U-Pb Studies Of Zircon Cores And Overgrowths, And Monazite: Implications For Age And Petrogenesis Of The Northeastern Idaho Batholith, M. E. Bickford, R. B. Chase, B. K. Nelson, Robert Duncan Shuster, E. C. Arruda
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
U/Pb isotopic studies of zircons, many containing xenocrystic cores with euhedral overgrowths, and monazite from igneous rocks and metasedimentary inclusions of the northeastern Idaho batholith yield linear arrays on concordia diagrams. We interpret these as mixing lines between an old component (cores) and a young component (overgrowths and zircons without cores). The lower intercept of such arrays with concordia may yield the minimum age of the rocks if the overgrowths and zircons without cores are discordant, or the crystallization age if they are concordant. Monazites yield apparently concordant ages either equal or less than the lower intercept zircon ages. The …

Photoionization Of The 4D10 Subshell Of Cadmium: Photoelectron Angular Distributions And Polarization Of Fluorescence Radiation, Constantine E. Theodosiou, Anthony F. Starace, B.R. Tambe, Steven T. Manson
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Relativistic Dirac-Fock calculations are presented for the photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameter β corresponding to 4d-subshell photoionization in Cd and for the linear polarization PL of the subsequent fluorescence radiation, for photon energies less than 185 eV. Near threshold, our results for β lie lower than previous relativistic Dirac-Slater and nonrelativistic many-body-perturbation-theory (MBPT) calculations. The agreement with very recent measurements by Heinzmann and Schönhense is very good. Our calculations show that PL (2D5/2→2P3/2)=-0.059 and -0.058 at incident photon energies hν=40.2 and 45.6 eV, respectively. These results lie …

Meteorological Significance Of Cloud Tracked Winds During Dst-5 And Dst-6, H. M. Goodman, Frederick Mosher, Tod Stewart, Verner Suomi
Publications
A study has been conducted to determine the meteorological significance of satellite derived cloud drift winds using data from the Data Systems Test (DST). Three synoptic weather events were chosen during DST-6 (January 5-March 5) for weather analysis and comparison. The three events each contained a prominent weather feature over the north Pacific Ocean. Two satellite sources (NESS and the University of Wisconsin), radiosonde and commercial aircraft reports combined to produce a wind set covering the target area.
Exactly Soluble Ising Models On Hierarchical Lattices, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths
Exactly Soluble Ising Models On Hierarchical Lattices, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths
Miron Kaufman
Certain approximate renormalization-group recursion relations are exact for Ising models on special hierarchical lattices, as noted by Berker and Ostlund. These lattice models provide numerous examples of phase coexistence and critical points at finite temperatures, including cases of continuously varying critical exponents and phase transitions without phase coexistence. The lattices are, typically, quite inhomogeneous and may possess several inequivalent limits as infinite lattices.

Reactions Of (3-(Dimethylamino)-2-Azaprop-2-En-1-Ylidene) Dimethylammonium Chloride (Gold's Reagent) With Carboxylic Acid Derivatives And Grignard Reagents, Dale E. Polk
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
An azavinamidium salt, [3-(Dimethylamino)-2-azaprop-2-en-l-ylidene] dimethylammonium chloride was reacted with primary amides, esters containing an ╬▒-methylene group and Grignard reagents. The reaction of this azavinamidium salt with amides and esters produced respectively, acyl amidines and enamino esters. Both of these products were produced in high yields by using relatively mild conditions. Reaction of the salt with Grignard reagents resulted in a novel synthesis of aldehydes. This aldehyde synthesis was shown to be of general utility and to proceed in high yields.
The Status Of Sulfur Fertilization Of Crops In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock
The Status Of Sulfur Fertilization Of Crops In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock
Soil Science News and Views
Sulfur has long been recognized as being essential for the growth of plants and animals due to it being necessary for production of several amino acids. Although regarded as a "secondary" element, it is required by plants in fairly high amounts, very similar to that of phosphorus. Sulfur deficiency symptoms in plants are somewhat similar to those of nitrogen since an overall uniform pale-green leaf color develops. Sulfur deficiencies are often found in crops growing on sandy soils with low organic matter content.

Review Of Bartlett, Great Surveys Of The American West, And Schubert, Vanguard Of Expansion: Army Engineers In The Trans-Mississippi West, 1819-1879, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
These two books outline the fascinating history of the exploration of the western United States by United States Army topographers and by civilian natural scientists from 1819 to 1879. These two groups, working either together under Army supervision or separately in military and civilian independent surveys, prepared topographic and geologic maps and natural history studies of most of the territory west of the Mississippi River. These maps and studies provided valuable information to settlers and to commercial and government groups involved in opening the west to development, and dispelled many myths concerning previously unexplored regions. They also helped lead to …

European Community Seaport Policy: Competition Or Cooperation, Michael J. Giari
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The objective of this paper is to examine the development of Community port policy and analyze how and why certain factors have impeded progress in this sector of the EC. This paper will test the hypothesis that there are major economic, technological and political forces, outside of the EC, which are moving Community ports towards regional cooperation. Further European integration in a variety of fields, including ports and maritime transportation is not only desirable but inevitable. A new port-related organization to promote and direct this cooperative port effort will be proposed. Geographically this paper will focus on the North Sea …

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan
Publications (WR)
The interstitial water chemistry of the sediments of Las Vegas Bay and Bonelli Bay in Lake Mead has been studied as part of a comprehensive water quality study of those locations. Pore water and solid phase analyses were completed from four stations in Las Vegas Bay and two stations in Bonelli Bay. At both locations the pore water compositions and organic matter diagenesis in the sediments are dominated by sulfate reduction. This major role of sulfate reduction is unusual for lake sediments and reflects the fact that SO4 is the major anion in the lake water. In addition, gypsum …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The characterization of Co(urea)2Cl2·2H2O is reported. The crystal structure at ambient temperatures yields the following information: the chlorine, water, and urea group are coordinated, the urea being bound via the oxygen, to form an octahedral environment about the metal atom. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the coordinated chlorine and water ligands produce parallel infinite sheets which provide a two-dimensional exchange pathway. The sheets are separated by the urea ligands and may be considered as magnetically isolated from one another. Crystal data: space group P21/c, Z = 2, α = 7.397 (3) Å, b …
A New Computer Approach To Atomic And Molecular Dynamics With Application To The Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan
A New Computer Approach To Atomic And Molecular Dynamics With Application To The Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers
A new computer oriented theory for atomic and molecular dynamics is developed. In it are incorporated modifications of classical ideas which are motivated by modern particle theory, especially as it relates to the structure of the electron and to the existence of fractional charge. Computer results of a dynamical water molecule model, which are consistent with the bond angle and bond length vibrations of H2O, are described and discussed.
Alluvial Fan Deposits Of The Todos Santos Formation Of Central Chiapas, Mexico, Terence Cletus Blair
Alluvial Fan Deposits Of The Todos Santos Formation Of Central Chiapas, Mexico, Terence Cletus Blair
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses
The Todos Santos Formation at Jerico was deposited as an alluvial fan system by high gradient, short duration ephemeral streams which transported gravel, sand, and mud northeastward through a feeder canyon which opened out onto an alluvial plain. This alluvial fan system is composed of streamflood, debris flow, and braided stream deposits. Three distinct alluvial fan environments were distinguished at Jerico: proximal fan facies, mid-fan facies, and distal fan facies. Analysis of the vertical succession of these depositional facies reveals two proximal to distal alluvial fan transitions separated by a distal to proximal transition. This suggests that a period of …

A Hydrologic Carbonate Chemistry Model Of Flooded Rice Fields, James A. Ferguson, John T. Gilmour
A Hydrologic Carbonate Chemistry Model Of Flooded Rice Fields, James A. Ferguson, John T. Gilmour
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Many flooded rice fields in Arkansas are irrigated with subterranean waters saturated or supersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate. Deposition of calcium carbonate from these waters largely occurs near field inlets and in flow areas (1). When sufficient amounts of calcium carbonate accumulate, soil pH rises and zinc deficiency occurs in rice seedlings grown on the affected soil (2). The use of zinc fertilizers has provided a short-term solution to the problem (3), but does not provide a water management alternative which would slow, stop or reverse the localized accumulation of calcium carbonate and concomitant soil pH increase.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A silica gel-petroleum (SGP) medium was developed which is reliable, approximately the same cost as that of the corresponding agar-based petroleum medium, and can be made sufficiently firm to use in streaking or the spread-plate technique. Advantages of the medium include: the incorporation of all of the major ions of seawater in accordance with Dittmar's Law (the salinity of which can easily be varied from 0 to 35 parts per thousand); a wide workable pH range (5.5 to 11.6); negligable pH drift(~ 0.2 pH units after 166 days); the elimination of all but negligable amounts of syneresis, the ability to …
The Port Of Baltimore-Containers And Railroads: A Necessary Interaction, Thomas Sweeny
The Port Of Baltimore-Containers And Railroads: A Necessary Interaction, Thomas Sweeny
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper came about as a synthesis of interests in ships, railroads and history. Perhaps no other port on the East Coast has such a strong blend of these three forces as the Port of Baltimore. This paper is about the interaction of railroads and the port and how this interaction continues to play a major role in the Port of Baltimore's development. The original hypothesis assumed that Baltimore's strong history with the railroads made her a railroad port. But hard times and competitive truck rates have driven the railroads out of Baltimore to such an extent that rail service …

Magnetotactic Bacteria At The Geomagnetic Equator, Richard B. Frankel, R. P. Blakemore, F. F. Torres De Araujo, D. M. S. Esquivel, J. Danon
Physics
Magnetotactic bacteria are present in fresh water and marine sediments of Fortaleza, Brazil, situated close to the geomagnetic equator. Both South-seeking and North-seeking bacteria are present in roughly equal numbers in the same samples. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that the vertical component of the geomagnetic field selects the predominant polarity type among magnetotactic bacteria in natural environments.
