Resource Management Thrusts And Opportunities: Blm-Administered Public Lands, D. Dean Bibles Jan 1982

Resource Management Thrusts And Opportunities: Blm-Administered Public Lands, D. Dean Bibles

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Management of public land wildlife resources is facing its greatest challenge. It will be a monumental task to provide for wildlife's needs and maintain a viable species diversity and abundance in view of the many conflicts and strong competition from other uses. I believe it can be done, but only through an appropriate emphasis on well-planned priorities, management innovations, and an even higher level of cooperation between the federal land managers, the State wildlife agencies, and the concerned private organizations and individuals.

Interactions Of Northern Fur Seals And Commercial Fisheries, Charles W. Fowler Jan 1982

Interactions Of Northern Fur Seals And Commercial Fisheries, Charles W. Fowler

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Under international agreement, the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is managed with the objective of obtaining a maximum sustainable yield. Currently the harvest is restricted to subadult males; however, between 1956 and 1968 the fur seal population of the Pribilof Islands was subjected to a harvest of females. This harvest was justified, in part, as an attempt to stimulate the production of greater quantities of harvestable animals (Chapman 1981). A reduction in the population occurred during this period as can be seen in Figure 1. As described in York and Hartley (1981), the female harvest itself provides an …

The Fayum Primate Forest Revisited, Thomas M. Bown, Mary Kraus, Scott Wing, John Fleagle, Bruce H. Tiffney, Elwyn Simons, Carl F. Vondra Jan 1982

The Fayum Primate Forest Revisited, Thomas M. Bown, Mary Kraus, Scott Wing, John Fleagle, Bruce H. Tiffney, Elwyn Simons, Carl F. Vondra

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In Oligocene times, the Fayum area of northern Egypt was a subtropical to tropical lowland coastal plain with damp soils and seasonal rainfall that supported an abundance and variety of vegetation, including lianes (large vines), tall trees, and possibly mangroves, and a large and varied vertebrate fauna. The Oligocene marine strandline was close by and principal Jebel Qatrani Formation streams were probably brackish several kilometers inland due to tidal incursions. Sediments of the Jebel Qatrani Formation were deposited by several large meandering streams, associated with minor but sometimes extensive flood basin ponds. These rocks provide no evidence for the former …

Liming Needs Of Kentucky Soils, William O. Thom Jan 1982

Liming Needs Of Kentucky Soils, William O. Thom

Soil Science News and Views

A sound liming program is the first step in building and maintaining soil fertility. Lime lowers the acidity (raises pH) of soil and prevents the adverse effects of high concentrations of soluble aluminum, iron, and manganese on crop growth--effects often associated with acid soils. Maintaining a suitable pH assures adequate levels of calcium and magnesium. Liming an acid soil increases the availability of most essential plant nutrients, increases the efficiency of fertilizers, improves the effectiveness of some herbicides, and makes beneficial soil organisms more active.

Investigation Of Subsurface Tar-Sand Deposits In Western Kentucky, David A. Williams, Martin C. Noger, Patrick J. Gooding Jan 1982

Investigation Of Subsurface Tar-Sand Deposits In Western Kentucky, David A. Williams, Martin C. Noger, Patrick J. Gooding

Information Circular--KGS

Tar sands (also referred to as asphaltic sandstones, heavy-oil deposits, or bitumen-impregnated sandstones) in western Kentucky have been recognized as a potential mineral resource for over l 00 years. Past commercial development has been restricted largely to use as paving material. However, because of the ever-expanding demands for energy, these deposits have become the subject of increasing interest as a potential petroleum resource.

Previous studies have provided estimates of the potential resources of shallow mineable tar-sand deposits; these investigations have concentrated on the outcrop areas where tar sands are present at or near the surface. Data on subsurface deposits have …

Effect Of Herbicides On Performance Of Aerobic Dairy Lagoons, John D. Bottom, Joseph L. Taraba Jan 1982

Effect Of Herbicides On Performance Of Aerobic Dairy Lagoons, John D. Bottom, Joseph L. Taraba

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The herbicides glyphosate, bromacil, and dalapon were assessed for their affect on the oxygen uptake of microorganisms from an aerated dairy lagoon at 20 °C. The maximum recommended addition of herbicide active ingerdient to a lagoon is: glyphosate (isopropyl amino salt)—0.42 mg/L; bromacil—3.70 mg/L; and dalapon (85.8 percent Na salt and 14.2 percent Mg salt)—1.95 mg/L. In addition, microorganism isolates from the aerobic dairy lagoon were incubated under aerobic and anerobic conditions at room temperature to assess the effects of the herbicides. Under aerobic incubation, it was found that neither herbicide type nor herbicide concentration affected isolate growth. Under anaerobic …

The Petrochemistry Of The Ankara Volcanics, Central Turkey, Jay A. Ach Jan 1982

The Petrochemistry Of The Ankara Volcanics, Central Turkey, Jay A. Ach

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Ankara volcanics comprise a small volcanic field immediately to the north of Ankara, Turkey. This volcanic field is composed of a mixture of flows, tuffs, and agglomerates, with the flows ranging in composition from high-K basaltic andesite to rhyolite. Dacitic flows are the most common. A potassium-argon date gives a Middle Eocene age of 42.0 ± 1.6 m.y. The volcanics unconformably overlie Paleozoic sediments of the "Cimmerian continent" to the south and Mesozoic rocks of the Ankara melange to the north.
Results of analyses on 25 samples for major elements and Y, Sr, Rb, Ni, Cr, V, Co, Zn, …

The Structural Geology Of The Tectonized Ultramafic Suite Of The Table Mountain Massif, Bay Of Islands Complex, Newfoundland, Robert Whitney Blake Jan 1982

The Structural Geology Of The Tectonized Ultramafic Suite Of The Table Mountain Massif, Bay Of Islands Complex, Newfoundland, Robert Whitney Blake

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Table Mountain is the northernmost massif in the Bay of Islands Ophiolite. It represents a continuous, approximately 7 kilometer thick, section of residual harzburgite tectonites capped by a nearly flat-lying assemblage of deformed and undeformed cumulate rocks. The notable mesoscopic structural features of the massif include a zone of penetrative deformation extending upsection from the tectonized harzburgites approximately 500 meters into the dunites and basal cumulates. The orientation of the foliation and associated lineations as well as the inferred shear sense within the zone is consistent with that affecting the harzburgites. Highly deformed dunite lenses which range in thickness up …

The Geology Of The Oceanographer Transform Fault, Richard H. Moody Jr. Jan 1982

The Geology Of The Oceanographer Transform Fault, Richard H. Moody Jr.

Geology Theses and Dissertations

A detailed survey of the Oceanographer transform fault and environs at 35º N, 35ºW has yielded detailed information with respect to the generation and evolution of seafloor at a slowly accreting plate margin. From this data detailed bathymetric maps and maps of depth to basement have been constructed for a swath of seafloor 1800 km long and 100-200 km wide centered about the offset region. This data was used to subdivide major phases of seafloor spreading during the Tertiary. The ridge crest and all major topographic features near the transform appear to be affected by their proximity to the transform. …

Structure Of The Northern Margin Of The Bitlis Suture Zone Near Sivrice, Southeastern Turkey, Mark R. Hempton Jan 1982

Structure Of The Northern Margin Of The Bitlis Suture Zone Near Sivrice, Southeastern Turkey, Mark R. Hempton

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Detailed mapping near Sivrice shows that the northern margin of the Bitlis Suture zone consists of three major tectonostratigraphic units outcropping as distinct north-dipping thrust slices. From south to north these are: (1) the Pütürge Complex; (2) the Maden Complex; and (3) the Elazig Complex.
The pre-Eocene Pütürge Complex consists of 80% metapelite, 15% metaquartzite, and 5% recrystallized limestone. These rocks represent a continental margin sequence that has been metamorphosed to the lower greenschist facies. There are three generations of structural elements: (1) a transposition foliation and macroscopic isoclinal folds, (2) a crenulation cleavage and mesoscopic folds, and (3) kink …

Equidistance Relations: A New Bridge Between Geometric And Algebraic Structures, Thomas Q. Sibley Jan 1982

Equidistance Relations: A New Bridge Between Geometric And Algebraic Structures, Thomas Q. Sibley

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the transformations of certain geometric structures into algebraic ones and conversely. The algebraic notion of absolute value corresponds with the geometric one of equidistance. Further, latin squares with absolute values correspond to regular equidistance relations, "near groups" yield 1 point homogenous equidistance relations, and "near commutative groups" yield 2-point homogenous equidistance relations.

Ultrafilter Limits And Finitely Additive Probability, Thomas Q. Sibley Jan 1982

Ultrafilter Limits And Finitely Additive Probability, Thomas Q. Sibley

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Ultrafilter limits provide the natural convergence notion for finitely additive probability. The finitely additive infinitely divisible laws are closed under ultrafilter limits. The characteristic function of any convolution of finitely additive probability measures is the product of their characteristic functions.

Sorrel, Dicamba Soil Residual Effects, Glean, Veldt Grass, Declared Weeds Blackberry, Pattersons Curse, Penny Royal, J Moore

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

CONCLUSIONS This trial has confirmed the field observation that 2,4,5-T whilst giving good initial control of Pennyroyal, fails after a number of years. Round up has a far longer term effect. This can only be attributed to a more complete initial kill as both herbicides are essentially non residual. Further work needs to be conducted on Round up in combination with soil residual chemicals or multiple applications to overcome the problem of reinfestation from seed reserves. 81A1 -01
