Generalized Bhaskar Rao Designs, Clement Lam, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1984

Generalized Bhaskar Rao Designs, Clement Lam, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Generalized Bhaskar Rao designs with non-zero elements from an abelian group G are constructed. In particular this paper shows that the necessary conditions are sufficient for the existence of generalized Bhaskar Rao designs with k=3 for the following groups: │G│ is odd, G=Zr2, and G=Zr2 X H where 3+│H│ and r ≥ l. It also constructs generalized Bhaskar Rao designs with v=k, which is equivalent to v rows of a generalized Hadamard matrix of order n where v ≤ n.

The Directed Packing Numbers Dd(T, V ,V), T ≥ 4, J E. Dawson, Jennifer Seberry, D B. Skillicorn

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

A directed packing is a maximal collection of k-subsets, called blocks, of a set of cardinality v having the property that no ordered t-subset occurs in more than one block. A block contains an ordered t-set if its symbols appear, left to right, in the block. The cardinality of such a maximal collection is denoted by DD(t, k, v). We consider the special case when k=v and derive some results on the sizes of maximal collections.

An Assessment Of Lake Chubsuckers (Erimyzon Sucetta (Girard)) As Forage For Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides (Lacepede)) In A Small Nebraska Pond, Randle A. Winter Jan 1984

An Assessment Of Lake Chubsuckers (Erimyzon Sucetta (Girard)) As Forage For Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides (Lacepede)) In A Small Nebraska Pond, Randle A. Winter

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Lake chubsuckers (Erimyzon sucetta (Girard)) were introduced into two ponds to examine their suitability as a sustainable forage for largemouth bass (Micropterns salmoides (Lacepede)). A summary of lake chubsucker suitability followed the criteria of Bennett and Childers (1966).

Lake chubsuckers were capable of growing larger than the size range for predation by most largemouth bass, however, their growth rate made them vulnerable to largemouth bass for several years. Young of the lake chubsuckers were not available as forage for age 0 largemouth bass. Even though lake chubsuckers possess round bodies and soft rayed fins, this was not demonstrated …

Cenozoic Calcareous Nannofossils From Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 77: Biostratigraphy And Delineation Of Hiatuses, Thomas H. Lang, David K. Watkins Jan 1984

Cenozoic Calcareous Nannofossils From Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 77: Biostratigraphy And Delineation Of Hiatuses, Thomas H. Lang, David K. Watkins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Three of the six Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Leg 77 sites drilled in the western approaches to the Straits of Florida yielded thick sequences of Cenozoic sediment rich in calcareous nannofossils. Hiatuses are prominent in each of these continuously cored intervals. A prominent upper Oligocene hiatus, observed at each of these three sites, can be correlated to a large-scale "global" regression event. Other disconformable horizons present in the study area cannot be positively related to sealevel fluctuations and may be caused by a number of factors including local tectonic activity. Paleogene sections are generally marked by thick accumulations within …

Paleontological Synthesis, Leg 77, David K. Watkins, Charles L. Mcnulty Jan 1984

Paleontological Synthesis, Leg 77, David K. Watkins, Charles L. Mcnulty

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Biostratigraphic age assignment and paleoecological analysis of the sedimentary material recovered on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 77 provide a temporal and paleoenvironmental framework for the reconstruction of the Cretaceous and Cenozoic geologic history of the deep southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Planktonic foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, in conjunction with sedimentologic evidence, indicates the sporadic nature of sedimentation during the Türonian through Holocene throughout the study area. This trend is especially well developed within the Upper Cretaceous, which is largely represented only by a thin, condensed section at a single site. The Cenozoic is somewhat better represented, although the thin, …

Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne Jan 1984

Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Ruby Mountains-East Humboldt Range, one of the interior mountain groups of the Basin and Range Province, lies about midway between the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. After Blackwelder’s description in his review of glaciation in the western mountains, Sharp mapped and named the deposits of the Lamoille and Angel Lake glaciations and correlated them with early and late Wisconsin deposits of the Great Lakes area. The refinement of relative dating (RD) methods, the availability of air photos and modem topographic maps, and new road cuts have aided the restudy of these alpine glacial deposits and the basis for …

Carbon Monoxide-Driven Reduction Of Ferric Heme And Heme Proteins, D. Bickar, C. Bonaventura, J. Bonaventura Jan 1984

Carbon Monoxide-Driven Reduction Of Ferric Heme And Heme Proteins, D. Bickar, C. Bonaventura, J. Bonaventura

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Oxidized cytochrome c oxidase in a carbon monoxide atmosphere slowly becomes reduced as shown by changes in its visible spectra and its reactivity toward oxygen. The 'autoreduction' of cytochrome c oxidase by this procedure has been used to prepare mixed valence hybrids. We have found that this process is a general phenomenon for oxygen-binding heme proteins, and even for isolated hemin in basic aqueous solution. This reductive reaction may have physiological significance. It also explains why oxygen-binding heme proteins become oxidized much more slowly and appear to be more stable when they are kept under a CO atmosphere. Oxidized α …

Modeling Of Laboratory Scale Batch Distillations With A Desktop Computer, Dale F. Johnson Jan 1984

Modeling Of Laboratory Scale Batch Distillations With A Desktop Computer, Dale F. Johnson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A program has been written that simulates the operation of a batch distillation process. The program has been implemented on a Hewlett-Packard 9845T minicomputer and will be used as an instructional aid in a graduate level chemistry course. The program is very user interactive and is capable of using the final conditions from one run as the initial values of the next simulation. The batch simulation is achieved by using a tray-by-tray algorithm and is equipped with three integration techniques; the Euler, the Modified Euler and the 4th order Runge-Kutta methods. The program has the capability for studying the effect …

Non-Linear Oscillation, Automodulation And Anelasticity, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1984

Non-Linear Oscillation, Automodulation And Anelasticity, Tetsuro Suzuki, Manfred Wuttig

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The auto modulation observed in the course of internal friction is discussed as a special example of the universal nature of non-linear oscillations. Universal features of non-linear oscillations are the requirement of energy supply or negative damping and the period doubling route to chaos. The negative damping responsible for the auto modulation is described in terms of the soliton model for twinning deformation. © 1984 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

A Three-Spin Interaction Model, Harry A. Brown Jan 1984

A Three-Spin Interaction Model, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A three-spin interaction in the form of a box product, σ1 x σ2 · σ3, is considered. The thermodynamic behavior is investigated using an effective field theory. A second-order phase transition is found and the magnetization and energy per spin appear to be very similar to those of an ordinary Heisenberg ferromagnet. © 1984.

Electron-Ion Recombination In Gas Mixtures Of Helium, Nitrogen, And Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, Kaare J. Nygaard Jan 1984

Electron-Ion Recombination In Gas Mixtures Of Helium, Nitrogen, And Carbon Dioxide, Ian M. Littlewood, M. C. Cornell, Kaare J. Nygaard

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study has been conducted to determine the electron-ion recombination rates in gas mixtures of helium, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Measurements were made as functions of electric field strength, gas pressure, and gas composition. In gas mixtures containing only nitrogen and carbon dioxide, the rates were dependent on pressure. This dependence is interpreted as being due to the separate effects of two- and three-body recombination processes. No pressure dependence was observed for mixtures containing helium. In such mixtures, two-body recombination appears to be dominant. Moreover, the addition of relatively low concentrations of helium to the discharge leads to a dramatic …

Trophic Dynamics Of A Nebraska Black Crappie And White Crappie Population, Daryl G. Ellison Jan 1984

Trophic Dynamics Of A Nebraska Black Crappie And White Crappie Population, Daryl G. Ellison

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Diet variations of black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) and white crappie (Pomoxis annularis) were investigated at Hayes Center State Lake, a turbid 20-hectare state lake in southwest Nebraska. Zooplankton and insects accounted for most of the diet of all black crappie and of white crappie less than 200 mm long. The daily ration of planktophagic crappie declined to 1.3% as both species approached a length of 200 mm. Black crappie longer than 200 mm did not convert to fish and the daily ration declined to 0.8%. The dietary shift of white crappie to fish significantly increased the …

Oxidation Of Valencene To Nootkatone, Tung F. Chen Jan 1984

Oxidation Of Valencene To Nootkatone, Tung F. Chen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The liquid phase autoxidation of the readily available sesquiterpene valencene to the commercially important perfuming agent nootkatone utilizing gaseous oxygen at atmospheric pressure has been investigated. Catalyst systems involving transition metal salts and complexes, and phase-transfer catalysts have been evaluated under different conditions of valencene concentration, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, solvent and oxygen flow rate. Of eighteen candidate catalysts for the oxidation of valencene to nootkatone, chlorocarbonylbis (triphenylphosphine) iridium (Vaska's catalyst) demonstrated good activity and appeared to show the best potential for future work.

A Two Part Research Report: Aromatic Nucelophilic Fluoroal Koxylation Via Cationic Phase Transfer Catalysis And Reactions Of Unsymmetrical Vinamidinium Salts With Organometallic Reagents, Joseph E. Coury

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses research which was conducted in two areas: the study of aromatic nucleophilic fluoroalkoxylation assisted via cationic phase transfer catalysis and the study of unsymmetrical vinamidinium salts and their reactions with organometallic reagents.

Sodium alkoxides have been successfully used to fluoroalkoxylate activated halo- aryl and heteroaryl substrates under phase transfer catalysis conditions. Optimum reaction conditions incorporated tetra-n-butyl-phosphonium bromide as the catalyst and refluxing toluene as the solvent medium. Different quarternary phosphonium and arrmonium salts have been evaluated as catalysts: also, the effects of activating groups, leaving groups, and nucleophiles have been reported.

The reaction of 3-dimethylamino-3-phenyl-prop-2-en-l-ylidendimethyliminium perchlorate with …

Relation Of Bitumen To Ore In The Magmont West Orebody, Southeast Missouri, Mark Alan Marikos Jan 1984

Relation Of Bitumen To Ore In The Magmont West Orebody, Southeast Missouri, Mark Alan Marikos

Masters Theses

"Bitumen in the form of oil blebs from the Magmont West orebody of the Viburnum Trend was examined and analysed in an attempt to relate hydrocarbon distribution and origin to ore genesis. Hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen percentages were determined by elemental analyses. Trace element composition was determined by emmission spectroscopy and the composition of the bitumen was calculated with respect to aromatic hydrocarbons, saturated hydrocarbons and NSO (nitrogen-sulfur-oxygen) components. The bitumen and kerogen from associated shale samples were evaluated by Rock-Eval pyrolysis and pyrolysis-gas chromatography.

The bitumen was calculated to be approximately 40 to 50 percent aromatic and …

Oil Producing Upper Cherokee And Lower Marmaton (Pennsylvanian) Channel Sandstones Of Jackson And Cass Counties, Missouri, Stephen Thomas Carroll Jan 1984

Oil Producing Upper Cherokee And Lower Marmaton (Pennsylvanian) Channel Sandstones Of Jackson And Cass Counties, Missouri, Stephen Thomas Carroll

Masters Theses

"Approximately 240 gamma ray-neutron logs were interpreted and correlated in an attempt to isolate separate channels collectively referred to as "Squirrel" sands in the upper Cherokee and lower Marmaton (Pennsylvanian) rocks of Jackson and Cass counties, Missouri. Isopach maps were prepared for two of the identifiable fluvial sandstones and a structure map was drawn on the laterally extensive Anna Shale.

The term "Squirrel" has been applied to as many as five different sandstone packages, and thus, has been the source of a great deal of confusion. In an attempt to sort out the confusion this thesis recognizes and defines three …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen Jan 1984

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen

Masters Theses

"Many authors have encouraged the use of modular programming techniques in software development. In fact, there is almost total agreement within industrial and academic circles that modularity is a desirable feature of any software package. Unfortunately, the desirability of modular design is almost always voiced without support from experimental evidence.

This thesis consists of an experiment comparing the resource consumption of programmers based on the modularity practices employed during the design and programming phases of software development. The experiment tests the effectiveness of modularity in reducing psychological complexity of software.

The results of the research show that in some cases …

A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson Jan 1984

A Simple Method For Organizing Nearly Optimal Binary Search Trees, Joy L. Henderson

Masters Theses

"Improving the efficiency of retrieving information concerns users of computer systems involved in many applications- One way of addressing this concern is to organize a sorted sequence into a binary search tree. Knuth's Algorithm K is a bottom-up organization algorithm that always constructs a binary tree which minimizes average search time. However, the cost of executing Algorithm K is prohibitive for a large tree. The aim of this work is to find a less costly method of organizing sorted sequences into nearly-optimal binary search trees.

We present a top-down organization method which yields better average search times than top-down methods …

A Focus Of Attention Algorithm For Expert Systems, Kevin W. Whiting Jan 1984

A Focus Of Attention Algorithm For Expert Systems, Kevin W. Whiting

Masters Theses

"This research is primarily concerned with increasing the performance of expert systems. A refined focus of attention strategy and its affect on performance are discussed. Early expert systems used a brute force approach to process the knowledge base. Each production rule in the knowledge base was evaluated each cycle. More recently, processing efficiency has been increased by focusing the attention of the inference engine on a subset of the rules by "filtering" for further testing, only rules that could possibly fire given the current content of the context base. Focus of attention as developed in this research increases performance over …

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the rationale for a computer program used as a teaching aid, as well as, the design, development, and implementation of that computer program. The program is a prototype that displays, line by line, a graphical depiction of a BASIC program being executed. Icons are used to represent FOR-NEXT loops, the contents of variables, I/O, and other programming elements. The internal logic associated with the Arithmetic-Logic Unit is also represented. The purpose is to produce an environment where the student may visualize the processes occurring in memory by viewing a symbolic portrayal of an executing program. The example …

The Sedimentary Petrography, Depositional Environment And Tectonic Setting Of The Aldwell Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Keith Marcott Jan 1984

The Sedimentary Petrography, Depositional Environment And Tectonic Setting Of The Aldwell Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Keith Marcott

WWU Graduate School Collection

The upper Eocene Aldwell Formation crops out in an east-west trending band across the northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington. Petrographic analyses indicate that the Aldwell Formation has lithologically distinctive eastern and western portions. The rocks of the eastern Aldwell are basalt-rich lithic greywackes; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 5- 22-73 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 1-78-21. The rocks of the western Aldwell are chert-rich lithic arenites; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 27-19-54 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 66-11-23.

Similarities in texture, composition, and alteration products suggest that the basalts of the Crescent seamount province as …

History And Origin Of Debris Torrents In The Smith Creek Drainage, Whatcom County, Washington, Tim L. Syverson Jan 1984

History And Origin Of Debris Torrents In The Smith Creek Drainage, Whatcom County, Washington, Tim L. Syverson

WWU Graduate School Collection

Four debris torrent events have occurred in the Smith Creek drainage since the turn of the century. In 1917, 1949, 1971, and 1983, debris torrents transported large quantities of logs out of the basin onto the delta. Inventories of air photographs of the drainage before and after the three most recent events, combined with field observations after the 1983 event, show that debris torrents in the Smith Creek drainage are closely related to mass movements. Mass movements provide the momentum necessary to mobilize debris in stream channels during periods of heavy run-off, resulting in the formation of debris torrents. Debris …
