Three-Component Model And Tricritical Points: A Renormalization-Group Study., Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths, Julia M. Yeomans, Michael E. Fisher
Miron Kaufman
The global phase diagram for a three-component lattice gas or spin-one Ising model with general single-site and nearest-neighbor "ferromagnetic" interactions is worked out for twodimensional lattices using a Migdal-Kadanoff recursion relation. It differs in important qualitative respects from the corresponding mean-field phase diagram. The set of fixed points and flows provides the characteristic'phase diagrams of the three-state Potts multicritical point and the ordinary (n =1) tricritical point in a complete set of symmetry-breaking fields. The latter is associated, in this renormalization-group scheme, with seven distinct critical fixed points, a number which is surprisingly large.

Mouthpart Morphology And Feeding Strategies Of The Commensal Amphipod, Anamixis Hanseni Stebbing, James Darwin Thomas, George W. Taylor
Mouthpart Morphology And Feeding Strategies Of The Commensal Amphipod, Anamixis Hanseni Stebbing, James Darwin Thomas, George W. Taylor
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The lack of the information on the biology of the commensal amphipod family Anamixidae prompted investigations into mouthpart ultrastructure, feeding biology, and host specificity of Anamixis hanseni Stebbing, 1897. Earlier investigators presented conflicting reports on the structural composition of the buccal region and feeding modes in anamixids. Scanning electron microscope analysis of A. hanseni showed a complete set of mouthparts to be present, although much modified and reduced, except for the well-developed maxilliped palps. Feeding is not parasitic (piercing and sucking host tissue) as previously believed but is accomplished while A. hanseni rests inside its host. Minute food particles are …

Rare-Earth-Rich Metallic Glasses. Ii. Magnetic Viscosity, George C. Hadjipanayis, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
Magnetic viscosity measurements on amorphous Tb75Au25 and (Er65Fe35)90B10 alloys are presented in the temperature range of 1.3 to 30 K. The magnetization in a steady magnetic field is found to follow a logarithmic time dependence for times up to 400 s suggesting a spectrum of activation energies. The magnetic viscosity parameters were used to investigate the temperature dependence of the observed large coercive fields and to study intrinsic temperature and thermal activation effects. It is found that the large change of the coercive field at very low temperatures is mainly …
Molecular Effects In Beam-Foil Collision-Induced Alignment Of He I, Timothy J. Gay, H. G. Berry, R. Deserio
Molecular Effects In Beam-Foil Collision-Induced Alignment Of He I, Timothy J. Gay, H. G. Berry, R. Deserio
Timothy J. Gay Publications
We have measured the alignment of beam-foil collision-excited states of He I produced by bombarding carbon foils of various (1.3-110 μg/cm2) areal densities with beams of He+ and HeH+. In addition, we have measured the total light yield of several transitions in He I, He II, and H as a function of foil thickness using beams of HeH+ ions. Experiments were done with He-foil exit energies of 125, 500, 550, and 650 keV. He I alignment decreases in all cases for the thinnest foils when molecular projectiles are used. Total light intensities generally increase …

Timothy J. Gay Publications
We have measured the beam-foil collision-induced alignment of the 3p 1P, 3p 3P, 3d 1D, and 3d 3D states of He I for He+ beam energies between 30 and 1300 keV. The alignment of all four states is found to vary with beam-current density as well as energy. The number of secondary electrons emitted per incident ion, γ, has also been measured as a function of foil temperature and beam energy between 400 and 1400 keV. The rate of change of both alignment and γ with foil temperature exhibits …

Modeling Soil Water Contents And Their Effects On Stream Flow In Kentucky, Grant W. Thomas, Ronald E. Phillips, David E. Radcliffe, Scott Shepard
Modeling Soil Water Contents And Their Effects On Stream Flow In Kentucky, Grant W. Thomas, Ronald E. Phillips, David E. Radcliffe, Scott Shepard
KWRRI Research Reports
Soil water contents of eight important soil series in Kentucky were measured periodically during the summer growing season for four years, 1977 through 1980. The soils divided into three groups according to their behavior. The first group (Maury and Crider) is well-drained and never showed excess water above field capacity at any time during the four seasons. The second group (Zanesville, Lowell, Calloway, Grenada and Shelbyville) showed perched water tables at times, especially during the early part of the growing season. The third group was represented by the Huntington soil which has a permanent water table.
The in-situ field capacity …
The Effect Of Deep Sea Bed Mining On Strategic Minerals And National Security, Gary R. Hammond
The Effect Of Deep Sea Bed Mining On Strategic Minerals And National Security, Gary R. Hammond
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Deep sea bed mining has been a topic of considerable debate since it became technically and economically viable as a mining venture in the mid 1960's. The availability of manganese nodules has been determined through costly "prospecting" operations and their existence in sufficient quantity and quality has been found to be adequate for the mining industry. Though the future of the nodule mining is undetermined, it is the purpose of this paper to determine its impact on the national management of its associated strategic minerals and national security.
Decision Analysis: A Systematic Approach To Environmental Impact Assessment, Richard E. Dodson
Decision Analysis: A Systematic Approach To Environmental Impact Assessment, Richard E. Dodson
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
The creation of the national Environmental Policy Act of 1969 was an explicit recognition by the congress for the need of a better management system to be used in environmental matters by all federal agencies. Section 102(2)(A) of the Act directs that a systematic, interdisciplinary approach be used in the planning and in the decision-making if the planned action may have an impact on the environment. While the council on Environmental Quality, which was created under the Act, has revised its regulations recently pertaining to the structure and format of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), it has yet to articulate how …
Theory Of Electronic Excitations In Slow Atomic Collisions, John B. Delos
Theory Of Electronic Excitations In Slow Atomic Collisions, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
This review deals with quantitative descriptions of electronic transitions in atom-atom and ion-atom collisions. In one type of description, the nuclear motion is treated classically or semiclassically, and a wave function for the electrons satisfies a time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Expansion of this wave function in a suitable basis leads to time-dependent coupled equations. The role played by electron-translation factors in this expansion is noted, and their effects upon transition amplitudes are discussed. In a fully quantum-mechanical framework there is a wave function describing the motion of electrons and nuclei. Expansion of this wave function in a basis which spans the …

Interferometer Studies Of Equatorial Fregion Irregularities And Drifts, E. Kudeki, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, H. M. Ierkic
Bela G. Fejer
A radar interferometer technique developed at Jicamarca, Peru and first used to study electrojet irregularities has now been used successfully to study plasma turbulence in the equatorial F region. Our first results have shown that the most ‘turbulent’ echoes appear to come from a region that extends for tens of kilometers in altitude but for only a kilometer or less in the east-west direction. This slab may very well be the wall of a depleted region, a plasma ‘bubble’. Sometimes the irregularities can be tracked as they move eastward or westward. Velocity profiles for the evening period obtained in this …

The creation of a diet is a complex process which involves analysis of a number of critical variables. Due to present technology, computers can be used effectively in menu planning and recipe analysis.
The objective of this study is the utilization of the computer to test the major criteria which must be met in order to produce a diet which meets nutritional, cost, and acceptability requirements. In this thesis, the design and implementation of a computerized menu planning system known as the Nutritional Data Base System is presented.
U-Pb Systematics And Ages Of Rocks From The Zone Of Cataclasis, Bitterroot Dome, Southwestern Montana, Edward Charles Arruda
U-Pb Systematics And Ages Of Rocks From The Zone Of Cataclasis, Bitterroot Dome, Southwestern Montana, Edward Charles Arruda
Masters Theses
The eastern flank of the Bitterroot range, western Montana, consists of a 100 km-long zone of cataclasis which dips to the east. Zircons in sheared granitic plutons from three localities within this zone were dated using U-Pb methods. These zircons, which consist of anhedral cores and euhedral overgrowths, yield concordia lower-intercept ages of 48-52 million years before the present, dates which likely represent crystallization ages of the plutons. Shearing which affected these plutons, therefore, is significantly younger than the 72-76 million year age assigned for eastward movement of the Sapphire tectonic block whose detachment zone has been interpreted as the …
Bounded Solutions For Some Gradient Type Systems, A. R. Aftabizadeh
Bounded Solutions For Some Gradient Type Systems, A. R. Aftabizadeh
Mathematics Technical Papers
C. Corduneanu in [3,TH.1] investigated the existence of a unique bounded solution of the system [see pdf for notation] (1.1) with [see pdf for notation] continuous and of class c(2) in u. In this paper we shall prove the existence of a unique bounded solution of (1.1), stated in [3,TR.1], under weaker conditions, and also we shall discuss the asymptotic behavior of bounded solution of (1.1) on a half-line. We wish to mention that M. M. Belova [1] had similar ideas, but she did consider only a special case (space L2), and without concern for existence. Before we proceed further, …

Monotone Method For Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems Arising In Transport Process, B. G. Pachpatte, V. Lakshmikantham
Mathematics Technical Papers
Recently, monotone iterative methods have been successfully employed to prove existence of multiple solutions and point-wise bounds on solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations (see, [1], [3]-[6], [9]). In the transport process [10] of n different types of particles in a finite rod of length (b-a) the equation governing the particle's density is given by the following linear system of equations [see pdf for notation] where Ai, Bi (i = 0,1,2) are n x n matrices and x,y,p,q are n-vectors. The components x1,...,xn of the vector x represent the n distinct type of …

Multi-Scan Correlation To Separate Radar Tracks From False Alarms, R. I. Greenberg, R. E. Thurber, R. J. Prengaman
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
An algorithm and computer software have been developed to filter out clutter in radar displays in order to clarify real tracks. Detections are generally declared valid when found to be part of a reasonable pattern of three or four detections in an eight scan history. The filtering process reduces the number of spurious reports by several orders of magnitude, providing significant improvement in distinguishing ships from waves and other sources of undesired radar reflections. The algorithm is being incorporated into radar system hardware in order to improve tracking of ships as signals are received. The method also shows promise for …

A Technique For The Isolation And Identification Of Aliphatic Amines In Water, Peter Alan Drew
A Technique For The Isolation And Identification Of Aliphatic Amines In Water, Peter Alan Drew
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Small, aliphatic amines added to a basic, aqueous solution (16.2 L) at a concentration of 100 parts per billion were isolated by sorption on a small column of macroreticular resin. The amines were eluted with diethyl ether; the eluate concentrated, and the compounds separated and identified by gas chromatography. The efficiency of the recovery of a-nines ranged from 5 to 28%.
A protocol for derivatizing pyrrolidine and n-pentylamine in ether with fluorinated acylating agents was developed. The method was found to be adequate for the detection of approximately 13 micrograms of &-nines in concentrated ether extract.

A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim
A Method Of Modeling Multirate Two-Dimensional Recursive Digital Filters Author, Albert P. Gerheim
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents a method of modeling two dimensional sampled data systems with two sampling rates in each dimension. This methodology is applied to the problem of synthesizing two dimensional velocity filters using one dimensional prototypes and multirate concepts.
The modeling method includes the replacement of scalar z-transforms of signals by vectors of polynomials, and the replacement of scalar z-transforms of impulse responses by matrices of polynomials.
The synthesis of velocity filters is accomplished through the use of coordinate transformations in the z-transform domain which skew the ω1 -ω2 axes on the unit bidisc. The filters synthesized using …
On Washout In Nonlinear Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld
On Washout In Nonlinear Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld
Mathematics Technical Papers
Let x(t) be a solution of a compartmental system. If, for some compartment j, x (t) -> 0 as t -> °°, then we say that compartment j washes out. We show that a compartment washes out if it always reaches (along a fixed path) either the environment or another compartment for which there is no return path. Additional criteria, particularly regarding exponential convergence, are also presented. Examples are drawn from tracer kinetics, enzyme reactions, and epidemic models.
On None Approach To Equilibrium In Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld
On None Approach To Equilibrium In Compartmental Systems, Jerome Eisenfeld
Mathematics Technical Papers
The question of convergence of a solution of a compartmental system to an equilibrium point, as t -> °°, is of considerable interest [1-6]. Although it was not explicitly stated, the remarks in [1] seem to suggest that in the case of closed systems, of the type specified below, every solution approaches an equilibrium point. These remarks prompted the construction of counter examples, to be presented below, to show that a closed compartmental system may admit periodic solutions as well as aperiodic solutions that do not approach a constant vector.
Palynological Correlation Of The Kentucky No. 12 Coal, Gerald E. Vyhmeister
Palynological Correlation Of The Kentucky No. 12 Coal, Gerald E. Vyhmeister
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In attempting to analyze the depositional environment for the Kentucky No. 12 Coal three columns were sampled from a 1 km area. The columns yielded 76 miospore species belonging to 33 genera, and representing in decreasing order of abundance, arborescent lycopods, tree ferns, calamites, small ferns, gymnospermous trees, seed ferns, herbaceous lycopods, and others from unknown origin.
The pattern of spore distribution in the columns did not appear to be affected by the presence of several partings, a feature which calls into question several mechanisms proposed for the origin of partings and also creates difficulties for an autochthonous origin for …

Growth And Recruitment Of Two Penaeids In The Bay Of St. Louis, Mississippi During 1979, Teresa C. Heaton
OES Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile brown (Penaeus aztecus, Ives) and white (Penaeus setiferus, Linnaeus) shrimp were collected from two stations of a nursery area in St. Louis Bay Mississippi, during May to October, 1979. Periods of shrimp recruitment and growth were determined to discern whether the concurrent environmental variables of salinity and temperature had an influence on shrimp abundance and yield. Growth estimates were obtained from length frequency measurements of trawl samples taken over a 24-h period per month from each station. An analysis of variance of length versus the variables of sex, month, station, time of day, salinity and …

Chemistry Of Organic N-Chloramines, Formation Of Arenesulfonamides By Derivatization Of Organic N-Chloramine With Sodium Arenesulfinate, Katherine F. Bowdring
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Organic N-chloramines are recognized by-products of chlorinated water systems. Because of their chemistry, none have been isolated or identified.
This paper discusses a method for the derivatization of the organic N-chloramines based on a nucleophillic substitution mechanism. N-Chloro derivatives of amines of various structures were studied including primary and secondary aliphatic amines, as well as amino acids. The effect of the presence of other functional groups including aromatic and unsaturated systems was investigated.
Derivatization was done by three different methods, one involving derivatization of the pure N-chloramine, and two involving derivatizations of the N-chloramine generated in situ. Seventeen arenesulfonamides have …

Characteristics Of Sediment Transport In Overwash Surges, Paul Richardson Bowen
Characteristics Of Sediment Transport In Overwash Surges, Paul Richardson Bowen
OES Theses and Dissertations
Sediment samples taken from a washover deposit were used to determine the mode of sediment transport within overwash surges. The determination of sediment transport mode is based on the concept of hydraulic equivalency of different density grains. Hydraulic equivalency may be based on settling velocities or entrainment velocities. Two individual mineral grains of different densities cannot have the same settling and entrainment velocities. If the settling velocities of each grain are similar, then the less dense grain must be physically larger to settle at the same rate as the smaller denser mineral. However, once both of these grains have made …
