Absorption Coefficients Of Ozone At Low Temperature In The Visible Region, Hessameddin Ghiassi Jun 1982

Absorption Coefficients Of Ozone At Low Temperature In The Visible Region, Hessameddin Ghiassi

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The temperature dependence of absorption coefficients of ozone was studied between 7567 Å and 4630 Å . When the gas was cooled from room temperature to -108° C, an overall increase in the absorption coefficients was noticed. The maximum increase of 5% occurred at λ = 6020 Å. In general, the absorption is linearly dependent on temperature.

Subduction Of The Caribbean Plate And Basement Uplifts In The Overriding South American Plate, James N. Kellogg, William E. Bonini May 1982

Subduction Of The Caribbean Plate And Basement Uplifts In The Overriding South American Plate, James N. Kellogg, William E. Bonini

James N Kellogg

Abstract. The new tectonic interpretations presented in this paper are based on geologic field mapping and gravity data supplemented by well logs, seismic profiles, and radiometric and earthquake data. The present Caribbean-South American plate boundary is the South Caribbean marginal fault, where subduction is indicated by folding and thrusting in the deformed belt and a seismic zone that dips 30o to the southeast and terminates 200 km below the Maracaibo Basin. The Caribbean-South American convergence rate is estimated as 1.9 +_. 0.3 cm/yr on the basis of the 390-km length of the seismic zone and a thermal equilibration time of …

Thermometry And Barometry Of Precambrian Orthogneisses And Related Rocks From The Minnesota River Valley, Southwestern Minnesota, Paula J. Leier May 1982

Thermometry And Barometry Of Precambrian Orthogneisses And Related Rocks From The Minnesota River Valley, Southwestern Minnesota, Paula J. Leier

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Granulite facies metamorphism is reported to have occurred in the Granite Falls-Montivideo area of the Minnesota River Valley and a broader view of the valley is taken to determine the extent of granulite facies metamorphism. Pressures and temperatures of metamorphism were determined using two geothermometers and one geobarometer. Based upon two-feldspar and garnet-biotite thermometers, temperature of metamorphism is approximated at 600 °c. Metamorphic pressures based on the reaction cordierite= garnet+ quartz + sillimanite were probably between 4 and 6 Kbars. Based on barometry and thermometry, it is suggested the Algoman o rogeny (2600 m.y. ago) was at least upper amphibolite …

Tb105: The Composition Of Equilibrium Soil Solutions From Forest Soil B Horizons, Ivan J. Fernandez, Roland A. Struchtemeyer

Technical Bulletins

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the composition of B horizon equilibrium soil solutions from selected Maine forest soils. The B horizon was chosen for evaluation because it (1) best expressed the weathering processes active in the soil, (2) occupied the greatest volume of the solum, (3) had the most complex chemistry of the major horizons, and (4) provided the major corridor in forested ecosystems for subsurface flow and chemical alteration of ground waters.

Use Of Molybdenum For Soybean Production, Monroe Rasnake May 1982

Use Of Molybdenum For Soybean Production, Monroe Rasnake

Soil Science News and Views

Molybdenum (Mo) is a micronutrient that is required by soybeans in very small amounts. As little as 0.5 parts per million of Mo in soybean tissue is sufficient for normal growth. Compare this with a phosphorus sufficiency level of about 2,000 parts per million. However, even though only small amounts are needed, a Mo deficiency can drastically reduce yields of soybeans.

Brewster And Pseudo-Brewster Angles Of Uniaxial Crystal Surfaces And Their Use For Determination Of Optical Properties, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam May 1982

Brewster And Pseudo-Brewster Angles Of Uniaxial Crystal Surfaces And Their Use For Determination Of Optical Properties, M. Elshazly-Zaghloul, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Brewster and pseudo-Brewster angles are defined for surfaces of transparent and absorbing uniaxial crystals parallel and perpendicular to the optic axis. Two Brewster angles of a transparent uniaxial crystal surface parallel to the optic axis, measured when the optic axis is oriented perpendicular and parallel to the plane of incidence, readily determine the ordinary and extraordinary indices No and Ne. No and Ne can also be obtained from two Brewster angles measured on a surface perpendicular to the optic axis in contact with two media of different refractive indices. Conditions for the existence of two …

The Shape Seeker Algorithm, Ladawn Haws May 1982

The Shape Seeker Algorithm, Ladawn Haws

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper gives a brief description of several well known fuzzy objective function clustering algorithms, and discusses the convergence properties of this type of algorithm. The Shape Seeker algorithm, an adaptive norm algorithm, is then described in detail, and convergence established. It is compared to the other algorithms by examining the clusterings it produces on several data sets.

Nonpoint Source Transport Model For Indicator Bacteria From Western Rangeland Watersheds, Everett P. Springer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Grazing is a primary land use in much of the western United States, but little is known about grazing impacts on water quality. The most sensitive water quality indicators of grazing are the fecal indicator bacteria. The objective of this study was to develop a general transport model describing the movement of fecal indicator bacteria from upland sources to channel systems.

Model development was done using simulated rainfall and a runoff surface 30.48 m by 1.83 m.

Initially the runoff surface was smooth concrete and was used to examine the effects of distance from the outlet on coliform counts by …

Genesis Of A Vertisol And An Associated Palexeroll In Northern Utah, Robert C. Graham May 1982

Genesis Of A Vertisol And An Associated Palexeroll In Northern Utah, Robert C. Graham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The genetic relationship between a Vertisol and an associated Mollisol with an argillic horizon was studied. These soils are taxadjuncts of the Hawkins and Ostler series, respectively. They occur in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah and have similar parent materials, altitudes, and slope percentages. Ostler soils have a dense cover of Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and occur preferentially on north aspects. Mule's ear (Wyethia amplexicaulis) is the dominant vegetation on Hawkins soils, which are most frequent on south aspects. Erosion is prevalent on Hawkins soils because the mule's ear does not adequately cover the soil …
