Nebraska Tractor Tests
EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …
Fertilization Of Double-Crop Soybeans, Grant W. Thomas
Fertilization Of Double-Crop Soybeans, Grant W. Thomas
Soil Science News and Views
The improvement of minimum-and no-tillage methods has helped increase the double-cropped acreage of soybeans in Kentucky to about 700,000 acres. Similar increases have been observed in our neighboring states. Most double-cropped soybeans in Kentucky follow winter wheat harvested for grain. Thus, they are at a disadvantage if the wheat leaves the soybean crop with a nutrient-deficient soil.

Civilian Space Policy And Applications, U.S. Office Of Technology Assessment
Space Law Documents
The United States orbited its first satellite in 1958, nearly a quarter century ago. In the intervening years, the United States has made great strides in developing peaceful and practical uses of space technology. However, in spite of the dramatic successes of the space program, among which are the recent flights of the Columbia shuttle orbiter, many informed observers express considerable unease about the future of our civilian efforts in space, particularly in light of increased foreign competition and stringent fiscal restraints.
Because of these uncertainties and also because of emerging new prospects for using the space environment, this assessment …

On The Application And Extension Of Harten's High-Resolution Scheme, Helen C. Yee, R. F. Warming, Amiran Harten
On The Application And Extension Of Harten's High-Resolution Scheme, Helen C. Yee, R. F. Warming, Amiran Harten
United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications
Xost first-order upstream conservative differencing methods can capture shocks quite well for one-dimensional problems. A direct application of these first-order methods to two-dimensional problems does not necessarily produce the same type of accuracy unless the shocks are locally aligned with the mesh. Harten has recently developed a second-order high-resolution explicit method for the numerical computation of weak solutions of one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws. The main objectives of this paper are (a) to examine the shock resolution of Harten's method for a two-dimensional shock reflection problem, (b) to study the use of a high-resolution scheme as a post-processor to an approximate …

With use of a Fano-effect polarized electron source and a state-selected thermally dissociated hydrogen beam, the interference between the direct and the exchange scattering amplitudes was measured for 90° elastic scattering of electrons from atomic hydrogen for energies between 4 and 30 eV.
Flash Photolysis: The Technique And Its Application, Marabeth G. Soltis
Flash Photolysis: The Technique And Its Application, Marabeth G. Soltis
Honors Theses
The application of flash photolysis in photochemistry offers an effective means to directly investigate reactive intermediates. This powerful technique rapidly converts a high percentage of molecules in their ground electronic state to upper excited states. This enables the disappearance of the excited species to be observed and kinetic information concerning the rate law and rate constants to be measured. The purpose of our work is to investigate the kinetics of the rate of decay of triplet anthracene in dilute solutions and to obtain rate constants for this reaction. The reduced expression for the decay of triplet anthracene is written: -dT/ …
The Gas Phase Ozonolysis Of Tetramethylethylene, Catherine A. Rusik
The Gas Phase Ozonolysis Of Tetramethylethylene, Catherine A. Rusik
Honors Theses
The gas phase reaction between ozone and olefins is thought to proceed via an oxy-peroxy biradical intermediate, which may undergo cleavage or a variety of hydrogen abstractions. The validity of this biradical mechanism is investigated in a study of the products and stoichiometry of the gas phase ozonolysis of tetramethylethylene. Various pathways in the ozonolysis mechanism for this olefin are compared thermochemically to assess the relative favorability of the reaction possibilities of the biradical intermediate. Experimentally, olefin-rich and ozone rich reaction conditions are studied in the concentration range 10-800 ppm, using gas chromatography. The concentration of ozone present is determined …

Microcomputer Interfacing With Chemical Instrumentation, Joel R. Meyer
Honors Theses
In this paper we discuss the interface of a liquid chromatograph with an· Apple II+ microcomputer, The system consists of a Varian 5000 High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), a Tracor 970A variable wavelength absorption detector (VWD), an Apple II+ computer, and an interface unit which consists of an operational amplifier and a Mountain Computer A/D + D/A converter. The op. amp. modifies the output signal of the VWD (0 to +lV) to meet the input specifications of the A/D converter (-5V to +5V). This allows the conversion of the continuous analog signal from the VWD to a digital signal, which …

Biological Effects Of Low Doses Of Ionizing Radiations: Particle Tracks In Radiobiology, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Biological Effects Of Low Doses Of Ionizing Radiations: Particle Tracks In Radiobiology, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Robert Katz Publications
A radiation field is made up of a tangle of particle tracks, from the primary particle and secondary and higher generation electron interactions, well isolated at low doses and with multiple intersections in cell nuclei at high doses. Low dose effects in multicellular systems are therefore the sum of individual track structures. Until we can state with confidence the structure of a particle track in biological matter for all end-points of interest, at least as well as we can for nuclear emulsions, our knowledge of low dose effects should be regarded as uncertain and inadequate. In this context “track structure” …

In-Situ Measurements Ofwave Electric Fields In The Equatorial Electrojet, R. C. Pfaff, M. C. Kelley, Bela G. Fejer, N. C. Maynard, K. D. Baker
Bela G. Fejer
Electric field wave measurements have been performed on two sounding rockets in the equatorial ionosphere. During a daytime flight from Chilca, Peru, intense electrostatic waves were detected on the upward directed electron density gradient. During a nighttime flight from Kwajalein Atoll, similar waves were detected on a downward directed gradient. These results are in agreement with a gradient drift instability explanation of the generation of the waves. The wave amplitudes were as high as 5 mV/m implying perturbation drifts comparable to the driving drift velocities. Power spectra from the turbulent region show a peak at long wavelengths, followed by a …
