Close-Coupling Calculations For Naar, Nane, And Nahe, Linda Lindroth Vahala
Close-Coupling Calculations For Naar, Nane, And Nahe, Linda Lindroth Vahala
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The non-adiabatic close-coupled theory, developed by Mies and by George, is employed in a time-independent molecular calculation for Na-rare gas collisions in a radiations field. The intensity of the Na D1/D2 lines is calculated for both blue- and red-wing excitation and is in good agreement with the experimental results of Havey, Copeland, and Wang for NaAr. The effects of different Born-Oppenheimer potentials on D1/D2 line intensity is considered by also treating NaNe and NaHe. The individual parity contributions to the line intensities are significantly different from each other.
Solvents For Use In The Extractive Distillation Of Piperylene Concentrate, Abdulhadi Sagga
Solvents For Use In The Extractive Distillation Of Piperylene Concentrate, Abdulhadi Sagga
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report describes an evaluation of the effectiveness of different solvents and solvent-organometallic compound mixtures for use in the extractive distillation of a piperylene mixture, consisting of five carbon olefins and diolefins obtained as a byproduct from an ethylene feedstock production plant. The most effective solvent is judged to be the one which gives the best separation of the lowest boiling and highest boiling points of the key components in the mixture. In this study twenty solvents and solvent mixtures were tested. Acetonitrile was found to be the most effective solvent and nitromethane the next most effective.
Ionization Of Heavy Atoms By Polarized Relativistic Protons, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi
Ionization Of Heavy Atoms By Polarized Relativistic Protons, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The effect due to the polarization of the incident high-energy (~GeV) proton beam on the ionization cross section of heavy atoms is investigated. In particular, with the use of Darwin wave functions for the atomic electron, the effect for hydrogenlike atoms is worked out. A numerical illustration shows that the polarization effect is completely insignificant. The authors also conclude that the K-shell ionization process is completely insensitive to the polarization of the incident beam.

Existence Of Coupled Quasi-Solutions Of Systems Of Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde
Existence Of Coupled Quasi-Solutions Of Systems Of Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde
Mathematics Technical Papers
Systems of nonlinear parabolic initial boundary value problems arise in many applications such as epidemies, ecology, biochemistry, biology, chemical and nuclear engineering. Constructive methods of proving existence results for such problems, which can also provide numerical procedures for the computation of solutions, are of greater value than theoretical existence results. The method of upper and lower solutions coupled with monotone iterative technique has been employed successfully to prove existence of multiple solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, in special case, by various authors [3,4,5,10,11,15 181. Recently, in [6,17] weakly coupled systems of reaction diffusion equations, when the nonlinear terms are independent …
The Effects Of Dominant Species Removal On Subtidal Community Development, H. Russell Barker Jr.
The Effects Of Dominant Species Removal On Subtidal Community Development, H. Russell Barker Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Acrylic panels were used to follow the development of the fouling community at Channel Points, Lynnhaven Bay, Virginia, from April through October 1979. The roles of Membranipora tenuis, an encrusting ectoproct, and Molgula manhattensis, a solitary tunicate, were studied by removing each species from the developing community on a weekly basis.
Early colonization was dominated by Membranipora followed by Corophium spp. (Amphipoda), Polydora ligni (Polychaeta), and Balanus eberneus (Arthropoda). Molgula colonized the panels later in the study and became a dominant occupier of primary space by the end of the study.
The removal of Membranipora and Molgula …
Design Of Efficient Algorithms Through Minimization Of Data Transfers, Yong Mo Chong
Design Of Efficient Algorithms Through Minimization Of Data Transfers, Yong Mo Chong
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis explores the time optimal implementation of computational graphs on a finite register machine. The implementation fully exploits the machine architecture, especially, the number of registers. The derived algorithms allow one to obtain time efficient implementations of a given graph in machines with a known number of registers.
These optimization procedures are applied to digital signal processing graphs. It is shown that the regular structure of these graphs allows one to identify computational kernels which, when used repeatedly, can cover the entire graph, The l- and r-register implementations of Hadamard and Fast Fourier Transforms using various computational kernels are …
Collision-Induced Bands Of Lithium-Rare Gas Molecules, Wen Jong Wang
Collision-Induced Bands Of Lithium-Rare Gas Molecules, Wen Jong Wang
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Lithium vapor is optically excited by two-step laser excitation of the 3d state in the presence of the rare gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Collision induced bands are observed in Li-Ar, Li-Kr, and Li-Xe mixtures. The bands are believed to be due to transitions to the dissociating 2s~ ground state from states above the 2p state of the Li-RG molecules. The Li-Ar, Li-Kr, and Li-Xe 3sб -2sб collision induced bands are progressively shifted, for the heavier rare gases, further to the red of the asymptotic atomic Li 3s-2s energy difference. A qualitative comparison is made between the spectra …
Determination Of N,N'-Diphenylguanidine In Biological Tissues And Fluids Using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Edward Sidney Hunter Iii
Determination Of N,N'-Diphenylguanidine In Biological Tissues And Fluids Using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Edward Sidney Hunter Iii
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
N,N'-Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is a potentially toxic compound used in the vulcanization of rubber products. Distribution of DPG in hybrid mice (C57BL/6J interbred with DAB2) was determined following intraperitoneal injection. Urine, fecal material, whole blood and tissues were collected at various times after administration of DPG and the extracts analyzed for DPG by high pressure liquid chromatography. Recovery of DPG from spiked urine and whole blood exceed 90%, however, the recovery of DPG from spiked tissue samples was approximately 70%.
DPG concentration in whole blood reached a maximum within ten minutes and rapidly decreased through 180 minutes after administration …
The Effect Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On The Fecundity Of Acartia Tonsa (Calanoid Copepoda), Juanita Y. Grabarczyk
The Effect Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On The Fecundity Of Acartia Tonsa (Calanoid Copepoda), Juanita Y. Grabarczyk
OES Theses and Dissertations
The concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAHs) were determined for several stations in the Elizabeth River. Thirteen PNAHs of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAHs were present in the particulate fraction. The concentrations ranged from 10.0 ng/1 to 1000 ng/1. Ten of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAH were present in the dissolved phase. Concentrations ranged from 2.0 ng/1 to 100 ng/1.
The environmental PNAHs concentrations were used to determine test concentrations. Bioassays were conducted to determine the effects of indigenous concentrations of seven predominant PNAHs (0.01 mg/1 to 2.4 mg/1 concentrations) on the fecundity of Acartia tonsa (calanoid Copepoda). …
The Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Frontal Regions Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Richard V. Lacouture
The Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Frontal Regions Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Richard V. Lacouture
OES Theses and Dissertations
The spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton was measured in relation to frontal areas located in the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. Phytoplankton biomass, taxonomy, and several physical parameters were measured on fifteen sampling cruises between September,1981 and February, 1983.
Several statistical tests revealed that phytoplankton biomass did not accumulate at the fronts and that generally the distribution of phytoplankton biomass was homogenous across the frontal region. The cell count data indicated that the community structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was usually very similar on both sides of the front. The data which was concerned with temporal variations in the …
The Effect Of Sea Nettle Abundance On The Food Chain Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Michael Glenn Kelly
The Effect Of Sea Nettle Abundance On The Food Chain Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Michael Glenn Kelly
OES Theses and Dissertations
The significance of sea nettle abundance on lower levels of the Chesapeake Bay food chain was examined in a field study and by the analysis of medusa gut contents. In the field study, the abundance of four levels of the food chain (Chlorophyll (a), copepods, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, and the Schyphomedusa Chrysaora guinguecirrha) were monitored twice weekly at four stations from May 10 through September 30, 1982. The copepod standing stock declined sharply in late May when M. leidyi appeared, but rebounded a month later when C. guinguecirrha medusae reduced the ctenophore population. Despite the additional presence …
Adaptations Of Dolphin Vision To The Oceanic Environment, Andre Rivamonte
Adaptations Of Dolphin Vision To The Oceanic Environment, Andre Rivamonte
OES Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study has been to develop an hypothesis explaining comparable aerial and underwater visual acuity of the bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus. This objective was accomplished by integrating the findings of other dolphin researchers working in the fields of comparative psychology, histology and ophthalmology. Their combined results enabled the formulation of a schematic dolphin eye. It is proposed that a dolphin lens, similar to the spherical lens of teleost fish with a rigid core of uniformly high refractive index and a margin of radially decreasing refractive index, could function as a bifocal lens and compensate for the eye's …

An Evaluation Of Trapping Efforts To Capture Bobcats, Coyotes, And Red Fox, John A. Litvaitis, Mark O'Donoghue, Mathew Miller, James A. Sherburne
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Wildlife biologists are often involved in efforts to capture free-ranging felids and canids. The objective of these efforts is usually to remove individuals causing unwanted or excessive predation, or to obtain study animals. The most common method used to capture carnivores includes some type of leg-hold trap. Numerous references provide information on the technique of leg-hold trapping (Taylor 1971, Musgrove and Blair 1979); however few reports include an evaluation of these methods.

Fe3O4 Precipitation In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Georgia C. Papaefthymiou, Richard P. Blakemore, Wendy O'Brien
Physics
Using Mössbauer resonance spectroscopy of 57Fe, we have determined the nature and distribution of major iron compounds in the magnetotactic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum. In addition to magnetite (Fe3O4), cells contained a low-density hydrous ferric oxide, a high-density hydrous ferric oxide (ferrihydrite), and ferrous iron. Analysis at different temperatures of whole cells harvested early and late in growth, of mutant cells unable to synthesize magnetite, and of cell fractions enriched in 57Fe indicated that Fe3O4 precipitation resulted from partial reduction of the high-density hydrous ferric oxide precursor.

Optimal Block Designs In One And Multi-Way Settings., Sunanda Bagchi Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The study of optimality of block designs formally began with wald (1943) proving a very important optimality property, designated as D-optimality of Iatin Square. Desi gns in a given physical set up. Next Ehrenfield (1955) proved the E-optimality property of Latin Square Designs. Since then, the work in: the area has primarily consisted in evolving a number of useful opti- mality oriteria for oomparing block design in a reasonable set up given and oharacterizing and/or constructing desi gns saiisfying the so called optimality criteria developed. But it was not until 1958, when the theory was given a proper and precise …

Stimulated Emission And The Flat Balmer Decrements Of Cataclysmic Variable Stars, Moshe Elitzur, Gary J. Ferland, W. G. Mathews, G. A. Shields
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Balmer emission lines from cataclysmic variables often have nearly equal intensities rather than the rapid decrement predicted by simple nebular theory. Traditionally, this has been interpreted in terms of local thermodynamic equilibrium emission from a dense gas with small volume located just above the accretion disk. In this Letter we show that the intense radiation field within a close binary system can affect excited-state populations and optical emission in ways which allow a relatively low density gas to closely mimic the high-density situation. In at least one case, the old nova V603 Aql, the emitting gas has a low density …

Regional Sea Level, Southern Oscillation And Beach Change, New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Coastal erosion is a problem of increasing concern that affects 60% of the world's sandy coastline. This erosion has been attributed to increased storminess, tectonic subsidence, eustatic sea-level rise, decreased shoreward sediment movement from the shelf, permanent longshore leakage of sediment from beach compartments, shifts in global pressure belts resulting in changes in the directional component of wave climates, and human interference. No one explanation has worldwide applicability because all factors vary in importance regionally. Evaluation of factors is complicated by a lack of accurate, continuous, long-term erosional data. Historical map evidence spanning 100-1,000 yr has been used in a …

Ab Initio Studies Of Abstraction Reactions Xhn + Hydrogen (H2) → Xhn+1 + Hydrogen (H) (X = Carbon, Nitrogen, Silicon, Or Phosphorus), Mark S. Gordon, David R. Gano, Jerry A. Boatz
Mark S. Gordon
The abstraction reactions CH3 + H2 --+ CH4 + H, SiH3 + H2 --+ SiH4 + H, NH2 + H2 --+ NH3 + H, and PH2 + H2--+ PH3 + H have been studied with a variety of methods, including MCSCF, POL-CI, UMP2, and UMP3. In agreement with the observed thermochemistry, abstraction by methyl radical is found to proceed more easily than by silyl, and the reverse of the last reaction occurs with a very small ( ~ 5.6 kcal/mol) barrier. POL-CI appears to be a consistently reliable approach for this type of reaction.

Competing Criticality Of Short- And Infinite-Range Interactions On The Cayley Tree, Mehran Kardar, Miron Kaufman
Miron Kaufman
The Ising model, with equivalent-neighbor and nearest-neighbor interactions of Cayley tree connectivity, is solved exactly. Breaking translational symmetry by turning on the Cayley interactions is analogous to lowering spatial dimensionality in Bravais lattices. A range of classical criticality, a point of logarithmic corrections, a range of continuously varying power-law singularities, and a point of exponential singularity are successively encountered.

The Changing Concept Of Change: The Derivative From Fermat To Weierstrass, Judith V. Grabiner
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Historically speaking, there were four steps in the development of today's concept of the derivative, which I list here in chronological order. The derivative was first used; it was then discovered; it was then explored and developed; and it was finally defined. That is, examples of what we now recognize as derivatives first were used on an ad hoc basis in solving particular problems; then the general concept lying behind them these uses was identified (as part of the invention of calculus); then many properties of the derivative were explained and developed in applications both to …
