Problems At Resonance For First And Second Order Differential Equations Via Lyapunov-Like Functions, J. J. Nieto Apr 1982

Problems At Resonance For First And Second Order Differential Equations Via Lyapunov-Like Functions, J. J. Nieto

Mathematics Technical Papers

Recently [7,8,10] an attempt is made successfully to combine the two basic techniques namely, Lyapunov-Schmidt method and the method of upper and lower solutions, to investigate the existence of periodic solutions of differential equations. When we wish to extend such results for systems of differential equations there are two possibilities to follow. One is to generalize the method of upper and lower solutions using a suitable cone, and the other is to utilize the concept of tyapunov-like functions and the theory of differential inequalities. In the paper, we shall discuss the existence of problems at resonance for first and second …

Synthesis Of Potential Insecticides And New Synthetic Applications Of Vinamidinium And Azavinamidinium Salts: Reactions With Reducing Agents And Nitro Compounds, Michael J. Lizzi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses the research conducted in two areas: the synthesis of potential insecticides and the investigation of vinamidinium and azavinamidinium salt chemistry. Firstly, four classes of compounds were synthesized and characterized in the investigation of new potential insecticides. These classes of compounds include a-formamidine methyl esters, amidines, diacylhydrazines and 2,5-disubstituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and were characterized via NMR and infrared spectroscopy. This account also reveals and discusses the experimental conditions and procedures necessary for the preparation of these potential insecticides. Secondly, the reaction of [ 3-(dimethyl amino)-2-azaprop-2-en-1-ylidene] dimethyl ammonium chloride (Gold's Reagent) with nucleophiles such as activated (nitro) methylene compounds was examined …

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen Apr 1982

An Interval Arithmetic Newton Method For Solving Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Ronald I. Greenberg, Eldon R. Hansen

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We introduce an interval Newton method for bounding solutions of systems of nonlinear equations. It entails three sub-algorithms. The first is a Gauss-Seidel type step. The second is a real (non-interval) Newton iteration. The third solves the linearized equations by elimination. We explain why each sub-algorithm is desirable and how they fit together to provide solutions in as little as 1/3 to 1/4 the time required by a commonly used method due to Krawczyk.

Random-Phase Approximation To One-Body Transition Matrix Elements For Open-Shell Atoms, Anthony F. Starace, Siamak Shahabi Apr 1982

Random-Phase Approximation To One-Body Transition Matrix Elements For Open-Shell Atoms, Anthony F. Starace, Siamak Shahabi

Anthony F. Starace Publications

A graphical procedure is presented for evaluating each term in the equation satisfied by the first-order transition matrix for an arbitrary (open-shell) atom. For those terms involving the interaction of excited virtual pairs of electrons with the ionic core, we introduce the approximation that there is no exchange of orbital or spin angular momentum with the ionic core. This approximation is shown to lead to the random-phase approximation (RPA) equations in the closed-shell-atom case; we use it to define the RPA for open-shell atoms. The single equation satisfied by the first-order transition matrix is used to obtain a set of …

Preliminary Groundwater Investigations In Relation To Soil Salinity At Fitzgerald, Western Australia, C J. Henschke Apr 1982

Preliminary Groundwater Investigations In Relation To Soil Salinity At Fitzgerald, Western Australia, C J. Henschke

Resource management technical reports

This study investigated soil salinity problems in relation to new land releases at Fitzgerald near the south coast of Western Australia. Fairly widely spaced set of bores was established to compare the groundwater hydrology regimes beneath cleared and virgin land. A large storage of soluble salts (over 100 kgm-2 in some profiles) was measured in the pallid zone clays under both cleared and virgin land conditions. Seasonal fresh to brackish perched watertables were found to overlie highly saline deep waterbles at a number of valley sites on land which has been cleared for agriculture during the past 15 years. Salinity …

Ground-Water Flow Along The Total Shoreline Of Austin Lake And Its Environmental Contribution To Pollution Of The Lake, William Thomas Williams Apr 1982

Ground-Water Flow Along The Total Shoreline Of Austin Lake And Its Environmental Contribution To Pollution Of The Lake, William Thomas Williams

Dissertations

The vertical direction of ground-water flow in Austin Lake was determined by placing minipiezometers along the entire shoreline at fifty randomly selected sites. Ground-water samples were taken at each site and the specific conductivity of the water samples was determined along with the chloride and phosphate content. The data were analyzed to determine if there were any relationships among water movement, chemical content, and the presence or absence of an onshore septic tank. The minipiezometer data show that the primary direction of water movement through the sediment-water interface is downward but may become reversed at localized regions as conditions vary. …

Evaluation Of The Utah Operational Weather Modification Program, Geoffrey E. Hill Apr 1982

Evaluation Of The Utah Operational Weather Modification Program, Geoffrey E. Hill

Reports

This study is an evaluation of a winter orographic cloud seeding project in Utah. The evaluation is based upon both intensive field measurements and historic~l records. For the field measurements, ground and airborne data were collected during February and March, 1981 in the vicinity of the Tushar Mountains. In evaluating the physical data three aspects are emphasized: the dispersal of artificial ice nuclei, the distribution of supercooled liquid water, and the growth and trajectories of precipitation. Ground based measurements were made by K and X band radars, a dual frequency microwave radiometer, a network of precipitation gauges, an ice nucleus …

A Laboratory Study Of Nongenetic Embryonic Adaptation To Salinity And Its Subsequent Effects Upon Larval Development Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Holthius, Paul Jay Anninos Apr 1982

A Laboratory Study Of Nongenetic Embryonic Adaptation To Salinity And Its Subsequent Effects Upon Larval Development Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Holthius, Paul Jay Anninos

OES Theses and Dissertations

Fertilized embryos of the grass shrimp Palamonetes pugio Holthuis (Decapoda; Caridea) were exposed to two levels of salinity [5 ppt (exposed) and 20 ppt (control)] during incubation to determine the extent to which embryonic adaptation influences subsequent larval development. Larval response to embryonic exposure was measured at three salinities (5 ppt, 10 ppt, and 20 ppt) as the fraction of larvae surviving to metamorphosis and the duration (in days) of larval development. The survival rate of larvae hatched from control, or non-adapted, embryos was significantly influenced by rearing salinity. The differences in survival of pre-adapted larvae (exposed group), however, were …

The Regioselective 3-Alkylation Of Piperidine, Richard Dunn Todd Apr 1982

The Regioselective 3-Alkylation Of Piperidine, Richard Dunn Todd

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The compounds: 3-allylpiperidine, 3-ethylpiperidine and 3-n-butylpiperidine have been synthesized by regioselectively alkylating the three position of piperidine. Piperidine was converted to N-chloropiperidine and then dehydrohalogenated to produce Δ1-piperideine. The enamide anion was generated by adding solutions of Δ1-piperideine to ethylmagnesium bromide or lithium diisopropylamide. Addition of alkylhalides produced 3-alkyl- Δ1-piperideine which could be reduced or alkyllithiated to give 3-alkylpiperidines or 2,3-dialkylpiperidines respectively.

The yields of products were low and the reaction generated a continuum of mono- and di-alkylpiperidines and there was evidence that several dimeric piperideines were formed. The low yields were discussed in …

Ortho Cyclization Reactions Of Catecholamines, Robert Lee Hudkins Apr 1982

Ortho Cyclization Reactions Of Catecholamines, Robert Lee Hudkins

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

A study was undertaken to examine the potential for ortho cyclization associated with the synthesis of 1,2,3,4,-tetrahydroisoquinolines using the Pictet-Spengler reaction. Specif1cally, the condensation of the biogenic amines, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine were carefully examined in light of current literature and the facility and extent of ortho cyclization in each case. The para isomers of these three biogenic amine condensation products were isolated and characterized, while only the ortho isomer derived from dopamine was found stable and could be isolated, and structurally identified. These studies demonstrate that a second cyclization product does, in fact, form in each instance and that …

A Comparison Of Recruitment Strategies Among Brachyuran Crustacean Megalopae Of The York River, Lower Chesapeake Bay And Adjacent Shelf Waters, David Franklin Johnson

OES Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-one stations forming a transect of the Pamunkey River, York River, lower Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal waters were sampled from July through September 1980. The megalopa stages of 11 brachyuran species were sampled. Vertical and horizontal distributions are described for each species in relation to salinity and water column stratification. The megalopae are assigned to three apparent recruitment strategies: retained estuarine, expelled estuarine and retained coastal megalopae. the megalopa stages of estuarine adults, such as Hexapanopeus angustifrons, Neopanope sayi, Panopeus herbstii and Pinnotheres ostreum, are retained in estuarine epibenthic waters, while Rhithropanopeus harrisii are retained in slightly shallower …

Probability Of Selecting The "Correct" Model And Determination Of Sample Size In Regression, Chien-Pai Han, Wendell C. Smith Apr 1982

Probability Of Selecting The "Correct" Model And Determination Of Sample Size In Regression, Chien-Pai Han, Wendell C. Smith

Mathematics Technical Papers

Selection of variables in multiple linear regression is a common problem in model building. Let the "correct" model be the model which includes all variables that influence the dependent variable and excludes all others. This paper derives the probability of selecting the correct model for the sequential deletion procedure. A concept of least favorable selection is given. Based on this concept, the sample size is determined for given probability of selecting the correct model. The procedure is illustrated by considering the polynomial regression.

Existence Of Periodic Solutions Of Semilinear Parabolic Equations And The Method Of Upper And Lower Solutions, V. Lakshmikantham, R. Kannan Apr 1982

Existence Of Periodic Solutions Of Semilinear Parabolic Equations And The Method Of Upper And Lower Solutions, V. Lakshmikantham, R. Kannan

Mathematics Technical Papers

The existence of periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic equations has been investigated by several authors [1-10,15-18] by different methods such as the method of Poincare operator and the theory of monotone operators. In a recent paper [1] Amann also obtains multiplicity results. Recently, an attempt was made successfully in [11,12,16] to combine the two basic techniques, namely the method of upper and lower solutions and the method of Lyapunov-Schmidt to investigate existence of periodic solutions of first and second order equations. In this paper we continue this fruitful approach to study existence of periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic equations with …

The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Hydrocarbons In Atmospheric Deposition From Stations Surrounding Lower Chesapeake Bay, David Benjamin Webber Apr 1982

The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Hydrocarbons In Atmospheric Deposition From Stations Surrounding Lower Chesapeake Bay, David Benjamin Webber

OES Theses and Dissertations

Hydrocarbon concentrations were determined in bulk, wet, and dry deposition samples from urban and non-urban locations surrounding lower Chesapeake Bay. Mean hydrocarbon concentrations in bulk deposition samples were over three times greater at the urban station indicating a localized source. The major hydrocarbons present were n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and the unresolved complex mixture (UCM). The PAH and the UCM were an indication of significant anthropogenic inputs while the odd/even distribution of the n-alkanes was an indication of biogenic sources. These findings indicated seasonal trends of highest biogenic hydrocarbon inputs in the spring and summer months and highest anthropogenic …

A Capacitance Wavestaff And Measurements Of Wave Height Decay In The Surf Zone, David L. Timpy

OES Theses and Dissertations

A wavestaff system utilizing capacitance was developed to measure wave heights in the surf zone. Data were used to test the assumption that wave height decays linearly across the surf zone. The instrument system consisted of two wavestaffs and housing which contained the needed electronic circuits and a data recorder. Acceptable frequency response for waves of period greater than two seconds could not be obtained if sensor wires were greater than 0.35 mm in diameter. The size used was 0.35 mm.

Migration Patterns For Age And Sex Classes Of Blackbirds And Starlings, Richard A. Dolbeer Mar 1982

Migration Patterns For Age And Sex Classes Of Blackbirds And Starlings, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater), and Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are ubiquitous breeding birds in much of North America. The Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) is an abundant breeding bird east of the Rocky Mountains (Dolbeer and Stehn 1979). Although these species are widely dispersed and generally unassociated during the nesting season, they often associated closely in winter roosts containing up to 10 million birds in the southern United States (Meanley and Webb 1965, Meanley 1971). Little is known about the comparative migration patterns of the four species and the resulting mixture of local breeding populations in winter. Comparative …

The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel Mar 1982

The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the more difficult problems confronting software engineers today is the construction of accurate predictive models of the software development process, [21,[8] and [93. It has long been recognized that one of the most essential elements of any successful model of this process is a quantification of the complexity of software systems. During the past several years a great deal of work has been performed by researchers such as Halstead [3], McCab [5], and others in an attempt to develop metrics which adequately capture the complexity of software systems. Yet one very important aspect of software development complexity seems …

Rodenticide Evaluation In The Hudson Valley During 1980 And 1981, Paul F. Steblein, Milo E. Richmond

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

The objective of Cornell University's research program is to develop a successful integrated system to control pine and meadow vole damage in the apple orchards of the Hudson Valley. This is being accomplished by determining the effect of habitat manipulation and rodenticides on vole populations. We are also doing research to quantify the amount of damage apple trees sustain from various densities of pine voles. By coupling the results of these two avenues of research, we hope to provide growers with a cost-effective pest management plan. Efficacy of Chlorophacinone (Chempar, Inc.) and Brodificoum (ICI Americas, Inc.) in various populations and …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum) and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were studied in a commercial apple orchard in the Hudson Valley of New York during April and May 1981. Selected voles were given miniature radio transmitters and then tracked before and after herbicide application. A total of eight pine and meadow voles were tracked throughout the experimental period. Home range size decreased on the day following herbicide application but showed an increase from day 1 to day 5 & 7 after application. Movements away from the tree line into the aisles did not change significantly after herbicide …

A Current Assessment Of Vole Damage And Numbers And Of Methods Used To Control Voles In Ontario Apple Orchards, Ronald J. Brooks, Stephen A. Struger

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A province-wide evaluation of the amount, distribution, source and control of damage to Ontario apple trees was initiated. Data we re obtained from 280 responses to a questionnaire distributed to growers across Ontario, and from trap censuses in three widely separated areas. Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) damaged or destroyed 8,423 trees in our questionnaire sample and other mammals damaged another 10,307 trees. No relationship was found between application of rodenticide and levels of damage, but rodenticide-treated baits sharply reduced numbers of voles on our trap plots. Orchards with high levels of damage were on average only one-third as …

Orchard Rodent Baits: Toxicant Evaluations And Vole Pellet Size Preferences, Mark H. Merson, Ross E. Byers

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Residues of the anticoagulant rodenticide Brodifacoum in meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) sampled from an orchard popula¬tion after broadcast treatment with the commercial bait VOLID decreased as the orchard rate of application and concentration of Brodifacoum in the bait decreased. Oral LD— determinations for the experimental rodenticide EL-614 were 8.8 mg/kg for meadow voles and 24.0 mg/kg for pine voles (M. pinetorum) . No size preference by meadow and pine voles for bait pellets from 2.38 to 4.76 mm in diameter was observed in lab¬oratory tests.
