Geology Of Lake Mcconaughy Area, Keith County, Nebraska, Roger K. Pabian, Robert F. Diffendal Jr., Frankie Gould

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Rocks cropping out along the North Platte River valley at Lake McConaughy provide a glimpse into Nebraska's geologic past. Here are excellent exposures of the Ogallala Group, which consists of continental sedimentary rocks deposited during the Miocene epoch of the Tertiary period of geologic time. This group of rocks extends throughout much of Nebraska (see geologic bedrock map on outside back cover) but is overlain in most places by younger stream and wind deposits of Pliocene(?) and Pleistocene age. Easily accessible, the Ogallala outcrops contain locally abundant fossils of seeds, casts of pedotubules, and occasional fossils of vertebrate animals such …

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman Sep 1981

Long-Time Behavior Of Ginzburg-Landau Systems Far From Equilibrium, Evangelos A. Coutsias, B. A. Huberman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Using singular-perturbation techniques, we study the stability of modulated structures generated by driving Ginzburg-Landau systems far from equilibrium. We show that, far from equilibrium, the steady-state behavior is controlled by an effective Lagrangian which possesses the same functional form as the original free energy but with renormalized coefficients. We study both linear and nonlinear sources and determine their influence on the long-term stability of the bifurcating solutions.

Report To The Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission Commonwealth Of Virginia Concerning The Inventory Of Sand Supplies In The Southern Chesapeake Bay, Robert J. Byrne, Carl H. Hobbs Iii, Robert A. Gammish

Reports

In its report to the Governor and the General Assembly of Virginia (Senate Document No. 4, Commonwealth of Virginia, 1979), the Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission found that "there is a need to locate sources of sand supplies for rebuilding public beaches. Certain bottom areas in the lower Chesapeake Bay should be studied as possible sources of sand supply for public beaches." And toward that end, the Commission recommended that "The School of Marine Science, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, study and analyze possible sources of sand supply in the lower Chesapeake Bay and vicinity for …

A Test Of Macroevolutionary Problems With Neontological Data, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman Sep 1981

A Test Of Macroevolutionary Problems With Neontological Data, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Ricklefs (1980) suggested the use of neontological data to distinguish between puncuated equilibrium and gradualism as modes of evolution. This paper investigates his model and finds it contains oversimplifications that make any test difficult. We modify his model slightly and use it as a limited test of punctuated equilibrium by large morphological shifts at speciation. This test is applied to a data set of 110 species from two families of bats, the Emballonuridae and the Molossidae. We find no evidence of consistently large morphological shifts at the formation of subspecies, species or genera.

Classification And Ranking Of Selectd Arkansas Lakes, Robert E. Babcock, Eugene H. Schmitz, Thomas Buchanan, Richard L. Meyer, James I. Meinecke, David B. Czarnecki

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Trophic-state related problems associated with waters in the United States have generated tremendous public interest and concern, particularly during the past decade. These interests and concerns led to Public Law 92-500, the mandate by Congress known as the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. Various sections of PL 92-500 directly address the need for trophic-state analyses, particularly Section 314 referred to as the Clean Lakes Program which assigns states the responsibility for classifying their lakes according to water quality, identifying methods of pollution control and restoring those lakes which have become degraded.

Application Of A New Method For Quantitative Evaluation Of Stream Benthic Algal Populations, Richard L. Meyer, Neil Woomer Sep 1981

Application Of A New Method For Quantitative Evaluation Of Stream Benthic Algal Populations, Richard L. Meyer, Neil Woomer

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The response of stream biota to changing water quality or other ecosystem perturbations is an important means of assessing water quality. The dynamic nature of streams induces significant sampling and measurement problems. In smaller streams a true algal plankton subcommunity is lacking and the major location for the production of algae is attachment onto stones and other stable surfaces at the substrate-water interface. Several artificial techniques have been developed to analyze the composition of a portion of the epiphytic periphyton (algae attached to stones) but not populations which are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to natural substrates. A newly developed substrate …

A Faunal Analysis Of The Springs Of The Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, Henry W. Robison Sep 1981

A Faunal Analysis Of The Springs Of The Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas, Henry W. Robison

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Spring ecosystems in Arkansas have historically received little attention. A faunal survey was made of 33 springs located in the core area Ouachita Mountains physiographic province. The study area was 135 x 80 km extending west from Hot Springs, Arkansas to the Oklahoma line. Springs in the Ouachita Mountain physiographic province were characterized as generally faunistically poor with often a single species such as the isopod, Lirceus h. hoppinae, being the dominant faunal element both numerically and with regard to biomass. A total of 40 species of invertebrate species and eight vertebrate species were collected from the spring environs during …

Estimating Water Demand Schedules For Selected Industries In Arkansas, Joseph A. Ziegler, Stephen E. Bell Sep 1981

Estimating Water Demand Schedules For Selected Industries In Arkansas, Joseph A. Ziegler, Stephen E. Bell

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Water demand functions for the paper and chemical industries in the state of Arkansas were estimated utilizing data collected from individual plants throughout the state. Regression analysis was used to estimate demand functions from a data base which included information on intake and gross water use by source, recirculated water use, costs of acquiring, treating, and discharging water, plant output, employment, and level of technology. The demand for intake water was estimated as an exponential function of average water costs and the level of technology primarily. Price elasticities of demand were estimated as approximately equal to one for both industries. …

Existence And Monotone Method For Periodic Solutions Of First Order Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham Sep 1981

Existence And Monotone Method For Periodic Solutions Of First Order Differential Equations, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

An attempt was made recently in [3] to combine fruitfully the two basic techniques, namely the method of upper and lower solutions and the Lyapunov-Schmitt method to investigate the existence of periodic solutions of second order nonlinear boundary value problems. in this paper, we utilize this fruitful approach to study existence of periodic solutions of first order nonlinear differential equations. We also develope monotone iterative technique for obtaining multiple periodic solutions which are obtained as limits of monotone sequences. Since each member of these sequences is a periodic solution of a linear differential equation of first order which can explicitly …

Characteristics Of Water Vapor Tracked Winds, Frederick R. Mosher Aug 1981

Characteristics Of Water Vapor Tracked Winds, Frederick R. Mosher

Publications

Wind measurements were obtained by tracking water vapor features on Meteosat and GOES-VAS 6.7 micron water vapor images. While pure water vapor features are fuzzy, there are discernible features which can be tracked. An investigation of preprocessing algorithms designed to bring out the features to be tracked showed that high pass filters tended to bring out the noise in the image, while low pass filters washed out the features. Sliced linear gray scale stretching under operator control gave the best enhancement to the water vapor features.

The Creation Of Holograms Utilizing Fiber Optics, Abdul Rahim Omar Aug 1981

The Creation Of Holograms Utilizing Fiber Optics, Abdul Rahim Omar

Masters Theses

Holography involves the interference of two light beams, namely a reference beam and an object beam. Instead of the conventional method using beam splitters and mirrors to direct the light path, fiber optic bundles are used and high quality holograms have been produced. When fiber optic bundles are used, a spatial filter is not needed to produce a "clean" beam of light for the reference beam. Fiber optic bundles also provide greater flexibility of illumination for the object beam and/or fir the reference beam. Also, it is easier to illuminate the object from many directions. Finally, the distance from the …

The Water Monomer On The Prism Face Of Ice And Above A Four Layer Ice Basal Face Ledge: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer, Carolyn A. Ward Aug 1981

The Water Monomer On The Prism Face Of Ice And Above A Four Layer Ice Basal Face Ledge: An Effective Pair Potential Model, Barbara N. Hale, Jerry Kiefer, Carolyn A. Ward

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A previous study of the water monomer on the basal faces of ice is extended to consider the interaction of the water molecule with a rigid prism face of ice and with an ice basal face ledge. The effective central force H2O-H2O potentials of Stillinger and Rahman are used to generate maximal binding energy surfaces for the H2O adsorbed on the sample substrates. The results indicate that the prism face of ice binds the water molecule more strongly than the basal faces, and the step on the basal face serves to expose high binding …

A Study Of The Films Produced By The Aluminum/Water Reaction Using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy, Reed L. Shilts Aug 1981

A Study Of The Films Produced By The Aluminum/Water Reaction Using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy, Reed L. Shilts

Masters Theses

This work compares the action of pure water to various aqueous electrolytes on aluminum surface film formation at about 100°C. The electrolytes were pure water with various inhibitor ions added. The ions were nitrate, tungstate, borate, molybdate, silicate, phosphate, a mixture of nitrate and molybdate, and a mixture of silicate and molybdate. The investigative technique was Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) using 2 MeV alpha particles with an annular detector set at 180 degrees for maximum elemental resolution. RBS was chosen for this investigation because it offers in an easily interpretable manner a relatively fast and semi-quantitative method of analysis of …

Detector Geometry For Cascade Photon Experiments, Roger Minoru Munechika Aug 1981

Detector Geometry For Cascade Photon Experiments, Roger Minoru Munechika

Masters Theses

An observation of cascading optical photons can be used to determine an absolute excitation cross section for the intermediate state without the need of standard lamp calibration. In order to reduce the data an angular correlation function and an angular distribution function must be known. These functions depend on the alignment of the upper excited state and the polarization of the light emitted in the lower part of the cascade. However, at certain angles of observation the values of the required functions are known regardless of the alignment or polarization. A computer search is done to find these angles for …

A Geochemical Study Of The Sudbury Breccia, Kevin M. Prochaska Aug 1981

A Geochemical Study Of The Sudbury Breccia, Kevin M. Prochaska

Masters Theses

The origin of the Sudbury Breccia surrounding the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, Canada has long been debated. The breccia has been described both as an igneous injection and as an abraded country rock formed by attrition in place.

A geochemical analysis of selected elements in matrix and clast samples from the breccia revealed distinct differences between the two sample groups. Matrix samples were lower in silicon and higher in heavy elements than the clasts. Matrix and clasts were comparable in light elements.

The results of the analysis favor an igneous process. Petrographic observations and structural evidence support this idea. The …

The Petrology And Geochemistry Of Keweenawan Diabase Dikes In Ontonagon, Gogebic, Iron And Dickinson Counties, Michigan, James J. Hahnenberg Aug 1981

The Petrology And Geochemistry Of Keweenawan Diabase Dikes In Ontonagon, Gogebic, Iron And Dickinson Counties, Michigan, James J. Hahnenberg

Masters Theses

Petrographic and chemical studies of Keeweenawan-age diabase dikes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula show two major groupings, Porcupine Mountain dikes and Lower Keweenawan dikes consist of two major rock types, fine-grained smaller dikes and the coarse-grained central portions of larger dikes. Major minerals are subophitic plagioclase and pyroxene. The rocks, as compared to the "average" basalts, are low in Al203, high in Ti02, K20, P205 and contain moderate amounts of Fe0t. They are classified as quartz tholeiites. Several parental magma sources that would account for these and other …

The Hydrologic Factors That Control Carbonate Hardness In Kalamazoo County Lakes, Southwestern Michigan, Linda Brittain Fenner Aug 1981

The Hydrologic Factors That Control Carbonate Hardness In Kalamazoo County Lakes, Southwestern Michigan, Linda Brittain Fenner

Masters Theses

The range and distribution of carbonate hardness in Kalamazoo County lakes were determined and hydrologic factors thought to control hardness were evaluated. Surface-water samples were collected from thirty- five randomly selected lakes in October, 1980. Carbonate hardness ranged from 16 to 244 mg/1 with 61 percent above 120 mg/1. Ten hydrologic variables were analyzed with respect to lake hardness. Lakes with a surface-water inlet were a ll hard (greater than 180 mg/1) and lakes at least two meters higher than the approximate ground-water table were all relatively soft (less than 100 mg/1). No direct correlations were found between the other …

Dolomitization Of The Brassfield Formation (Lower Silurian) In Adams County, Ohio, Lisa L. Varga Aug 1981

Dolomitization Of The Brassfield Formation (Lower Silurian) In Adams County, Ohio, Lisa L. Varga

Masters Theses

The Lower Silurian Brassfield Formation which outcrops in the Tri-state area of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky is a transgressive sequence consisting of a series of interbedded shales, limestones and dolostones. Evidence from depositional environments, petrography and spatial relationships of dolomitized and undolomitized rock suggests dolomitization in southwestern Ohio was a two-stage process. Initial dolomitization was restricted to the basal Belfast Member and probably occurred penecontemporaneously on small supratidal islands in a manner analagous to that which occurs in the modern sabkha environment of the Persian Gulf. Regional dolomitization was a later diagenetic event related to the formation of a fresh-seawater …
