Orientation Of Atoms Excited By Charged Particles At High Impact Energies, Don H. Madison, Kieth H. Winters Oct 1981

Orientation Of Atoms Excited By Charged Particles At High Impact Energies, Don H. Madison, Kieth H. Winters

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A perturbation-expansion approach is used to examine the sign of the orientation vector as a function of scattering angle and projectile charge. It is shown that for small angles, the sign of the orientation vector is different for oppositely charged projectiles consistent with the prediction of the classical grazing model. At large angles, on the other hand, the orientation vector for oppositely charged projectiles is shown to have the same sign.

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Polymer Supported Homogenous Oxidation Catalysts, Raymond J. Riley Oct 1981

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Polymer Supported Homogenous Oxidation Catalysts, Raymond J. Riley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) [salen] and Polystyrene bis(2,4-pentanedione)-propylene-1,3-diiminato Cobalt (II) [BAE] were prepared stepwise from chloromethylated polystyrene. In addition, a new preparation of a Schiff base was attempted resulting in Polystyrene bis(salicylaldehyde)-isobutylene-1,3-diiminoato Cobalt (II) being produced. Optimum reaction conditions were determined with regard tot ime, temperature, reaction ratios and solvent for each step for the reaction. The ability of the above named Cobalt (II) Schiff bases to oxidize 3-methyl indole to give the corresponding o-formylaminoacetophenone was also studied. One polymer-bound Schiff base cobalt catalyst (co-salen) demonstrated a very small amount of catalytic activity resulting in a minimum amount of o-formylaminoacetophenone …

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Dipolar Fluid Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw, Norman D. Hamer Oct 1981

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Dipolar Fluid Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw, Norman D. Hamer

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The existence of the dielectric constant epsilon is investigated for fluid mixtures of rigid polar molecules. The investigation is performed using the functional-derivative formalism for mixtures, and is closely analogous to that previously carried out for pure dipolar fluids (J. Chem. Phys. 68, 5199 (1978)). Sufficient conditions for the existence of epsilon are obtained in terms of the direct correlation function matrix c/sub alphabeta/(12). It is found that epsilon exists if c/sub alphabeta/(12) depends only on relative positions and orientations, and becomes asymptotic to -theta/sub alphabeta/(12)/kT at long range, where theta/sub alphabeta/(12) is the dipole--dipole potential between a molecule of …

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock Oct 1981

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock

OES Theses and Dissertations

A quantitative description of the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, was established using the density approach. A theoretical time density was estimated by the proportion of catch and catch per boat hour NOAA-NMFS fisheries statistics collected in Pamlico Sound, the Neuse River, and Core Sound. A clear quantitative description of brown shrimp migratory timing is found in the time densities. The impact of various physical tactors on the progress of the fishery in time and space can be objectively evaluated by using the time density statistics as dependent variables in modeling efforts. The distributions also enable …

Synthesis Of Dihydroisoquinolines And Tetrahydroisoquinolines, John J. Schlager Oct 1981

Synthesis Of Dihydroisoquinolines And Tetrahydroisoquinolines, John J. Schlager

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Dihydroisoquinolines and tetrahydroisoquinolines are compounds which possess a variety of pharmacological activities. New easier methods of synthetic manipulations of these structures is of constant interest in the pharmaceutical industry.

This paper describes a new three step method of preparing 1-alkyl- and 1-aryl-tetrahydroisoquinolines from a tetrahydroisoquinoline. The synthesis involves the N-chlorination of tetrahydroisoquinoline followed by dehydrohalogenation with potassium superoxide. The reaction products are the dihydroisoquinolines. Overall yields range from 85-96%. The unsubstituted, 1-methyl-, and 1-phenyl-J,4-dihydroisoquinolines have been formed. Organometallation of the unsubstituted dihydroisoquinoline provides the 1-substituted tetrahydroisoquinoline. The 1-benzyl-, 1-n-butyl-, 1-ethyl-, 1-methyl-, and 1-phenyl-1,2,J,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines were prepared. The use of Grignard and …

Water Wave Refraction With Non-Linear Theory, Im Sang Oh Oct 1981

Water Wave Refraction With Non-Linear Theory, Im Sang Oh

OES Theses and Dissertations

Two different kinds of wave refraction models are formulated in the present study using Stokes' third order wave theory. One type of model is utilized in a parametric study employing several different topographies. Wave trajectories obtained from this model, when obtained by using first and third order wave theory with and without the consideration of energy dissipation, show considerable differences. These differences are examined in more detail for a bottom of constant slope: (1) An approximate 10% difference occurs between the refraction coefficients obtained using the first and the third order wave theory. (2) Considerably different ray trajectories are detected …

Nonuniqueness Criteria For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mansour Samimi Oct 1981

Nonuniqueness Criteria For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mansour Samimi

Mathematics Technical Papers

We consider an initial value problem (1.1) [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation]. Several uniqueness results weaker than a Lipschitz condition are known, see [1,4]. However, results concerning with nonuniqueness criteria are rare. For the case n = 1, a nonuniqueness result was given in [5,6], see also [4]. Very recently the general case was also investigated in [3]. In this paper, we consider nonuniqueness problem from a very general point of view. Our first nonuniqueness result deals with the scalar case which extends the results of [5,6]. It also shows that when the conditions of general …

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii Oct 1981

Algal Dynamics In A Cypress Stand In The Seasonally Flooded Great Dismal Swamp, Joseph A. Atchue Iii

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of epiphytic algae and phytoplankton were studied at a cypress stand in the Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia. Mean epiphytic algal biomass was 19.9 g m-2 and mean planktonic biomass was 3.4 g m-2.Nutrient concentrations in the epiphytic algae and the litter were determined. The algae had mean concentrations of 1.67% and 0.18%. They were found to immobilize as much as 0.5 g N m-2 and 0.06 g P m-2. This suggests that the algae are important as nutrient conservers. The phytoplankton were composed primarily of Bacillariophyceae. They exhibited a more or less …

Glory In Optical Backscattering From Air Bubbles, Dean S. Langley, Philip L. Marston Sep 1981

Glory In Optical Backscattering From Air Bubbles, Dean S. Langley, Philip L. Marston

Physics Faculty Publications

Observations of light backscattered from air bubbles in a viscous liquid demonstrate an enhancement due to axial focusing. A physical-optics approximation for the cross-polarized scattering correctly describes the spacing of regular features observed. The non-cross polarized scattering is not adequately described by a single class of rays.

The Absolute Scattering Cross Section At 50 Mhz Ofequatorial Electrojet Irregularities, D. T. Farley, H. M. Ierkic, Bela G. Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

We have made carefully calibrated radar scattering measurements by using the large 50-MHz Jicamarca antenna. Typical results from the altitudes of maximum echo power for the vertically directed beam are σradar ∼1–2 × 10−10 m−1 for strong daytime electrojet conditions with type 1 irregularities present, with values a factor of 10 or so smaller during moderate conditions when only type 2 are observed. These cross sections, which are very large in comparison with those for incoherent scatter (σradar ≃5 × 10−18 m−1 for an electron density of 1011 m−3), are not nearly large enough, however, to cause pseudo-absorption events on …

Cover Crops And Crop Residues, Robert L. Blevins Sep 1981

Cover Crops And Crop Residues, Robert L. Blevins

Soil Science News and Views

In Kentucky, erosion hazard is by far the major limitation for use of cropland. It has been estimated that about 11.4 million acres are subject to erosion hazards. This means that approximately 75% of the soils potentially suited for cropland is sloping enough that risk of erosion is the greatest limitation in its use for crop production. Probably the greatest risk of erosion results from leaving row-cropped fields unprotected over winter. The use of cover crops and proper management of crop residues to stablize these soils during the winter months are relatively inexpensive agronomic practices that are very effective in …

Theoretical Study Of The Structural Phase Transition In Rbcaf3, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy Sep 1981

Theoretical Study Of The Structural Phase Transition In Rbcaf3, L. L. Boyer, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

We have made a first-principles study of the structural phase transition at Tc = 193 K in RbCaF3, using interionic potentials derived by the Gordon-Kim approach, and a new extension of the quasiharmonic approximation for the free energy. The transition is caused by instability of a triply degenerate R-point vibration which leads to a coordinated rotation of the CaF6 octahedra. We find that, as the lattice contracts, the quasiharmonic frequency of the R-point vibrations becomes imaginary at approximately 1280 K: Below this temperature the static lattice energy, as a function of CaF6 rotation, has a …

Low Pressure Membrane Separation Process To Remove Heavy Metal Complexes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Chin-Shun Cheng Sep 1981

Low Pressure Membrane Separation Process To Remove Heavy Metal Complexes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Chin-Shun Cheng

KWRRI Research Reports

The overall objective of this investigation is to establish the rejection behavior of heavy metals in the presence of complexing agents, utilizing negatively charged ultrafiltration membranes. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted with Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Cu1+ in the presence of cyanide, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, and oxalates, under insignificant concentration polarization condition. The rejection dependence of the heavy metals is found to be a function of feed metal concentration, metal types, complexing agent to metal feed molar ratio, pH and ionic strength. The dependence of rejection behavior of heavy metals and complexing …

Time-Dependent Direct Correlation Function, John D. Ramshaw Sep 1981

Time-Dependent Direct Correlation Function, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A time-dependent direct correlation function (TDDCF) is defined and discussed. The definition (which differs from that proposed by Percus and Yevick) is motivated by linear response theory. The TDDCF consequently has a functional-derivative or stimulus-response interpretation closely analogous to that of the static direct correlation function. Mean-field considerations suggest that the TDDCF separates into a term which is simply related to the pair potential and a spatially shorter-ranged remainder. This behavior is confirmed in the Vlasov-Zwanzig approximation.
