Land Degradation In The Fitzroy Valley Of Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia. Rangeland Management Branch Aug 1981

Land Degradation In The Fitzroy Valley Of Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia. Rangeland Management Branch

Resource management technical reports

The report reassesses the condition of formerly valuable grazing lands of the Fitzroy River valley frontage lands. It is hoped that the submission will promote discussion on the problems of degenerated pastoral land and increase the resolve of all concerned to take the necessary action for their restoration. The frontage lands flank the major rivers of the area, the Fitzroy, the Margaret and the Meda and their tributaries. The frontage is capable of supporting the best pastures in the Kimberley, but unwise and uncontrolled stocking has profoundly degraded and eroded the most productive parts. There are about 5,800 square kilometres …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The 55 Mph Speed Limit, David L. Farnsworth, Kenneth Mathis, Janet Herbert Aug 1981

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The 55 Mph Speed Limit, David L. Farnsworth, Kenneth Mathis, Janet Herbert

Articles

In January 1974 the speed limit on the New York State Thruway was set at 55 mph for all vehicles. This paper examines the effect of that action on Thruway fatality rates. The exact number of total miles driven is known for this toil road. Hence, death rates are based upon precise information. Since seven years have elapsed during the post-treatment period, 1974-1980, longer trends can be investigated. The death rate is modeled and intervention analysis performed. Using a variety of forecasting techniques, the pre-treatment fatality rates are used to project rates through the post-treatment period. In this way, the …

Water Quality Considerations In The Slurry Pipelining Of Coal, James W. Moore Aug 1981

Water Quality Considerations In The Slurry Pipelining Of Coal, James W. Moore

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Interest in the use of slurry pipelines for the movement of large volumes of coal over long distances has increased rapidly during the last decade. In the early 1970's, this interest involved the movement of Western coals to markets in the southwestern and western United States. In recent years, however, interest in the use of slurry pipelines for transporting Eastern coal developed. Very little information was available concerning the water quality aspects of the slurry pipelining of Eastern coal. The research program was developed to commence building the data base in this regard. Extensive water quality investigations were conducted using …

The Role Of Metals In Carcinogenesis: Biochemistry And Metabolism, K Wetterhahn Jennette Aug 1981

The Role Of Metals In Carcinogenesis: Biochemistry And Metabolism, K Wetterhahn Jennette

Dartmouth Scholarship

The oxyanions of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium are stable forms of these elements in high oxidation states which cross cell membranes using the normal phosphate and/or sulfate transport systems of the cell. Once inside the cell, these oxyanions may sulfuryl transfer reactions. Often the oxyanions serve as alternate enzyme substrates but form ester products which are hydrolytically unstable compared with the sulfate and phosphate esters and, therefore, decompose readily in aqueous solution. Arsenite and selenite are capable of reacting with sulfhydryl groups in proteins. Some cells are able to metabolize redox active oxyanions to forms of the elements …

Error Estimates Of Solutions And Mean Of Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Systems, M. Sambandham, G. S. Ladde Aug 1981

Error Estimates Of Solutions And Mean Of Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Systems, M. Sambandham, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers

Stochastic differential equations are considered. Estimates in terms of statistical properties are given for the difference between the solutions and solutions of the mean of stochastic differential systems. For this purpose necessary theorems are developed and sufficient conditions are given to obtain error estimates. A few examples are worked out to demonstrate the usefulness of the results.

The Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia On The Membrane Lipids, 3-0-[¹⁴C] Methylglucose Transport, And 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate Levels In Rat Erythrocytes, Edwin J. Lester Jr. Aug 1981

The Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia On The Membrane Lipids, 3-0-[¹⁴C] Methylglucose Transport, And 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate Levels In Rat Erythrocytes, Edwin J. Lester Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An increase in dietary cholesterol and cholic acid will produce hypercholesterolemia in rats. For ten months, two groups of rats (six in each group) were fed commercial rat pellets (control group) or rat pellets plus cholesterol (1%) and cholic acid (0.25%) (experimental group). A blood sample from each animal was divided into three aliquots for three separate experiments on the erythrocytes: a membrane cholesterol and phospholipid determination, a 3-0-[14C] methylglucose (30MG) transport determination, and a 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG) determination. The 30MG transport and 2,3 DPG aliquots were each incubated in the same five concentrations of 30MG and glucose …

Comment On Particle Mixing And Delta-I= 3/2 Terms In Non-Leptonic Weak Decays, Br Holstein Jul 1981

Comment On Particle Mixing And Delta-I= 3/2 Terms In Non-Leptonic Weak Decays, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

A recent paper by Gusbin concludes that ΔI=3/2 terms in K→πη can substantially modify particle-mixing contributions to K+→π+π0. Using techniques which can successfully reproduce the experimental features of the K→ππ decays, we argue that this seems unlikely.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling In 1-Μm Nb Josephson Junctions, Richard F. Voss, Richard A. Webb Jul 1981

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling In 1-Μm Nb Josephson Junctions, Richard F. Voss, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

The probability distributions for switching out of the superconducting state of low-cur-rent-density 1-μm Nb Josephson junctions with capacitance ≈ 0.1 pF have been measured as a function of temperature T down to 3 mK. Below 100 mK the distribution widths become independent of T. The results are in excellent agreement with predictions for the quantum tunneling of the (macroscopic) junction phase that include the reduction of tunneling rates due to dissipation.

Various causes for variability in decay resistance were examined.

U-Pb Studies Of Zircon Cores And Overgrowths, And Monazite: Implications For Age And Petrogenesis Of The Northeastern Idaho Batholith, M. E. Bickford, R. B. Chase, B. K. Nelson, Robert Duncan Shuster, E. C. Arruda Jul 1981

U-Pb Studies Of Zircon Cores And Overgrowths, And Monazite: Implications For Age And Petrogenesis Of The Northeastern Idaho Batholith, M. E. Bickford, R. B. Chase, B. K. Nelson, Robert Duncan Shuster, E. C. Arruda

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

U/Pb isotopic studies of zircons, many containing xenocrystic cores with euhedral overgrowths, and monazite from igneous rocks and metasedimentary inclusions of the northeastern Idaho batholith yield linear arrays on concordia diagrams. We interpret these as mixing lines between an old component (cores) and a young component (overgrowths and zircons without cores). The lower intercept of such arrays with concordia may yield the minimum age of the rocks if the overgrowths and zircons without cores are discordant, or the crystallization age if they are concordant. Monazites yield apparently concordant ages either equal or less than the lower intercept zircon ages. The …

Photoionization Of The 4D10 Subshell Of Cadmium: Photoelectron Angular Distributions And Polarization Of Fluorescence Radiation, Constantine E. Theodosiou, Anthony F. Starace, B.R. Tambe, Steven T. Manson Jul 1981

Photoionization Of The 4D10 Subshell Of Cadmium: Photoelectron Angular Distributions And Polarization Of Fluorescence Radiation, Constantine E. Theodosiou, Anthony F. Starace, B.R. Tambe, Steven T. Manson

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Relativistic Dirac-Fock calculations are presented for the photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameter β corresponding to 4d-subshell photoionization in Cd and for the linear polarization PL of the subsequent fluorescence radiation, for photon energies less than 185 eV. Near threshold, our results for β lie lower than previous relativistic Dirac-Slater and nonrelativistic many-body-perturbation-theory (MBPT) calculations. The agreement with very recent measurements by Heinzmann and Schönhense is very good. Our calculations show that PL (2D5/22P3/2)=-0.059 and -0.058 at incident photon energies hν=40.2 and 45.6 eV, respectively. These results lie …

Meteorological Significance Of Cloud Tracked Winds During Dst-5 And Dst-6, H. M. Goodman, Frederick Mosher, Tod Stewart, Verner Suomi Jul 1981

Meteorological Significance Of Cloud Tracked Winds During Dst-5 And Dst-6, H. M. Goodman, Frederick Mosher, Tod Stewart, Verner Suomi

Publications

A study has been conducted to determine the meteorological significance of satellite derived cloud drift winds using data from the Data Systems Test (DST). Three synoptic weather events were chosen during DST-6 (January 5-March 5) for weather analysis and comparison. The three events each contained a prominent weather feature over the north Pacific Ocean. Two satellite sources (NESS and the University of Wisconsin), radiosonde and commercial aircraft reports combined to produce a wind set covering the target area.

Exactly Soluble Ising Models On Hierarchical Lattices, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths Jul 1981

Exactly Soluble Ising Models On Hierarchical Lattices, Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths

Miron Kaufman

Certain approximate renormalization-group recursion relations are exact for Ising models on special hierarchical lattices, as noted by Berker and Ostlund. These lattice models provide numerous examples of phase coexistence and critical points at finite temperatures, including cases of continuously varying critical exponents and phase transitions without phase coexistence. The lattices are, typically, quite inhomogeneous and may possess several inequivalent limits as infinite lattices.

Reactions Of (3-(Dimethylamino)-2-Azaprop-2-En-1-Ylidene) Dimethylammonium Chloride (Gold's Reagent) With Carboxylic Acid Derivatives And Grignard Reagents, Dale E. Polk Jul 1981

Reactions Of (3-(Dimethylamino)-2-Azaprop-2-En-1-Ylidene) Dimethylammonium Chloride (Gold's Reagent) With Carboxylic Acid Derivatives And Grignard Reagents, Dale E. Polk

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An azavinamidium salt, [3-(Dimethylamino)-2-azaprop-2-en-l-ylidene] dimethylammonium chloride was reacted with primary amides, esters containing an ╬▒-methylene group and Grignard reagents. The reaction of this azavinamidium salt with amides and esters produced respectively, acyl amidines and enamino esters. Both of these products were produced in high yields by using relatively mild conditions. Reaction of the salt with Grignard reagents resulted in a novel synthesis of aldehydes. This aldehyde synthesis was shown to be of general utility and to proceed in high yields.

The Status Of Sulfur Fertilization Of Crops In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock Jul 1981

The Status Of Sulfur Fertilization Of Crops In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock

Soil Science News and Views

Sulfur has long been recognized as being essential for the growth of plants and animals due to it being necessary for production of several amino acids. Although regarded as a "secondary" element, it is required by plants in fairly high amounts, very similar to that of phosphorus. Sulfur deficiency symptoms in plants are somewhat similar to those of nitrogen since an overall uniform pale-green leaf color develops. Sulfur deficiencies are often found in crops growing on sandy soils with low organic matter content.

Review Of Bartlett, Great Surveys Of The American West, And Schubert, Vanguard Of Expansion: Army Engineers In The Trans-Mississippi West, 1819-1879, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jul 1981

Review Of Bartlett, Great Surveys Of The American West, And Schubert, Vanguard Of Expansion: Army Engineers In The Trans-Mississippi West, 1819-1879, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

These two books outline the fascinating history of the exploration of the western United States by United States Army topographers and by civilian natural scientists from 1819 to 1879. These two groups, working either together under Army supervision or separately in military and civilian independent surveys, prepared topographic and geologic maps and natural history studies of most of the territory west of the Mississippi River. These maps and studies provided valuable information to settlers and to commercial and government groups involved in opening the west to development, and dispelled many myths concerning previously unexplored regions. They also helped lead to …

European Community Seaport Policy: Competition Or Cooperation, Michael J. Giari

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The objective of this paper is to examine the development of Community port policy and analyze how and why certain factors have impeded progress in this sector of the EC. This paper will test the hypothesis that there are major economic, technological and political forces, outside of the EC, which are moving Community ports towards regional cooperation. Further European integration in a variety of fields, including ports and maritime transportation is not only desirable but inevitable. A new port-related organization to promote and direct this cooperative port effort will be proposed. Geographically this paper will focus on the North Sea …

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan Jul 1981

Diagenesis Of Organic Matter In Las Vegas Bay And Bonelli Bay, Lake Mead, James W. Murray, Carolyn J. Jones, Kathy Kuivila, Jeff Sawlan

Publications (WR)

The interstitial water chemistry of the sediments of Las Vegas Bay and Bonelli Bay in Lake Mead has been studied as part of a comprehensive water quality study of those locations. Pore water and solid phase analyses were completed from four stations in Las Vegas Bay and two stations in Bonelli Bay. At both locations the pore water compositions and organic matter diagenesis in the sediments are dominated by sulfate reduction. This major role of sulfate reduction is unusual for lake sediments and reflects the fact that SO4 is the major anion in the lake water. In addition, gypsum …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The characterization of Co(urea)2Cl2·2H2O is reported. The crystal structure at ambient temperatures yields the following information: the chlorine, water, and urea group are coordinated, the urea being bound via the oxygen, to form an octahedral environment about the metal atom. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the coordinated chlorine and water ligands produce parallel infinite sheets which provide a two-dimensional exchange pathway. The sheets are separated by the urea ligands and may be considered as magnetically isolated from one another. Crystal data: space group P21/c, Z = 2, α = 7.397 (3) Å, b …

A New Computer Approach To Atomic And Molecular Dynamics With Application To The Water Molecule, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

A new computer oriented theory for atomic and molecular dynamics is developed. In it are incorporated modifications of classical ideas which are motivated by modern particle theory, especially as it relates to the structure of the electron and to the existence of fractional charge. Computer results of a dynamical water molecule model, which are consistent with the bond angle and bond length vibrations of H2O, are described and discussed.

Alluvial Fan Deposits Of The Todos Santos Formation Of Central Chiapas, Mexico, Terence Cletus Blair Jul 1981

Alluvial Fan Deposits Of The Todos Santos Formation Of Central Chiapas, Mexico, Terence Cletus Blair

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The Todos Santos Formation at Jerico was deposited as an alluvial fan system by high gradient, short duration ephemeral streams which transported gravel, sand, and mud northeastward through a feeder canyon which opened out onto an alluvial plain. This alluvial fan system is composed of streamflood, debris flow, and braided stream deposits. Three distinct alluvial fan environments were distinguished at Jerico: proximal fan facies, mid-fan facies, and distal fan facies. Analysis of the vertical succession of these depositional facies reveals two proximal to distal alluvial fan transitions separated by a distal to proximal transition. This suggests that a period of …
