Giant Coercivities And Chemical Short-Range Order In Pr-Ga-Fe Metallic Glasses, S.G. Cornelison, David J. Sellmyer, J.G. Zhao, Z.D. Chen Mar 1982

Giant Coercivities And Chemical Short-Range Order In Pr-Ga-Fe Metallic Glasses, S.G. Cornelison, David J. Sellmyer, J.G. Zhao, Z.D. Chen

David Sellmyer Publications

Results of magnetic, Mössbauer, and structural studies are presented for (Pr80Ga20)100-xFex metallic glasses, where 0≤x≤30. For x≥20 two magnetic transitions are observed and the structural studies indicate the presence of a phase separation into at least two glassy phases, one being Fe-rich and the other Fe-deficient. Coercivities above 60 kOe are observed and the results are discussed in terms of a model involving the magnetic properties of the two phases. Are Vpd3 And Nbpd3 Itinerant Ferromagnets?, W.L. Burmester, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Low-field magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization results are reported for polycrystalline samples of NbPd3, VPd3, and iron doped VPd3. Recent self-consistent, spin-polarized band calculations have predicted that the pure compounds are itinerant ferromagnets. Down to 1.6 K there is no evidence for either magnetic ordering or exchange enhancement in VPd3 and NbPd3. The Fe-doped alloys exhibit transitions at low temperatures to a magnetic cluster-glass state. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Magnetic, Mössbauer, And Resistivity Studies Of Amorphous Fe74Zr26 And Fe81Hf19 Alloys, C. L. Chien, K. M. Unruh, A. Levy, Sy_Hwang Liou, J. P. Stokes, R.J. Gambino, K. Fukamichi Mar 1982

Magnetic, Mössbauer, And Resistivity Studies Of Amorphous Fe74Zr26 And Fe81Hf19 Alloys, C. L. Chien, K. M. Unruh, A. Levy, Sy_Hwang Liou, J. P. Stokes, R.J. Gambino, K. Fukamichi

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Amorphous metal-metal samples of Fe74Zr26 and Fe81Hf19 have been studied by bulk magnetic, Mössbauer spectroscopy and resistivity measurements. The values of Tc have been determined to be 285 K and 295 K for Fe74Zr26 and Fe81Hf19, respectively. Both the magnetic isotherms and Mössbauer measurements indicate that these samples are ferromagnetics. The isomer shifts and the quadrupole interactions are much smaller than those of amorphous Fe-metalloid systems. The P(H) are broad and extend to small H values. Negative temperature coefficients of the resistivity are observed at low …

The Aquatic Toxicity Of Organic Compounds To Embryo-Larval Stages Of Fish And Amphibians, Jeffrey A. Black, Wesley J. Birge, Willaim E. Mcdonnell, Albert G. Westerman, Barbara A. Ramey, Donald M. Bruser

KWRRI Research Reports

Aquatic toxicity tests were conducted on 11 organic compounds considered hazardous to water resources. The toxicity of each compound was evaluated using embryo-larval stages of two to eight fish and amphibian species. Exposure was initiated at fertilization and maintained through 4 days posthatching. The animal test species exhibited varying degrees of sensitivity to the selected toxicants. Combined frequencies for mortality and teratogenesis at 4 days posthatching gave LC50 ranges of 3.66 to 8.25 mg/L for benzene, 1.16 to 22.42 mg/L for carbon tetrachloride, 0.11 to 1.20 mg/L for chlorobenzene, 2.03 to > 68 mg/L for chloroform, 3.01 to 5.56 mg/L …

Sunlight Induced Movement Of Planktonic Organisms And Their Relationships To Water Movements, John Calkins, Ed Colley, Jay Wallingford, Carol Hulsey, Kathy Lohr, Marc Bolling

KWRRI Research Reports

Previous studies have shown the planktonic organisms of various natural water bodies to be quite sensitive to the levels of solar ultraviolet radiation incident at the water surface in summer. It has been assumed that the majority of the phytoplankton are simply carried about in the mass of the water which they inhabit with little control of their position or sunlight exposure. Photosynthetic microorganisms must strike a delicate balance with regard to solar radiation; they must obtain enough visible light for adequate photosynthesis while avoiding an excessive exposure to the injurious solar UV-B radiation.

It is proposed that the circulation …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Y(Al₁₋ₓfeₓ)₁₂, Ying-Chang Yang, Gary J. Long, William Joseph James, R. Yeh

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to investigate the magnetic behavior of 3d atoms in the ThMn12‐type structure, the structured and magnetic properties of Y(Al1-xFex)12 were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The Y(Al1-xFex)12 intermetallic compounds crystallize in the ThMn12‐type structure for x in the range of 0.3-0.5. The results can be explained on the basis of the preferential atomic ordering observed in the ternary compounds. The compounds are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures of 130, 170, and 280 K, respectively, for x values of 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5.

Mineralogy And Phase Chemistry Of Mount St. Helens Tephra Sets W And Y As Keys To Their Identification, Diane R. Smith, W. P. Leeman

Geosciences Faculty Research

Voluminous and widespread tephras were produced frequently during the last 36,000 yr of volcanic activity at Mount St. Helens. Numerous tephra sets have been defined by D. R. Mullineaux, J. H. Hyde, and M. Rubin (1975, U.S. Geological Survey Journal of Research, 3, 329–335) on the basis of field relations, Fe-Mg phenocryst assemblage, and 14C chronology and are valuable marker beds for regional stratigraphic studies. In this study modal abundances and mineral compositions were determined (via petrographic and electron microprobe techniques) for numerous samples of individual layers within tephra sets W and Y to evaluate the degree of …

Economic Regionalization Of India 1960-61 And 1970-71., Rabindranath De Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A massive investment programme has been undertaken in India through the process of planning. But the effects of such investment on economic growth are worked out only at the aggregate level for the country as a whole; its contribution to the growth of the different regions in the country is yet to be adequately understood. Now, for a large country like India with significant regional disparities in the level of living, an essential objective of development policy should be to reduce the existing economic inequality between the regions | in particular, the inequality in the level of living. The priority …

Replacement Strategies For Ageing Assets With Specific Reference To Coconut Plams In Kerala., Chandan Mukherjee Dr. Feb 1982

Replacement Strategies For Ageing Assets With Specific Reference To Coconut Plams In Kerala., Chandan Mukherjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Produotion assets which deteriorate in performance with time (or age) are required to be replaced. In general, a stream of benefits and costa are associated with every productive asset, be it a machine or a tree. Ugually, in replacement theory, the benefits and costs are taken as given functions of the age of the asset. These functions provide the oriteria for identifying the pÅ‚ysical condition of the asset. In simple replacement models, an asset is replaced by an ider tical one. The objective of a replacement policy is to find a sequence of time pointe (or alternatively, replacement ages) for …

Pathwise Stochastic Calculus Of Continuous Semimartingales., Rajeeva L. Karandikar Dr. Feb 1982

Pathwise Stochastic Calculus Of Continuous Semimartingales., Rajeeva L. Karandikar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion was introduced by Ito. Stochastic integration with respect to martingales (and seminartingales) was developed by Kunita-Watanable [24 Fisk [9), Courrege D] and Meyer [33]. In this thesis, we study the path wise stochastic calculus restricting ourselves to continuous semimartingales. Here is a brief summary of our results. In Chapter I, we obtain a pathwise formula for the quadratic variation process < M > of a continuous local martingale M. Recall theat < M > is the natural increasing process in the Doob-Meyer decomposition of M. By a part wice formula for M> we mean a formula describing cxplicitly a w-path …

Estimation In Errors-In-Variables Models., Manoranjan Pal Dr. Feb 1982

Estimation In Errors-In-Variables Models., Manoranjan Pal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In many econometric investigations, the 'errors-in variables' (EIVs) are not negligible (Morgenstern, 1963). Examination of 25 series relating to national accounts by Langaskens and Rijekeghan (1974) showed that the standard deviations of the errors ranged from 5 to 77 per cent of the average value of the corresponding variable. Such errors may vitiate least-squares (LS) estimation of regression coefficients (Johnaton, 1972). The well-known methods (ML; IV, including grouping method) proposed for handling classical EIV model (EMM) in regression analysis muffer from serious linitations. Same of them make strong distributional assumptions about the errors (and the regressors) and/or assume prier knowledge …

The Alfsen-Errors Structure Topology In The Theory Of Complex L1-Preduals., T. S.S.R.K. Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A complex Banach space X is said to be an L1-predual if X* is isometric to L1() for some non-negative measure Well known examples of L1-preduals include the space C(X) of complex-valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space and the abstract M-spaces of Kakutani. In [19], Grothendieck introduced a class of L'-preduals, now known as G-spaces, and conjectured that those are all the L'-preduals. In his 1964 memoir [35], Lândenstrauss settled this conjecture by exhibiting a wide class of Banach spaces, other than G-spaces, which are L1-preduals. He also gave several characterizations and interest- ing properties of L1-preduals in …

Structure And Inter-Relations Of The Land, Labour, Credit And Product Markets Of South Kanara: A Study Of A Backward Agricultural Economy., K. Nagaraj Dr.

Doctoral Theses

South Kanara is a predominantly rural and agricultural district in the state of Karnataka in South India, given largely to the cultivation of a single subsistence crop (paddy) which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of its gross cropped area. The agricultural technology is Primitive, with little use of 'modern' inputs like chemical fertilisers, HYV seeds etc. There are no large scale or modern industries in the district. The little manufacturing activities that exist are mostly of the primary processing type, carried out in small establishments and households. There is however, rather high incidence of the so-called 'tertiary' activities like …

The Red Eyed Turtle Dove (Streptopelia Semitorquata) As An Agricultural Pest In Nigeria, Modupe Akande Feb 1982

The Red Eyed Turtle Dove (Streptopelia Semitorquata) As An Agricultural Pest In Nigeria, Modupe Akande

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

Preliminary results compiled from visual observations and questionnaires indicated that a large variety of crops including soyabean, cowpea, groundnut, maize, rice, sorghum were attacked at planting and seedling stages of growth by the red-eyed turtle dove (Streptopelia semitorquata). The social conditions under which this bird is protected, by social taboos and also as an attractive and common household pet in many parts of Nigeria, limit the control options that could be used to stop its deleterious activities. In the meantime research efforts are being directed to the understanding of the population ecology and biology of the species as a prerequisite …

Bird Damage To Sunflowers In The Sacramento Valley, California, Michael L. Avery, Richard Dehaven Feb 1982

Bird Damage To Sunflowers In The Sacramento Valley, California, Michael L. Avery, Richard Dehaven

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

Damage caused by birds to ripening sunflower was evaluated in 60 fields (about 70% of all planted fields) in the Sacramento Valley, California, during 1980 and 1981. Overall monetary losses were roughly $6,800 (24 fields) and $7,400 (36 fields) in 1980 and 1981, respectively. The percentage losses estimated for the individual fields were low, ranging from 0 to 5.4% of the crop; in about two-thirds of the fields, losses were <0.5%. For the 12 fields with the highest (≥1.0%) damage, the average per acre monetary loss was roughly $18. Damage levels within local areas were relatively constant between the two years. Although several species of birds caused damage, house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) were apparently most important. Their foraging behavior differed from that of blackbirds, which fed extensively on insects in addition to sunflower. The presence of large numbers of blackbirds or finches in fields was not always an indication of bird damage. Additional research may lead to recommendations for alleviating the moderate losses which a few growers now incur.

Evaluation Of Zinc Phosphide Bait For Pocket Gopher Control On Forest Land, Victor G. Barnes Jr., Richard M. Anthony, James Evans, Gerald D. Lindsey Feb 1982

Evaluation Of Zinc Phosphide Bait For Pocket Gopher Control On Forest Land, Victor G. Barnes Jr., Richard M. Anthony, James Evans, Gerald D. Lindsey

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

Laboratory bioassays and field tests were conducted to determine if zinc phosphide baits would control pocket gophers in forest plantations. Zinc phosphide baits generally were less effective than the strychnine alkaloid-oat bait commonly used by forest managers to control gophers. However, a carrot bait with 0.75% zinc phosphide showed potential as a substitute for strychnine. Size of carrot bait and grooming activity of gophers were identified as important factors affecting efficacy of baits.

Snares For Predator Control, Major L. Boddicker Feb 1982

Snares For Predator Control, Major L. Boddicker

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

The use of snares predates recorded history. The snare was first used when ancient man realized that an association between a tightening loop of vine and an ensnared animal was something which he could construct and repeat. The current increased interest in snares has been a result of restricted chemical tools in animal damage control resulting in a new look at old mechanical methods. The increased value of pelts of predators has brought efforts by private trappers to improve snaring as a tool. As a result, the ancient art of snaring has been greatly improved over the last decade. New …

Predator Problems When Using Sheep And Goats In Managing Brush On Rangelands, James E. Bowns Feb 1982

Predator Problems When Using Sheep And Goats In Managing Brush On Rangelands, James E. Bowns

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

Rangelands occupy a large portion of the western United States and the world. Grazing by ruminant animals provides the only means of obtaining usable products from these lands. Sheep and goats are more efficient producers, better adapted to many ranges, and are useful in controlling or manipulating shrubs and other undesirable vegetation which results in improved range conditions and increased water yields. There has been a general decline in sheep and goat numbers and a shift toward cattle. Predation has been a major factor in the abandonment of many sheep and goat operations and the shift to other livestock. A …

Rodent Control In Barbados, Charley O. Browne Feb 1982

Rodent Control In Barbados, Charley O. Browne

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 10th (1982)

As a result of an increase in the number of cases of the disease, leptospirosis, occurring between the years 1961 and 1971, the Government of Barbados became concerned about this health problem. With assistance from Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) surveys were carried out with a hope of ascertaining the possible cause of the problem and to determine subsequent remedial action.
