyncerus sp, and Daphnia sp., the three major components of the invertebrate fauna, was delayed by as much as one week in site 47. Similar developmental lags were noted for E. bundyi populations in the treated portions of sites 6 and 32. Delay of …

Perturbation Of Periodic Boundary-Conditions, Larry Turyn Jan 1984

Perturbation Of Periodic Boundary-Conditions, Larry Turyn

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider perturbations of the problem (*) - x'' + bx = lambda ax, x(0) - x(1) = 0 = x'(0) - x'(1) both by changes of the boundary conditions and by addition of nonlinear terms. We assume that at lambda = lambda 0 there are two linearly independent solutions of the unperturbed problem (*) and that a(dot) is bounded away from zero. When only the boundary conditions are perturbed either the Hill’s discriminant or the method of Lyapunov–Schmidt reduces the problem to 0 = det ((lambda - lambda 0)A - epsilon …
