Anhydrous Ammonia Use For Corn, William O. Thom Apr 1983

Anhydrous Ammonia Use For Corn, William O. Thom

Soil Science News and Views

Anhydrous ammonia is the most concentrated form of nitrogen fertilizer available to corn producers in many areas of Kentucky. It is a simple chemical compound made up of one part nitrogen and three parts hydrogen (NH3), existing as a gas at normal outdoor temperatures. This makes it necessary to store and handle the material in closed containers under pressure. The product contains 82% nitrogen, making it one of the highest analysis and most economical fertilizers available for corn production.

Current Research On Band Application Of Fertilizer To Burley Tobacco, J. L. Sims Apr 1983

Current Research On Band Application Of Fertilizer To Burley Tobacco, J. L. Sims

Soil Science News and Views

Present Status: Generally, past research conducted in the United States has shown that only one-half to two-thirds as much fertilizer is required to produce maximum crop yields when the fertilizer is properly banded as when it is broadcast. However, the magnitude of plant response to banding compared to broadcast applications varies widely with soil nutrient levels, soil temperature, soil pH, and the mobility of the nutrient being applied. Greatest benefits from banding result from (a) applications to soils having low or very-low soil test levels of the nutrient in question, (b) applications to crops grown in cool climates, (3) applications …

Structural Studies Of Low Temperature Ice Iₕ Using A Central Force Potential Model, Peter W. Deutsch, Barbara N. Hale, Richard C. Ward, Donald A. Reago Jr. Apr 1983

Structural Studies Of Low Temperature Ice Iₕ Using A Central Force Potential Model, Peter W. Deutsch, Barbara N. Hale, Richard C. Ward, Donald A. Reago Jr.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The revised central force potentials of Stillinger and Rahman [J. Chem. Phys. 68, 666 (1978)] are used to study the binding energy, structure, and multipole moments of a periodic ice Ih sample with a unit cell of 192 water molecules. The initial configuration for the unit cell has each oxygen in a wurtzite structure and intramolecular H-O-H angles symmetrically positioned in the tetrahedral O-O-O angles. Hydrogens are placed such that the total dipole moment for the unit cell is zero and the diagonal quadrupole moments are small (≲ 10-28 esu cm2). Subject to these restrictions, a …

Using Nuclear Resonance Excitation To Observe United Atoms In Symmetric Ion-Atom Collisions, James M. Feagin, Ladislov Kocbach Apr 1983

Using Nuclear Resonance Excitation To Observe United Atoms In Symmetric Ion-Atom Collisions, James M. Feagin, Ladislov Kocbach

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We consider nuclear resonance excitation as a means to observe the distribution of united-atom orbitals in symmetric ion-atom collisions. We develop this possibility with the application of a two-state adiabatic model to an analysis of a 8Be nuclear resonance experiment. To test our model, and to provide a more direct determination of the nuclear resonance width, we propose that the 8Be experiment be repeated with metastable helium targets.

Cargo Preference: Bitter Pill For The U.S. Public Or Pillar Of Strength For The U.S Merchant Marine?, Rand D. Lebouvier Apr 1983

Cargo Preference: Bitter Pill For The U.S. Public Or Pillar Of Strength For The U.S Merchant Marine?, Rand D. Lebouvier

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Leading with a brief discussion of the need for federal aid in general, the background, impact, and prospects for the future of cargo preference will be examined. It will be demonstrated that federal aid, particularly in the form of Cargo Preference, is required to maintain the merchant marine. It will also be demonstrated that federal aid and policy in its present form is not sufficient to promote growth. There needs to be significant improvement in this area if the maritime industry is to become a successful and vital force once again. Though cargo preference comprises only one part of the …

Impact Of The Law Of The Sea Treaty On The Soviet Fishing Industry, Gary Lee Roemmich Apr 1983

Impact Of The Law Of The Sea Treaty On The Soviet Fishing Industry, Gary Lee Roemmich

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The signing of the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) Treaty was the maturation of an idea that was born thirty-six years ago. That treaty placed into effect the 200 mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A universal 200 mile EEZ could be a death knell for the high-seas fishing fleets we know today as the majority of the major fishing grounds lie within 200 miles of the coast. The Soviet Union presently has the largest fishing fleet in the world and will perhaps feel the largest impact from the treaty signing. This paper intends to evaluate …

Causes Of The Decline Of The Merchant Marine And Prospects For Renewal Under Current Federal Maritime Policy, William A. Tait Apr 1983

Causes Of The Decline Of The Merchant Marine And Prospects For Renewal Under Current Federal Maritime Policy, William A. Tait

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to identify, with particular emphasis on federal maritime policy, the reasons why the merchant marine and maritime industry of the United States have so dramatically declined in size, capacity, and competitiveness in recent years.Current and proposed government policy, particularly that of the Reagan Administration, will be examined along with viewpoints of representative maritime industry sectors to assess the prospects for solving the problems that plague the merchant marine. Finally, recommendations will be offered which are considered most likely to improve the vitality of the merchant marine.

Redevelopment In Jacksonville Beach, Florida: A Coastal Zone Management Perspective, Keith E. Falt

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to provide the community leaders and the concerned citizens of Jacksonville Beach, Florida with an understanding of the issues involved with development of the beachfront of that community. Too often development projects are planned and implemented with those responsible unaware of many of the factors which will impact the success of the project. The unusual qualities of the shoreline mandate careful consideration.

Characterization Of Water From Laverkin Springs, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation Apr 1983

Characterization Of Water From Laverkin Springs, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Water

Analytical water data obtained from two separate test programs at the LaVerkin Springs site, Washington County, southwestern Utah, were evaluated. During the first analyses, from February 11 through November 6, 1972, water samples were obtained weekly from 14 atmospheric springs. During the second analyses from November 1, 1979 through August 27, 1980, water samples were obtained weekly at aquifer pressure by pumping from a well representative of the 14 springs. Acquired data included characteristics of the water in 1972, and again in 1979-1980, uniformity of the water in the springs tested, variations of these characteristics within the time of year, …

Sedimentation Rate Of Salt Determined By Micrometeorite Analysis, James Matthew Barnett Apr 1983

Sedimentation Rate Of Salt Determined By Micrometeorite Analysis, James Matthew Barnett

Masters Theses

The sedimentation rate of the A-l Evaporite of Michigan was determined by analysis of micrometeorites found as inclusions in the halite deposit. The samples were obtained from the Dow Chemical Company salt well number eight. The residue from the dissolved salt was magnetically separated and later analyzed by Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE), X-ray diffraction , and microprobe techniques. The amount of extraterrestrial material was determined from the quantity of nickel present.

A sedimentation rate of .01 to .4 centimeters per year was calculated for the salt based on a constant influx rate of meteoritic material of 1 x 10 …

The Geology And Geochemistry Of The Summit Creek Molybdenum Prospect, Custer County, Idaho, Thomas Murray Hanna Apr 1983

The Geology And Geochemistry Of The Summit Creek Molybdenum Prospect, Custer County, Idaho, Thomas Murray Hanna

Masters Theses

The Summit Creek stock, a molybdenum prospect located in the Pioneer Mountains of central Idaho, is a 46.7 m.y. old medium grained, slightly porphyritic quartz monzonite, which has intruded the late Ordovician Phi Kappa formation. Trend surface analysis shows that the stock is the product of one intrusive event. Pervasive mineral alteration usually associated with such porphyry (stockwork) molybdenum deposits is not present in this pluton, and the alteration that is present is confined to local faults and fractures.

Geochemical and petrographic evidence suggest that the pluton is a felsic differentiate from a melt which originated at a depth of …

Electrical Resistivity Survey Near The "Kl" Avenue Landfill, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, David W. Hall Apr 1983

Electrical Resistivity Survey Near The "Kl" Avenue Landfill, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, David W. Hall

Masters Theses

The KL Avenue Landfill near Kalamazoo, Michigan has recently become an area of ground water contamination. As of April, 1979, the landfill was closed due to contaminated wells to the west. This area was chosen to study because preliminary electrical resistivity surveys indicated that the approximate areal extent and depth of the contamination may be located without the additional cost of drilling wells. It is the intent of this study to use the Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Sounding method to construct a hydrogeologic model for this area.

This study is a rather critical test of the Schlumberger VES method in a …

Chemical Sealing Of Small Earth Dams Using Sodium Tripolyphosphate, R G. Pepper Apr 1983

Chemical Sealing Of Small Earth Dams Using Sodium Tripolyphosphate, R G. Pepper

Technical Bulletins

As the seepage rate of 3.1 mm/d was considered too high, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) was dissolved in the dam water in an attempt to disperse the clay and reduce the hydraulic conductivity. Application of STPP altered the original sealing layer at first and, as seepage progressed, a new seal started to form at a depth of 0.8 m below the batter. The seepage rate was reduced to 0.39 mm/d and the hydraulic conductivity of this new seal was 2.0 x 10-9 m/s.

Variability Of Atmospheric Hydrocarbon Concentrations And Deposition Rates, Charles Thomas Farmer Apr 1983

Variability Of Atmospheric Hydrocarbon Concentrations And Deposition Rates, Charles Thomas Farmer

OES Theses and Dissertations

The atmospheric hydrocarbon concentration was determined at various locations throughout Southeastern Virginia from July 1981 to February 1983. During this period the concentration ranged from 0.4 to 5.5 μg/m3 . From October 1982 to February 1983, WET and dry deposition samples were collected in conjunction with these air samples. Total hydrocarbon dry deposition rates ranged from deposition rates ranged from 4 to 189 μg/m2 /day, while WET 22 to 670 μg/m2 /day. Hydrocarbon concentrations found were within the ranges reported in the literature for wet, dry and atmospheric hydrocarbon concentrations.

Linear trend analysis revealed no correlation between …
