Modeling Erosion On Long Steep Slopes With Emphasis On The Rilling Process, Michael C. Hirschi, Billy J. Barfield, Ian D. Moore Sep 1983

Modeling Erosion On Long Steep Slopes With Emphasis On The Rilling Process, Michael C. Hirschi, Billy J. Barfield, Ian D. Moore

KWRRI Research Reports

A model of soil erosion, known as KYERMO, is presented which emphasizes those processes which are important on steep slopes. Particular emphasis is placed on modeling rill development and geometry since this is the least understood process in erosion mechanics. The model requires an input rill pattern.

Rainfall inputs to the model require the use of breakpoint rainfall and kinetic energy. Surface storage is calculated based on random roughness data of Linden (1979). Infiltration is modeled by use of the two layer Green-Ampt-Mein-Larson model as proposed by Moore and Eigel (1981). Runoff is related to rainfall excess and surface storage …

The Red River Gorge: The Existence Of "Recreational Niches" And Their Management Implications, Sara E. Alexander, Billie R. Dewalt, Eugenie Scott

KWRRI Research Reports

Until the late 1960's, the Red River Gorge was just one of the more beautiful parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest. At this time, the Army Corps of Engineers proposed to dam the river for flood control, water supply, and recreation purposes. Intense opposition to the project generated considerable publicity and the Gorge area experienced substantial increases in visitation. The result has been not only severe environmental degradation but extensive overcrowding as well. These trends are presently overtaxing management capabilities of the United States Forest Service. The most pressing issue has come to be how to effectively manage this …

Effect Of Lime Quality On Soil Ph Changes, Monroe Rasnake Sep 1983

Effect Of Lime Quality On Soil Ph Changes, Monroe Rasnake

Soil Science News and Views

Quality of a liming material depends primarily on two factors - purity and size of the individual particles. Purity is an indication of how much active material is present. Particle size determines how fa st the lime can dissolve and react with soil acidity.

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Computer Systems In Community Hospital Food Service, Beverly Kittle

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cost containment has always been a major concern to managers. Therefore, any system which decreases costs by reducing labor time is given serious evaluation.

A five week comparison was made between financial record keeping by the manual method and by the computerized method. A continuous time study was utilized to make this comparison.

Over the five weeks, an average overall time savings of 245 minutes for the computerized versus the manual method was observed. The net savings to the institution was 223 minutes per week which translates to approximately $140.00 per month over a 5 year period.

The rapid payback …

Depositional Environments Of The Miocene Esmeralda Formation, Stewart Basin, Stewart Valley, Nevada, Kevin E. Nick Sep 1983

Depositional Environments Of The Miocene Esmeralda Formation, Stewart Basin, Stewart Valley, Nevada, Kevin E. Nick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine specific depositional environments of the Miocene Esmeralda Formation in Stewart Basin (Stewart Valley), Mineral County, Nevada. Previous workers have concentrated on paleontological aspects of the basin and have described in detail the molluscs, mammals and macroflora. Less work has been done on the diatoms and spores and none on the fish, algae, wood or ostracodes. Recently, seven lithostratigraphics units of the Esmeralda Formation have been mapped in Stewart Valley (Clausen, 1983).

Detailed lithofacies are described in each of the seven lithostratigraphic units. Lithofacies 1 is composed of porcelanite and diatomite containing plant …

Depositional Environments Of Siliceous Laminites In The Laney Member Of The Green River Formation, Sublette County, Wyoming, Michael G. Rasmussen Sep 1983

Depositional Environments Of Siliceous Laminites In The Laney Member Of The Green River Formation, Sublette County, Wyoming, Michael G. Rasmussen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Siliceous shales of the Laney Member of the Green River Formation are exposed in outcrops around Fontenelle Reservoir in the northwest corner of the Green River Basin, Wyoming. An analysis of these shales is important to an understanding of the origin of laminites in the Green River formation. The shales are rhythmic, varve -like laminites, composed of quartz, authigenic potassium feldspar , dolomite, and zeolite minerals. The association of these minerals suggest that the original sediment contained significant amounts of volcanic ash, and were deposited in a shallow, near-shore, oxygenated saline - alkaline lake environment, as inferred from (1) the …

The Application Of Exact Electrodiffusion Theory To Ion Transport Across Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Scott Cohen Aug 1983

The Application Of Exact Electrodiffusion Theory To Ion Transport Across Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Scott Cohen

Dissertations and Theses

The question of how ions interact with each other and with the potential energy barrier in thin lipid bilayer membranes has interested investigators for several years. The application of electrodiffusion theory to the study of this question is the central theme of this work. We have calculated current-voltage curves for barriers of various shapes and heights, in each case by means of numerically integrating the exact electrodiffusion equation as well as this same equation in the constant field approximation. We have also calculated the total charge in the membrane for the same conditions under which we have calculated the current-voltage …

Magnetic Field Behavior Of A Josephson-Junction Array: Two-Dimensional Flux Transport On A Periodic Substrate, Richard A. Webb, Richard F. Voss, G. Grinstein, P. M. Horn Aug 1983

Magnetic Field Behavior Of A Josephson-Junction Array: Two-Dimensional Flux Transport On A Periodic Substrate, Richard A. Webb, Richard F. Voss, G. Grinstein, P. M. Horn

Faculty Publications

This Letter reports measurements down to 3 mK of the magnetic field dependence of the resistance and critical current of a weakly coupled periodic array of Josephson junctions. Below 700 mK the resistance is an oscillatory function of field. The temperature dependence of the resistance for integral numbers of flux quanta per cell suggests the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition involving the unbinding of defects in the flux lattice.

Atomic Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace Aug 1983

Atomic Photoionization, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We present here a brief overview of the theory of atomic photoionization. The main aim is to describe current theoretical understanding of the dynamics of the photon-atom collision process. In particular the discussion focuses on those kinds of electron correlation that have been found to be most important for photoionization processes. The general theoretical formulation of the interaction between an incident photon and an N-electron atom is presented first. This is followed by a description of those quantitative and qualitative features of the photoionization cross section that can be understood within a central potential model. The particle-hole type of electron …

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation And Glucose-Dependent Cross-Linking Of Protein, Albert S. Eble, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes

Faculty Publications

A model system using RNase A has been established for studying the nonenzymatic glucosylation and glucose-dependent cross-linking of protein (Maillard reaction) under physiological conditions in vitro. The rate of glucosylation of RNase was first order in glucose. Glucosylation was accompanied by a comparable decrease in primary amino groups in the protein and lysine recoverable by amino acid analysis. Analysis of glucosylation reaction mixtures by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of mercaptoethanol revealed the time-dependent formation of RNase dimer and trimer. The polymerization reaction was mixed order with respect to glucose concentration, but was approximately first order with …

Simple And Direct Determination Of Complex Refractive Index And Thickness Of Unsupported Or Embedded Thin Films By Combined Reflection And Transmission Ellipsometry At 45° Angle Of Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Measurements of the polarization states (represented by complex numbers Xr and Xt, respectively) of light reflected and transmitted by an unsupported or embedded thin film, for totally polarized light (with nonzero p and s components) incident at 45°, permit simple, direct, and explicit determination of the film's complex refractive index N1 independently of film thickness or input polarization. If α = Xr/Xt, we find that α = rs + rs-1, where rs is Fresnel’s complex reflection coefficient of the ambient-film interface for the s polarization at …

Hole Transport In Pure And Doped Gaas, H. J. Lee, David C. Look Aug 1983

Hole Transport In Pure And Doped Gaas, H. J. Lee, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

We have used a two-band model (heavy and light holes) to calculate the transport properties ofp-type GaAs. The scattering mechanisms included are acoustic-mode deformation potential, acoustic-mode piezoelectric potential, polar- and nonpolar-mode deformation potential, ionized impurity, and space charge. Interband scattering is included explicitly for the optical phonons and phenomenologically for the acoustic phonons. The intraband polar optical-mode scattering, for which a relaxation time cannot be defined, was calculated by using the numerical method of Fletcher and Butcher. The acoustic deformation-potential parameter and the coupling coefficient for interband scattering were calculated by fitting the theory to Hall-mobility data for both pure …
