Photometric And Spectroscopic Observations Of An Optical Candidate For The X-Ray Source H 0544 - 665, M. Van Der Klis, J. Van Paradijs, P. A. Charles, J. R. Thorstensen Jun 1983

Photometric And Spectroscopic Observations Of An Optical Candidate For The X-Ray Source H 0544 - 665, M. Van Der Klis, J. Van Paradijs, P. A. Charles, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the results of spectroscopic and UBV observations of the brightest star in the error box of the X-ray source H 0544–665. This object is a B0–1 V star and a member of the LMC. It shows correlated variations in brightness and colour indices. We suggest that it is a Be-type star observed during a stage of low emission strength. Although a relation between this star and the X-ray source has still to be proven the present data add considerable support to the proposed identification.

Palynology And Paleoecology Of The Fossil Butte Member Of The Eocene Green River Formation In Fossil Basin, Lincoln County, Wyoming, Robert A. Cushman Jr. Jun 1983

Palynology And Paleoecology Of The Fossil Butte Member Of The Eocene Green River Formation In Fossil Basin, Lincoln County, Wyoming, Robert A. Cushman Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The palynoflora of the Fossil Butte Member of Green River Formation was studied to enhance our understanding of the depositional environment of ancient Fossil Lake. Forty-nine outcrop samples were collected from three measured sections representing the center, the margin, and intermediate areas of Fossil Lake. Of the 49 samples, 12 yielded a fairly well preserved palynomorph assemblage.

A late early Eocene to early middle Eocene age for the Fossil Butte palynoflora is indicated by the presence of Bombacaceae, Eucommia, Ilex, Juglans, Pistillipollenites, Platycarya, Pterocarya, Tilia, and Taxodium. Additional evidence for the early to middle Eocene age of the Fossil Butte …

Orthodontic Information Systems : A Developmental Study, Gary D. Sheldon Jun 1983

Orthodontic Information Systems : A Developmental Study, Gary D. Sheldon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The intent of this study was to design and implement a computer-based orthodontic system providing an integrated information environment throughout the entire patient treatment process.

Total system integration was achieved by restructuring the entire information gathering process. A complete, evaluation of patient diagnosis and treatment evaluation procedures established five major information categories and a critical information list for proper patient management. Information organization was outlined to provide a logical progression in the information gathering process and patient chart forms were designed to implement this. Defining the computer system's performance identified three functions as follows: 1) entry and editing of individual …

Mathematical Evaluation Of Steady, Laminar Flow By The Use Of Continuous-Wave (Cw) Doppler And Pitot Tube System, Malek Mansoor Sharif Jun 1983

Mathematical Evaluation Of Steady, Laminar Flow By The Use Of Continuous-Wave (Cw) Doppler And Pitot Tube System, Malek Mansoor Sharif

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Investigation, as to the usefulness of spectral analysis of the acoustical signal from the Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter, is being conducted. The purpose was to determine some of the hemodynamic influences on the spectrum. The hypothesis was that both hematocrit and pressure head influence the amplitude of the spectrum. Experiments were designed to: a) evaluate their roles on amplitude; b) derive the associated functional relationship.

Preliminary experiments revealed that: a) the accuracy of our Doppler flowmeter was satisfactory, since a very good linear relation was found between electromagnetically and Doppler derived flow; b) the relative weight of the hematocrit parameter on …

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Miocene "Esmeralda" Formation In Stewart Valley, Mineral County, Nevada, Benjamin L. Clausen Jun 1983

Stratigraphy And Structure Of The Miocene "Esmeralda" Formation In Stewart Valley, Mineral County, Nevada, Benjamin L. Clausen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Miocene rocks of Stewart Valley, eastern Mineral County, Nevada, consist of volcanic flows and breccias and fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary rocks. They are called the Esmeralda Formation because they contain lithologies similar to those of the Esmeralda type section 100km south; however, the rocks in Stewart Valley were probably deposited in a separate local basin. The lower part of this formation contains small lacustrine claystone deposits (unit 1) that interfinger with volcanic breccias and flows (unit 2). The main fluvio-lacustrine sequence is above the flows and·is divided by the author into five units based on lithology: sandstone and claystone in unit …

Mathematics: The Loss Of Certainty, Calvin Jongsma May 1983

Mathematics: The Loss Of Certainty, Calvin Jongsma

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

Morris Kline was a contentious mathematician and author, documenting (as he saw it) both the deficiencies of mid-twentieth-century reformist trends in mathematics education and formalist views of the foundations (and practice) of mathematics. This brief introduction to a discussion of Kline's 1980 book and its mixed reception by the mathematics community provides a context for assessing his ideas as part of his overall views on the nature of mathematics.

The Activitiy And Application Of Mathematics, R. S. D. Thomas May 1983

The Activitiy And Application Of Mathematics, R. S. D. Thomas

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

There are four so-called philosophies of mathematics that I regard as totally discredited, formalism, intuitionism, logicism, and Platonism. It is a common feature of the ism philosophies of mathematics that they do not take the application of mathematics very seriously. This paper examines a view of mathematics that takes applications seriously.

Using Mathematical Concepts To Illustrate Scriptural And Spiritual Ideas, Robert Brabenec May 1983

Using Mathematical Concepts To Illustrate Scriptural And Spiritual Ideas, Robert Brabenec

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1983

Christian mathematics faculty and students respond in differing ways to this idea of applying mathematics to Scripture, and vice-versa. Mathematics is man-made, while Scripture is inspired by God, so they should be disjoint entities. However, it is well known that the Scripture used analogies of familiar human objects and ideas in order to explain spiritual ideas. This paper discusses various mathematical concepts and how they illustrate Scriptural and spiritual ideas.

The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque May 1983

The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque

Dissertations and Theses

It has been demonstrated that the toxicity of heavy metals depends on their chemical speciation and can be related to their free ion activities, rather than the total metal concentrations. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of combined free ions of zinc and copper on the toxicity to the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. This alga was grown in a defined medium, under controlled laboratory conditions, with a varying range of zinc and copper concentrations. The growth rate of the alga was inhibited at pZn = 5.93 or at pCu = 7.24. The results suggest that …

Survival Analysis For A Red Squirrel Population, Curtis H. Halvorson, Richard M. Engeman May 1983

Survival Analysis For A Red Squirrel Population, Curtis H. Halvorson, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A 13-year study of an isolated red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) population in Montana has provided the data necessary to analyze their survival. Such long-term, intensive studies of wild populations are rare. When reported, derived (ratio) estimates are used to develop survival information as Gross et al. (1974), and Keith and Windberg (1978) did in respective 9- and 15-year lagomorph studies. A more accurate method, following cohorts, was used by Armitage and Downhower (1974) and Mosby (1969), who presented results for six or more year-classes of sciurids in actuarial tables (Deevey, 1947; Allee et al., 1949).

The Law Of The Sea: International Law Implications Of The U.S. Refusal To Sign The Treaty, Richard D. Coogan May 1983

The Law Of The Sea: International Law Implications Of The U.S. Refusal To Sign The Treaty, Richard D. Coogan

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This study is undertaken to show the impact of the international law aspects of the Law of the Sea Treaty as they relate to the U.S. failure to sign the Treaty. The U.S. has embarked on a course of action, by its refusal to sign the Treaty, that can have major impact on day-to-day national policy issues as they relate to international law governing a state's behavior. The U.S., in refusing to sign the Treaty because of the deep seabed provisions, and yet claiming other provisions as reflecting customary law, is probably correct as viewed in today's realities.

The Effect Of The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Robert Palmer Yankle Ii May 1983

The Effect Of The Endangered Species Act Of 1973, Robert Palmer Yankle Ii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Scrimshaw, as an art form, had just recently risen a few notches above the state of obscurity. There are still millions of Americans who probably know nothing about it. Inextricably linked with the whaling industry for years, the scrimshaw industry has recently undergone a remarkable transition. When whaling ended in the United States, scrimshaw moved ashore and some people found out that there was a great deal of money to be made in the scrimshaw business. but with the passage of the Marine Mammals Protection Act in 1973, scrimshanders found themselves being tightly regulated by the Federal government. This paper …

The Advantage Of Using Non-Measurable Stop Rules, Theodore P. Hill, Victor C. Prestien May 1983

The Advantage Of Using Non-Measurable Stop Rules, Theodore P. Hill, Victor C. Prestien

Research Scholars in Residence

Comparisons are made between the expected returns using measurable and non-measurable stop rules in discrete-time stopping problems. In the independent case, a natural sufficient condition ("preservation of independence") is found for the expected return of every bounded non-measurable stopping function to be equal to that of a measurable one, and for that of every unbounded non-measurable stopping function to be arbitrarily close to that of a measurable one. For non-negative and for uniformly-bounded independent random variables, universal sharp bounds are found for the advantage of using non-measurable stopping functions over using measurable ones. Partial results for the dependent case are …

Nitrogen Placement For No-Till Corn, Kenneth L. Wells May 1983

Nitrogen Placement For No-Till Corn, Kenneth L. Wells

Soil Science News and Views

An estimated 18 to 20 percent of all corn grown in Kentucky is no-till planted. This 400 to 500 thousand acres is directly planted into sod, residues from the previous year, or a winter cover crop. Many field trials have been conducted by University of Kentucky agronomists during the past 15 years to determine nitrogen fertilization practices best suited for this kind of corn production. These recommendations are published annually in "AGR-1 Lime and Fertilizer Recommendations," and call for 25 lbs more actual fertilizer N per acre than conventional corn. This is largely justified by: (1) a greater potential for …

Defect Nature Of The 0.4-Ev Center In O-Doped Gaas, David C. Look, S. Chaudhuri, J. R. Sizelove

Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the Ec - 0.4 e V center in O-doped GaAs by a combination of temperature-dependent Hall-effect measurements, spark-source mass spectroscopy, and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy. The conclusion is that neither 0 nor any other impurity can account for the O.4-eV center; therefore, it is a pure defect.

Microcomputer Algorithms For Prime Number Testing, Susan Dale Barton May 1983

Microcomputer Algorithms For Prime Number Testing, Susan Dale Barton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper gives a survey of different methods of prime number testing. Emphasis has been given to algorithms based upon Fermat's Theorem: if p is an odd prime number, then p divides ap-a. All of the computer programs described in this paper have been written for use on microcomputers and so the feasibility of using microcomputers is also discussed. Finally, numbers of various forms have been considered for primality with special attention given to Mersenne and Fermat numbers. It is hoped that some of the information contained in this paper may provide worthwhile enrichment ideas for mathematics educators.

An Irvingtonian Fauna From The Oldest Quaternary Alluvium In Eastern Pumpkin Creek Valley, Morrill And Banner Counties, Nebraska, R. George Corner, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. May 1983

An Irvingtonian Fauna From The Oldest Quaternary Alluvium In Eastern Pumpkin Creek Valley, Morrill And Banner Counties, Nebraska, R. George Corner, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Vertebrate fossils of Mammuthus meridionalis (Nesti) and Equus sp. cf. E. scotti Gidley occur at two sites in the capping alluvium of the highest strath terrace along the south side of Pumpkin Creek Valley, Nebraska. The presence of these two species supports the conclusion that the age of the capping sediments is probably early Irvingtonian (early Pleistocene).

A Practical Guide To Admiralty Law For The Seagoing Naval Officer, John Edward Walters May 1983

A Practical Guide To Admiralty Law For The Seagoing Naval Officer, John Edward Walters

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Daily there are hundreds of United States Navy vessels operating in foreign, international and domestic waters. The knowledge of admiralty law possessed by the officers on these vessels is extremely limited. Prospective Commanding Officers of Navy vessels are trained in areas of international and maritime law, but not in cases involving admiralty. If a United States naval vessel is involved in an admiralty incident, the only recourse the Commanding Officer has is to contact his superior and wait for word from the Staff Judge Advocate representative. It is not necessary for Commanding Officers to be experts on admiralty matters in …

An Examination Of The Ability Of The U.S. Merchant Marine To Perform Its Mission During Peacetime And Various Contingency Situations, Paul Michael Molloy May 1983

An Examination Of The Ability Of The U.S. Merchant Marine To Perform Its Mission During Peacetime And Various Contingency Situations, Paul Michael Molloy

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The maritime transportation industry is an extremely important one for the United States today. Strategic materials are mostly carried by ships; thus, our economy, and to some extent our national defense, depend on the secure and efficient operation of the maritime transportation industry. Anything which could adversely impact on the continued operation of shipping is a matter of grave concern. The hypothesis of this paper is that the U.S. Merchant Marine is currently unable to perform its peacetime or wartime mission. The methodology will be to examine the missions to be performed by the Merchant Marine during the different situations …
