A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn Jan 1984

A Membrane-Organic Phase Oxidation Process For The Destruction Of Toxic Organics In Hazardous Wastewaters, Charles E. Hamrin Jr., Dibakar Bhattacharyya, William K. Glynn

KWRRI Research Reports

The examination of the extraction/oxidation of organic solutes in a two phase oxidation process was undertaken to discern the important parameters and the process mechanism of this system. Several parameter were adjusted to measure their effect on the disappearance rate of each organic from the water phase. The water to PFD volume ratio proved to be the most sensitive parameter affecting the disappearance rate, although temperature was also significant. Comparison with one phase oxidation systems demonstrated that the water/PFD system improved on the reduction of organics from the water phase. B-napthol oxidation increased over 50% in a 2/6 water/PFD volume …

Sunspot And Mn Tidal Effects On Stanwell Park, Nsw, Beach Change, 1895-1980, Edward A. Bryant Jan 1984

Sunspot And Mn Tidal Effects On Stanwell Park, Nsw, Beach Change, 1895-1980, Edward A. Bryant

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Beach change on Stanwell Park beach has been linked to sea-level fluctuations and annual rainfall such that a 1-cm rise in sea-level and a 100-mm increase in rainfall results respectively in 0.45m and 0.8m of beach retreat. Both variables are related to the Southern Oscillation, which has worldwide climatic teleconnections. Research in NSW and elsewhere indicates that the 11- and 22-year sunspot cycles and 18.6-year MN lunar cycle may affect some sea-level and rainfall records. None of these astronomical variables was found to relate to beach retreat at Stanwell Park more than any of the meteorological or oceanographic variables.

Monitoring Velocity Variations In The Crust Using Earthquake Doublets: An Application To The Calaveras Fault, California, G. Poupinet, W. L. Ellsworth, J. Frechet

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We present a technique that greatly improves the precision in measuring temporal variations of crustal velocities using an earthquake doublet, or pair of microearthquakes that have nearly identical waveforms and the same hypocenter and magnitude but occur on different dates. We compute differencesin arrival times between seismograms recorded at the same station in the freqency domain by cross correlation of short windows of signal. A moving-window analysis of the entire seismograms, including the coda, gives δ(t), the difference in arrival times versus running time along the seismogram. The time resolution of the method is an order of magnitude better than …

A Shallowing-Upward Sequence In A Pleistocene Coral Reef And Associated Facies, San Salvador, Bahamas, Brian White, Karen J. Kurkjy, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The Sangamon-age Cockburn Town fossil coral reef complex displays a vertical sequence of facies from coral reef and closely associated subtidal carbonate sands, through beach calcarenites, to eolianites. This upward change reflects a progressive lowering of sea level and the eventual emergence of the reef complex into a subaerial environment. The contact between upper beach sediments and eolianites is at +4 m providing a minimum for the sea level high stand. Essentially in situ Acropora palmata suggests a sea level of at least 5 to 6 m above present. These values are similar to Sangamon-age high stands reported from New …

A eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2)-ancillary protein factor Co-eIF-2 promotes displacement of GDP from eIF-2GDP and facilitates ternary complex (Met-tRNAf• eIF-2-GTP) formation in the presence of Mg2+. Heme-regulated protein synthesis inhibitor, HRI, phosphorylates the α-subunit of eIF-2 and thus inhibits ternary complex formation as Co-eIF•2 does not displace GDP from eIF-2α(P)•GDP. RF, a high molecular weight cell supernatant factor, reverses protein synthesis inhibition in heme-deficient reticulocyte lysates and also reverses HRI inhibition of ternary complex formation. RF contains Co-eIF•2 activity. In addition, an active RF preparation contains excess α-subunit of eIF-2 in the free and unphosphorylated …

Armored Mud Balls And Friable Sand Megaclasts From A Complex Early Pleistoceme Alluvial Fill, Southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Armored mud balls and friable sand megaclasts occur in exposures of a complex Early Pleistocene sand and gravel alluvial fill which caps a strath terrace in southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska. The mudballs are limited to a tributary arroyo. The sand megaclasts occur in sediments deposited along a trunk stream. It is possible that the sand megaclasts were transported to the site in a frozen condition.

Evidence For Quaternary Piracy Of Pumpkin Creek, South-Central Morrill County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The occurrence of Quaternary anorthosite-rich sand and gravel deposits in south-central Morrill County, Nebraska, southeast of the mouth of Pumpkin Creek and south of the North Platte River suggests that the creek formerly flowed farther east than it does today. This eastern extension of the creek was abandoned when a headward-cutting tributary of the North Platte River eroded through the divide between Pumpkin Creek and the North Platte just east of Jail and Courthouse rocks, and captured Pumpkin Creek.

The ability to predict the environmental fate and effects of pollutants in the marine environmenits of utmost importance in assessing the hazards posed by a compound's use and/or disposal. Most commonly utilized methods to establish potential environmental effects have involved an assessment with bioassays of a compound's acute and chronic toxicity. For compounds that have the ability to bioaccumulate, the potential dangers from this process must also be determined. A "first cut" estimate can be made by determining the partition coefficients between an organic solvent, usually n-octanol, and water. If this coefficient exceeds 25,000, EPA requires a report of the …

Characterizing The Lsi Yield Equation From Wafer Test Data, Sharad C. Seth, Vishwani D. Agrawal Jan 1984

Characterizing The Lsi Yield Equation From Wafer Test Data, Sharad C. Seth, Vishwani D. Agrawal

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The results of production test on LSI wafers are analyzed to determine the parameters of the yield equation. Recognizing that a physical defect on a chip can produce several logical faults, the number of faults per defect is assumed to be a random variable with Poisson distribution. The analysis provides a relationship between the yield of the tested fraction of -the chip area and the cumulative fault coverage of test patterns. The parameters of the yield equation are estimated by fitting this relation to the measured yield versus fault coverage data.

Fishery Harbor Development: A Case Study Of A Connecticut Coastal Community, Stonington, Connecticut, James L. Wallace Jan 1984

Fishery Harbor Development: A Case Study Of A Connecticut Coastal Community, Stonington, Connecticut, James L. Wallace

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study was undertaken to investigate the problems and procedures encountered in the development of fishery harbors in Connecticut. Harbor facilities along the coast are in great disrepair or have been completely eliminated to allow for more profitable coastal uses. In addition, conflict between recreational and commercial fishermen for existing space has created a shortage of commercial harbor facilities. Because of this need, state and local officials have begun to investigate viable harbor development alternatives for Connecticut.

By-Catch: Over The Side Discards, An Assessment And An Alternative, Alan R. Bunn

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The incidental capture and resultant mortality of numerous fin-fish and other species of marine organisms by non-selective types of fishing gear constitute a major waste of the various fishery resources. The magnitude of the discarded by-catch and its effects upon the major fisheries is examined. Specific gear types contributing to the problem will be identified. The Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery of the U.S., which annually catches over a billion pounds of unwanted fin-fish or “trash-fish” will be examined and an evaluation of the continuing development of selective shrimp trawling gear specifically designed to reduce the incidental capture of sea …

The National And International Legal Complications Of Subseabed Emplacement Of High-Level Nuclear Waste, Lynn Carlson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

High-level radioactive waste produced by nuclear power generation, weapons production, and medical research has been accumulating in temporary storage pools in many countries. A permanent method of disposal will soon benecessary to ensure against contamination of man and the environment. Land-based geologic formations, such as salt domes, are the preferred sites for disposal at this time in the United States. Subseabed emplacement is one option under consideration and the technological aspects of this method are currently being studied. In order to resolve these issues, it is proposed that relevant laws be conditionally amended to legalize subseabed emplacement, but only after …

The Effects Of Regulation On Aquaculture Development, Derek S. Busby

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

A comparative study of the regulatory frameworks surrounding aquaculture in the states of Florida, Mississippi, and Rhode Island is conducted beginning with a generalized study of basic legal premises of aquaculture-related law common to each state. This is followed by a detailed study of the statutory authority for aquaculture regulation and the agencies which control aquaculture activities in each state. In conjunction with the law analysis an Index of Specialization (ISP) study is conducted for each state to determine a relative ranking of diversity of crop production relative to each state’s overall aquaculture production.

The supply of natural shellfish and fishery stocks is on the decline and this trend is expected to continue. Aquaculture has been the solution to this problem in many European countries and the United States is currently attempting to remove domestic obstacles through its National Aquaculture Plan. The proprietor has experience in the production of various marine invertebrates and has designed, built and operated a producing shellfish hatchery. By using a unique up-welling juvenile culture system a …

The Development Of Construction And Equipment Standards To Promote Tanker Safety And Pollution Prevention, Kathleen M. Daly Jan 1984

The Development Of Construction And Equipment Standards To Promote Tanker Safety And Pollution Prevention, Kathleen M. Daly

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Upstaged by a dramatic series of tanker accidents in the winter of 1976-77, the Carter Administration responded by meeting drama with drama - the President proposed a bold set of recommendations that, if adopted, would surely improve tanker safety but would, at the same time, impose considerable economic hardship on an already faltering tanker industry. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific construction and equipment requirements put forth in the Presidential Initiatives, as they later became known, and trace the modifications made to them before they were incorporated into the tanker safety laws of the U.S. and …

Chartering Recreational Boats In The United States: A Compilation And Analysis Of Applicable Federal Maritime Law, Mary Nathalie Peter Jan 1984

Chartering Recreational Boats In The United States: A Compilation And Analysis Of Applicable Federal Maritime Law, Mary Nathalie Peter

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

No single primary source exists to provide current and would-be participants in recreational charter boat operations in the United States with a basic legal understanding of their rights and obligations. The relevant federal maritime standards, laws, regulations, and judicial interpretations are scattered in isolated codebooks, reporters, and bulletins. Moreover, the governing body of law for boat chartering is admiralty law, which has been shaped throughout the centuries primarily by the traditions and dictates of the commercial shipping and shipbuilding industries. As a result, the logic behind the admiralty framework tends to be obscure when viewed in the context of a …

The p·apers until 1966 are concerning ma.inly the territories delimited by natural plagua focis. Only in later periods, simu ltaneously with the intensive zoological research of the whole territory of the Mongolian People's Republic, the more detailed research of flea fauna on the whole territory takes place. The systematic research began thanks to the Mongolian-German and MongolianHungarian expeditions, the members of which have collected considerable parasitological material covering the part of northern, eastern and western Mongolia. Since the year 1970 the Soviet-Mongolian academic …

Toward A Normative Computer-Aided Contingency Planning Protocol, Peter H. Aiken Jan 1984

Toward A Normative Computer-Aided Contingency Planning Protocol, Peter H. Aiken

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis effort is an investigation into the subject of contingency planning.

Increases in the number of organizations operating in "turbulent environments" have highlighted deficiencies in planning methodologies which attempt to base continued organizational survival upon a single course of action. In these instances, organizations experience an increase in the number of variables and possible events for which they must be prepared. Traditional contingency planning efforts attempt to prepare the organization for the occurrence of events that are foreseen deviations from "the master plan". When operating in turbulent environments, organizations must plan to move quickly through a series of differing …
